The lighting inside is too bright and the outside -at first thinking the warm fairy lights surrounding the patio would be nice, though after a time all that shifting and blinking of the lights becomes quite overwhelming. Good enough sushi for a tourist-type location. Left full do that's always a bonus! Will say that the miso soup was a bit heavy, maybe not mixed properly, and quite salty. The Japanese scallops were great though and so was the masago sushi. The cucumber salad looked so pretty but could taste the strong presence of sugar in the mix, which I don't prefer. It used to be owned under the name Masa Sushi so I dont know who took it over or if they rebranded. Its a simple and utilitarian space with the bussing and cleaning equipment near where you will be dining if you sit at the sushi bar, which I did. Overall the bathroom, dining area and sidewalk was clean. (The manager or owner regularly sweeps it off) Service: 4/5 I spoke almost exclusively to Oscar, the sushi chef, for everything. We had a great conversation covering a wide range of topics and he was prompt with getting my orders ready and made sure I was taken care. If Oscar is working, I would reccomend sitting at the bar. Food: 3/5 I ordered an oyster shooter, Toro sushi, a chirashi bowl and a beer. The oyster shooter came with 2 oysters, one in a glass and one in shell. The one in the glass was a little more bitter than I would like, with the sake overwhelming any flavor the oyster, masago or pickled carrot had. The one in the shell was more balanced with the oyster tasting healthy, floral and briney, with the oyster being well cleaned with no grit. The toro, tuna belly, sushi was the highlight of the experience. It was served with real wasabi root. Maki serves its premium sushi with real wasabi. If you've never had real wasabi, it changes the flavor and experience of sushi completely. The tuna was melt in your mouth fatty, with the closest comparison to everyday food being a high grade filet mignon. The fish was never frozen and had its original texture with high notes of meaty flavor. The chirashi bowl was average and relatively unremarkable. But with the fresh wasabi, it made it very remarkable. Overall: Very good experience. The fact they care enough to use fresh wasabi for their food shows they care about the customers experience. That in and of itself would make me come back. My only complaint was the pricing, $77 pre tax, which should be expected in downtown Ventura, but it leaves me only recommending Maki sushi as an indulgence rather than a regular visit. But if you appreciate real wasabi, give it a shot. You wouldn't regret it. read more

After spending some time walking around downtown doing some shopping I realized it was lunch time and the perfect time to go have lunch at Masa Sushi. They have a lovely patio for outdoor dining, but my family and I felt a little chilly, so we decided to eat inside. They have some simply but cute decorations. Service was nice. Our waitress sat us down and took our order, she also made some recommendations. We ordered there lunch specials and their Y2K roll which was good. Our first time at Masa Sushi was during the holiday Wine Walk evening on Saturday, December 2nd. They sit directly adjacent to the main stage where a very loud band was playing. Dear Hubby and I were squiring around our Sweet Granddaughter (age 4) that day. She loves music and wanted to dance. Problem was, Papa was in need of a place to sit down, and there wasn't any place anywhere other than one of the restaurants. We decided to give Masa Sushi a try. Despite the challenges of the boisterous music and wine-loving crowd, we were able to sample their food and get a dash of their hospitality. I wasn't very hungry, so ended up ordering a miso soup and helping SG eat her kid's plate. It was plentiful, and she can be picky, so was only having part of what came in an assortment of flavors. DH went for the Chicken Yakisoba, which tasted as good as it looked - see photo attached. The miso soup was too salty for my preference, but everything else I tried was good. That included chicken teriyaki, side salad, and gyoza. I would like to try their sushi rolls on another visit. They feature a good-sized outdoor seating area, so we'll plan to return when it's not as hectic and enjoy a more leisurely dining experience. I give them credit for maintaining a smile and good service during what must be one of the rowdiest nights of the year. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Service was great and they have very convenient hours being they're open later than anywhere else on the weekends. Sadly, the sushi rolls we got were below average. My boyfriend and I don't have extremely high standards for sushi at all and have been to many mid shelf places, yet this one almost felt too hard to eat. Not fresh at all, all of the tuna rolls had a ground up tuna that was fishy and left a gross aftertaste. I'm glad there's outdoor dining! Fresh air outside and the music provided (maybe by the city?) was a great ambience. The food gave us a great experience too as it was great. I ordered Shishito peppers and they were delicious. I'm hoping Maki can make the serving size bigger. I don't care for the Bonito flakes on top, please add more peppers. The rolls we ordered were also good, but it was a small one. Sliced up, I got six. That's pretty small. I think a great experience means leaving the restaurant so full your belly hurts. I went here with pretty high expectations from the reviews I've read. Service was okay, got help right away. My only problem was, we ordered edamame and we never received it so we cancelled it. We got the crunch roll, tuna roll and got the Sushi & Sashimi Special. From that we also received miso soup that came with the special which was actually pretty good. With the sashimi special I was so disappointed. For one I'm pretty sure it was FAKE tuna. I know how tuna tastes like and that's not how tuna is supposed to taste. The tuna is artificial in color and when I tried it, it tastes so mushy. Don't let the beautiful setup fool you. The fish were dry even to the salmon. AND especially the salmon. The proportions and rice to fish ratio were big: May look appetizing and appealing but it's not. Save your money and go somewhere better. Based on other reviews who have had a negative experience, the common factor is the service. I came to eat here and the service was the most unprofessional I have ever experienced. We came to eat last Friday and initially we were being served by a friendly waitress who asked if we needed more time or had any questions. We ordered their fried poppers with her and for our main order another waitress came to take that order. She appeared very rushed and we did not understand why initially. She then said that we would not be able to place any more orders as it was last call. We had no issue with and at this point there were about 40 min left until their said closing time (9:30pm). Our food came out one by one and when the last plate was set down, the waitress brought out our check and insisted we pay now as they were closing registers at that moment. We thought okay sure but not 30 seconds later she came back and said she needed a payment now so my husband placed his card. Keep in mind the restaurant was closing their registers at least 30 min before their stated closing time. I had never been to a restaurant where they start closing registers before the restaurant even closes unless they are accustomed to closing this way before so once the last customer leaves so do they. This means doing all the cleaning as customers are there and not staying afterwards. Which it seemed this way because they were also taking out overfilled trash cans through the restaurant while customers were still eating their food. I saw them take out overfilled trash cans 4 times coming and going which to me is unprofessional and a health hazard. They even left one of the trash cans next to customer's tables when it was brought from their kitchen and not initially there. After this the same woman came to collect everyone's receipts and we planned to leave cash as a tip. So we wrote cash as we were still trying to eat because every time we would reach for a bite it was interrupted due to payment being demanded. The lady stood there and saw we wrote cash so she demanded we give her the cash at that moment. I thought it was highly unprofessional and I then decided to say we were not going to leave a tip because her service was rushing us every minute. We gave our initial waitress a cash tip as we thought she was friendly and liked her service. The other woman then said I will come back for my tip so you think about it. She also said if we were not going to tip then we should not go out to eat and stay home. She also stated that in California it is required to leave a tip. No where in the receipt did it mention that and we also did not have a large party where tip is already included due to a large party. I did not say anything because it seemed that no matter what I was going to say or do she was going to have the contrary opinion. We have never decided against leaving tips until this day. I also say this due to having family in the restaurant business I understand what professional and respectful service is. The menu had a lot of great options. The whole table loved the cucumber salad!! The garlic edamame was really delicious, cooked and seasoned just right. The fried gyoza was pretty good, though I'm bummed they don't offer them steamed. The whole table shared the beef teriyaki and chicken teriyaki rolls and we all thought it was low quality and not the best tasting, on top of MASSIVE rolls that were impossible to eat in one bite (making it extremely sloppy). I even whispered to the server as to not cause a scene, no apology, said he would take it off, walked away, and tried to charge us for our meal, WHICH WAS ALL TEMPURA... i simply did not have the appetite anymore and had to go back and forth with the server to remove all of the items because that was unacceptable. I cannot make sense out of the five star reviews for this place. It's mediocre sushi, at best. When we expressed concern that the teriyaki chicken looked under cooked, one server asked if we requested "well done", then looked at her co-worker who asked the same question. This isn't a cut of steak. Anyone in the food service industry should know about the importance of properly cooked poultry. Felt like we were being gas lit. Didn't work. When I saw the menu I wanted to run, but was with others, I figured the omakase would be safe, at least we would get the freshest. Albacore made me gag and they actually put a SPICY TUNA ROLL in an omakase meal. I was not expecting something super high end for the price but I was expecting something edible. My daughter got a roll with scallops and hers actually looked quite good.
