    Rainbow Roll

A friend and I happened to pop into Maki Sushi on a whim during a Ventura filled day! When we chatted with the host, he explained that it was happy hour if we dined in. That was enough to bring us in for dinner. My friend and I took a look at the menu and got to ordering. I opted for the rainbow roll! After a few short minutes, our food came out quickly. I dug in right away and it was so good. Really hit the spot! My friend opted for the California roll with a side of crispy onions. She finished eating before me and asked if I wanted to partake in some of her crispy onions. I added them to the last few bites I had. It was honestly a lot yummier than I anticipated! It tasted like they make the crispy onions in-house. When we got the bill for our dinner, my friend and I were pleased at how reasonable it was! The staff was very friendly at Maki Sushi and the service was efficient. Overall, had a very good experience and would come back!

Amazing food fresh and delicious. Service was very good and quick [[HIGHLIGHT]]not too crowded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance was cute and chill[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

    Salmon carpaccio, and Ventura roll.

The food was fresh, flavorful and the sauces compliment the dishes. The food melts in your mouth and the service is good.

Good enough sushi for a tourist-type location. Left full do that's always a bonus! Will say that the miso soup was a bit heavy, maybe not mixed properly, and quite salty. The Japanese scallops were great though and so was the masago sushi. The cucumber salad looked so pretty but could taste the strong presence of sugar in the mix, which I don't prefer. It all presented well and was mostly pretty good overall. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The location is excellent though and they stay open super late![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

We had the sushi and sashimi combo along with the spicy beef sukiyaki, and everything was delicious. The owner and server were both very friendly, and the prices are reasonable.

Located in a closed off strip to cars in downtown Ventura with indoor and outdoor dining. Great food for an even greater price! Our party of 9 was seated instantly and dishes took around 15-20 minutes to get out. My A.J. roll, which was basically a California roll with eel was $9.00. Specialty rolls hovered around $17, which is still a decent price!

I had been wanting to check out this sushi restaurant located in downtown for a while and today we finally did. After spending some time walking around downtown doing some shopping I realized it was lunch time and the perfect time to go have lunch at Masa Sushi. They have a lovely patio for outdoor dining, but my family and I felt a little chilly, so we decided to eat inside. They have some simply but cute decorations. Service was nice. Our waitress sat us down and took our order, she also made some recommendations. We ordered there lunch specials and their Y2K roll which was good. I wouldn't say it's the best sushi place but it was a lot of good for their prices. I would go back for their lunch specials.

Our first time at Masa Sushi was during the holiday Wine Walk evening on Saturday, December 2nd. They sit directly adjacent to the main stage where a very loud band was playing. Dear Hubby and I were squiring around our Sweet Granddaughter (age 4) that day. She loves music and wanted to dance. Problem was, Papa was in need of a place to sit down, and there wasn't any place anywhere other than one of the restaurants. We decided to give Masa Sushi a try. Despite the challenges of the boisterous music and wine-loving crowd, we were able to sample their food and get a dash of their hospitality. I wasn't very hungry, so ended up ordering a miso soup and helping SG eat her kid's plate. It was plentiful, and she can be picky, so was only having part of what came in an assortment of flavors. DH went for the Chicken Yakisoba, which tasted as good as it looked - see photo attached. The miso soup was too salty for my preference, but everything else I tried was good. That included chicken teriyaki, side salad, and gyoza. I would like to try their sushi rolls on another visit. They feature a good-sized outdoor seating area, so we'll plan to return when it's not as hectic and enjoy a more leisurely dining experience. I give them credit for maintaining a smile and good service during what must be one of the rowdiest nights of the year.

This place has amazing lunch specials from 12-3 plus happy hour from 12-5!!! We got the delicious baked mussels from the happy hour menu and I got a sashimi lunch special and my son got the number 3. All come with miso soup and salad. The portions are huge and fresh! They also have a unique assortment of rolls that we will definitely be back for. The pleasant servers kept our green tea refilled. You can also enjoy Japanese beer and sake and watch the game on one of their big screen TVs. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They also have a beautiful patio for your furry friends.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Toro sushi, flash frozen and thawed correctly. Great texture with premium, real, wasabi. Very fatty, the waygu of Blue Fin.

1/2/26 2200 Hrs / 10 PM Ambience: 3/5 [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself hasn't changed much since the ownership change. It used to be owned under the name Masa Sushi so I dont know who took it over or if they rebranded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Its a simple and utilitarian space with the bussing and cleaning equipment near where you will be dining if you sit at the sushi bar, which I did.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall the bathroom, dining area and sidewalk was clean. (The manager or owner regularly sweeps it off)[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service: 4/5 I spoke almost exclusively to Oscar, the sushi chef, for everything. We had a great conversation covering a wide range of topics and he was prompt with getting my orders ready and made sure I was taken care. If Oscar is working, I would reccomend sitting at the bar. Food: 3/5 I ordered an oyster shooter, Toro sushi, a chirashi bowl and a beer. The oyster shooter came with 2 oysters, one in a glass and one in shell. The one in the glass was a little more bitter than I would like, with the sake overwhelming any flavor the oyster, masago or pickled carrot had. The one in the shell was more balanced with the oyster tasting healthy, floral and briney, with the oyster being well cleaned with no grit. The toro, tuna belly, sushi was the highlight of the experience. It was served with real wasabi root. Maki serves its premium sushi with real wasabi. If you've never had real wasabi, it changes the flavor and experience of sushi completely. The tuna was melt in your mouth fatty, with the closest comparison to everyday food being a high grade filet mignon. The fish was never frozen and had its original texture with high notes of meaty flavor. The chirashi bowl was average and relatively unremarkable. But with the fresh wasabi, it made it very remarkable. Overall: Very good experience. The fact they care enough to use fresh wasabi for their food shows they care about the customers experience. That in and of itself would make me come back. My only complaint was the pricing, $77 pre tax, which should be expected in downtown Ventura, but it leaves me only recommending Maki sushi as an indulgence rather than a regular visit. But if you appreciate real wasabi, give it a shot. You wouldn't regret it.

So so. Didn't impress. Omakase was simply old standards, cold rice, and the sake seemed a tad off.

We sat down near the entrance to get some of the breeze from outside. The decor of the restaurant is nice, with lots of Thai-inspired decor. Now let's get to the good stuff! The food here is amazing. I ordered a hot pot soup that was simply perfect. The amount of spice was just enough, and I love hot pots because they keep my soup hot. My husband ordered a beef rice bowl and added shrimp to it. The rice bowl was also so delicious. To go along with my meal, I ordered Thai boba tea, and I loved it! The portions are generous, so we had leftovers, which we were happy about! I definitely want to go back to try some of their shaved ice; it looks amazing. I can't wait to go back to try other items on their menu.

It seemed to take a while till someone brought us water and another little while till our orders were finally taken. We requested two Thai iced teas which were quite delicious with coconut milk subbed for the cows milk. We told the server we would be sharing our orders. We shared a vegan hot pot and a Pad See Ew with chicken. The hot pot consisted of broccoli, shredded cabbage, carrots, steamed tofu, corn, udon noodles, two vegan dumplings, sliced squash, spinach and baby bok choy. Veggies were tender crisp although the broth was rather bland. The Pad See Ew was a bit disappointing. While the sauce was tasty, the broccoli and carrots tender crisp, the chicken was not only dry but quite tough and chewy. I must add, as were sharing these dishes, the server neglected to bring additional plates and a serving ladle for the soup. So my hubby had to go inside find someone and request the serving utensils for both dishes, plates and eating utensils for sharing. So we waited again. Not sure what folks ate that gave a five star review . What we experienced fell a couple notches below that rating. Would I return? Probably not, there are better options in Ventura.

Interior is…read morekept up well, it has a very cool vibe and what you would expect for a Japanese restaurant. There are multiple Teppan stations on one side of the restaurant and the other side is set up for sushi dining. We arrived 15 minutes before they opened and started seating. We were seated very promptly at 4:30 by a very friendly hostess. We were surprised to see the restaurant at least in the Tappan area full by 5 o'clock. That's always a good sign. You want to eat at a busy restaurant. The Teppanyaki menu has you choose your proteins, steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, lobster, fish. Then It starts with soup, we ordered both the onion and the miso to try both. Our consensus was the miso was better. The miso must be traditional as that is what we have always been served at other Teppanese restaurants. Next is a little green salad with the house dressing. I swear the miso soup and the house salad seem to be the same in every Teppanese restaurant. Then the show begins. We all chose the upgrade to fried rice then the grilled vegetables each entre comes with three grilled shrimp. It's an appetizer. Always keep in mind with Teppanese they grill and put these things on your plate one at a time. Do not wait for everything to be cooked before starting or the rice and the vegetables are going to be cold by the time you get your protein. They brought the birthday girl a nice chocolate sundae with a candle and took a picture that they delivered to us. All in all a fantastic evening. Thank you to all the staff at O-sabi

The ambiance is nice, and the customer service has always been friendly. We went on Valentine's Day, so it was understandably busy. The hostess seemed a bit stressed and quoted us a 1-1.5 hour wait encouraging us it's pretty late, but we were seated in about 20 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. The reason do 3 stars is that our soup bowls had dried food on the outside, which was a bit off-putting. Cleanliness is important, and that detail took away from the experience. Overall, we would still come back and give it another try.
