The Fisherman's Sushi is a serviceable, minimalist sushi joint offering fair sushi and Japanese classics at an appropriate, budget price. After a long day on the beach at Oxnard our family stopped by on a Sunday evening for a quick dinner before driving home. The restaurant is seemingly the only survivor left in a strip mall food court, leaving, after sunset, an almost eerie feel with the restaurant taking up one corner of an otherwise empty courtyard. We ordered and our food came quite quickly. We got the Tonkotsu Ramen ($13), which was quite poor; while the proportions were generous the broth was off and the ingredients melded together a bit too much, like a stew kept on for too long. The dinner bento box with teriyaki salmon ($17) was decent though, with great tempura vegetables, excellent fried gyoza, and good, if generic, salmon and spicy tuna maki side. We also got the B.S. II roll (whatever that stands for; $14), a California roll topped with cooked scallops and shrimp and spicy mayo. We've had many variants of this before (my spouse being a cooked sushi fan) and this was fairly mid, as the foodies say these days. A special note should be said for the service; our waitress, while quite busy by the end of the evening, attended to our needs, added on drinks later, and even put on the game at my request. Value, listed above, I found to be quite favorable. The food quality was limited, yet this still made for great budget pick. My expectations weren't high for this Fisherman, but he met them. The steady stream of pickup drivers and other families who came to that empty mall are telling, however. Tucked away in an old food court just steps from the harbor sits a sushi bar that feels like a portal to another time. The wooden counter, cute decor and menu make you feel as if you've been transported straight to Japan. Fishermans sushi is a hidden gem known to those who grew up here and to those who stumbled upon it by chance (like me). The last man standing in a ghost town of what I imagine was a once bustling food court. It's a real testament that they've been able to stay open all these years. This restaurant has character that's for sure. Inside are eager chefs and friendly service, even after all these years. The prices are still insanely reasonable too. My friend and I split a sashimi boat for $45. That was six varieties of fresh fish, each with five large slices of sashimi. HOW?! In this economy?! Grateful that they can serve up fresh sushi at such reasonable prices. Their classic rolls and fried appetizers are also fantastic. My friend and I would both highly recommend their shrimp tempura. Fried up fresh, the batter was crispy and delicate. For rolls, go with the Fisherman's house roll as it was garlicky with a good sauce and fresh. We had a really good time here and definitely feel like it's a well kept secret to those who weren't born and raised here as for lunch it was pretty dead inside. I continue to come to fisherman's sushi and I haven't been disappointed yet! I mostly picked up sushi on a Friday night to take home to the family and we all love it. We have been doing this about once a month for the last few months. The lady that always runs the register recommended that we order direct by calling them and not through a food service just because they do get charged a service fee and because we support our local businesses, I have definitely been doing that. I'm embarrassed to say, I carry a menu in my car. Next on my list to try is the Matcha cheesecake but usually I'm so full from the sushi that I don't ever have room for dessert lol every time I go on Fridays to pick up, they are pretty busy whether it's inside or have other orders waiting for pick up. Great service, weird abandoned food court vibe (loved it), near the water, outdoor seating, easy parking, and tasty food. It weirdly hit a nostalgic note for me. My husband and I had dinner here on a Wednesday night. We weren't super sure we were in the right spot when we were walking up because the entrance is kind of nondescript. When we walked in it totally looks like a food court with one of the businesses closed and the sushi place is the last standing. We were greeted right away and were seated. We ordered: Spicy Edamame, Sun & Kissed Roll, Sexy Beast Roll, 12 pcs Sushi Combo and a Salmon Skin Salad. Everything tasted great! I loved the Sexy Beast Roll the most. The Salmon Skin Salad is something I plan on ordering next time I eat here again. The Spicy Edamame was spicy, but it was overcooked. Incredible spot to stop by for a quick bite of sushi to eat! Hubby and I just tried The Fisherman's Sushi and we loved the food! We had the Okinomoyaki - $11 and it was a perfect small appetizer for us; this one definitely reminded us of our trip to Japan! We also had the delicious Alaskan & Philadelphia rolls - $15/ea approx. I had their Thai tea which had a unique taste, not too sweet and perfectly balanced. I'd suggest just asking for extra ice if you prefer cold teas. My husband had a large Asahi beer which was super refreshing after our earlier walk. 10/10 would recommend. We are locals and will be back! This place has been here forever . There was a Smokin Jays across the way and it looks like a taproom is coming . I was not impressed with my roll. After a walk though I was hungry . Service was nothing special. In an outdated space . We Kayaked yesterday and stopped at fisherman's sushi for lunch. We've lived part-time nearby for nearly 10years and never eaten at F sushi before--always thought the "food court" looked a bit dirty/run-down especially to eat raw fish. Since we were last at the "food court" (now abandoned except for F sushi) to get BBQ (now closed), the whole place has been painted white and looks much more appealing. Recent Yelp reviews are great and a health score of 99/100 so we thought we would give our Kayak arms a rest and give F sushi a try. As others have mentioned, it's a friendly/family type vibe. You can eat indoors or outside. Extensive sushi+Japanese menu and several craft beers on tap--for $5! We shared the salmon/scallop roll and the Fisherman's roll. Although the salmon/scallop roll was good, the garlic sweet sauce topping on the fishermans roll is amazing. After we inhaled the roll, my wife licked the last specks of garlic sauce off of the plate. Located in a food court by the Channel Islands harbor, the food was pretty decent considering the food court set up. Normally I wouldn't order raw fish sushi unless it is in a better setting, but since the place is right by the harbor, I thought maybe they might have access to fresh seafood(or I hoped). I ordered the chirashi bowl, which was a selection of sashimi over rice. The bowl came in a beautiful presentation, with carefully sliced sashimi artfully placed alongside shredded daikons, and topped with sliced green onions, sprinkled sesame seeds. There were about 12 pieces of fish, which was generous, and the fish tasted fresh. We also ordered two bentos, one a beef shortrib with tempura, the other teriyaki salmon and tempura. The bento sets came with gyozas, salads and rice, and delicious miso soups were included. We also ordered a couple of sushi rolls which were also good. The prices were fair. There was only one other restaurant in the food court, a BBQ/hamburger place, and Fisherman's Sushi has considerably more customers, so that gave a fair idea of the popularity of the place. You can take the food to the outside patio to eat, and there you get a nice view of the harbor, and you can walk on the shoreline trails after your meal. read more

So glad we found this place I was very satisfied with the food my favorite was the dynamite Roll. The service was great they were very friendly and quick to get your food out. The only downside is the cleanliness of the place it looks like they need to clean it up more frequently and possibly update it a bit as it looks like it's falling apart. For all the sushi places I have been to, this one was towards the middle of the pack. The service, food and atmosphere combined was very nice. I ordered the salmon teriyaki meal which came with tempera shrimp veggies, 2 California rolls salad, salmon and miss soup. Unfortunately minus 1 star for drenching my salmon with an excessive amount of teriyaki sauce. That was a killer. The food itself though was very good. I enjoyed the tempura California rolls salad and the salmon without the sauce and of course the white rice. The mist soup was absolutely atrocious. It was really salty and I only took a few sips of it. Price wise, the food was around 10$ although the sushi selection and sashimi selection were not bad. I liked multiple different types, especially the caterpillar roll. They also sell sashimi, yakisoba, udon and other Japanese desserts like mochi and ice cream. Comparing this place to anaba, this place wins. Anaba doesn't come close especially when it comes to quantity. The taste of this place seafood on the beach though is pretty refreshing. It has an amazing vibe while eating in the breeze from the ocean nearby. Parking is abundant and the places are relaxing since it is located on a harbor with plenty of boats. read more

I've eaten here dozens of times, never once had a bad experience. The delicious, always fresh food combined with an unwavering consistency makes this spot a great bet. Some of the many items I love here include the spider roll, baked mussels, spicy tuna roll, eel roll also fantastic. The sashimi is excellent every time. On my birthday one year I ordered a variety of hand rolls including a salmon skin one, all delicious.. Can't go wrong with any of them. If there is a non seafood eater in your party take a look at their bento boxes, which reminds me of the veggie tempura. Light, crispy, perfect. They have cold beers if that's your thing, hot tea, sake and are located right in the Channel islands harbor. There is a reason they are always busy is because they just come through every time and with a genuine smile on their face to see you. Ain't nothing fishy about this sushi spot! Fantastic fresh fish at a price so reasonable, it feels like robbery. The lunch box special provides you with a main dish (chicken teriyaki, teriyaki salmon, etc), a roll of sushi, tempura vegetables, miso soup, salad, and dumplings - all for just under $12. Wild! Pictured are my boyfriend's favorite of the dynamite (scallops, crab, shrimp topped with an eel/mayonnaise sauce and then torched) along side a California roll with eel perched so delicately atop. My buddy and I were out of town and decided to try out some of the sashimi and sushi which was served to us warm,and it tasted awful. we both agreed that the raw fish was very distasteful /unsatisfying, and may have been spoiled. When I brought this to the attention of the waiter, I pulled him aside, spoke to him respectfully and asked for a half refund or a replacement if that was an option. Out of no where the chef began shouting profanities at me from the kitchen. I was in such disbelief when he looked me in the eyes and said "what is wrong with your head". Completely uncalled for, unprofessional, and hurtful over a small complaint about the quality of the food I was served. Despite all of this, the waiter still reimbursed me from his tip jar but I was still only refunded for half of the original purchase price. What a bummer! This was basically like getting sushi from Vons, made to order. The takoyaki was so overly heated and the skin/exterior was mushy and inedible. Very affordable and a casual seat yourself type place. The building this place is in is almost like a mall food court. When you walk in, there's like 5 other restaurants and a bunch of tables. Seating is first come first serve. There's no servers or anything like that. You go up to the register and place your order and they give you a number. Then you pick up your food when they call your number. I got the callo de acho, it was a 6 piece sushi roll with scallops, shrimp tempura, tuna, and avocado. I believe it was $11. It was really delicious! I also got at the place next to this sushi place, fried mozzarella sticks. They were ok. The cheese wasn't melted at all and it was really salty. I tried some of my fiance's fish and chips though and it came with 3 huge fried fish. It was so delicious! I would come here again and get that. I'm glad I did, freshest & nice size cuts of fish over the entire top of the roll touching plate on either side (not just little on top, like so many). Friendly service as well! Idk if I will be back unless craving in area & why I'm only giving a 3 star because it was expensive for the setting, not being a sit-down restaurant but a food court with dirty tables, where ever you sit, yet charging as if a restaurant vibe or atmosphere! Charge like $15-18 a roll, then you have taxes & then additional harbor tax... it adds up quickly (3 rolls cost $60, all said and done)! Would be nice if offered a combo deal for rolls like buy two rolls get one 1/2 off or lower prices as sure getting fish locally so not shoping cost and saving on overhead cost not being an actual restaurant but a food court with no need for dishes or washing dishes... read more

KOREAN STYLE SASHIMI We stayed at an Airbnb next door and was recommended this place for fresh sashimi (halibut, shrimp only no tuna or other fish) and korean spicy fish stew. They do the korean style, thinly sliced halibut sashimi that you wrap in lettuce and dip in spicy gochujang sauce with the raw garlic. SOOOO DELICIOUS! The halibut texture is chewy almost cartilage-y in some parts but it's amazing. The korean lady owner told me to bring my own plates and pot for the stew if I wanted more so of course I did. We had 8 adults and ordered 2 plates of the halibut sashimi (which came with the spicy fish stew), japchae noodles, 2 fish and chip plates which was waaaaay too much food. The space is open seating, or you can sit at the sushi bar. I feel like the biggest bang for my buck is getting one of their dinner please. I like the chicken teriyaki which comes with rice and they're Asian salad as well as an order of tempura, two Gyoza and four pieces of a California roll for $12-13. I'll switch it up and change the meat such as ordering salmon or their beef teriyaki. I really like their tempura as it is crispy and light, you get a of shrimp, carrot, onion, zucchini, and potato. I've been going here for a very long time almost 7yrs, solely because of my parents. This place has serious sanitation issues. THEY ARE NOT and do not care about health and safety. If you are seated inside the restaurant, you have a better view of the kitchen and it is a nightmare inside as well as cleanliness of the overall restaurant. This is a serious concern if they are serving raw fish! Service, serious issues, if you tell them something seems wrong, they will argue and not in a nice way. Seems like a family owned business but these people have no rights to run a business with these attitude. All I wanted to hear was "sorry, how can we solve this issue" instead I got, "WT* are you talking about, I know how to do my job!" Not only that, the owner/chief ran out the kitchen in anger and gave the impression don't f**** come to my restaurant ever again. Moreover, I had my cups placed top side (where you drink) directly on the table. Who knows what's on that table and even worse, they cleaned it or not! I'm not going to lie the food is great, and the pricing is more than fair, however, if you're in a servicing industry, maybe learn what servicing industry does? There is no care for the customer, always excuses over excuses, like I don't care if you're busy or not. To some extent it makes sense, but I always have to scream out for help if not, they do not care.
