This was our (party of 2) first time to visit Gia Mia. The hostess started things off well by having a welcoming attitude as she showed us to our table. We were served by Jamie, who was perfect, she was there when we needed something but she didn't hover. We were pleased with the food. We are not gourmands but the pizza had a delightful char to it and refreshing choices of toppings. For a starter we had arancini, yum! To finish, how could we go wrong with delightful tiramisu, we couldn't. The man who saw to it that we never ran out of water was also welcoming and warm. We love Gia Mia! Such a lovely spot for upscale comfort pasta dishes, tasty wood fire pizzas and lots of yummy shareables! My go-to order is the bolognese and my husband's is the vodka pasta. But when we are in the mood for it we love to split a pasta and pizza! Also highly recommend the wild mushroom toast appetizer to share for fungi lovers. For kids, there are several options and an affordable kids meal. It's a great spot to go for a casual/nice meal with the whole family or on a date! At our most recent trip, we had great quick service with a very friendly waitress. Tried this location for Gia Mia. It's smaller but similar to another location I've been to. We ordered the meatballs to start, then got a Margherita pizza with spicy soppressata and the prosciutto and arugula pizza. The meatballs were good, especially with the polenta. No complaints there, and the sauce had great flavor. Both pizzas were good overall. The arugula one could definitely use a little more flavor -- I asked for balsamic, and that made it better. This review is for the recent, five course, Tour of Italy wine dinner at Gia Mia Downers Grove. (3.5 stars) This was the first such wine dinner at this location. There were two problems with this dinner; noise and the timing of the food coming out of the kitchen. My wife and I were seated at the end of a long table across from each other. It was impossible to have a conversation across the table because of the din in the room. After a few minutes we switched seats with the couple next to us such that we were seated NEXT TO our spouses as opposed to across from each other. That helped but you still had to lean in to hear each other. It was impossible to hear the staff when they were describing the food or the wines we were having. I'm not sure what Gia Mia could do about this. Lots of hard surfaces. Nothing to adsorb sound. The other problem was that the food was coming out of the kitchen much too fast. We didn't have time to enjoy a course or the paired wine when the next course was being served. Things only got worse as the dinner progressed. As I was finishing my third course I had that wine in front of me. The wine for the next course had already been poured. It was only a few minutes later that they were pouring the wine for the dessert course. So at this point I had three wine glasses in front of me. Earlier in the meal a server wanted to take an unfinished glass of wine from me. I indicated that I wanted to keep it. My wife, who has conducted many similar wine dinners when she was working, commented, "They are running short. They need your glass". The front of the house staff was excellent. They tried very hard to make sure guests were taken care of. They kept smiling thru this entire ordeal. One of our tests of restaurant service is whether or not used tableware is replaced or do they just take it off your plate and put it on the table. They replaced the tableware. The food was good except for the olive oil cake for dessert. It was hard. The wine was average. The Gia Mia in Wheaton had a similar noise problem. They hung baffles from the ceiling that helped a great deal. The Naperville Gia Mia has a similar noise problem. They haven't done anything about it yet. read more

I'll keep it short and sweet- we love Gia Mia! The Chicken Parmesan is one of the best I've ever had and a go to every time. We tried a couple new dishes due to a menu change (bring back the mushroom toast!!). The whitefish was outstanding, the pesto chicken pasta was solid but nothing worth writing home about. The real disappointment of the meal was the calamari- many pieces of just breading, as well as fried lemons and veggies and only a few decent pieces of calamari- would not recommend. This was our first time here. We went on a Wednesday night. It was pretty busy. The restaurant has plenty of seats and also an outdoor patio. They have a table for us right away. We ordered the Tuscan shrimp and polenta, paccheri vodka, and linguine carbonara. The shrimp and polenta were good. It wasn't too salty when mixed with the polenta. There was a kick from the pepper. The linguine carbonara was creamy with the Parmesan cream and the egg yolk. It was delicious with the bacon. I wish the portion were a little bigger. The paccheri vodka was also good with delicious vodka sauce with sausage. The waiter was nice and friendly. He gave us recommendations on what is good on the menu. FAMILY VALUES A spur-of-the-moment lunch turned into one of the most affordable meals we've had all summer. When my wife suggested we take the kids to eat at an Italian restaurant on a Saturday, I immediately saw dollar signs flashing before my eyes and tried pivoting to a less-expensive option ("is Wendy's OK?") As it turns out, I had no reason to be worried for my wallet. Gia Mia is right on the corner of Main St in downtown Downers Grove, just a stone's throw from the train station. It can get loud when the Metra stops to offload passengers, so if you're sitting outside on their patio expect noise from commuter trains. Parking is available in the lot across the tracks or on the street in front, if you're lucky. The inside is beautiful with lots of natural wood and tasteful lighting. Pints were fair at $7/ea, the wifey had a couple Stella Artois while I had two Half Acres (does that mean I drank a Full Acre??) Staff were more than accommodating to our party of four and we felt taken care of as customers, especially the kiddos. For apps, we got the arancini (6 for $14), delicious balls of creamy risotto in a sea of garlic tomato sauce, which were amazing. Our 4yo loved his cheese pizza ($5) and our little girl had the spaghetti & meatball ($6) off the kids' menu. These were ideal portion sizes and a really good value. I hate when places overcharge for some reheated bullsh*t, like kids won't know the difference between a homemade pizza and a frozen one tossed in the microwave. Gia Mia doesn't play those kinds of games, and I respect the hell out of them for that! Bread = 5 Circuses = 4.5 I was pleasantly surprised to see lunch specials on the weekends. The majority of restaurants are full price Fri-Sun, so we couldn't pass up on a pizza + side salad for $13. My wife chose the caramelized onion & pear pizza (blue cheese, arugula, balsamic) and a baby kale salad w/beets and whipped ricotta. I thought the bbq chicken pizza and Italian farm salad were perfect. Great stuff all around. * TL;DR * Get this: 2 adults (guzzling 2 drinks each) plus 2 kids had an absolutely delightful lunch - on a SATURDAY - for under $90. In downtown Downers. Yeah, I'm shocked too. Gia Mia is very welcoming to families, from the attitude of the friendly servers to the reasonably-priced kids menu. Being able to take advantage of a lunch special on a weekend is almost unheard of, so kudos to management for featuring this (please continue doing so!) Amazing experience! Friends and I came to Gia Mia for the first time this evening. Food was fantastic and reasonably priced for Italian cuisine in my opinion. The Downers Grove location is very cute, located right in the heart of downtown. Street parking could get scarce, but we came on Saturday evening around 6PM and there were plenty of open spaces available. We got the butternut squash risotto ($21), linguini fini carbonara ($18), pacherri vodka ($20), and margherita pizza to share ($14). All dishes tasted great, very fresh especially the pizza. Even though pasta is a heavy dish, I did not leave feeling groggy or greasy from the pasta here. Our server Madeline was very sweet and kind. There is a free public parking lot nearby as well. Our server was very friendly and attentive. He made sure our food was to our liking. For starters, we all shared the Meatballs al Forno, Zucchini Frites, Wild Mushroom Toast, and Prosciutto + Fig Bruschetta. All were great! For my main, I got the Paccheri Vodka (not spicy). I loved the larger noodles that were cooked al dente. The sauce and flavor were perfectly savory. Our group got a large mix of pastas, pizzas, and entrees and all were liked. Overall, my experience at Gia Mia was wonderful. This is the perfect spot to come for a date night, catch up with friends, or to dine with a larger group. Be sure to add to your list to visit! The decor is fairly minimalistic yet gives off a friendly and casual vibe. Services was great, our group was seated right away and within minutes we were asked for our drink orders. For drinks I tried the watermelon and basil martini. This drink is refreshing and light. Nothing tasted artificial and I really enjoyed and appreciated this well crafted cocktail. For food I tried the paccheri vodka pasta and it was DELICIOUS. The noodles must be made in house as they were fresh, made and cooked perfectly. The vodka sauce was also fantastic - there was a bit of heat to this dish which kept me wanting to eat more. Pasta dishes are very good, in particular the Rigatoni and (when available) Lasagna Bolognese. Very good list of wines by the glass and several local microbrews. Yes, they have very good Neapolitan style pizza, we have had it on occasion, but their other dishes are just too good to miss. What a lovely little Italian inspired pizzeria. You cannot go wrong with wood- fired pies, at least I have not so far. We ordered the Stinger, and it was delicious, savory, sweet, fluffy with an outer crust. We were also able to try some of their classic Caesar, spot on, nothing out of the ordinary there. The calamari is delicious, not chewy, cooked perfectly and crispy on the outside. Also, the Paccheri Vodka was delightful, packed with the right amount of flavor and its sausages gave it a little extra salty kick. The interior was nice and clean, modern, and decent in size, a respectable number of tables and the staff was nice as well and fast. The parking is not the best. I only assume on busy days since this is such a nice restaurant there would be a larger lot, but it is a little minimal, but we did find parking with just a little walk to consider. If I am ever in the area I would not mind coming back and enjoying the other options here. But this place did not disappoint, so why not give it a shot. read more

While it was an upscale pizzeria & easy Italian restaurant, we were absolutely blown away by the service, and in particular, Ashley H. She truly made the experience fantastic with her charm & attention to detail. My husband and I went for a post-commute date night after getting off the metra, and every single staff person we met was super friendly and quick. We shared the peas on toast, Italian farm salad and "the stinger" pizza. We left completely full and appreciated the fresh, bold flavors throughout. Too long to describe but the kid failed to bring both drinks, slammed my son's lemonade drink on table , walked away , 10 min later still no drink for me as it sat at bartender station. I paid for lemonade , spoke to mgr and we walked. No excuse for bad service and that kid needs some coaching on how to be a good server. Even for a local chain restaurant in a high traffic area and being polite, professional, smile , offer menu description, suggestions, summer drink suggestions ( up sell) " can I start you with an appetizer " " have you dined with us before?"
