This has always been one of my favorite places and I love the food. Sadly last night was an utter disappointment. Started with friend green tomatoes which have always been amazing, but they were hard as a rock, knife barely cut through. Had to return them, our server acted completely annoyed and didn't apologize or anything. We exchanged for fried oysters instead, they were good. Basically the server we had seemed like she was angry at us from start to finish. Never have had poor service here, they always seem to have very mature and pleasant servers. This young lady was terrible, she was rude and dismissive. I really hope this place can train there servers better because it would be a shame if another athens restaurant goes down hill just on account of the servers. They were not busy last night either. Been in the area for about two years - just tried George's Low Country Table for the first time. We had no idea what to expect - came in and saw white tablecloths and knew it was a bit more upscale than what we anticipated- but don't worry. The place is casual and comfortable. I went here recently with my husband for a date night. The place is nice and has enough ambiance to be both romantic and charming. Service was pretty attentive and the place filled up for dinner. The food was 3.5-4 stars. The menu was "fancified" southern cuisine. Something commonly done in Athens, but very hard to execute (the best rendition done by 5&10). George's does a solid job, but it's not "uh-mazing". Unfortunately, Southern food does not have the versatility of, say, Italian food, which can go from filling, family-style (lasagna) to luxurious and gourmet (truffles/porcini). Nevertheless, this place produces a satisfying and enjoyable dinner. What did we have? The little cheese biscuits with room-temp butter that took the edge off before the meal. Crab cakes that were very good, and the scallops were rich and filling. I tried fried crawfish for the first time and enjoyed the distinct flavor. La Marca prosecco was more dry than sweet and wonderfully crisp. Chocolate cake had a unique, mousse-like twist. Cheers! read more

Went to have Sunday brunch and the food was fantastic. The crab cake Benedict was superb and served with home made potato chips and fresh fruit. My husband had the low country boil. It was large and very tasty. The service was great, very reasonable prices and we left very happy. Today (Monday) I realized I left my credit card. First time I ever ate here. Pretty reasonably priced, as many restaurants in Athens are. First started off with some smoked salmon deviled egg and they were pretty good; just enough salmon flavor, not overpowering. Had the seafood jambalya and it was a perfect balance of flaky fish , shrimp, chicken, andoui sausage, and stewed tomatoes. Portuguese white wine was excellent accompaniment to the meal. My Jambalaya was very bland, my wife's steak was overcooked yet not hot, and even our daughter- an expert in chicken fingers- didn't like them here. My wife and I visited here after the game to celebrate our anniversary. We love cajun cuisine and based on good reviews thought we would give "George's" a try. Sadly, we were very disappointed. First, the garlic Parmesan biscuits were chewy and left me wondering how many days they had been on the table. We ordered the Shrimp Fritters which were doughy and had very little flavor of any sort. The salad was nothing more than chopped lettuce with some tomatoes and cucumbers - while it seemed fresh there was no real style or pizazz in its presentation. My wife ordered the gumbo for an appetizer which was actually surprisingly good. When our entrees arrived so did more disappointment. My wife ordered the Fried Shrimp. The shrimp were overcooked and rubbery with little taste, the potato chips bland (come on, season them at least with Emeril's spices) and the corn relish looked very unappetizing. My order of Jambalaya was equally disappointing. The redfish was actually leathery and the small amounts of accompanying seafood were equally poorly treated. When I think of cajun food, I think of food that dances just not with passion but with joy. Unfortunately, there was neither in this meal. Both the cooking and the presentation were lackluster at best. I am not sure where the reviewers ate that gave this restaurant such high ratings but it certainly wasn't here. This is certainly not an "upscale" restaurant and left me feeling robbed for such an expensive meal. The one good note of the meal was the service. There is nothing special about their Tuesday Raw Oyster Special. Love oysters, heard that on Tuesdays they have oysters 2 doz. for $12. We ordered 4 doz. and if you put them in a measuring cup, you would be lucky to have a cupful. Very disappointing. I would be embarrassed to serve oysters that small. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Athens. I have been multiple times and all of my visits have been great. They serve cheddar biscuits before the meal, and most meals come with a salad (I highly recommend the garlic salad dressing!) Every meal I have had has been really good. The steak is my favorite! It comes with an onion ring on top! Their shrimp and grits is some of the best I have ever had, the sherry crab bisque is awesome, the braised boneless short ribs are also really good and so is the fried shrimp. I have also tried the eggplant pirogue but it wasn't a favorite. The waitresses are always very pleasant. Last time I went for my birthday, and they gave me a free dessert, which I really appreciated. Overall, I highly recommend because they are one of the best restaurants in town. Their location is easy to get to and the restaurant is big so there usually isn't a long wait. read more

I have been looking for a place that serves a good eggs benedict. I finally found it here. I was very impressed with the ambiance and the friendliness of the staff. The place can get very busy though so come early. Additionally, it would be nice if there were more parking places because the one's designated fill up quick. read more

While the food was good and came out in a timely manner... The service was very poor. We had a large party of 12 and I understand that can sometimes cause a delay but it took over 30 minutes to get our checks after the table had been cleared. Not only that but the water jars on our table were constantly empty. Probably better for a small group or couple. read more

This restaurant looked promising when walking in. The menu had lots of fancy meal options - I ordered the prime rib that came with mashed potatoes and broccoli casserole and a salad. The menu seems a bit overpriced but the portions are generous. We had good (almost overly-solicitous) service. The table bread was a yummy cheddar drop biscuit. I ordered a wedge salad and was disappointed to have it served as a chopped salad, though the flavors were fine, especially the homemade bleu cheese dressing. We got a well-executed smoked pulled pork over the cheddar biscuits as an appetizer and I LOVED the super-vinegary sauce. My entree was quail breast over polenta. The quail was lovely, the sauce delicious, and the mushrooms perfectly cooked, but the polenta was (I'm almost sure) completely unsalted, which made the whole dish seem bland. My husband had short ribs and they were just fine. Not our favorite restaurant in Athens and I was expecting a bit more complexity of flavor for the price point, but it's a nice atmosphere and within an easy walk from our house, so we'll go back and try some other items. read more

We went late- around 8:30 or so.. We got seated right away, everyone was friendly. We got the menus, they are pretty limited- we ended up getting the fried chicken with gravy, mashed potatoes and greens as the main. I got the gumbo ($7) as an appetizer and it was one of the best ones I have ever had. My wife ordered a nice mixed cocktail the "hot brown" that was little, but really good and over priced ($6) and I got a Hopsecutioner ($4.50). The dinners came with a salad, which was a serious disappointment, I finished the salad in 5 bites, and it tasted like it had been sitting in a fridge all day. The main was $16 per which I also thought was over priced for the amount and the quality that we received. The main dish was just okay, it was a pretty typical fried chicken, and it was laid on really bland mashed potatoes. The collard greens were great. The cheddar biscuits were good too! Overall giving it 3 stars because the prices of everything, the food was okay but wasn't worth $60 for two people.. read more

Just had dinner at George's Lowcountry! The only stairs are wonderful - we recommend trying the roasted they were delicious. Raw on the half shell is always wonderful. The oysters were a good size in on Tuesday are seven dollars a dozen. read more

We visit George's at least every few months or so. The food and service has never disappointed. It's a unique cuisine that doesn't really compare to anywhere else in town. Dinner favorites are the eggplant pirogue and shrimp and tortellini carbonara. Also, brunch is great--we always enjoy the cocktails and can't resist the lowcountry eggs benedict in particular. Personally speaking following our 2nd time here after relocating from Florida, we have found this to be THE best restaurant in all of Athens. To begin, a very friendly staff greeted us when we arrived. The restaurant presents a comfortable atmosphere with an option for nice outdoor seating, which the four of us elected on an early and warm Saturday evening. With a superb variety of menu items, each of us chose a different meal, which we all found to be quite moderately priced: black grouper; crab cakes; fried pork chop with a bacon jelly-like topping; braised boneless short ribs. Everyone's meal was wonderfully prepared and absolutely delicious. Our server, "Al," was beyond exceptional, truly adding to our overall excellent experience. For anyone out there who has yet to eat here, you owe it to yourself to try it. You will be very glad you did. read more

This place is a gem in Athens. The pork on the drop biscuit has the vinegar barbecue sauce with a nice kick - an excellent appetizer that works well as an entry. The shrimp and grits are served as a grit cake with a delicious white gravy. I love the crawfish etouffee. The atmosphere and service is terrific. Clean, attentive, friendly, and good food at a good price. If it's overpriced for some I would wonder if that has to do with expecting budget student rates for every restaurant in our college town. Had Sunday brunch there recently...wow! Service was exceptional, the food was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. We started with the soup and it was delicious. Hearty chunks of bread and cheese made their flavorful onion soup a treat. I enjoyed the Eggs Benedict which was served on their fantastic cheese biscuits and included a perfect poached egg and fried green tomato. It came with a side of fried potatoes which were more than plentiful. I couldn't even finish. They kept the ice water and cheese biscuits coming and their $3 Bloody Marys were spicy and delish. We had a wonderful dinner at George's Lowcountry Table last night. I ordered the crabcakes, and my husband ordered the barbequed salmon. Both were wonderful. The salads that came with both entrees were fresh and the dressing was homemade, not something from a bottle. Happy hour specials on wine. The biscuits were light and not too greasy, just the way we like them. Service was outstanding. Seating on the patio was very nice; but we did request a table out of the sun. I have been to George's several times mostly for brunch. After the last time I went I said I wouldn't go back. My previous experience was sub par only due to our servers lack of knowledge. I was told my drink only cost $5 so over the course of the meal I ordered three. After the first drink my server let me know that they were actually $6. That's fine I can deal with $6. Once I received my bill the drinks were actually $8. This may seem insignificant but an extra $9 is more than the price(or supposed price) of one cocktail. This could have been fixed by simply adjusting the bill but all I received was an apology and no adjustment. The crawfish étouffée was mediocre at best. I returned again with an open mind. Only to see that my server was the same one I had last time. I gave him another chance. Upon being sat he seemed like he was going to be very prompt. That was not the case. Almost every time I needed something I had to flag him down. A few of times it was as if he couldn't even see me waving at him. The food was again pretty mediocre. I had the pork and grits and she had the green eggs and ham. The vinegar sauce on the pork made it taste almost like kimchi. I eventually just closed my tab and went straight to the bar for my drinks. Again the bartender didn't know the price for a mimosa. Moral of this story: it's ok to ask don't just tell the patron what you "think" something may cost. read more

Very pleasant experience. We ate here for a Sunday morning brunch. I had the omelette of the day; squash, zucchini, onions. A perfect light blend with mixed fruit on the side. I additionally ordered the pimento cheese grits; amazing flavor! My daughter is a really picky eater and barely ever eats a full meal. She cleared her plate; French toast casserole was perfect as well, not too sweet with a side of strawberry rum sauce. My wife has an omelette with cured ham; a tad salty but still very flavorful. Great dining experience. Would definitely return and recommend to anyone! read more
