BEST BURGER IN REDDING... MAYBE THE BEST BURGER EVER Whenever I am in Redding, I make it a point to stop here at least once for a burger. The burgers, the demographic who eats here, the wall decor, and the mild to moderate disrespect and attitude from Dick hasn't changed a bit... and I wouldn't have it any other way. He is a small breath of fresh air when it comes to community and giving back to small business. He gets his meat fresh every single morning... literally fresh, NEVER frozen. He patties and cooks it right there in front of you over an open flame. The burger comes plain with cheese, which you will need to take back to the "Sandwich Bar" where you will put on all of your sauces and condiments. Why is it called the ugly burger? Because the guy cooking the burger is damn ugly! And also the burger is shaped awkwardly long, but fits perfectly in the hoagie bun. It's one of the most fresh burgers I have ever eaten. Ugh I hate to start this way but after reading the reviews, I was surprised. This was hands down the worst burger I've ever had. Thin, no flavor, I asked for medium well and she wrote it down but it was not medium well. The bun is just a regular hoagie bun, not toasted, soft. Tasted fine. The toppings bar has a variety on it but there were a couple flies flying around it and landing on things so we chose carefully, hopefully below where they landed. The vibe of the place is casual and interesting...I took a few pictures. I wish I could have walked around and seen more but there were other people around and I didn't want to intrude. The woman who took our orders and brought out our food was very nice. So was the older gentleman (Dick? Owner?) cooking. We definitely won't be back. Both of us got the ugly burger and I got a chicken sandwich to go for Randy and it wasn't good either. read more

An institution packed with trash talk and good food. Give the cook a hard time and he might just like you. Hey I said might! If you're soft, yella, or some kind of anti American weirdo, just go to Whole Foods instead. Or wherever it is that you go. Nah just kidding, I actually like Whole Foods. An odd little place with an owner that apparently opens and cooks when he's in the mood. It wasn't extraordinary by any means. It got the lunch job done but the atmosphere should be experienced by anyone interested in exploring local dives. From the "behind the curtain" ordering protocol to the memorabilia on the walls and shelves, it's a place without comparison. Great place to go while driving up hwy 5. Burger and bun was shaped more like a hot dog. Burger was very flavorful. The fixins bar was really cool and unusual. Anything you could ever want on a burger was there - different sauces, peppers, onions, etc. Seriously, this is by far the best burger "bar" and it's not even close. The fries were really good. Crisp on the outside, etc. and it's up to you to decide the saltiness because that's part of the burger bar. If you like people who do not express their views, you should go to some basic drive through with no opinions and no personality - consider yourself warned. My husband lives Giffs. It's a fun concept where you order your burger and they make it in front of you on a open grill. Then you add whatever condiments you want from the big condiment bar (big like a salad bar). There is old school booths and real sugar coke in a glass bottle. The waitress was extremely rude and unprofessional. We could hear her call my Mother-in-law a "stupid lady" to the chefs. My Mother-in-law ordered burgers for herself, me, my wife, my kids, and my Father-in-law. The waitress never gave her a receipt. The waitress that took the order brought out everyone's burgers except for my Mother-in-law's burger. After a while my Mother-in-law politely asked if her burger was coming out soon. The waitress told her that she never ordered another burger. My Wife, who was there when my Mother-in-law ordered, let the waitress know that my Mother-in-law definitely ordered herself a burger. The waitress then made my Mother-in-law pay for another burger even though she had already paid (unfortunately she paid cash). When the waitress went back to talk to the chefs we all could hear her say "the stupid lady out there said she ordered a burger when she didnt". The chefs are rude to you as part of the theme and that that was fine and funny because they are jokingly being rude to your face. It's a totally different situation when the waitress is nice to your face and rude behind your back. We will never go back there and I'll be telling all of my friends to avoid Giff's. read more

I believe that the people who rated this place are smoking tons of weed. The two of us had a single burger, double burger, fries, mushrooms and onion rings with a bill of $40. The burgers were way overcooked and tasted like old reheated meat. I would have to say it was the worst burger I have ever eaten in my 60 years of living. The fries, shrooms and onion rings were soggy and disgusting, fried in dirty old oil. The condiment station was out in the open and looked like a petri dish growing bacteria from science class in 1970. I should have left when I read that the burger is named " the ugly burger" it not only describes the looks of it, but the taste as well. The first time I ate here, I had an amazing experience. The owner was very friendly and I love my burger(ugly burger) The second time I went back expecting the same experience so I brought my family, so they could experience it too! The lady who rang us up was friendly to everyone but my step dad( who is black) I don't know if it was just a coincidence but I felt like she was extremely racist, and I wasn't the only one who thought so either. I'm very sad to have to write this review but I will never be going back because of how uncomfortable my family felt being there :( read more
