I recently visited Gershon Backus Vintners for the first time based on a recommendation from a friend. Unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing, primarily due to an incident involving one of the owners. The female owner engaged in an unprofessional, slightly aggressive, and loud confrontation with customers at a nearby table, which created a very uncomfortable atmosphere. Her behavior was not only rude but also highly inappropriate for a setting where customer service should be a priority. It made many of us sitting nearby feel very unsettled and speechless at what we were witnessing. The owner got up from a table she was sitting at with some friends drinking as well so I am not sure if this added to the unprofessional behavior, but I can honestly say as a business owner myself never I have seen an owner conduct themselves in the manner that she did. I do not take writing this review lightly, as I am also well aware of how important reviews are for your business and how damaging they can be, but this detailed experience from above is exactly what my 1st experience was. My group had been considering becoming members, but after witnessing this incident and tasting the wine, we decided against it. As avid wine enthusiasts and members of several local wineries, we found the quality of the wine at Gershon to be below our expectations. Given this entire experience, I cannot recommend Gershon Winery to others. read more

Thank you for responding Christina. What's encouraging is that you took quite a bit of time in responding, so it shows you care. Indeed, as you point out it was a below average trip for us since I did take the time to rate several poor experiences - but do know we did visit other wineries and in fact joined a new one during that trip (I'm poor at reviewing every place we go). In hindsight I admit I was somewhat harsh since you were the last visit, but I will stick with my rating though. As for the Mourvèdre, I realize it is one of the more acidic reds but was unprepared for just how acidic what was served to us. It was over the top. Regarding value, if you compare yourself against what other wineries in the region are asking, then indeed yes, you're in line. Since you took the time to read my other posts, you'll see my take is that Temecula overall is getting way overpriced. Value? If I wanted to spend $50 on a bottle of wine - what would I find on the top two shelves at Vons...that's what I use as a gauge when I think of "value." On the tour guide thing - I was referring to guided tours where the guide is there with the group - the one I referred to in my original post (I'm glad you avoid the big limos and busses). As for the décor and ambiance, in our opinion, it does not look rustic/old or anything like a villa with heritage - it is, frankly, ratty looking. The little blue-tooth boom-box someone used for music was also telling, particularly when whosever phone was being used moved away and it cut out. As I said, you care - which is paramount. My insignificant two cents are; invest (heavily) in the space and the guest experience, and only serve wines that will be a "hit" for most. Good luck to you. read more

Let me start by saying this place is a quiet gem. The atmosphere alone is so pleasant and they have the cutest dogs that wonder around and make there presence known. On our first visit we became members not only was the wine delicious Stephanie waited on me made sure our glasses were filled with a new wine to taste. She was amazing and of course I know its her job but she sat with me chatted about anything and just made my day fun. After a few more visits she's always made me feel welcomed. Stephanie is awesome... The whole experience has been excellent our last visit was with Wendy and of course just as pleasant. Not only is the wine good but you could see all the people that come in are a familiar face because all of the servers seem to know everyone who walks in and to me that is awesome to see knowing your always taken care of along with amazing service. We spent our Superbowl there enjoying wine and they even provided free appetizers for whoever was there. If your looking for a quiet place I will recommend everyday and twice in the weekend. I liked the wine, but beware the wine club or "clique" as they refer to it. It took American Express to put a hold on their charge to get them to stop billing me for wine never received or picked up. In October of 2020 I emailed Gershon Bachus and cancelled my membership. nine months later I get a bill on my cc for $150.00 When I emailed Gershon Bachus and let them know this was cancelled Christina L. emailed me back and this is that first email excange: Me: On 7/22/21, 6:45 AM, To whom it may concern I was charged $150.00 for the wine club membership and sent an email months ago asking to be removed from this membership In October last year I moved out of the area and have not received any wine since last July Please issue the appropriate credit ASAP SEE attached Christina : On Jul 22, 2021, at 5:43 PM, christina@gershonbachus.com wrote: Daniel, We do not have any cancellation email in our database. Talk about a hidden gem in Temecula, this has the best wine I've ever had. I'm not much of a wine aficionado but every single glass was amazing and delicious. The gentleman, Howard , was passionate and very knowledgeable about the wine. If you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor and stop in! They are Dog friendly which was a plus. read more

We stopped by on a whim, it looked like the place would have great views - we were right! Absolutely beautiful scenery all around. Howard was our server and he was very knowledgable about the wines and a fantastic host. The wines were excellent, they specialize in reds so keep that in mind if you prefer whites. My wife likes whites but we found all of the reds to be wonderful, a nice variety and impressive quality. We joined their Wine "Clique" on the spot! This was the last winery we visited during our tour of Temecula. The winery has wonderful feel and good wines. The tasting room arranged like a Hacienda with views to compliment wines. Wines are not to my taste but they are good wines nonetheless. read more

This is a covid superspreader winery if I've ever seen one. There is a big sign that says "masks are optional" which translates "you're in MAGA country". No one wore a mask. Employees, patrons, no one. If this is what you're into great. But if you do believe we are in a pandemic and want to stay safe use caution coming here. Other than the possibility of contracting a deadly virus, the wine is decent. Our hostess even said about wearing masks: "we don't do that shit here!" This winery seems to be out of touch with reality. They should be part of the solution to ease this pandemic and hard times, but instead it's this behavior that is why everything is still closed. read more

The views are great from this winery! They're handling the pandemic by serving folks at their own table, rather than all together in a long table, as they had the last time I was here. Wished the person serving was wearing a face covering. There was a sign saying no political talk. That was a bit off putting as we wanted to toast the new president elect, which we did! We just felt we had to do it on the sly. They served us at the table and the wines were good! They give you a list and a marker and the person serving us was knowledgeable. I think it was one of the owners. There was another dog who greeted us in the parking lot by barking at us, who actually was not that friendly. I remembered the two cute dachshunds from the last time I was here, and my phone found these photos. The red wines they mostly produce were complex and tasty. The GSM ( Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre blend) was the best! read more

Came in the past sat...yep, one day before Valentine's Day. This place in quaint. Perfect easy parking. If you like good wine and a classy place for joining a wine club this is a good local. We bought a bottle of wine, flippn amazkng. Tables are spaced out and there are really cool pups roaming around. Nice to see an animal lover that owns a winery. There was this amazing lady. Wendy. She made us feel very welcome. When you come make sure to ask for her area. She rad and knows her stuff. Bathrooms are clean and open. Also there is an art thing set up. Good stuff. So far, the day had been a bust. But when we saw the gates unlocked and the sign inviting us in, the heavens opened up and the angels sang. Well... maybe not that dramatic, but at least the day definitely took a turn for the better. First of all, they are only open on weekends, and that is IF they feel like it. You see, the owners are real people who have real jobs. They just happen to have a passion for wine, saw an opportunity, and took it. But sometimes, like the best of us, they need to re-group. Thus, the spotty hours. So, when we arrived on a bright, sunny Saturday afternoon, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. There were crowds at the other wineries, but not here. Too bad. Everyone else doesn't know what they missed by not coming here. But great for us. No bar. Only table seating, with table cloths, each set with a wine glass and a menu, surrounded by pretty decor. I felt almost like we were the first ones to arrive at a big party. A few more stragglers came in, making for more fun. All in all, a nice group of folks, friendly, witty, and interesting to talk to. And some awesome wines. The best of the bunch? Mr. B bought a 2005 Reserve cabernet sauvignon - for $75. I mention the price because, he admires but usually sticks with buying lesser priced wines. This one really impressed. Missed the boutique-y gift shop items, none to peruse, but the conversation more than made up for it. Beautiful view, elegant location. Very nice wedding/special occasion spot. FYI - The Big Red Fest (on the De Portola Trail of Temecula's wine country) is coming up, April 22, 2012, 10am-5pm. Truly a great find in the area and nothing like some of the other more well known vineyards in the area. My dog and I were immediately welcomed by the owner out front. He introduced me to his three dogs, and invited me inside to sample some wine. They set a table for me out back, with a beautiful view of the vines. A complementary dog biscuit was waiting, and a bowl of water for my dog. The tasting menu was straight forward and on the table with prices. My server was Wendy, very knowledgeable and personable. She described each wine as she poured. She later told me about her dogs. The whole experience was great, I recommend this place to anyone looking to taste some Temecula wines. read more

The wines started out strong but finished weaker if you or someone who likes a full body red. The lighter reds are crisp and have an earthy tone which are refreshing. Unfortunately, our visit was unpleasant due to an older gentleman who we believe to be the owner. His dogs were barking at each new person coming in, and one of them actually tried to bite my partner. Instead of apologizing for this interaction, the owner of the dog made a joke about my partner. Keeping his fingers. We are dog people, but we understand this is inappropriate behavior in a public setting. To make our visit even more unpleasant when the owner decided to discuss the difficulties surrounding Juneteenth. I realize that visiting wine country is a person of color always means that these types of conversations are possible, but when it's from someone who owns the winery or at least associated with working with it, it is very disappointing. Because of this, we decided to leave early. However, the person who was helping us in guiding us through the wine tasting was delightful. They should probably work for another winery where their talents and energy would be celebrated. read more

This is our favorite winery in Temecula, to date! Fortunately, we happened to visit on a day they were open; they're only open on weekends. Not only is the winery a beautiful building at the end of the narrow, uphill road, but the location offers pretty views. I love the open, airy tasting area -- especially being SEATED at the 1st table, closest to the entrance. They strive to make the tasting experience a personal one, in that one person gives your group their undivided attention and service; they say that they'll even turn away people if it gets too busy. Being offered a cup of water and cracker sticks is a nice touch. Not only is the service amazing, the wines are delightful, too! We wondered into this winery after leaving another establishment that seemed to be very unorganized and I am so glad we did! We met the lovely Day Z Dukes and she hung out with us during our visit. She is the wineries rescue dog. The views there are lovely and Jeff gave us a very enjoyable and informative wine tasting. They do not offer any sweet wines there which was welcome news for our party. They were all reds except for one of the wines which also made us happy. This was our favorite winery in Temecula. I love Gershon Bachus Vinters. On a previous wine tour a few months ago, they were closed, so we were excited it was open the day we came. It also came highly recommended by our tour guide and another gal working at another winery we went too. This is a unique experience since they do seated wine tastings. You sit in an open air building and enjoy the wines and rate them on a large laminated sheet as you go. The gentleman doing our tastings (I can't remember his name, but he was from New York), was hilarious!!!! The wine makers, owner, and pups made appearances and chatted with guests as well. If you make a visit to Temecula, I would make this a definitive stop! read more

This is a most unique winery. The tasting "room" is a sort of indoor/somewhat-outdoor area. There are tables all stretched in a line, with chairs. So the server sits across from you. It is odd; but it works. And it's a nice change from having to stand at wine bars for every tasting at the other wineries. Also, this means you have a designated spot, and nobody is crowding in on you; as well, your server knows you're there, and where you're at in your tasting. The menu is set up nicely, with good descriptions. The servers are also very knowledgeable about the wines, which is paramount in my opinion. The wines are a bit hit or miss. More hit, than miss. And they are unlike most wines you'd expect in Temecula. The names of the wines are tough to navigate, since they're named after Greek gods(?). So you have to read the bottle further to know which kind of wine it is. Whimsical, kitschy, fun. But also a little tricky when I'm trying to remember a wine. My favs are the merlot (Eurus) & cab franc (Erato). The wine club is confusing, because it's unlike the other Tmec wine clubs. There isn't a "shipment", rather you just pick which wines you want. But I think you get charged a set amount every few months. It's hard to know if it's worth my while. I'm sure that can be cleared up easily if I just ask them. But it's fair to say it's different from the norm. read more

Went there this past weekend. We wanted to try a new winery since we tend to frequent the same wineries each time we are in town. Wish I could offer a review of their wine...can't. Wish I could offer a review of their service...can't....because we received NO SERVICE AT ALL! We walked in, were greeted and told to find a table outside...which we did. That was where the hospitality stopped. We sat at our table for nearly 15 minutes and were past by multiple times by multiple staff members with not even an acknowledgement we were there...no "I'll be with you guys in a moment"...nothing...just straight ignored. I had my wedding here literally four days ago and the second my family left, the gifts were opened and things generally slowed down, the first thing I'm doing is writing a review for my venue. First of all, if you're reading this and you are a bride... I feel you. I know where you're at. Choosing a venue is daunting and overwhelming and that's just one step in the process. (Pause for a moment, breath). However, if you want a gorgeous venue at a very reasonable price with an/owner who knows the ins & outs of the venue who is also your day of coordinator thrown in at no extra charge- this is the place for you! Prior to choosing this venue, I did my homework. I knew I wanted to get married in Temecula wine country. I e-mailed 20+ wineries and I read all the reviews. So many reviews from other venues seemed to nickel and dime couples. Many venues also had multiple weddings on the same day but at GBV they make it a point to close the venue completely on the day of the wedding just for you and pricing is pretty straightforward. The owners of the venue- Kenny & Christina are genuine beautiful people who will give you and your guests a personalized experience that you won't receive anywhere else. Christina acts as your day of coordinator but she does more than just day of. She literally makes it easy for you. She gives you a list of vendors- who all turned out to be SPECTACULAR and very reasonably priced. She gives you her personal cell and responds quickly to e-mails (even while on vacation in Europe!) Professionally, I'm a speech-language pathologist and am used to constant deadlines and working under pressure. Christina made the process of getting married so seamless that I'm unsure whether I just have an extremely high threshold for stress or if Christina just made getting married easier than an average day at work. LOL My wedding was a dream and so many people told me it was the best wedding they'd ever been to. I will say in terms of full disclosure, I know this venue is not for everyone. If you are extremely neurotic, don't listen to advice, think you know everything and want a venue that won't guide you in the right direction- this isn't the place for you. However, if you want someone to help and you're open to the advice of someone who has coordinated hundreds of weddings at their venue who will give you a personalized touch- then this is absolutely the place for you. For example, my husband and I thought we wanted to do pictures before the ceremony so we could fully enjoy cocktail hour. However, both Christina and the photographers indicated that the lighting was best in July after the ceremony and that it would also be cooler making for better photos. There were a few instances like this, small things that we actually welcomed because honestly we don't know what we're doing. We've never been married before. In the end, it paid off- NOTHING went wrong. Everything was wonderful and it was not an easy straightforward wedding by any means- destination wedding for most guests, mental illness in my family, budget constrictions, etc. I had fully come to terms with something going wrong and was at peace with that but it was all a dream. Our wedding was PERFECTION! I look forward to a lifetime of memories visiting GBV and reminiscing with my husband about the best day of our lives. read more

If you are looking for the Tuscany feel without the hassle of traveling overseas for your wedding, then Gershon Bachus is the perfect place to do it. The staff is wonderful and makes you feel part of the family instantly. They are super hands on and keep everything simple for your wedding planning to help with your stress levels. Our wedding ran flawlessly, and everything went according to plan. Basically, we couldn't have asked for a better day, and are so grateful we chose GBV. This venue is unbelievable because of the owners and staff. AND THE WINE....SO....GOOD. My wife and I are delighted with GBV and it will always have a place in our hearts. A-ok! Large, beautiful warehouse-like tasting room with personable service. Tastings are $18 PP and are accompanied with packaged bread sticks and a cup of water. If you want to be treated like royalty, a valued customer and like you're part of the family then visit this winery. We brought our dogs because the winery indicates they are dog friendly. Not only are they people friendly but they are dog friendly as well. The owner Kenny brought our dogs water and gave them treats while my husband was wine tasting. We didn't even ask for him to do that. Our server Kai was wonderful and super outgoing! She carried on a great conversation with us while telling my husband about the wines. She was also nice to our dogs. I would highly recommend that you check this wonderful place out, the great owners and their precious dachshunds who will give you a warm greeting upon your arrival. I would give this winery more than 5 stars if Yelp allowed for a higher rating! read more

1st time here & their wines are pretty good but probably won't be back cuz no one wears a mask & they don't enforce it. Recommended by our personal assistant, fell below expectations. The winery is set up on a hilltop, nice view over the hills but we did not enjoy the 6 wines offered on the tasting for $20. Our server was interesting, maybe his dry, sarcastic humor didn't come off as intended or maybe his lack of knowledge about the winery itself. There's a certain romance connected to winetasting and the story behind the inspiration. I asked what's the story behind Gershon Bachus, we didn't really get a straight answer except Gershon Bachus was the last names of the owners grandfathers from the Ukraine. Huh? I'm quite sure Bacchus was the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility unless Bachus with 1 "c" is a last name but no Ukrainian origins. This place is ANTI-Mask! I came here with a few friends and it took me a bit to realize that no one was wearing masks! The place was packed. None of the staff was masking and they gave me a hard time when I put the mask on when they came to the table. It was the weirdest thing! The place is beautiful and the wine was pretty good. We enjoyed a pleasant visit to Gershon Bachus during the week.  Not at all crowded. We  enjoyed the view from the outside patio, the wines, the grissini, Howard's explanations, and especially our lengthy conversation with Kenny.  We are saving our bottle of Gershon Bachus "Hesperus" Grenache to accompany a special meal to take advantage of this tasty wine.  All the wines we tasted were very good - a step above any other Temecula wines we've tried. This place is not worth your time the wines are okay at best they brought out the first bottle the wine was warm and then the second bottle was bad like really bad the sever had to take it back right away. The sever she was nice but really a big waste of time. Don't go trust me. If you don't like dogs the owners have them running around and other people bring there's not pleasant nor clean. read more
