With perfectly cooked bacon, crisp, cold lettuce, a beautiful, ripe, plump tomato with the right amount of mayo and some s&p and soft, lightly toasted bread. Not. What. I. Got. lol the bacon was burnt to a crisp, the tomato yellow and picked way too soon. No mayo. Hard bread. I also got a cup of tomato soup... also, not what you expect. I took a seat at the bar and really enjoyed a great meal in a laid back atmosphere at this cool restaurant. Outstanding service was provided by the bartender and I promised him a good review of the place on Yelp and I am happy to provide it! I can't say anything about the rest of the menu but the plate Short Ribs, mashed potatoes and gravy, and asparagus that I was served was outstanding! This alone is reason enough to go! I am sure that there are plenty of other great dishes on the menu but if you go with steaks, pay extra for ribeye over sirloin. Their onion rings are of the frozen variety so I wouldn't suggest that. I was drinking water but the bar selection looked fantastic and reasonably priced. I love locally owned small town businesses and this place is a winner in my book. read more

First time to visit this restaurant. We tried on Valentine's Day but was a 2 hour wait, so we went for lunch instead, the bread was wonderful. But only got 1 serving for 4 of us. I like the location and that there's hotels nearby , there's a bar next door called Nufos it's separate but you can go outside or inside and eat , the bar does have a easy way to get there just go thru the door or by the restroom, fast service and friendly smiling staff. Just passing through for the night and this was one of the only places on Yelp so we decided to try it. The waitress was working by herself and did a great job of keeping up. We had the spinach dip appetizer and it was ok, came out warm and could have used some more heating. The steaks for the price could not be beat, I had the 14oz strip and my wife had the small filet. Both had great flavor and were cooked close to what we asked. Foe the price we would definitely recommend GG Steak and Spirits. If you're looking for a decent meal at good pricing this is the place. I have good news to report! We had dinner on Wednesday 07/28/21 at 5:30pm and had a very pleasant experience. We we're the first of three couples during our visit. Our waitress was the one staff we saw, but she was fairly attentive and friendly. I could see just one hostess / server getting overwhelmed. Affordable drinks. Bread was warm enough to melt butter. Fried mushroom appetizers were good but frozen pre-made. Caesar salad was decent. I had the shrimp Alfredo and my husband ribeye with green beans & mashed potatoes. Entrees we're both good! Raspberry cheesecake was okay again pre-made. Bread pudding however stole the show! So good!! All normal dining prices. We would return! read more

First impression, the decor is modern but bland. Complementary sourdough bread was served cold without butter. The drinks were served in plastic cups (really? Why?). Server said she would bring plates for appetizers, none came. The chips and queso appetizer was disappointing, seemed like maybe it was a melted velveeta with a few chopped peppers. salad served with the wrong dressing and it took a few minutes to get the servers attention to correct it. Steak salad served with cold steak. Wife's plate was served with wrong side item so they took the plate away to correct it. After about seven minutes it was returned with hot squash, barely ukewarm steak and cold broccoli. Son's steak fries served lukewarm and turned cold quickly because everything is served on cold plates in a cold dining area. The cuts of meat were fine and the food quality WOULD have been good if served properly and timely. Sadly,, the presentation and plating failed badly. Check arrived and we were charged for a filet when son ordered sirloin. So, of four meals, exactly none of them were correct. read more

The mashed potatoes were boxed and bland, the green beans were cooked to death and tasted like canned. The chicken breast was burnt and not good. The chicken Alfredo was bland but somewhat edible. The bar drinks are pretty decent. What I did find that was 5 star tasty and quality for the price was the burgers. So stick to the burgers and the chips/dip appetizer. I'm always reluctant to post a negative review on a family owned business if I get the impression they are doing their best. This was the worst dining experience I have ever had. There were only 2 tables occupied at 7:00 last Saturday. We should have left then. Service was incredibly slow with only about 8 customers. Bread and butter was delicious Fried mushrooms were inedible. Spinach Artichoke Dip was served cold. Two identical cocktails were ordered. Both were prepared incorrectly. One was only 1/3 full in the glass but made at the same time. How was that not noticed? Twenty minutes after we ordered our steaks, we were told they were out of baked potatoes and roasted carrots. How does this happen in a Steakhouse? There is an HEB two minutes away. We chose alternate sides and food arrives 20 minutes later. Everything was inedible. The filet at $21.99 was actually a cheap sirloin that could not be cut with the knife provided. The substitute Mac and cheese was about 10 pieces of cold penne pasta with a handful of cold Sysco cheddar thrown on top. We felt terrible for the server. She was a very sweet young lady who seemed very embarrassed by what came from the kitchen. This restaurant shows no pride or care into what they serve. Times are tough, and I wish them the best. Went to GG's last night with a friend. Now on the surface you don't expect much from Gonzales as most of the visible restaurants are fast food joints. Now we were staying at the Holiday Inn Express and my partner was really hungry. I didn't want to drive so I pointed out GG's. Right next door. Now I admit, we came in on a Monday night at 7:00 pm and the place was empty. I'm thinking, "this place sells shoe leather for steaks". Nothing could be further from the truth. We were promptly seated and our waitress was very attentive. I ordered gin and tonic for a drink and it was nice and stiff, not watered down. For a meal I got conservative and ordered a shrimp ceviche, my partner ordered grilled King salmon. My ceviche was excellent, avocado, shrimp, tomatoes and onions. My partner loved her grilled salmon. All this for about 40 bucks. For those who are snooty, this place is not a top flight steak house, but it is still very good and I would be glad to eat here again.. One last note, a lot of people in this review process talk about sides, as a Midwesterner, I consider sides a condiment, just me. read more

I first went to GG's a month ago and ordered the Filet, medium. What I got was a well done rock. They tried to fix it and the replacement came out almost raw. I told them I would give them a try a different night and left. When I returned a few weeks later, I ordered the same thing. It came out raw and the baked potato was literally cold to the touch. I left again. Being that they are one of just a few restaurants in town and I am visiting for work, I tried it again, tonight. Of course my steak came out way undercooked. The best part is that when I told my story to the manager and asked him if he could get me a properly cooked steak his reply was "probably not". If you eat here, good luck to you. read more

While visiting family this is always a must stop on my trip. Tonight we walked in to see a large birthday party and another large table as well as many more tables full. I was hesitant at first thinking this normally quiet 2-3 table restaurant was going to be overwhelmed. It was very obvious the staff was working full speed to keep their head above water but they were excellent and very attentive. This place was TERRIBLE. Four tables were sat after us, got their waitress, drinks and food before we even saw a waitress. We had to ask for someone to come help us. We ordered shrimp with our steak, we're told it would be a 30 minute wait for the shrimp, so we just said, that's okay we won't wait for them. Ten minutes later she comes out and said the shrimp were ready and threw an attitude at us for not wanting them. Our drinks were empty more than half of our meal. Overview - The food was amazing. Came to Gonzalez for the night on the way to San Antonio. Walking distance from Holiday Inn and it was highly recommended. Service - The service was great from the start. Had a new server but his effort and attentiveness was outstanding. What I assume is the manager came by and checked in on us continually. Appetizers- egg rolls - were crunchy and perfect. No complaints here Entree - medium rare rib eye with blue cheese - so tender and delicious. Lots of blue cheese. Entree - medium rare rib eye with blue cheese and mushrooms- the mushrooms are a MUST HAVE. They're cooked in red wine and the rib eye just stands out. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Sides - beets, corn, mashed potatoes (didn't order but minor miscommunication), rosemary roasted potatoes and green beans. Loved them all!! Beets were the perfect crisp and flavor, green beans had that fresh steamed snap, roasted potatoes could've use a little bit of flavor but cooked crispy on the outside with perfect insides and the small taste of mashed potatoes I had (not really my favorite because I'm picky about texture) tasted good (garlic butter flavor and whipped texture no lumps). Dessert - peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Took everything in me not to lick the bowl. Took some time but only because I know it was cooked fresh. Atmosphere - The ONLY complaint I have (and in my opinion it is minor because I'm mostly there for food) was that it is directly attached to the bar that was having karaoke next door. Not my favorite for atmosphere purposes but luckily it was separated by wall and door so it wasn't TOO bad. It just clashed having a classy dining set up with a karaoke bar background noise. We left and posted a negative comment on both Yelp and Facebook, swearing not to return. We were contacted the next day by the manager with an apology and an invitation to give them another chance. We determined not to return anyway. Tonight we decided to give it another try. We were greeted by the manager and both the service and the food was so good that we refused to allow them to pay for our meal. The pork tenderloin and ribeye were done to perfection. They were a little busy and has only two people working, but they pulled it off without leaving drinks empty or us waiting to see them. We got the chicken fried steak, a regular steak, and a pasta with chicken cooked with wine. All was more than expected for the little town of Gonzales, steak had really good flavor, although being medium well, not medium. CFS was just ok, the fingerling potatoes were not fresh at all. Pasta dish was descent not spectacular, the building itself is very nice, newly built, with a very nice atmosphere.
