They do not serve food. As an out of towner, you are not necessarily welcome there. As for a Honky Tonk, yes it is

Live music every night of the week!! How cool is that! This place was definitely a find! I went in here with my parents when they were in town. We were next door eating dinner at Texican Cafe and my dad noticed this interesting place that he had to check out. He was driving so we did! I would call Giddy Ups a saloon that is a little on the divey side. They have a small stage inside that has live music scheduled every day of the week. There is a nice outdoor covered patio with plenty of seating, shuffle board, washers and great conversation. The back patio area looks out over a pasture where you can enjoy the beautiful sunset. The bartender working was super nice and the beer was cold! The music was groovy - you really can't ask much more from a your local saloon!

There was a time back in the old days in South Austin where you could just have a cold beer, meet your friends and talk shit. Oh SNAP, it's here at Giddy-up. Leave your LA attitude, hipster chic, designer cocktail bullshit at the door and have some fun.

What a great local place to have a couple of beers or bourbons. They had some winter warmer drinks that were on the menu now, and the prices were great. I went three times during my four day trip to Austin. Live music on two of the nights. A separate area for smoking, a food truck outside, and lively folks inside. Made for a good way to top of the evening.

I walked into this little gem of equal parts dive and neighborhood bar as well as concert venue over a decade ago and you may still find me there occasionally even though I live about 100 miles away in a small ghost town by now. With a history of over 65 years and doing business as Giddy Ups for over 20 years this is the last place in South Austin, where you may actually find true South Austinites, a special breed of down to earth folks, common people who have not yet been gentrified by the millennials and other new arrivals in this constantly growing town; simply people who still "refuse" to go North of the river. Originally a beer, wine and setup (you brought your own liquor) place, the bar has now be transformed into a full liquor bar, with top shelf whiskeys and other libations to make a stiff drink and still offering (now a bigger) variety of cold beer at reasonable prices. And in spite of some of the changes over the years, Giddy Ups has not lost any of its charms. Shuffleboard tourneys are still held on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and even so very competitive, some of the masters of the board are more than willing to teach newcomers the science of sliding pucks and hangers. It's greatest asset is probably the big family sized "living room" as the owner loves to call it, the inside barroom with it's smallest big stage south of the river. And as Austin has a rich history in music so does Giddy Ups; I've seen anything from Punk, Jazz, Bluegrass and Rock'n'Roll to Blues and Country with a big emphasis on the latter. From bands that are just starting out to Grammy Award winners, this is a little piece of original honky tonk heaven that still exists in Austin or better in South Austin. With its weekly Open Mic (benefiting the local Blue Santa program) the bar also tries to encourage young bands and artists to get their stage experiences. There is more than one act that started there cutting their chops to now being in the big limelight with a national release under their belt. You never know who may walk into the bar, but you better walk into this bar to know this little place.

Out of focus shot...oddly appropriate being that it's a shot of Ted strummin' the guitar with an empty bottle of whiskey :)

Bright and sunny, wide open with lots of natural light, tasteful hanging planters, and minimalist decor, there's nowhere to hide. It's a place to see and be seen, but not nearly as pretentious as that sounds. They just care about the details and it shows, including the attentive service and well balanced drinks. Though I feel like I should crawl back into the dark, dank dive bars that I know best, it's a gorgeous breath of fresh air for those good hair days. Generous parking lot, easy off the highway, good evening hours. The only thing I'll knock it for is being so far south! Anyone in the neighborhood has better treasure this place, since I won't be able to get out there that often.

This entire place feels like a cash grab following the mezcal trend. It's positioned as being a tequila/mezcal spot but their drinks are more basic than cocktails I can order at the airport. When I asked questions about the mezcal they use and offer the bartenders replies were always dealt with either annoyance and limited info or just an "I don't know." Plus it's $$$ you tip on top of the tip they already add but say nothing about? The basic cocktails that are known as Mexican street vendor drinks (not supposed to be $$$) can cost you over $20 alone! Then to be shady about tipping ... cash grab without a good experience. The there's the atmosphere... very limited parking shared with MANY other more busy bars, super loud inside because of no soft surfaces, and the worst part of all... the bench seats are built just tall enough that unless you're super tall, you'll have to sit at the edge of the bench and actively practice good posture. This more than the other things makes me want to leave immediately. You designed a bar to be pretty but in no way functional to its use. It's been a while since my last visit and honestly I chalked all this up to Austin's trend chasing entrepreneurs typical disconnected launch until I had AMAZING cocktails at another new spot that truly impressed with their same priced cocktails that were far far more intricate and creative PLUS they didn't try to con me out of more tip AND their space was warm, and inviting with truly exceptional customer service. That experience reminded me that inflation isn't the only thing making life more expensive ... it's also businesses delivering far less value than promised and demanding we are supremely grateful for their limited effort. If you don't want to leave the neighborhood but you still want a somewhat decent margarita .... it ain't here. Pay half the price at Bodhi's in the same parking lot.

Many yelpers really like coming here but the common complaints are the fact that the steaks are too salty and service issues. There's about 20 business owner responses but nothing in the last four years and the very first person who reviewed this place 14 years ago actually put this place in perspective. I was surprised how few photos there were, so I'll add my 10. I came here with a group of 20 people for lunch and they put several tables together for us because they do not have a private dining room. I recommend sitting in one of their many booths as their chairs were not very comfortable. We started with the brisket queso and chips, which weregood, but you get no salsa and just a very small helping of pico. When you order your main course, you're only entitled to one free side as opposed to two sides that you would get at the Road House. With that said, the salads were fresh and they kept the hot bread coming. My steak came out well seasoned, not salty and the steamed asparagus was perfectly al dente. My bone in ribeye was equal to anything Road House could make and for this price you're not gonna get prime. Everyone else's entrées met their expectations and drinks were always full. Almost all of us were too full for any dessert. Service was absolutely on point and it's definitely a steak joint I'd come back to. Plenty of parking also.
