I had a wonderful meal at Gershwin's. The ambiance is what I imagine a piano bar from the 1940s would be like; dark, with a grandiose bar featuring rows and rows of liquor stacked to the ceiling (I heard it's the best selection in Norfolk), and live piano music adding to the scene. The service was impeccable, with the lovely Marcella serving as mixologist. I had an excellent Old Fashion with Basil Hayden at Marcella's recommendation - it was not too sweet, just the way I like it. The food was excellent. I had the Caesar salad, and, as one who makes my own Caesar dressing, I could tell this was homemade with fresh anchovies. I also had the gumbo and it was amazing as well. Taking advantage of the Norfolk Restaurant Week, my wife and I tried Gershwin's. A speakeasy- styled restaurant with a gorgeous old long bar reaching to the ceiling filled with various alcoholic spirits. The ambience is right out of the '40s with a piano player in the front. If you intend to hold a conversation, recommend asking for a table in the back as the piano can be loud due to the small space. Our waitress was very attentive, but also very busy doing bartending when not taking care of us. All the staff are wired, so the kitchen can communicate when the entrees are ready. The deal was $45 each for a three-course meal. My wife ordered the creamy crab bisque, the fried shrimp, and the main course petite filet and shrimp. Her crab bisque was nice and creamy - definite winner. Her shrimp in both courses were perfectly cooked as was the petite filet. The beef was so tender, she didn't need the knife. She thought the asparagus was overcooked, however. Otherwise, a wonderful combo entrée. I had the rustic lamb stew, Cavatappi Au Gratin (Mac & Cheese), and the glazed beef short ribs with mashed potatoes and candied carrots, thinly sliced. The lamb stew was in a beefy broth. So beefy, I couldn't tell the difference between the lamb and normal beef stew. Pass on this selection. The Cavatappi Au Gratin (Mac & Cheese) was very gooey cheesy deliciousness. Unfortunately, Gershwin's had advised the crab mac & cheese as the second course. So, a disappointment there. The glazed beef short ribs were so tender, no need for a knife, lying on a bed of awesome chunky mashed potatoes with very interesting seasoning and the thinly sliced candied carrots on the side that were scrumptiously sweet. This entrée is also a winner. Now the reason for the three stars. One, you are automatically charged an 18% gratuity on your bill whether you liked the service or not. So do not overtip. Save the tip for the piano player. Second, this is European-style dining, meaning slow. We were at our table nearly two hours before the entrees arrived. If you need to be at an event after dinner, skip Gershwin's. But if you like European-style dining and like your cocktails, Gershwin's is definitely for you. As noted in most reviews, the ambiance is on point. Drinks on point, as well as the timely service of them. It did take a longer than normal time to get our food, plan accordingly. I went with a party of seven with four of us ordering the meatless meatloaf - two of us felt it was too salty, one person said it was too peppery (which another person tasted and confirmed), and one person greatly enjoyed it. I also had the N/A Strawberry Basil Lemonade, which was delicious!The consensus of the group was this is a great spot primarily for drinks. They have a long bar for drinking and seating ground level in front of the pianist and upstairs. I've been looking forward to eating here for a couple of years and we finally made it. I was hoping for a New York type experience and was bitterly disappointed. I made a reservation for 6:30. We, four of us, walked in, told the host my name and he said " your table is over there" and pointed. In an upscale restaurant like they advertise, I would expect to be seated. It didn't happen. The waitress came promptly, but the music was so loud, we couldn't hear anything she said. We finally ordered drinks. My espresso martini was really bad and I had to send it back. First, I have to applaud a business that opens their arms to large parties for celebrations as I know those tables can often be complicated and use a lot of resources. So walking into gershwin's I felt like I was stepping back in time. The entire restaurant is modeled after the twenties and 30s when decadence was at its height. When you first walk in to the host stand to right there is a piano where a live piano player plays later in the evening. The tables are scattered a little in the front and then pass the bar in the back they're beautiful chandeliers hanging everywhere you look. The room screams decadence. All of the servers are dressed in. Clothing from fedoras and suspenders on the gentleman to Flapper dresses on the ladies. William our server immediately came over to the table and introduced himself and poured us some water while we were deciding what we wanted. He was delightful when I asked for advice on what drink I might want to order and even on the entrees. I ended up going with the Georgia Peach which for me being that I don't drink often was a little too strong but still good. Her our appetizers both me and my dad got French onion soup which is a favorite of mine and did not disappoint. For our entrees my dad got the gumbo which he said had the perfect amount of heat without being too spicy for him. I ended up going with the chicken mushroom gnocchi which was absolutely fabulous. I would easily rate this within my top 10 dishes I've ever eaten. The seasoning was spot on if it had been salted more it would have been too salty it hit that sweet spot with perfection and the earthiness from the mushrooms gave the dish so much depth I would happily eat this again and again. For dessert we chose the creme brulee and it was good. The best part was honestly the table side display where he came out and flambeed it at the table. It was my first time here! I was blown away by the interior, what a gorgeous place. I was greeted, seated, and served by Mike S. I personally know Mike, but apparently not well enough to know that he works here. Anyway, I have never seen that man without a smile, so pleasant, charming, funny, and friendly. But what really left me feeling like a victim was when I ordered what I thought was a $14 Manhattan based on the written menu.. OH No!!. The server asked what whiskey I wanted and forced me to select something before being willing to proceed. Not knowing anything I asked what options there were and he listed 3 after saying there were 134+ different whiskeys. He listed a few, wasn't willing to proceed without me selecting something, and I picked something I'd heard of. WOW. When I got the bill. WOW. I picked Buffalo Trace because I had recently been to KY and I know the entire bottle cost $75. He added $10 to the original menu price. So my $14 drink was almost $30 and I didn't know until the final bill came. Never again. He was deceptive. He should have said, I plan to deceive you into spending +150+% .. are you ok to proceed? We came here for the live music and to try the Grand Illumination, their signature cocktail. It is Makers Mark smoked over cherrywood. They torch an orange peel to extract the oils & then rub it around the rim for a wonderful scent and to open the palette. I've had other smoked whiskey and bourbon drinks but this method and the length of time the wood chips are allowed to smoke enhances the flavor immensely. It is a delightful drink that I highly recommend. I also ordered the Penicillin to ward off any chance of getting sick due to the variable weather. The bartenders were nice and attentive. I can't recall the male bartender's name who made my drink. He made my drink and the guy sitting next to us at the bar. We both agreed it was an experience and would order it again. We didn't order any food as we'd eaten before we arrived and didn't even look at the menu. We got there around 7:30 p.m. and there was a pianist playing classics. The vibes of this place are everything!! It very glamorous, and they even have live music select nights. Prefect place for a date, or just to have some drinks at the bar with your friends. After having some misfortune with other neighboring restaurants due to not meeting the dress code requirements, we came here and were glad theirs wasn't as rigid. I ordered the duck breast with wine berry reduction, which came with mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts. I also ordered the scallops. I did request that the blue cheese be omitted but the scallops did come with blue cheese. First I will say that the food was very good. The scallops were amazing, except for the blue cheese that I felt did not go well with them. Presentation was also lovely. Also, the duck breast in the wine berry reduction was exquisite. So, why the 3-star rating. Well, when we were waiting for our bill, there was a computer glitch and we ended up waiting for a while. My friend, who works in the restaurant industry and is more astute to service etiquette, noted that they did not offer anything during the inconvenience, and that it would have been proper if they said here is some coffee on the house while you wait, or we'll take half off your dessert. While they were apologetic, I do recall us having to wait at least roughly 20 additional minutes, and we were tired and wanted to retire for the night. So, in summary, while the food was very good, and we weren't deterred by the dress code, still, given the class of restaurant and the price it would and did command, I must agree with my friend that they should have done something as a 'class' gesture on their part. Our first time here, one to remember! I checked out some of my bookmarks on Yelp and decided to dine here with my babe about a month ago. We started off with a appetizer... scallops... super scrumptious! Our meal... mighty tasty!! Our drinks... well my babe opts for his usual, Captain and Coke... but the balance was on point he said. Myself, I ordered a skinny margarita. While the waitress wasn't aware of how I wanted my margarita, I mentioned to her, the bartender should know... she returned with my drink... perfect! The restaurant isn't super huge inside, but it is quite intimate and sexy! The lighting is cozy and the bar scene was all the way live on this night in particular! The crowd was steady throughout the night... about 7pm to 9pm. The restaurant looks as though they have an outdoor patio. I couldn't tell because it was dark and the curtains were pulled. But if you get a chance to visit check it out. The restroom (women's) was tidy (only room for one) and fresh. Overall, our meals and the dining experience was stellar! We had reservations for New Year's Eve which were made a few weeks in advance. Large party of 15. But here is the run down. Reservation for 7pm. Dinner order wasn't taken until about 830. After 830 only about 3-4 people finally got their appetizers. Everyone was starving so it was very akward to have the few people eating in front of everyone else. One of those appetizers was the wrong order. But it was eaten anyway- because we were hungry lol. The crab Mac n cheese had very little crab. It was tasty- Lots of cheese but barely any crab. Closer to 9 pm some others at the table finally got their appetizers. We requested bread for the table. We didn't get bread. It never came. Two of us ordered crab soup and salad as our meals and that was served a little after 9pm. So two people were eating and 13 people were not. Again. Awkward. (The salmon on one of the salads was undercooked and raw in the middle and was not edible.) Around 915 one of our guest asked about the meals and when it would be ready. We were told it would be at least another 20 minutes. She asked to speak to a manager. The "manager" apologized and said they were overbooked. Then she offered to bring "extra bread" to the table - we told her that would be nice but it wouldn't be extra because we never got the first round of bread. At 945 pm - almost 3 hours after arriving- still no meals were served but the bread came out-- all of it was frozen in the middle. That was kind of the last straw. Half the table wanted to leave and cut their losses and asked for their checks for the drinks and the appetizers they ate. It was around this time that someone who looked like one of the cooks stormed out of the kitchen and appeared to leave. My sons were starving so I asked our waiter if I could wait for their meals and pay for them but take them home to go. He stated that he just wasn't sure where our meals were at this point. Checks were drawn up for everyone - and they still added the 20% mandatory tip for large parties. We were charged for and paid for everything we were served. Despite the night being a great disappointment .. Some of us even handed the waiter cash as extra tips on top of the mandatory 20% because he really looked so upset ( he apologized profusely), and we honestly didn't know whose fault it was that everything went so wrong. ( waiter or the kitchen- or us for reserving a large party on NYE). Maybe our party was just too large ( when we arrived we were told they might not have enough chairs for us all despite the reservation ??! And when we first opened the menu folders there was no menu in half of them. Just a blank folder. ) The reservations were made way in advance but we got the impression they were just not prepared for us. A few people stopped to get fast food at Cook Out drive thru before going home so that they had something to eat. Thank goodness they were still open. It really was a mess. read more

Gershwin's aesthetic inside and out is very unique. I get a Great Gaspy, kind of roaring 20s feel. The establishment is clean and at minimum they are following Covid regulations with the exception that our table was very close to another one. I had dinner reservations for 7 guests on a Thursday. Reservation process was really easy and I was even able to move it by 30min at the last minute. To my surprise it was very busy on a week day. I felt like our waitress was busy and didn't get help until 8pm when we were leaving. There was a Ahi Tuna Steak dish on Instagram posted last year that I was really looking forward to trying but it was not on the menu. I believe they changed up their menu. They had a limited menu which I understand many restaurants do now due to the pandemic. The two appetizer we got were Mushroom Mac and Cheese and Maryland Blue Crab Dip. The Mushroom Mac and Cheese was delicious. The crab dip tasted old and pita bread and rolls that came with it was kind of hard and dry. I had the Atlantic Salmon dish with brussel sprouts which was delicious and a good portion. My friends had a Steak Au Poivre which was a NY Strip. It was a good size and tasty. Another friend had the Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast. She said it was good but she enjoyed the mash potatoes more than the Duck. The best thing about this place is the live music entertainment. There is a small stage up front with a piano and music equipment. There was a live singer there singing soft and modern songs. I enjoyed the music while being able to talk and eat. The reason I'm giving this place a 4 star is because I do believe the service could be better. Also, I didn't feel like the food options wowed me. There are a lot of other places in the area with more memorable and delicious dishes. Gershwin's is about the coolest spot in town despite COVID limitations. We walked in for without reservations for cocktails and apps and discovered a true gem. While all of our drinks were perfectly constructed, the star of the show was the cherrywood smoked bourbon cocktails prepared by mixologist Nate. The scallops appetizer was beyond delicious, although the portion was a bit small. (Not a complaint...just a wish for more). What a find in Norfolk, VA.! Gershwin's restaurant was truly an outstanding culinary experience. We walked in with a piano player playing soft dinner music and all the employees were wearing 1920s clothing. We all said, "our food is delicious." Serene told us that they had a new chef and he was trying new dishes. Every dish we saw looked perfect. As we walked out from back of the restaurant, we heard a male singing. Not only did we have superb food and drinks, we had a pianist and a singer to serenade us as we left.
