I came in to Capri for the first time today. The last time I was here I came in at like 5 o'clock on a Wednesday to the bar, and I noticed that there was karaoke, and I instantly turned around and left. Nobody wants to hear karaoke at 5 o'clock, just saying at least not me. So today I give this place another chance and I get here right at 4:15 PM. The place was empty. The music was blasting loud. The lighting was very dim because it was very dark throughout the whole bar and furthermore, it was freaking cold. Yeah, I get that. It's -9° outside however, inside a hotel I expected the heat to be working. I was greeted right away by a guy who was bald And he was very friendly and very nice. However, I was there for happy hour, and that's all I was really interested in, but he was too busy trying to sell me the lasagna and Joey's pork chop and this steak and that steak in this risotto and gluten-free this and tell your friends if you don't have any gluten allergies, blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah blah blah blah. Furthermore, it was so loud I couldn't understand anything he was saying. However "A for Effort!" as I looked at the happy hour menu he kept referring to the wines as "house wines" being a person who knows a lot about wine. I asked him what the brand names of the house wines were. He responded with Mezzacorona, Which is basically on the same platform as yellowtail in my opinion. Just cheap and not appealing. I would expect a deal that happy hour not to get robbed and for seven dollars a glass you're getting robbed. I decided to go for the Rufino Ducale tan label that was listed at $15 a glass on their menu. I wasn't sure exactly how long I was gonna stay for But after my second glass of wine, I noticed that I could buy the bottle for $45 and was thinking about a third glass anyway, and when I asked the bartender if I could just finish the bottle because I saw the Bartender open that bottle, he responded that he couldn't change anything in the computer and then once I ordered a glass I had to stick with the glasses and I couldn't switch to a bottle.. I was very put off by that because that just seems stupid because you do have customers that might think they want one glass, but all the sudden want the bottle and if you have a new glass from a new bottle and no one else is drinking that wine why not just saw the Customer that bottle of wine, right?! in any case the Bartender was nice about it and explained that their computer system had to be edited by the hotel manager, which doesn't make any sense at all that there's not any manager in the restaurant and the owner is vacationing in Florida somewhere but yet you have a full-service restaurant with issues that you have no manager there to handle situations Except for a server pretending to be a manager. Doesn't set a good tone in my book just saying. The other thing too the sausage and peppers were disgusting. The sausage was dried out and it was way over oily. I literally only ate one of the sausages and a couple of the peppers and the Bartender did not notice that I wasn't enjoying them and I said to get rid of them and he didn't ask me if I like them or not at any time . I did order the calamari the Capri style and they were good but again way too much oil I'm not used to calamari being soaked in oil. I'm used to having a red sauce or a marinara sauce on the side. I guess I expected olive oil to be drizzled over it according to the menu description, they didn't say that your lightly fried calamari sits and a half a pound of oil because I would not have ordered that either so the food in my book sucks sorry just saying. What really set me off after this whole visit was the deceptive price increases on the check versus what the menu said. Also, there was some kind of Illinois labor fee listed that was apparently a processing fee for credit cards? Why not just come out and say processing fee wire listed as some kind of Illinois bullshit labor, fair wage fee or whatever it said! Stayed the night in Chicago and was craving some Italian food so gave Capri a shot. The owner Joey greeted me and was very kind and courteous. My bartender was gracious. Caesar salad was very good but unfortunately the veal parm lacked flavor as the marinara sauce was very plain and the linguini pasta was not good. He was kind, efficient, attentive, and most accommodating. I don't know how you can cook a 1 pound meatball all the way through ~ but it was indeed cooked through and delicious. Our food was served piping hot and the portions were very generous. There were 2 dining areas and the bar had tables along the perimeter. It was a Saturday evening with live entertainment which was wonderful. Rarely do I find the entertainment to be that pleasant. However, the down side: it was very loud and difficult to hear the person sitting right next to you. There is valet parking and the parking lot is very busy. I've never given a second thought to a dinner salad but the dressing was really good. We had a surprise birthday party there and the severs were great. The room looked great. The drinks were a bit pricey but it's a hotel so.... The "bartender" bless his heart didn't know how to make drinks. He tried but service was extremely slow. We again had the blacken salmon W/risotto and it was as good this time as it was the first time! Excellent!! When my party of 4 arrived we were asked if we wanted to sit in the room with or without music, we chose without, however, that didn't really matter since the without music room only meant the band played in the other room, however the piped in music was very loud and it was almost impossible to hear across the table. Later the band started and it was even louder. By band, I mean a singer with a korokke machine backup. The food was just as bad as the "band". The soup was pasta fagioli that arrived lukewarm with little pasta, 1 or 2 tubate. Veal Marsala was smothered in a sweet Marsala sauce that tasted like candy and the mushrooms were obviously from a can. The sauce overflowed the veal and drowned out the linguine marinara. After sending this dish back I tried the Homemade Rigatoni Bolognese. Another disappointment. The rigatonis were overly large with a mushy texture that can't be described as al dente, only gross. The Bolognese sauce was not a true ragu, rather it was a tomato base meat sauce. I have had better sauces out of a bottle. The last insult to my dinner was being charged $30 for this terrible pasta. A week before I called and asked if we could add 2 more people and the man on the phone told me he would have to let me know tomorrow, which was fine, they had just opened. He called the next day and left a voice-mail that he was able to add 2 more people and confirmed that he was the manager and we are set. For a hotel connected restaurant, this place was actually pretty good. We sat at a table out by the bar as the main dining room is a little dark and we wanted to see the TVs. We had an assortment of traditional dishes and everything was really good. I had the lasagna which is a ridiculously large portion... enough to share 3 ways! It was cooked well and had a good balance of meat, sauce, cheese and pasta. Only reason I gave it 4 stars is that the service was a little slow and a couple of us ran out of drinks. We stopped here on a Sunday evening and there was literally 1 person working as bartender and table server/buss. by mid-meal, the bar filled up and our server was halustling but unfortunately couldn't keep up. I felt bad that he had no one else to support him and this is definitely a management issue. The food was just ok - definitely expensive for the quality. Food was tasty and a good portion size. However it's on the pricier side ($17 app and $29 entree). Entree includes salad side and bread. With the $15 daily credit for doubletree, it makes it more reasonable when you want convenience at the hotel. Would definitely order again when I'm staying at the hotel. My wife and I were searching for a special Italian dinner and BOY DID WE FIND ONE. We made a reservation but we met at the door by the owner and seated immediately. Our waiter arrived shortly explained the menu and took our drink orders. After our drinks arrived he answered questions and made recommendations and asked what we were looking for. Talked us into the Calamari appetizer and it was EXCELLENt ! MY wife had veal francesca and there was a lot there and it was very good. I chose to try the "special" lasagna and WOW, it was great, and huge. Ended the evening with frangelica and gelato for a really great meal. I attended an event at Osteria and had a great time and was excited to try it for dinner. The cocktails and food were good. Relative to other Italian restaurants in this price point the menu was unfortunately un-interesting and about 20% overpriced. The service was sub par. We didn't get our cocktails until midway through our appetizer and wine came out half way through the entre. We ordered a $50 bottle of wine and were served a $90 (shame on us for not being more diligent on checking). We ordered spaghetti for our six year old but were charged for the regular dinner portion. All small things but in total not a good experience. Perhaps an off night for the staff but sadly this will not be a repeat for us. read more

It was not the best particularly given the $14 price tag and that were in a town known for its pizza. My son had the lemon veal with pasta and the veal was tough. I am torn on this because the food is 4-5 but the service is 2-3 but I am giving a 3 because of the expectations surrounding due to chef's notoriety. The restaurant is inside the Doubletree Hotel and not marked anywhere, which was strange. Most restaurants that sit inside of a hotel have some signage on the outside. I have been once for lunch and once for dinner. I sat at the bar both times. It was empty on a Sunday at noon but busy for dinner during the week. I do appreciate the interior colors and decor, despite being in a hotel. They also have a very nice back room for private parties. I liked that, unlike many restaurants inside a hotel, the restrooms were right in the dining room and nice as well. As any newly constructed restaurant should, they also have outlets under the bar, which is a huge plus when compared to spots that are older. What fell short was the service. When we were there for dinner, two different couples ended up leaving without ordering food because no one would come to them. One of them verbally complained but the other just up and left. Meanwhile, I saw four employees standing around chatting. It was so strange. I wasn't sure why they had two servers when the dining area is small and nearly everyone was seated at the bar. Even so, one of them should have jumped in as opposed to standing there watching football. Everyone that has served us has been very friendly and easy to talk to but just no sense of urgency. The only person there that had that urgency was a man named John, who didn't actually serve us as he was coming on as we were leaving. Being nice is good but prompt service is just as important if not moreso. They were literally losing revenue simply due to people not paying attention or being too slow. I tried a few cocktails and they were good but not great. They are trying to be known for cocktails so they really need to bring this up a notch. Perhaps bring in a consultant, one of the well-knowns in Chicago like Michael Simon or the like to really make extraordinary cocktails. I always get the meatballs at Sienna Tavern and Bar Sienna so I had to get here and they did not disappoint. They are the same as he is known for and excellent. I highly recommend. Another win were the truffle purse pasta. The pasta itself was wonderful and they use real truffle as opposed to dousing it in a bunch of truffle oil and calling it a day. I enjoyed the pizza but the middle was definitely too soggy, especially since it was told to us that they have Roma style pizza. This is supposed to be airy and crispy, which it was not (perhaps the staff was incorrect). However, the sausage on the pizza was literally the best sausage I've ever had on pizza. This is legit. The one dish I was confused about was the carpaccio. Firstly, the meat itself was a bright pink instead of the deep red you usually see. I'm not sure if they corned it a bit or something but it was a bit strange. It came with blue cheese, which was overwhelming for the delicate meat, which had no olive oil on it. Lastly, they covered every inch of it with mushrooms, which took over the dish. It was certainly more like a mushroom dish than a carpaccio. I think this is something easily rectified by simply changing the prep to something more traditional. Overall, food is great but service is lacking. read more

My husband and I were so excited to find out that Osteria is finally back open!! And they did not disappoint on our first experience back! From the cocktails to dessert - it was all delicious. The Little Italy cocktail is a must try... a combination of bourbon, aperol, hibiscus and lemon - it works so well together and nothing is overpowering, just a harmonious blend. For appetizers, definitely couldn't skip the pizza! Their crust and sauce are fantastic. For our mains, my husband had the Osteria Burger and I had the Pacherri Bolognese. SO GOOD. All of it. Everything is thoughtfully prepared and seasoned so well. We finished the meal with a piece of Pistachio Cake - OMG. Heaven. One of the best desserts I've had; it was perfectly light and reminiscent of cannoli filling. We both took home leftovers and can't wait to enjoy for lunch. We also ordered a pizza to-go, because my husband has missed their pizza so much, he needed another. Lol. And they timed it perfectly, bringing it out with the check. Disappointing. Our nephew was staying at the hotel and we decided to take him to dinner at the restaurant. We had not done enough research to know they had loud music in the evenings, disco ball and wedding music. We asked to change tables because the music was excessively loud we could not talk . My husband and nephews meals were so so, nothing to brag about but decent. I requested dressing on the side for my dinner salad. Shortly after I started eating I realized it was floating in dressing. The waiter was very busy and didn't come back by. I finally asked the water boy to get my waiter. I had hoped he would have them remake my salad but that didn't happen. Multiple items on the menu were not available as the kitchen was out of the necessary ingredients (most of the appetizers as well as 2 entrees) Multiple wine options and limited drink options also due to insufficient stocks. The meatballs were reheated and the crusted bread from that appetizer appeared to be the bottom of a hamburger bun that had been charred to disguise the fact that they were likely out of the usual bread. Salmon was cooked well. The drinks that were available were pretty good. The space itself looked cool, though being the only table on a Saturday night kinda ruins the vibe. Very good pasta and bread. We had the Focaccia and it was freshly baked and yummy. Two pastas: the bolognese and chicken sun-dried tomato pasta--both delicious and generous portions. The red wine (CA blend, by the glass) was a nice value for the price point. Classic margaritas were bitter and tasted like they forgot the orange liquor or overdid sour mix or lime juice. I asked for a shot of Gran Marnier to sweeten them, and the cost of two margaritas soared from $26 up to $38---hardly worth that, so I'd skip their mixed drinks, in the future. Chicken Noodle soup was delicious. We became too full to try desserts. We were the only patrons on a Saturday night from 4-5 pm and the staff said they do not get many locals stopping in -- too bad, because it competes well with other Italian restaurants in the area. So, the plus here is no risk of covid exposure when you're the only two people in a room! Yes, 18% percent gratuity is added in check, even for two people. This restaurant is racist! Most people talk about them receiving slow service, but my experience was much weirder: On Friday, February 28th my family hosted an annual family retreat at the Double Tree in Downersgrove. It was about 20 of us that attended. We had conference rooms reserved and everything. We put a lot of planning into the event to make sure it is all relaxing and fun. The last day of the retreat was Saturday, February 29th. On the last day, we have a fancy dinner. This time we had dinner at the Osteria. We were seated first and the restaurant was pretty scarce. We had ordered our food beforehand so it was already prepared. The waiters/waitresses put out some water and bread. Then our food is brought out. At this time, the restaurant is full of people. The food was okay, but the weird part is that our table did not have a server. NO ONE asked us if we wanted wine, champagne, or anything else to drink. NO ONE asked us for appetizers. We were the first to attend and the last to leave the restaurant. We were the only black people in the restaurant and it was such a strange feeling to see waiters and waitresses attend to everyone else, but us. It was like they didn't want us there. At the end of night they gave us our bills. There was no gratuity in the bill. NO ONE asked us if we wanted desert. My mother and I ordered desert. We ordered some sorbet and gelato. It took them 45 minutes to bring it to us and we were the last people in the entire restaurant. They could have made so much money off of us, if they just gave us the service that we watch them give EVERYONE else. I have called and complained at the restaurant twice and each time i was told that a manager would be calling me in two business days, but i have yet to receive a call. I normally frequent high end restaurants because I am lawyer in Downtown Chicago, and i have experienced this twice before. There is no more awkward feeling than your entire table of white co-workers being served and the waiter intentionally passes over you, like you don't exist. read more
