February 2015 ACC Swim & Dive Championship, 200 yard breaststroke with names on the board.
    Tanis L.

Oh what could have been had I chosen to attend Georgia Tech for a Ph.D. in Geophysics... I came to the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center in February of 2015 as part of a graduate school visit (all expenses paid) once I had been accepted to a Ph.D. program in Geophysics. I chose to attend a different university for my studies, but am reflecting on my experience at a different school especially in the context of staying physically healthy in graduate school and decided to write this review. The Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center was not the biggest athletic facility I visited on my graduate school visits, but it was the one with the most homey feel. That is to say it was a bargain deal even if you wanted to partake in classes or offerings that costed money and the design was one I felt comfortable enough in to want to work out here. At the university I ended up attending, I not once used the athletic facilities on campus to work out partly because they lacked a homey feel. Which brings me back to Georgia Tech and this center and how I would have used it had I chosen to attend Georgia Tech for graduate school. The pool was a site of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, which I didn't learn until we visited it in person. This was a pleasant blindside surprise. To boot, when we stopped by the pool the race going on was a 200 yard breaststroke race (my stroke in swimming is breaststroke) which got me all energized. It was my first time visiting a site from a Summer Olympic Games which just so coincidentally also happen to be the first Summer Olympic Games I was alive for. So cool! In addition to a stand out pool, the indoor track was a beauty. I love indoor tracks in buildings with windows, it is fun to watch the weather change as one runs. The track also looked over basketball courts, another fun thing to observe if walking or running on the track and able to see the courts. All around the facility was amazing and had I chosen to attend Georgia Tech for graduate school I would have made frequent and good use of this facility. The only grumbling I heard from current students on my graduate school visit about the facility was how frequently the pool was occupied by swimming and diving championship events and how that hindered students of the school from getting to use the pool themselves.

The U.S. Junior Nationals East swim meet just wrapped up at the Mcualey Aquatic Center. The athletes are the fastest 18&U swimmers in the country. The pool is the 1996 Olympic pool. I had the unique opportunity of being both a USA Official and Dad as my son competed in his first Juniors competition. It was a proud moment for me to serve as a volunteer and Father. The facility is a student recreation center for Georgia Tech students and faculty. The pool is frequently utilized for USA club swim meets. The recreation center located up front on the lower level is vast and also includes a rock climbing wall. The equipment is newer. The building also includes classrooms. The history of the pool when completed in 1995 for the 96 Olympics looks different today. Although the 50 meter pool, diving platforms and well remain unchanged major modifications were later made to suit the university. This includes the expansion of the facility, roof and walls. The original venue was open air to view downtown Atlanta and allow temporary bleachers. Enhancements such as scoreboards were installed. The original concrete spectator area remains intact. During U.S. Junior Nationals the pool temps were correct and air temps comfortable. Recently a new HVAC system was installed, however air quality issues still persist. Chlorine odor was present and my eyes stung somewhat. Then staff pumped in fresh air and moved fans to improve. I'm unaware of any additional work that will be done on the air quality front. Furthermore with the pool having much of the original 20+ year equipment failing a plan for replacement is planned. This will include demo of the deck to replace wiring that is rotten. The current operation has all wiring above the deck. Once complete the future for swim meet operation will be bright. The history of the pool makes the Mcauley Aquatic Center a special place to compete. Once necessary repairs are made to the deck it will continue to offer a premiere venue for elite swiming competition.

The diving area. Diving practice is especially fun to watch. If you look closely you can see the exercise room.

We have not used all of the amenities of this facility but have been several times for swim meets. We have always found the venue clean, organized, and efficient. Service personnel are attentive and professional. The exercise area has a clear view through to the diving area and this place even has a recreational pool with a water slide. We have tried the smoothie bar and loved it. It's very popular during peak hours. Be advised that if you are visiting, nearby parking will cost you $10-$15 for an event.

Forget losing weight, have fun instead. Georgia Tech has got something good for you at the CRC (Campus Recreation Center). This amazing recreational and athletic facility has everything you could ever want to use/do to work your body into shape. If you are in anyway connected to Georgia Tech (student, alumni, faculty, staff, spouse of a faculty or staff) you can join as a member. So aside from a 3 story tall water slide, indoor rock climbing wall, hot tubs, a sauna, indoor running track, racquet ball courts, and the 1996 Olympic pool, they have cardio equipment with personal televisions with over 100 stations in all different languages (elliptical and Oprah at 4) and numerous sets of weight lifting equipment. You never have to wait in line for anything unless it's New Years resolution season. You can check out sports equipment and shoot some hoops or join in on a yoga class or hip hop dance lesson. You can also rent personal lockers to keep your stinky gym shoes in (yuck!). The staff does a great job keeping the facility clean and the equipment working. As a student there, I prefer to swim laps in the recreational pool and find the fellow swimmers friendly and supportive. And nothing is better than sitting in the hot tub or sauna on a Friday afternoon after a hard weeks work.

    Brittany T.

The CRC is hands down the nicest gym I have ever been in. It's very sizable, got plenty of equipment, a rock wall, an indoor track, an Olympic swimming pool, and that's just the start. It's easy to take for granted such an incredible facility, especially as a student. Its wide range of hours makes it easier to accommodate a workout in a busy schedule, which is especially nice when you're a busy student of the Institute.

The new facility is sparkling and definitely worth visiting if you haven't seen it yet and becoming a member if you swim work out regularly. We paid about $250 for the family to join for the year and the bonus is that it gives the whole family access to all Atlanta public pools. The building is very open, bright (lots of natural light come in through the glass), and beautifully built. While ATL isn't the Northeast, winter is still somewhat more of a period of hibernation for a lot of people and the opening of this center provides a very nice public option for continuing to be active. It seems like they offer a wide variety of classes and activities for kids. While I can't speak to the basketball gym, workout facilities, and indoor running track on the second floor, the pool is great. It's helped our toddler develop an appreciation for the water and we haven't even tried their infant swim program yet. Some highlights of the pool are that the water is very warm, they have a beach front walk-in, a separate family changing room, a variety of aquatic toys for kids to enjoy, and a few fun sprinkler type poles in the pool. For parents looking to entertain their kids this could be a great drop-in option too at just $5 a visit I believe. My only complaints are 1) We've waited months to get our membership cards and the machine that prints them is always down or unavailable for some reason. This is obviously not such a big deal but 2) As this "undiscovered" gem is no longer so undiscovered, we've seen more and more swimmers come to the pool and it can be difficult to find a free lane to swim in now (especially around peak hours weeknights after work). This may just be what happens as you become a victim of your own success. The pool is huge but it's unfortunate that the way they built it the lanes cannot be expanded or added easily because the free swim section has a giant physical barrier from the lanes part.

The Beltline has lots of personality and flair. You will find locks of love, placed on a chain link fence on a overpass. The entire 22-mile stretch of the Beltline is forecasted to be completed in 2030. I cannot wait to see what they got planned. You can spend a lot of time on the Beltline, walking, biking, or scooting. There are lots of restaurants and bars to check out along the way too. Parking is easy to find, with enough space for at least 75 cars, including spots near what looks like a boat ramp. It costs $8 for the whole day, which isn't bad if you plan to stay a while. Fishing seems to be the main attraction here. There were plenty of folks (kids and adults alike) either in boats or lined up along the shore, casting their fishing lines off the bank. The trails are mostly easy to moderate, but there are a few steep, narrow spots where you'll need to watch your footing. I walked about 3.5 miles with a hiking group, following a loop that winds through the trees and offers a mix of open views and shaded paths. There are some benches along the way if you need a break. Bathrooms are available, which is always a plus, and there's a lot of green space. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend spreading out a blanket for a picnic as the ground is littered with dog poop, despite the big "no dogs" sign at the entrance. It's about an hour's drive from Atlanta, with the last few miles on Buford Dam Highway being steep and winding. These natural parklands are a good place for walking, running, biking, kayaking and fly fishing! Ambiance is a natural park in the edge of a bustling city flanked by urban infrastructures...not manicured, full of bushes, trees, streams and the river with huge concrete overpasses. It's a good location to visit nature ITP. Here's the DL. About 1/3 of the paved trails and 3/4 of the unpaved trails are canopied with rolling elevation (~900 feet). Here, you could stroll a peaceful couple of miles and trail run moderate 5 - 8 miles. The paved trails are well marked and easy to navigate. But, the undeveloped trails are NOT with limited signs /blazes. Most unpaved trails are in the forest and have limited views of the river. Some parts are ridden with roots, loose rocks and boulders so wear proper shoes. When you do go on undeveloped trails, please "leave NO trace". There's a small ruin in the middle of the parklands but is unmarked, very steep with heavy over-growth. Biking is allowed ONLY on paved trails. Fly-fishing, I see when the water level is lower with slower currents. Encounters with trail blocking gumps occur here on weekends. Sunday strollers with NO self-awareness, blocking both sides, leisurewear selfie posers blocking trails and some parking themselves in the middle of an unpaved trail... :-/ Dogs on leash. There is No Maid service here to picks up your duty bag(s). There's a trash bin specifically for pets at the parking lot so pack out your 4 legged kids' mess paw-leash! Self-service...there are a few picnic tables, benches, animal proof trash bins, bathrooms, water fountains at the trail head and a boat ramp adjacent to the parking lot (off Cobb PKY / 41) for boats and kayaks. Next to the bathrooms there's a leveled grass area for Frisbees or other group games. Occasionally, I've seen CCP riding bicycles or electric motorcycles here as 2PDs are nearby. Parking is $3/day or $35/year and has about 60+ spots. Drive slowly...it's not the smoothest lot. Pay at the trailhead next to the boat ramp and the bathrooms. Be sure to display the perforated paper on your dash as rangers regularly check and ticket. These 4 nature areas are great if you are looking to workout with elevation changes in varying terrains...wood, boulders, concrete, mud, loose rocks, dirt...with views of the forest, streams and river at a nearby location. Enjoy!

I called ahead specifically to ask about swimming, and at no point was I told the pool would be unavailable. When I arrived, the pool was completely taken over by a swim class, making lap swimming impossible. That kind of poor communication is unacceptable and shows a lack of basic consideration for patrons' time. The weight room was just as bad. Multiple benches had visible sweat stains, making it obvious the equipment had not been wiped down after previous use. In a fitness facility, basic cleanliness isn't optional, it's the bare minimum. The bathrooms were absolutely filthy. Not "a little messy," but dirty enough to make you question how often they're cleaned at all. Between the unsanitary conditions and the disorganization, the entire facility felt neglected. I was hoping to find a dependable gym for future business trips, but this was a one and done visit for me. If you care about cleanliness, clear communication, or a professional environment, I'd strongly recommend looking elsewhere. This facility needs serious improvements before it should be charging people to use it.
