There are only a few chinese bakeries in Bay Ridge and Gigi's is the best of the bunch. The base of their baked buns are soft and moist and from there, any bun is going to be good. Fluffy and tasty, but the filling was a bit underwhelming, had to take several bites to even find it (photo proof!). Cakes looked beautiful though, so I'll be back for those. Staff always friendly and fast can you out the door quick. There's two tables and seating. Sometimes customers will be sitting there taking up the tables not buying or eating and that's unfortunate. I've never experienced a bad Chinese bakery until I frequented Gigi's recently. This is not a traditional Chinese bakery; it's highly catered to unknowing non-Chinese and it shows. I made the mistake of coming here to bring home some lunch to the family, and I should've minded my own business and kept walking. I ordered three rice rolls - shrimp, beef, and pork. The shrimp roll was very fishy tasting, and there was more rice roll than any kind of filling. It was just not tasty at all. I also purchased a fried chicken sandwich and it wasn't fresh. The lettuce and tomato were soggy, which led me to believe it wasn't made recently for the day. The only saving grace from this place was the overpriced dumplings. It was stuffed with filling, but I wouldn't run back here for anything. There's seating very limited in the front, and there's very little foot traffic for the very busy avenue. Go to Chinatown for real Chinese bakery food - stuff that's actually worth the calories; not here. read more

We pass by Gigi's Bakery often on our morning walks with the kids on weekends. Not sure why it took us so long to check out this spot. My husband made a detour on the way home this morning and wanted to check out the drinks here. We initially got 2 large brown sugar bubble teas to go and ended up getting various buns to bring home to our kids. On the car ride home, we scarfed down two buns and they were so good, soft and fresh. In our total order of baked goods, we got a shredded pork bun, a coconut custard, a pineapple bun and 3 hot dogs. The brown sugar bubble tea is REALLY good! I'm not always a fan of the tapioca pearls but the ones from Gigi's are soft with the perfect amount of chewy. I haven't actually visited the bakery in person but my sister has bought us some buns from here and both times, they were amazing. I'm sure it's probably because of all the extra butter they layer in there, but I try not to think about it. I've tried the cha siu bao, hot dog bun, scallion bun, and my newly discovered favorite - the ham and cheese bun. She said that each bun is probably about 25 to 50 cents more than a regular Chinese bakery, but the quality is so much better. You really do pay for what you get in this situation. Can't wait to go in person so I can eat with my eyes and probably end up buying more buns than I can actually eat. read more

Poor customer service experience. I ordered what I believed to be a traditional Chinese fruit cake. I was disappointed when I realized that there were only a few small pieces of fruit inside. When I went back to the store to inquire, I was told only one layer was supposed to have fruit. For the price paid there was little fruit, and the fruit on top were not in good condition. I showed the man behind the counter the pictures (attached.) The guy stated that he would talk to the chef. I was not expecting a refund, perhaps a consolidation bun, or at least an apology on behalf of the store. Instead he told me that no other customers ever complained about their cake and that if their quality did not meet my standards that I can go buy a cake elsewhere :( read more

With a few improvements I would give them 4 stars. This is a good addition to the neighborhood as there is a need for more small cafe/ bakeries in the area. I gave them 3 stars as I compared them to other Asian bakeries in Chinatown in Manhattan, Eighth and 18 Avenue in Brooklyn. Pros- the store is very clean, new, well displayed has seating for a quick bite and a fairly decent selection. Some prices are very in expensive for their small pastries such as the Portuguese egg tart for only $1.25 each. They were awesome and rivaled the bakeries in Newark and Harrison New Jersey. The staff was friendly and I believe one of the owners stepped in when I placed my order. Cons- $10 minimum on credit cards, not something I would start off with for a new business. Establish your base first then set some guidelines. Some of the prices I found high for an Asian bakery. Some pastries were $4 or more which when you try them such as the double chocolate cake do not have much size or weight to it like Italian bakeries. Communication- there were a few employees helping customers that either did not understand or speak English well. This can hurt a business as I read in other reviews that if you purchase 5 of the Portuguese Egg tarts you get the sixth one free. This was not offered to me, I would have bought the five. The chocolate cake for $2 was a good value although it tasted very salty, almost like I was eating butter off the fork. I purchased a few different items to take out and did not taste everything yet so I will do an update once I try them. All it all it was ok, I was expecting that all the products would be of a higher quality and have better portions for some of their products. Awesome coconut bread that we used to make sandwiches. Sort of like the King's Hawaiian bread but even better. I enjoyed the egg tarts. Regular and Portuguese. I prefer the regular egg tarts. The Portuguese egg tart is too dense. The regular egg tart has a bounce and eggy taste. The Japanese Cheesecake is also great: has a nice bounce to it, more like a moist cake than cheesecake. This upscale modern Chinese bakery has been a godsend for ever since I moved away from my mini Chinatown and to the Bay Ridge Area. It's convenient location means I can take a quick walk over from the R train 86 st stop. They have all the usual items a Chinese bakery has and even some American ones like almond croissant or apple turnover. I don't have photos of everything I bought but I can assure you everything sold here looks nicely prepared and clean. The store itself is immaculate!! Whoever runs it sure runs a tight ship. I've had a few items so far and all of them have been great except the drinks. Both the coffee and the milk tea were a step below what I usually get from the Chinese bakery. Somehow the flavors were muted, like they added too much water to fill up the cup. Things I liked: -coconut flake bun: so greasy but the bread is soft and coconut filling's sweetness makes it a treat -egg tart -Portuguese egg tart: these are as good as Lily Bloom's! Just the perfect amount of sweetness and the shell is crispy and flaky. -snow skin moon cakes: price was great for these! I got a box of 4 for $30. However the skin was off. It didn't have the slightly chewy, bouncy skin. Instead it tasted mushy. The fillings were delicious though! I loved the matcha, mango, durian, and pineapple fillings. I also loved how they came with a gift tin since they were a gift I brought over to my family. Gigi's a great spot to grab a quick spot or breakfast! Blown Away. Saw comments online that this bakery has better egg custard tarts then an old school place on 8th Ave. totally lived up to the hype. Got the Portuguese style, very creamy and perfectly flaky crust, flavors were wonderful, These were the size I expected. The buns were huge. Both roast pork and shredded pork, super super soft bread: like a cloud that floated down from the sky and picked up succulent pork. My My My. The sesame balls were also big, we liked the big balls- super super super chewy perfect texture you would not believe until you try it- red bean was not sweet as I expected but still totally worth it, Raisin bun extremely soft, stuffed with many raisin- they really made this so nice. Stayed fresh longer then expected- I had forgotten about it. The lemon roll? Wow. That was really great. Very nice lemony custard/jelly and the outside of the cake had a little blueberry preserve design with large pieces of blueberry, most excellent. The coffee almond croissant was more coffee than almond, did not really get much almond flavor from this, strongly led with coffee flavor - has a coffee strudel swirl inside. Delicious. We Frozen some buns and sesame balls, the pork buns heat up better then the sesame balls so far. Everything we ordered we loved, that's not typical. It's been a long time since I've had Chinese bakery goods, because most of them in my neighborhood have been closed for months. This was truly a TREAT. I placed my order via Instagram DM, they confirmed my order and I sent my payment via Venmo. They DMed me the day before to assign my time slot and they texted when they were 5 minutes away. Driver was very responsive via text and drop off was seamless. Everything arrived and tasted great. Super fresh. Portuguese egg tarts were bomb. Prices were very reasonable as well. Really glad that they had portugese egg tarts because I was starting to miss them since all the bakeries around my area were closed. They tasted decent, but the egg part inside had a bubbly consistency instead of the usual smooth egg pudding like texture. Also, these portugese egg tarts were made with a plain pastry crust instead of puff pastry. Portugese egg tarts gotta have a puff pastry crust! Also tried the cake with chestnut filling. The cake was enjoyable for the whole family because it wasn't overly sweet. It was overall super light and spongey so it was very easy to eat especially after a full meal. I had my eye on Gigi's Bakery since it appeared on Yelp and finally took a trek out. It's sort of out of the way for me in that I don't anywhere that would have me pass by this area. It's in the depths of Bay Ridge. There was construction going on in the block and the parking situation was not good. So I had my friend run in and grab a Po Tot and Green Tea Roll. My standard for great Po Tot is XinFa / Lily Bloom's. So, in comparison I would say I like the flavor of this slightly more. The crust is light and flaky and the eggy part is similar to Xinfa's but less sweet. So if you like really sweet, you might complain it's not sweet enough, but for me it perfect. The only minus is that since they don't get the foot traffic as XinFa, the tart was not piping hot, but only warm. I guess on the plus side, they don't have the foot traffic and the tarts will be available. The Green tea roll is a bit too sweet for me with not enough green tea taste. I think this place is needed in that neighborhood, and I hope they do well. I would like to try their boba tea next time since I read the bob was soft and sweet. read more

Verdict: it's an absolutely gem in Bay Ridge. It's close to the train station, beautifully decorated, friendliest staffs EVER, and the best damn PO TATS (Portuguese egg tart). What more can you ask for? Conveniently located next to the train station for instant access to coffee and baos (bread) before work. Not only are these drinks, cakes, and baos inexpensive, but they are DELICIOUS! You can taste the love and hard work that was placed into these recipes. You literally cannot find the same with other Chinese bakeries. The fun aspect about Gigi's bakery is the modern decorations and fixtures. It gives a traditional Chinese bakery a new and fresh twist without taking away the traditional aspect. Baos are more modernized as well but the taste is still authentic - which I gives Gigi's so much props to because that seems really hard to achieve! There's a wide variety of everything which makes me so happy. Some of the baos look so pretty (such as the shredded pork roll omg - take my life. It's so damn good as well) and they are basically telling me to buy and eat them. I'm absolutely OBSESSED with this place. Lastly - their drinks ugh. So good. If you like Yaya's "Boyfriend" drink, then you're gonna love Gigi's Lychee Greentea with Lychee jelly. I swear - they literally takes the same and Gigi's version is more affordable and more convenient. Don't trust me? Go try all of the items that I mentioned above and message me if you think I'm wrong! After a few friends talked this place up, I wanted to like it but the food simply fell short of high expectations. The iced coffee with tapioca was good, less sugar as requested however the food missed the mark. The roast pork bun was lacking meat (don't let what you chewed fool you - it's just sauce distributed well in it's formation), plus the bread was room temperature even when they heated it up. Furthermore it lacked that light crispy bottom due to the thick nature of the wax paper used for their baking. Service was good in that they offer to heat things up for you but the microwave used is either inadequate or it needs to be done for 10 more seconds. From looking at it, it looked like a donated household appliance - not commercial grade. The chicken cutlet sandwich had a good amount of cucumber, tomato, lettuce, and mayo - but the piece of meat used was a "tender" (which is the small sliver of meat you pull from a breast) not a cutlet, also wasn't warm enough. I ordered a chicken sandwich (chicken cutlet, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, mayo) and an iced coffee. The chicken sandwich was fresh and cutlet was crispy. The bread was soft and fluffy. Found myself dissatisfied with a piece of chocolate cake bought for my wife. I thought to surprise her with something new she had been wanting to try. Granted, it was later in the day, and they were out of a lot of product, so more or less I could only pick from what was left. Her first bite was not one of a chocolate cake, there was mild disappointment from jump. She powered through maybe half of it before telling me she would save it for later (code word for she will never come back to it). Knowing it was destined for the trash can, I decided to partake, try some myself. It was more of a jelly like consistency versus the soft creaminess one would expect from a cake of any kind. The more I had tried, the more I disliked until I could not continue either. In the future, I will look into trying more of the savory treats they have to offer, but the chocolate cake, thumbs down. Stopped by here today and ordered myself a Portuguese tart. The place is very clean! There are a couple tables and chairs to sit and have some food with tea. Honestly, I'm not sure where all the 5 stars are coming from. I heard about a new Chinese bakery in Bay Ridge so I came to support the business. I order a medium iced coffee light on the sugar, red bean pineapple bun, and a cha siu (roast pork) bun. I respect the chef's take on some classics you would find at a Chinese Bakery. But it was disappointing. Both buns were tasteless (fillings included), definitely light on the salt, sugar, and butter for the bun portion. Coffee needs work too, coffee taste was faint. Gigi's is an awesome bakery that sells egg tarts (don tat) and other Chinese baked good staples. Other than the egg tarts, I was able to try the hot dog scallion bun, mango cake, and pineapple bun. Everything was delicious and freshly baked. The service was friendly and the place is clean with modern decor. The HK style milk tea is pretty good too although a tad sweet.
