Green Tea Red Bean Cake Roll
    Harris L.

Food: Good (3 of 5). Value: Very Good (4 of 5). Long Wong Bakery II (龍廷西餅; actually "Long Ting" -- Imperial Court Bakery) is one of several inexpensive bakeries along the Avenue U stretch of Homecrest. As with many of the other bakeries in this neighborhood, this shop seems to have a regular crowd of retired customers who hang out there for as long as the bakery is open. Long Wong seems to offer a mix of products made / baked on-premise, and brought on-site. Long Wong's prices are economical and their products are often a great value as a result, especially when compared with bakeries in Queens. Buns like the Egg Custard Bun (加映包; $1.00) are just as tasty but seem to have more filling than their more-expensive equivalents from the Fay Da Bakery chain. Similarly, Long Wong's cake roll slices, such as the Green Tea and Red Bean cake roll slice, and the Taro cake roll slice have better flavor than some bakeries in Queens. Long Wong's "Portugal Tarts" (葡式蛋撻; Chinese "Portugese-style" Egg Tarts), though quite different from patéis de nata, are fairly competent, too. And I really like the Honey Cake. However, there is a limitation to low-cost bakeries. Sometimes premium bakeries may actually offer a better deal. I would recommend Long Wong's cake roll slices if you buy one or two. But if you're looking to buy more, and can travel, premium bakeries (such as the Sunmerry Bakery chain) offer entire cake rolls with more substantial ingredients -- which makes these rolls pound-for-pound a better buy.

    Creme bun/ Hotdog bun

This Asian bakery has more varieties of cakes and buns than the other bakeries along Avenue U. Their Swiss creme rolls are always fresh and tasty. Hot dog bun wasn't the typical bun with a dog, it has ketchup and mayo sauce on top; that was a bit different. The ladies behind the counter aren't the friendliest, but it's an order and go kind of place. Also, liked their milk creme bun as well, filling was filled to the brim.

A good neighborhood bakery with some pretty tasty buns and cakes. This place is usually packed with customers and now I know why. Came in here on a whim and hit jackpot. They had a number of green tea flavored items which I had to try. I'm insane about green tea! I've never seen any place make a green tea bun. Looked almost like a pineapple bun but green. The crust on top was delicately sweet and flakey. Inside had a nice red bean filling. Quite delicious and unusual. Also bought a green tea rolled sponge cake. A bargain at $1.75. It was pretty big, enough for 3 normal sized servings. The center of it contained a small amount of sweet red bean paste and whipped cream. Light and delicious. Surprisingly this bakery also makes rice noodle rolls (cheong fun)! Similar to the rice noodle rolls that you find at dim sum restaurants. I asked the cashier for 2 orders. Surprisingly she said, "they make them fresh, in the back, but it depends upon the mood of the chef/baker on how long I will have to wait for them to be made or whether they will be made at all." Wow. Maybe this is mainly a breakfast item? I came in here at about 3pm. I should probably call and order ahead like another yelper recommended. Final note: You gotta like green tea flavor to really like these pastries. Sometimes kids/adults don't like the slight bitter flavor of green tea. When in the neighborhood, I will definitely come back here for more yummy treats.

I went to this bakery today and ordered rice noodle with pork and vegetables. They made it fresh and quick and it was so tasty.

Walking in, Vito's bakery is best described as a place you want to be locked in for the weekend. With a spoon. Everything looks deelish! Lots of choices to satisfy my afternoon craving. But I spy with my little eye a freshly made nut cake. I see the different choices of biscotti. Vito, I would have went wild in this place. Cash only?? I ask for a double espresso and a piece of nut cake. The woman behind counter asked if this was the right size cut. She weighs it and gives me the goods. This transaction is not happening in Long Island!! Vito's bakery is a true Italian bakery, the smells alone are intoxicating. Fresh breads, Italian cookies, ready made cakes in the ice box. I think I just described heaven.. My buddy is with me, he's from Texas. He doesn't know what I just experienced. He's looking at the cake I bought, I didn't share! It was really really good. (Pinkie to lip) It was picture worthy.. Come to Vito's bakery for the best Brooklyn has to offer!

I love how they have rugelachs in many flavors and biscottis as well. I'm unsure if the croissants and butter cookies are made on premises. The croissants were good but tasted generic. The rugelachs tasted a bit old the each time I had it. I thought it was a bad batch but it seems to be that way every time I get them. The last time I got them they were hard and difficult to bite into and tasted stale. They were pretty expensive too. For $14.75 per pound, no cookies should be old.

My go-to item is their flaky egg tart which is always fresh and delicious. I also love their triangular roast pork pastry but I haven't seen it as often lately but a must-try if you spot it. Each of us purchased at least $30 worth of bread and pastries, and I also spent about $20 on desserts and drinks. Our total purchase was well over $100. After sitting in the bakery for about ten minutes, one of my friends still had half of her pastry left. Unfortunately, we had already thrown away our utensils. She politely asked an employee for a plastic fork so she could finish the pastry on the way home. The employee responded in a very unfriendly manner and said that forks are not provided for takeout orders. We explained that the pastry had originally been eaten in the bakery and was simply unfinished, and that we had all purchased a large amount of food to take home. Nevertheless, she refused to provide even a single fork. What disappointed us most was not the fork itself, but the attitude. After spending more than $100, it was surprising to be denied a simple plastic fork and treated with such inflexibility and lack of courtesy. We have always enjoyed Wheatfield Bakery's products, but customer service is just as important as good food. I hope management will take this feedback seriously and remind staff that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in a customer's experience. A plastic fork costs only a few cents, but good customer service is priceless. Unfortunately, this experience left us feeling unappreciated as customers. We hope Wheatfield Bakery will review its customer service standards so that future customers are treated with greater courtesy, respect, and common sense.

Mushroom and chicken boxed rice - lots of chicken bone shards and too little pieces of Chinese sausage slices. Mixed rice noodle with fish ball - the fish ball option was something I requested for over the phone when they notified me one item that I ordered ran out. The fish ball was really tiny and on the harder side. Really not good quality fish balls. The rice noodle was not silky and smooth. The sauce was the worst part. Not enough sauce and too watered down. The flavors that's usually in the sauce were very subtle. Pork floss cheese loaf bread - the slices of bread were thick and fluffy so I was impressed. The pork floss cheese could be better. Not enough pork floss. Sounded better on paper Steamed Custard bun - it was a big bun so I excitedly ripped it apart but I found some weird charcoal color particles in the custard filling when I did that.
