This place is pure Texas gold - plain and simple. A friend of mine and I went to Giddy Ups during SXSW in March 2013 to check out one of the music showcases being held there on a Thursday night. The bar has a small indoor stage with a few tables and a small dance floor. The bar in the back will give you quick service and they had plenty of ice cold Shinerbock available. There is also a covered patio area with a couple of pool tables. The service was very friendly and the patrons on this particular night were a good mix of young and old, preppy and blue collar. It's off the beaten path, away from the downtown Austin scene, and definitely worth checking out when you're in town. read more

I had the same experience that Britton G had commenting on 4/4/2010. I moved at the time to a subdivision right around the corner and was really excited to have a bar within reasonable walking distance from my house. Well, like Britton G said, it was shack of angry old people. I tried a few times, going in sober and respectfully with a smile on my face, and was never treated well, was ignored by everyone with a very "get the F out" kind of energy. One time as I left I even heard a mutter from someone behind me "Don't bother coming back". After about 3 tries I gave up. Screw giddy ups. read more

Had a blast here! Yes, kind of divey. OUR KIND OF PLACE. Ostentatious is not us. The bar tender, Papper (?) was so sweet. Gave us a couple of bumper stickers (we are visiting from out of town). People were friendly and karaoke guy was GREAT. All ages there having fun dancing and singing. Reasonable drink prices. And the bathrooms were clean...not sure what that complaint was about. I don't mean to brag, yes I do, but I have this new friend and I think she's just the bees knees. She has this other friend, who I think I can call my newest friend, who is pretty groovy. So groovy, in fact, that she demanded to lead us on a Wednesday night South Austin Pub Crawl. Don't judge, Wednesday is hump day. Later on in the night it became Thursday, so it's like we were out on a Thursday. Anyway. Our first stop was Giddy-Ups. Holy hell, this place is freaking awesome. My handsome and adorable and sometimes funny fiance likes to say that people in New England are grouchy, and mean, and stuck up snobs. Yelp, this is just not true. This is an urban legend. A lie. Something to get you to not visit us up there because it's crowded enough and we don't want more Austin-like traffic. There's a point to all of this, the point is, Giddy-Ups is like walking into one of our small Vermont town bars. The old people are sitting down, or leaning on the bar, updating the bartender on something that happened that day while she was at work. And the younger people are sitting outside. And there's that one lady who is dancing, all by herself, right in front of guy on the mic. And you have to share the bathroom with another lady, and there is a lock but you're not supposed to use it because that's rude. Wait, what? Oh yea. Don't use the lock. In the future, when I go back here, I'm going to have to pee outside, or wet my pants, I just can't do the bathroom-share thing. It freaks me out. Oh god, what am going to do in my wedding dress?! I think my favorite part was walking in and seeing the look on the bartender's face. She was obviously thinking whothehellareyou and whadoyouwant. She probably enjoyed the look of sheer terror on my face when I squeaked "erm, Bud Light!" It was pretty magnificent to watch her change because by the end of our visit, she was coming around and smiling and joking and I guess this means you've become one of the crowd, your initiation is over. A hidden gem of a place and I'm excited to head back and hang out in the garage again. I hang out in my garage a lot. Usually with my dog and a good book. Now I can hang out in a garage with a beer and my excellent friends. read more

Don't listen to the negative reviewers down below, Giddy-Ups is a great South Austin dive bar with unpretentious, friendly, down-to-earth folks. It's a beer joint & smoking is allowed, so come prepared. They have a great shuffleboard, a terrific juke-box, and there's usually some fun local music performing on the small stage. If the music & smoking aint' right for you, step outside on the patio and enjoy the fresh air. I wish there were more places like Giddy-Ups in Austin, but at least we still have this one spot. read more

Full disclosure, I have not been here yet. But based on the reviews from the "youngsters" saying this is a club full of old angry people, I am sold! I am myself an angry old person, and I dislike going to the trendy country bars where the 20-somethings pose and strut looking for their nightly hookup. I prefer a bar with an older clientele, because that's where you find the true dancers, the people who know what they are doing and don't need dance lessons because they grew up learning to dance from their moms. Yes, there is a market for people like me, the old angry people. The people who aren't here for a hookup. The people who aren't throwing back shots of God knows what until we puke. The people who want to enjoy a night out and maybe meet up with someone of like age who REALLY knows how to dance and not have to be trampled by the stray legs of the Urban Cowboys who put a hat on once every six months and pretend to be country. Every time I've been in here its been late and I've already been pretty trashed. Nice little dive bar to end the night before heading home. The bartender is always friendly and the beer is cheap. Normally we'll attempt to play shuffleboard, but the skills are often lacking. WHAT AN AWESOME transformation! The newly decorated bar area looks great, NANCY! I love the Mesquite tree bar. You must ask them the history or the wood. It is an ALL natural, handmade bar from "1" Native Mesquite tree. Drink prices were not readily available the first day of operation..BUT we will be back. Still the friendly, polite gentlemen patrons. Did not get to know any ladies while there. They seemed to have their own little group of friends. ALL said and done. It's a nice little dive bar pretty well sums it up. It's definitely more of a "where everyone knows your name," type place than a "pick up a hot date" place, and that was part of its appeal for me. As a previous poster had noted, the only downside is that you have to be okay with people smoking around you. Giddy-Ups is the best. How can you not like it. From the half blind poodle behind the bar to the nasty bathroom in the back. If these things aren't for you, you're in the wrong spot. Giddy-Ups is not a place with an authentic "feel," it is authentic. I doubt it has changed much since it opened some 30 years ago. It's small but they book quality bands and dancing is welcomed. The crowd is older but young folks come in from time to time too. The reason they only get four stars is not the rough around the edges atmosphere, I love that about the place. Its the simple fact they only serve beer. I stand corrected, they do serve wine and you can bring your own bottle of liquor. Upgraded to five stars. Sorry Nancy. Its a great place to hang out with friends and relax. Karaoke on Sunday's is a blast.

My boyfriend and I went to this place on the suggestion of a neighbor of his who grew up in the this area and so we were intrigued. We went on a Tuesday night which is DJ night but usually other nights they have a live band. The ages were mixed and they had a shuffle board table style thing going on. They also have billiards available that are in a different area with doors that can close off from the rest of the bar. The beers are cheap and it's also a BYOB providing set ups kinda place. Since it's out of the city limits, smoking is allowed inside. The bartender gave us some info flyers on the place and was very friendly. They don't have a wait staff so you just go to the bar to order a drink. They were playing classic rock and other old stuff but not hard core country. There was a little dog greeting people at the door when they came in. Never did figure out whose dog it was but added to the character of the place. You can tell it's old and has some history by all the pictures on the walls and old neon beer signs. It's like the Broken Spoke but not the country vibe. Anyway, we've been back since and went on a night with some friends to watch a band from Scotland which were a lot of fun. They had a bagpipe and sort of a country sound and had us doing some group dance that was hilariously fun. I'm not into country dancing or music and this was so different. If you go and just let yourself go for cheap beer and an open mind you'll have fun. It's the kind of place that older people and younger people can go and all coexist in a southwest Florida kinda way. We'll be back. It's a nice neighborhood bar to hang out. read more

Best neighborhood crowd. The best karaoke, period! Papper is behind the bar, and is the coolest and friendliest you'll find. She runs her but off, but never fails to check in and chat. Big John runs karaoke on Sunday nights. He has anything you could want to sing, and if he doesn't have it, he'll get it. He has even bought songs online for me during the show. He can definitely sing his ass off too! He can seriously sing anything you ask him to, sing with you, or help you...but he NEVER upstages his singers. That's why his crowd is so loyal. An amazing and fun group of regulars. They are like a big family, but they'll welcome you in. There are people from every walk of life and style, but I've yet to see anyone walk in and be ridiculed or left out. This really is a dive bar, but I'm the best possible way. Great place!!! Our Austin trip would not have been the same without it! We walked in and were first met with big smiles and the sounds of true talent from Big John, the karaoke man! Beer and wine at the bar and bring your own liquor (they have the mixers) was awesome! Games galore! Amazing shuffle board. But don't let Willy and Brad tell you they aren't any good, they are pro shuffle board players and get better with beer! I had high hopes for this place when I was living down in Austin because I lived within walking distance. However, if you are below the age of 45, forget about it. On paper Giddy Ups looks like it could be a way cool place but in reality is loaded with angry old people. I had the same experience as Britton G. I tried going in a few times but the crowd was rude, dismissive, and very hostile to me being there. As a matter of fact, the last time I walked out of there I heard a guy yell, "And don't come back!" It may have something to do with Manchaca/S. Austin people from back in the day feeling threatened of new punks moving in, who knows, but doesn't make for a fun vibe. read more
