Sadly was dissatisfied with Gerhard's cafe. Started with the traditional German salad. It was vinegary and good but I felt like it was something I could have easily made at home. For the price, my serving of meat was small in the elk dish. The meat was dry and overwhelmed by the salty sauce on it. The cabbage was too sweet for my preference and the spetzel was dry and bland. My partner got the farmers plate and enjoyed it but thought it overpriced for the money. He enjoyed trying the unique beers. I can only rate this place on my experience and I was not a fan. After several recommendations, we finally made it to Gerhard's. We are so grateful for the recommendations! Had a lovely time getting to know the bartender and locals. Started with some fine German/Austrian brews. Started our dinner with She Crab soup. Finished with sherry. Perfectly prepared, seasoned, and laced with chunky crab. I then had the Elk Entree. I'm typically hesitant to order heavy, rustic food but the bartender sold me on it after describing the preparation. It was awesome! Perfectly cooked, scratch made cooking. I felt like I was at someone's house at thanksgiving. Really, really well done. This place has become my favorite place to eat at on an annual hunting trip to the area. It is located in a strip-mall/storefront building, but don't be deceived - once you step inside you feel as if you've stepped back in time and are somewhere in Germany. The floor, walls, and ceiling are covered with what seem to be authentic relics from another time and place. This can be a very busy place and is most definitely not the place for an intimate meal - it can be very loud/bar-like during peak hours, but for me it just adds to the feel of the place. The only odd thing I would say about the place is their seating policy. You basically are left to fend for yourself and are told to have a seat anywhere you'd like. It sounds like a simple task, but during peak hours it can be a task. At times I have felt like a gladiator in a dual for a table. The food is amazing. You can get many traditional German items and they have a nice selection of wild game to choose from as well. We went out to dinner to celebrate my husbands birthday. This is our 2nd time dining at Gerhards. We had the artichoke dip with their homemade chips. It was so excellent. We highly recommend that. We both had the Weiner Snitzel topped with a cranberry sauce and orange slices which taste so very good. Their house salad is always our favorite with tastes of potatoes, cucumber and vinegar type dressing and for dessert Creme Butler that was awesome after a heavier meal. If you haven't been to this restaurant then you are missing out. It's recommended that you make reservations. You can dine either in the casual side of the restaurant or the more formal side. We are here with our friends for prom and there were 14 of us. we had reservations at 6:45 and waited until 8:00 to get our food. while tables that had bigger parties, getting there 15-20 minutes after us and they still received their food prior to us getting ours. We also ordered the peppercorn sirloin and they gave it to someone else and expected us to take the filet mignon that we didn't order. then proceeded to charge for the filet mignon that we didn't order. then it took 20 minutes to get our receipts. our prom started at 8:00 and we left the restaurant at 9:00. so therefore we are late to prom by an hour and 45 minutes. the service was absolutely terrible. we had such high expectations for Gerhard's noting that we come here a good bit and never have a bad experience... but tonight was absolutely unacceptable. will not be back for a good while. get your service and staff together. read more

I have lived in Spartanburg for 40 years, and somehow I have missed out on this little gem of a restaurant until now!! Now I try to go at least once a week. There are always daily specials, so it's impossible to eat the same thing twice unless that's a personal choice. I haven't eaten a bad meal here once. If I did, Management is so nice, they would have no problem exchanging it. The service is always consistent and the alcoholic drinks are worth purchasing, not too pricey or weak as most restaurants around can be. It is locally owned, which is reason enough to try here. It was the latter. Service was quick and friendly. The food... spectacular! We started with the deep fried bacon wrapped shrimp and Escargot. Amazing. We also got a basket of bread with cheese dip that can only be described as mana from heaven. Side salads weren't anything to write home about. I did wish they could've added some extra fixings (croutons, tomatoes etc...). However the meal itself made amends, quickly. We had lamb chops and mashed potatoes with goat cheese. Yes!!! My wife had the smoked pork butt bbq pizza. It was a personal pan size and could've fed the both of us for one meal. It was so good though! Great flavor. It was another wonderful meal at Gerhards last night. The decor, service, and overall feel of this place has always been exceptional. I went with the Elk Rouladen again and once again it was absolutely divine. The cook has always taken the time to prepare the food in the most impressive way possible. This means super fresh red cabbage, super delicious Spätzle, and absolutely perfectly prepared Rouladen. Sadly this is likely going to be my last visit to Gerhards as I'm no longer going to have an account in this area. You can bet I'd be back if I ever had the chance. Service was very friendly and atmosphere was very traditional considering they were celebrating Oktoberfest. I ordered takeout from the bar after a long day, hoping this would be a highlight for my wife and I. I ordered a margarita pizza, which, i can really only compare to a Frozen Pizza from the supermarket topped with a slice of tomato, a slice of Fresh mozzarella, and basil leaf on each slice, barely any sauce at all. I also ordered the coconut shrimp, which was on par for what I expected for a piece of fried food from an Irish pub, but without the traditional Panko breadcrumbs that coconut shrimp usually comes based in, we didn't exactly get the experience we were looking for on this usually delicious appetizer. Wasn't bad, but also had no wow factor whatsoever. What turned me off the most was the Pan Seared Tuna Sashimi dish. I come from the coast where tuna is served fresh. I've been eating tuna my whole life. When I opened the Styrofoam bin that the dinner came in, my sensory's were overwhelmed with the smell of foul fish. I took a bite to see if my nose was just off but it wasn't. It was fishiest bite of tuna, I have ever tried in my life. I couldn't even swallow it. I took it even one step further and threw it on my skillet to pan, sear it a little bit more, hoping that maybe that would help. Boy was I wrong. Instead it filled my entire kitchen with the scent of the rotten fish and the fish turned dark gray rather than the usual peachy white that tuna usually turns when searing. All I could do at this point, since I was so grossed out, was throw the whole meal away. Such a shame because I've heard such great things about Gerhard's and my wife and I were so excited to try it finally. I don't believe we will be returning, sadly. read more

This spot is awesome! Came with one of my brother's and was super impressed. The pork chop w/field greens is easily the best I've ever eaten. The wait staff is was on point as well. Meagan and Erin made sure we were taken care of thoroughly and made us feel extremely welcome. The beer and whiskey selection at the bar was also pretty impressive and worth mention. This is place was all I hoped it would be and way more. First off, walking in I felt like I was transported directly to an Austrian bar. Paintings on the wall and ceilings along with the decorations all were produced by the owner and his Austrian relatives. The drink menu is tastefully mastered with Austrian and German beers along with domestic offerings. But, why would you order a Bud Light?? I didn't see their cocktail offerings, but from what I saw around us at the bar, they have a full line up. They don't start serving food until about 5:30ish but open at 4:00 with full bar offerings. The bartender was extremely knowledgeable about all the food and really had a well-informed way of explaining the menu options. If your staff love and know they food well, it is going to make me want to order! We ordered the she-crab soup and it was delightful. Swirl of sherry on top was the kicker and it is loaded with crab, like not just hidden at the bottom, but every spoon full had a bite. My husband ordered the elk dish with spaetzel and there hunter sauce with red cabbage and it was out of this world. I had slight envy for his dish, but thankfully he was nice and let me share. I am not a fan of cabbage, but the magic they put in....dang! The dish looks overwhelming and heavy, but surprisingly it wasn't. It just all comes together perfectly well. Heard from several people that Gerhard's was the place to check out for dinner. The initial problem with Gerhard's is that the menu has several great sounding dishes on there and a short business trip is not enough time to sample all the great things listed there. I ended up having the New Zealand Venison with Red Cabbage along with the house salad. The house salad was a mixture of several vegetable side dishes. The white cabbage, cucumbers, and tomato-onion mixture was great. Nice crisp vinegar flavor without overly acidic bites. The onions were sweet and paired well with the tomato making a nice counter-melody to the white cabbage and vinegar potatoes. The venison was lean and braised to increased the tenderness increase flavor. Sauce was thick and hearty with a warm, rich, velvety texture. This was some of the best venison I have eaten. There were no chunks of gristle or chewy portions. Desert was a nice coconut pie. Crust was flaky with a dense filing of coconut and served with some fresh whipped cream. While dense the coconut filling was not overly sweet or cloying as some pies tend to be. Instead the coconut flavor was clean with a hint of a nutty roasted quality. Overall great meal, friendly staff, and many interesting items on the menu. If in the area it is a must to eat at Gerhard's. read more

Visiting Spartanburg on a Friday night. We have been to several of the local spots and we were looking to try something new. After looking at some of the other reviews, we decided to try Gerhard's Cafe. It was easy to find, is close to Wofford College and was bustling! It was very nice to see how busy this restaurant was... always a good sign! We decided to dine on the casual side and so we sat ourselves. It was a while before a waitress came over, but considering how busy they were, that wasn't surprising. The waitress was friendly and although we had a little bit of a wait between ordering our beverages and placing our order, the service was good. We decided to try the fried pickles and the spinach and artichoke dip (recommended by Alanna, our server). Both were good. For entrees, we ordered a pepperoni pizza, the beef stroganoff and the pan seared chicken. Of these, we all agreed that we liked the pan seared chicken the best. All in all, it was a nice, hearty meal with good food. We did appreciate that Alanna told us a little about the owner (Gerhard) and how particular he is about his vendors and his meats... that is surely a good sign and one of the reasons Gerhard's will continue to be on our list for when we visit Spartanburg. read more

My husband and I loved this place! The formal dining room looks like it's from the 1700's which may not be for everyone, but I think it's pretty cool and different from other restaurants. They have a good variety of German and Austrian beers. I had an awesome Austrian grapefruit soda beer. Delicious, but low alcohol content. We had the beer battered calamari which was great, and our entrees were wiener schnitzel and roasted duckling. All tasted great and cooked perfectly. The service wasn't perfect, but the waitress was very sweet. We will definitely be coming back. If you're going on a Friday or Saturday night, I suggest you make a reservation. The service was decent, but our waiter was a bit of an odd bird who mumbled most of what he was saying so it was a little hard to understand him at times. But he kept our drinks full so I don't really have any complaints there. They have an extensive menu and the food is delicious! I had the Gerhard's greek salad, which is an interesting take on Greek salad that I've never seen before, but it was surprisingly good! For my entree I ordered the filet with peppercorn sauce and fried potatoes and oh my gosh- it was so, so, so good! The peppercorn sauce is crazy delicious and the steak was tender and seasoned perfectly. And hey, you can't go wrong with fried potatoes.
