Stopped into Geno's Place hoping for a solid neighborhood spot, but it fell short this time. The place has potential -- a nice local crowd and a decent setup -- but the service was pretty slow, and it didn't seem very organized. The food was okay at best. The bartender was friendly enough but clearly overwhelmed, and there didn't seem to be enough staff for how busy it was. I wanted to like it -- the atmosphere has that classic South Side bar feel -- but the experience just didn't deliver. Maybe it was an off night, but based on this visit, it's hard to recommend without some improvements in service and consistency. I celebrated my birthday here on Friday, 8/15, and it was a terrible experience. My family rented five tables on the patio, and guests came in from Indiana and Detroit to celebrate with me. Unfortunately, the night was ruined by poor service and unprofessional management. Staff didn't even acknowledge it was my birthday and tried to charge me and some of my guests at the door, even though they arrived before 10. The music was disappointing -- they catered only to one crowd and ignored all of my requests. I was originally told I could have my own DJ with insurance, but management later changed their word and said no. Inside was extremely hot, we had to beg just to get water, and our food didn't arrive until almost 10pm. I didn't even get to eat my cake there because I was so upset at how poorly my party was handled. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was told none were present and that "I should have picked somewhere else." With more than 20 people in our group, we ended up leaving early to continue the celebration elsewhere. This was supposed to be a special night, but the lack of professionalism and customer service ruined it. I will never return and do not recommend this lounge to anyone. read more

Whoever is the daytime cook on 8/25/2023 at 12:30 pm needs to come on out that kitchen! I couldn't believe how salty and over seasoned the grilled shrimp and fried chicken was. If you get a Carry Out HOPE your meal is decent. I got the turkey wing and dressing and I am so disappointed. When I opened the container I didn't know that DRY OVER COOKED IN THE MICROWAVE STUFF was the mac n cheese. I absolutely could not eat it. The greens tasted like vinegar. The food has consistently been good and the drinks are pretty standard for a bar/restaurant- there good but you will probably be drinking several to get buzzed if at your favorite hole in the wall you just need 1 good 1. The music is nice but on the days and times I've gone it seems to be an after thought but that's not a bad thing as most people seem to go there eat, drink, and be merry. I have yet to go here for drinks, so my score is based solely on food. If you like good, solid soul food, this is a decent spot. The quality of food is really high and delicious. I usually get the chicken, but the catfish is really good too. I also love the flat pancake cornbread. Good food HORRIBLE service at the bar. The older bartender helping me was more interested in engaging her regulars than helping me. Had to ask for a menu twice (15min between requests), asked for water twice (never got it), and had to flag her down for the bill (she wanted to take my payment before giving me my total). The younger woman who took my food order was awesome. She checked in, asked if I had questions, and brought my food & bill out promptly. I've been here several times through the years, and Geno's is holding its own. I first discovered this spot when I had to attend several, varied live music performances for a class. I lucked up on an awesome jazz saxophonist the first time, and an equally enjoyable blues vocalist on my second visit. Upon learning that they also served very tasty bar food, as well as soul food dinners, I was hooked! Staff is pleasant, pours aren't stingy, and live music on Mondays and Wednesdays. It was just okay. There was entirely too much pepper in the Mac and cheese. The green beans were pretty good. They did pack the food well. But the big let down was the grilled tilapia it was in fact not grilled it was blackened. And had no taste at all. Funny since I paid an extra dollar for it to be grilled.
