Beautiful and cozy bar/speakeasy located in the trendy NuLu district. Nice upstairs bar with intimate basement bar. Great spot for friends, a date, or solo. Occasionally, they have live music. Very beautiful place, they do have three different entrance but there is always a person make you feel welcome. They do have beautiful speakeasy. All you have to ask for the entrance to speakeasy and they will give you the access. This time, I decided to stay upstairs and hang out at the bar. They have good selection of bourbon, Whiskey, gin, vodka, and rum. I do enjoyed the old fashioned that was recommended by the bartender. I do enjoy it a lot. We stumbled on Gertie's Sunday (They're piloting Sunday hours currently, go pop in and give them business then!) and had an absolutely lovely time. Service was fantastic, seriously such a welcoming and fun atmosphere. If we hadn't had plans after we would've had to be kicked out at bar close. And the drinks were so unique, well conceptualized, and delicious. The Meadow of Vines was my favorite of the night but they were all fabulous. My friends and I visited on a Saturday evening for a drink to end our night out. The server upstairs showed us the door to the speakeasy. It was our first visit and we were intrigued to see the space; however, we'd have been just as happy to stay upstairs. It was interesting as well and the crowd wasn't overwhelming. Downstairs offered a variety of seating, some that looked more comfortable than others. A small bar sat in the middle of the space and one server took care of the customers. He was welcoming and took our drink orders. I ordered the Nulu 52 which was a gin based drink. It was okay - very strong. Nothing other than the gin stood out, making it my least favorite gin drink I've had in awhile. Gertie's offers a quiet space for drinks. Reservations can be made online for the speakeasy, which could be helpful during weekend hours due to their limited seating. Located in Nulu, parking is available in the Nulu Marketplace lot or street parking. It's also near other bars if your group prefers a variety of spaces. read more

A very small bar, with an cool vibe but an utterly overwhelmed bartender. The behind-the-bar area looks like a walk trough for customers, which it is not and was rather confusing for patrons and I am sure utterly annoying for the employee. We were here during some important college sports game that was on, VERY loudly and heavily attended at the attached sports bar. It was really loud and kinda changed the whole feel of the space. In a way that instead of staying here for a second drink, we decided to so somewhere else...somewhere quieter and with a bigger menu. The drink we got (and we each ended up with the same drink) was alright. Not as sweet as I had hoped and that I generally like, but it was good. The menu online is updated since we went, so I can't remember what I got. But it was pretty ok. I might like to come back to try the speakeasy, or at least when there isn't a mass of sports fans screaming next door. But there are a lot of other options around to try as well. read more

Our service wasn't that great - In the sense that we waited a while with empty drinks before the bartender looked our way for me to flag her down. The drinks did come out quick and tasty. A little overpriced for what you get. The seasonal drink that I got was the "down the rabbit hole" and it came in a glorified shot glass. Not worth the 12+ dollars in my opinion because it wasn't strong at all but it tasted like juice. I was a little disappointed by this past trip since we have been here maybe two times before and had a good experience but that could have been because the last two times we came it was during off times/weekdays. SERVICE: the bartenders are amazing - I've always been greeted warmly and they've helped me greatly in my selections down to the types of liquor and best drinks for my palate. She seemed to find this offensive. Declaring "I am the bar manager. I design every drink. They are seasonal. I DONT use Pinterest. I've had Gertie's Whiskey Bar on my list since it opened recently, and last night I finally had my chance to check it out! And I'm so glad I got to visit this little spot, because it's offering up some big cocktails! They offer indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor area is small, but it's really beautiful. I loved the large bar in the center of the space. And, I was lucky enough to have the bartender walk me down into the speakeasy space so I could have a look at it as well, though it wasn't open during my visit. After checking out the space, my friend and I opted to sit outside. Our service was awesome! The bartender was very attentive and made sure we always had what we needed. I had the opportunity to try several cocktails, including the Spring Sangria, The Big Hat, the Emmylou, and a specialty cocktail for the day - the Nulu '92. All of them were delicious! They were all so perfectly refreshing for this time of year. Gertie's is definitely offering up an amazing seasonal menu, and I can't wait to see how it changes throughout the year. We also opted for a charcuterie from Torino's, the sandwich shop that's in the front area of Gertie's space. It was really delicious and contained items that would please anyone! I'm a bit of a picky eater in some regards, and I'm not into funky cheeses, so I was pleasantly surprised to find all of the included cheeses to be quite mild. It also included crackers, meats, nuts, grapes, dried apricots, gherkins, and mustard. If you're looking for an upscale cocktail experience, without the pomp and circumstance, you should definitely check out Gertie's. You'll pay for the upscale experience (cocktails are $14), but you won't have to worry about dressing up or feeling stuffy at all, which is just my speed! You can grab drinks and sit in the Nulu Marketplace courtyard, which is perfectly casual! And, as a bonus, you'll have the option to grab food from anywhere you'd like in the marketplace and enjoy it with your delicious cocktails. read more

I will miss the Problem Child drink when I leave the city- it tastes like a sweetart candy , but has this earthy, sweet and sour tinge to it. It has vodka,lychee, rosemary- and some other stuff I can't quite remember. Absolutely refreshing, Only drawback of the place is that it's quite small and tight inside, so it may get crowded. My fiancé and I visited twice on our weekend trip to Louisville. Our bartender, Alan, was super friendly and took time to talk to us about the city and cocktails since it was a little slow. He was great. The cocktails were also awesome and the place has a really cool feel to it. We were disappointed that the lower level speakeasy wasn't open during our visits, but I'm sure it would only add to my positive review. Such a cool bar in the Nulu Market square. The main bar where you walk in is fairly small. Cool vibe. The downstairs speakeasy is much bigger and has an even better vibe with couches and tables. There was a 20-minute wait when we arrived; wince we were only grabbing pre-dinner drinks, we stayed upstairs. The service was fantastic and the recommended drinks were delicious. The menu is unique and I won't tell you about the hidden secret in the basement. The bourbon list is extensive and recommend this place for a quiet, enjoyable experience. Only recommendation for the biz is that the whiskey list doesn't have prices on it. With disturbingly high prices on rare bourbon throughout the city, I hate asking about the price of a 1oz or 2oz pour when it's not available. From what I gathered, the prices here are reasonable or at least comparative to respectable businesses in the area. Will go again in the near future. read more

When we got in, the lady didn't let us through to the speakeasy until we bought a drink from her. I guess she wanted money because she said downstairs was busy, but when we got in, it wasn't busy at all. We missed the music because of her. My fiancé didn't like his drink. He expressed himself, and the bartender's responses were very rude. He still patiently explained to her. She did change the drink, but if you're in hospitality, you shouldn't become rude towards customers who are expressing themselves nicely. It's okay to say no and that you can't change it; we will pay for a new drink. However, you don't have to respond in a smart way while you're the bartender.so as a service it's disappointing. They need to learn a lot on that, place was nice, I like my drink , but bartenders are needs to learn about being in the hospitality business, or shouldn't be there at all if they can't act nicer and became ignorance read more
