The Hill is worth visiting in St. Louis--Gioia deli (sandwich), Anthonino's Taverna (pizza), Adriana's (sandwich). I haven't tried many restaurants on the Hill to comment whether this place has the best dishes or spaghetti, but Gian holds a special place in my St. Louis repertoire for personal reasons. It has also been around for ages and has a dedicated local following. Our orders: Complimentary bread: it's a pass for me. Ask for olive oil and balsamic vinegar at the least. Calamari Fritti ($14): the calamari was good but the breading could have used more seasoning or flavor. But with the homemade marinara sauce this is really good. Cappellini Alla Gian Tony's ($20) cappellini with sauteéd onion and Italian ham, homemade marinara, touch of white wine: this was my favorite! It's worth it Linguine con pesce ($22) shrimp and clams, sautéed with mushrooms and tomato, served in a seafood broth, with a touch of white wine: not a fan, tiny shrimps and skimped on the topping but the seafood broth was tasty read more

The service was impeccable. Our waiter was professional, quick and kept the drinks filled. The food was less remarkable. We started with a house salad which was quite generic. The lettuce was crisp, but other than small carrot flakes, had no real interesting taste. The off-menu appetizer was seafood stuffed mushrooms. A serving of 4 mushrooms was tasty, but drenched in marinara so we were really unable to taste any seafood flavor. The menu had no fish option, so I ordered the shrimp scampi. Slightly charred, the shrimp was medium sized and while visually pleasing was pretty plain. The accompanying pasta was good! Overall, basic Italian dishes with excellent service. read more

You really can't go wrong with any of the Italian restaurants on The Hill. Gina-Tony's authentic food did not disappoint! I sat at the bar and Rosa did a terrific job taking care of me. I recommend eating at Gioia's Deli across the street for lunch, and Gian-Tony's for dinner. read more

We went here for New Years Eve dinner so the service was a bit slow, but overall had a great experience. This restaurant took me back to my childhood dining on the hill days. Traditional dishes, white linens, & dark ambiance. As far as attire, I would dress nice-casual. For example, you could get away with wearing dark jeans and a nicer top and I wouldn't say you have to break out your pearls, but look nice. We ordered the eggplant Parmesan appetizer to share. It was two pieces. One was a thicker piece which I don't usually like. For our main entree we ordered 3 entrees and chose to all share it. Lobster Ravioli - was outstanding so good Penne a la vodka - my daughter was craving this but it wasn't on the menu so we asked William and he said they could make it. They usually make it with peas and mushrooms but it you don't want it they will not put that in. Gian-Tony's is our favorite Italian joint on The Hill. When we lived in STL, we stopped in multiple times, so we stopped back again when in town for work. We were promptly greeted by the owner/chef, Tony... Super nice guy. The service was awesome and all the employees are ultra-friendly and accommodating (shout out to our server, William... We've had him before and he's always great). The inside could use a bit of a makeover, but the vibe is classic Italian and dining room is clean and well kept (Reminds me of a scene from Good Fellas).. As for the food... Next level -- Tony's cuisine is outstanding. My family is Italian and his red sauce is as close to my Grandma's/Mom's that I've found. All-in-all, Tony runs a heck of a restaurant and his food is arguably the best on The Hill (and offered at a fraction of what you'd pay at Charlie Gitto's or Favazza's, which frankly are over-rated and not nearly as good as Gian-Tony's). Visiting Gian-Tony's is like taking a step back in time! We tried a few different appetizers the but found they were both too small to really get a good feeling for it. The eggplant appetizer was delicious though! I got the chicken primera I believe it was called and the chicken and cheese and sauce were quite bland and dry and the side order of noodles in a Alfredo sauce tasted like noodles in milk same blandness. My wife got the tortellini and that was incredible! Our server William was AMAZING, super attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The ambiance isn't too loud inside, the music is nice and you feel right at home when Tony comes by your table. Oh and the cannoli I had for dessert was the best I have ever had! read more

Very disappointed. Took a double take that a carafe of Chianti was $40. There were 4 of us. We ordered pastas - very simple but ... it took ONE HOUR for us to be served and we didn't even have salads! When we asked the waiter about our order he went on and on and on about 2 cooks in the kitchen, people with reservations(which we had), etc etc ... rant of excuses ... made matters worse!! The lights in the dining room flickered the entire time - we waited for a power outage, as it was quite annoying. On of our cousins' favorite places to eat on The Hill. They were sharing great St Louis Italian food with us, their California cousins. Everyone was so friendly but also very efficient. We started with toasted ravioli with marinara sauce with meat. So delicious. Next was house salad with the best dressing. Yum. My husband had the tortellini and shared a bite with me. We loved it. I had chicken spedinin with broccoli and a provel cheese sauce. It was sooo good. Dessert was shared between the four of us - Tiramisu and Spumoni ice cream in a hard chocolate shell. Both terrific. Unquestionably one of the better Italian meals I've ever tasted. For those unfamiliar, "The Hill" is the old Italian section of St. Louis where baseball greats Joe Garagiola and Yogi Berra were raised. The Hill is packed with superb Italian dining, and Gian-Tony's is a fine example. Make reservations at any of the establishments or you may leave disappointed. We started with a carafe of house Chianti and ordered fried calamari and eggplant parmigiana as appetizers. The calamari was lightly fried, not a hint of extra oil, and served with a rich marinara. The eggplant, also breaded, was baked, smothered in marinara and mozzarella was broiled as a topping. Both delicious. Our group of 4 tore right through them. Bread was brought to the table. Fresh, yes. But served cold with cold butter patty's wrapped in foil. I would have expected warm bread, possibly garlic bread and "scoops" of butter that I didn't have to unwrap. Did it spoil the meal? Not a bit. The salad, mostly lettuce, was fine for one. My wife's seafood ravioli was delicious. But with meager stuffing of shrimp, lobster and scallops. My friends Chicken Romano was inhaled. I can only assume he liked it. The Spedino was an unusual dish. Tasty. But for some reason while the serving was hot, the sauce was cold. Must be a southern Italy thing. My dish, Linguini Pesce was outstanding. A large portion with plenty of shrimp and clam chunks that were nice & chewy. I had it made with marina. I have been to the Hill all my life, had family originally from there but for some reason I have never been to Gian-Tony's. We went recently to try it out. Overall we will definitely go back soon but to be honest some highs & lows with first experience. Highs: Easily made online reservation. Eggplant App was great. Tortellini was excellent and Con broccoli was good but not the greatest. We liked the atmosphere & liked Tony made his rounds talking to the tables! Lows: Service was friendly but not the greatest. First the host walked right past us and gave away our table then our waiter was nowhere to be found majority of the time. Bread tasted like it was just taken out of the freezer and not fresh whatsoever. We will be back sometime soon for round two because every item on the menu sounds amazing. When you eat at The Hill you just expect 5 stars from taste, service and atmosphere and unfortunately our first visit didn't check all three of those boxes but still great place for dinner!! Had seafood risotto (huge portion, loaded with clams and shrimp), Italian salad, white wine sangria, and an espresso martini (that I was admit, kept me up until 430am, SOS!). The people who work there are family! Each one will do his/her/their professional best to be certain you have a great dining experience. See a menu item that's almost exactly what you wished for?... want to add or change just one thing?... just ask- If they can, they definitely will! The wine list is extensive, the bar is well stocked, and you won't be disappointed there. My personal favorites are the Arabriata pasta and the Filet with mushrooms white wine and mozzarella! I never miss the opportunity for the Gian-Tony's salad (but without the onion, for me). My husband chooses the Mozzarella Bufala every time. This is where we take out-of-town guests! This is also where we go when there's something to celebrate, or it's been a rough day, or we just want a great meal with no surprises, or maybe we just miss the ambiance, or we 'don't want to get all dressed up' for fabulous tastes! It's a destination and a neighborhood place; all are welcomed (and appreciated). You'll feel that. The meat sauce (as on the toasted ravioli (yum) is the best! First off, about the ambience. I really liked how the restaurant is set up. It is not a wide open space, that can get too loud. There were probably 10 tables, with a single aisle in between. Everyone was talking, and every table was full, but we could still hear each other talking at our table without raising our voices. Very important. Now for the food. First, they make smaller loaves than...say Cunetto's, but they slice them thicker so that's good. The butter isn't frozen (again, Cunetto's), so that's a win for everyone. Moving to apps - the toasted ravioli is amazing. Sorta small, 2-biters. 8 to an order. The marinara sauce is SO good, deep rich in color. The crab cakes were really good, too, sitting in a creamy orange sauce. The salads were just ok. The Caesar had too much dressing, so tell them them light dressing. The House had lettuce that need more rough chop. I had to fold over AND cut it in half. I got the Chicken Romana was simply insanely awesome. Tender, the sauce was dope. Everything about it was amazing. We also tried the fettuccine, with chicken and prosciutto added. They're cream sauce is so decadent, and creamy. It was wonderful. It was not dried out and to thick, but also not too thin. Cunetto's has the propensity to make their cream sauce a little too thick. This was much better. The atmosphere at gian Tony's is cozy with a business casual vibe. Good place for a low key quiet dinner. Their hostess was awesome! Never seen someone so attentive and guiniely concerned with her customers. The Italian wedding soup is amazing! So many flavors and was rich with maybe some egg yolk mixed in. Instead of rice or barley, it had saffron risotto as the base. More brothy and rich than other places. My wife said the casear salad was just ok. Didn't have that typical tangy punch and was more of a mayo flavor. Their house chianti was pretty good too. The 1/2 carafe is a good size for 2 people and dinner. Unfortunately the cannelloni was awful. It was sour tasting and the bechamel sauce was gritty and a weird consistency. The meat sauce isn't that great and pretty plane. On my wife's side pasta the meat sauce was super watery. The chicken parm was ok. The marinara sauce is pretty tasty and super watery too. The chicken itself is just average. read more

We had a wonderful dinner for 18 people at Gian Tony's . I had originally requested a private room, but it wasn't in my reservation. The staff went out of their way to make sure we had a comparable location in restaurant for our large party. The hostesses were friendly, Rosa the bartender, did a great job making our cocktails. We were very impressed with Michael our waiter. He was friendly, attentive, and made sure we knew about the specials. He went out of his way to make sure that my parents, who are hard of hearing, were able to hear what he was saying. Our food came out in a very timely manner. Especially given our large party, as well as 2 other large parties that were in the restaurant at the same time. All the entrees were very good! I usually like going to Gian-Tony's--sitting at the bar after work, grabbing a drink and a hot meal. Tonight I ordered pickup instead, and it was a disaster. I got toasted ravioli, seafood ravioli, and chicken spiedini with a peppercorn cream sauce swap (extra charge--fine). The woman taking the order was clearly new, didn't know the sides or sauces, had to ask--but she was nice, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. What I got? Bland cream sauce, no peppercorn, no flavor. Not even close to what I asked for. Then it got worse--they gave me the wrong pasta entirely. I ordered seafood ravioli and got scallop pasta. I called. The guy gave me attitude immediately. No apology--just "I looked at the receipt, you're wrong." After enough back and forth, he finally agreed to remake it, then called it beef ravioli. Second person now who couldn't even name what I ordered. I pick it up, come home, reheat my chicken, and find a ripped piece of plastic in my mouth. I called again, and the first thing out of his mouth was, "What do you want me to do?" I had to lay it out--apologize, remake the food, and comp the meal. He came back with "the chef apologizes," like he couldn't even say it himself. Then had to go ask permission to comp it. Three trips, two hours wasted, cold food every time--and not one real apology. Then I find out they're now refusing to reimburse anything. When I called back to ask why they were backtracking on what they already said over the phone, the response I got was: "Gian-Tony will not be calling you on a personal cell," and apparently, they now consider a comped tiramisu enough to fix the whole thing. Absolutely not. Don't lie to your customers, don't flip the story, and don't make people chase you down for basic decency. Gian-Tony's is being sold anyway, and good--because the way this place is being run now is embarrassing. read more

Wow what can I say! My mother and I had dinner here recently for my birthday. I had the seafood ravioli and mother had the primavera pasta, which she enjoyed and took half of it home for leftovers. We split the crème brûlée which was divine. Our server Michael, was pleasant and attentive. The rest of the staff checked in on us too. Let me just say first of all, we were just thankful they were open on a Sunday and without reservations. The food was good. It was very again very busy for a Sunday night. The restaurant was warm. The Décor is nice. But they were as in many cases in restaurants these days understaffed, and I felt bad for our server, who did an impeccable job running around, like a chicken with his head cut off.
