Took the family to dinner here Tuesday evening, we have eaten at this location for years, something has changed, for the worse, my mother couldn't even eat her meal the red rice was disgusting, I tried it the flounder was burnt to a crisp charcoal, dried out uneatable, my she crab soup was tasteless , all meals were just off no one was happy, when we expressed our disappointment with waitress she brushed us off , I was that's it ?? I suggested Gilligan's the other night. My boyfriend and I hadn't been here in a while. We were greeted upon arrival and seated inside. During COVID, they are still serving inside, but they have about every other table marked off to keep up social distancing. We started out with the shrimp dip as an appetizer. It came with club crackers. It was good to have while we waited for our food. They brought out hush puppies around the same time. I love Gilligan's hush puppies! I ordered the shrimp and grits for dinner. They use stone ground grits with cheese and topped with shrimp and dinner sausage. I am a very picky eater but I found this to be delightful. I even ate my leftovers the next day, and that really says a lot about how good the food was because I rarely remember to eat leftovers. Unfortunately, the server even admitted to us that they do not have a great dessert menu. They have key lime pie and a couple other things, but nothing that I fancy. I want chocolate. So we had to get our dessert elsewhere. Overall, we had a good experience with Gilligan's. We almost always do. The service was on point and the food was delicious. Full service during COVID 19. I wish that I knew beforehand that I was going to end up writing a review on my meal because I would have taken a photo. It was that beautiful! I ordered a fish in a bag meal. This was such a cute mom and pop spot. I loved that it was right on the river so we sat outside. It was definitely getting hot with the sun blaring directly on us so they made sure we had an umbrella. Went in for quick lunch and not disappointed. Ordered shrimp and flounder fries coleslaw. They had malt vinegar for the fish, live it! Don't find this much anywhere. We hadn't been to Gilligan's in quite a while but went last night. They have updated the decor and also the menu. We were delighted with what we ordered - the scallops. They were good size and REAL. Some restaurants use the cheaper type that are tiny scallops ground up and molded back into a scallops shape with fibrin. All the sides were very good especially the cheesy grits. Our server, Cole was prompt with providing us with everything. We noticed the manager visiting all the guests and making sure they were satisfied. Tried this place 4-years ago and found the food to be just average. I though I would give it another try; you know chef's do come and go. The she crab soup was excellent , and that all she wrote. The fried oysters came to the table Soggy and the plate itself had so much oil that i had to wrap the oysters in a napkin and then use it to dry the plate......Did not help I called the manager and sent the oysters back..as this was not acceptable. The replacement came back a little less soggy but not the crisp FRIED TO PERFECTION as the menu clams..... Now the oil had no rancid smell but it was like when you fry food with the oil not hot enough and it absorbs the oil before the outside can crisp. I haven't been here in a number of years and took my daughter because she received a free meal for Honor roll at her elementary school. The hush puppies are always good, and the service was good, but a little slow that night. I was happy with the whole flounder I got for $20 with a salad and broccoli, but it was heavily fried. They do have an all you eat shrimp in season, fried-broiled-, which I would return for because they are local shrimp, not Asian or imported farmed shrimp. Sorry to have to drop the star rating. We came here with my parents for dinner. Our food experience was not good. My husband had the crab legs and they were terrible. Not sure what was wrong, tasted awful. The hush puppies were greasy and cold. My shrimp appetizer ( boom boom shrimp) was drenched in sauce and the shrimp wasn't even peeled, so you had to fish it out and then peel a sloppy mess of shrimp with sauce. Just not good. We also got the peel and eat shrimp, ordered it "warm", it came to our table COLD. Not happy. The dessert, cheesecake and key lime pie was the best part of the meal. Bad night for the cooks???? Gigantic portion of cheesy grits with 4 slivers/coins of sausage, 6 undercooked shrimp, and a scattering of green onion. Barely any sauce at all, no bacon/toppings etc. Our other adult had peel and eat shrimp and French fries. Again, how do you mess that up? The wait staff were also pleasant, my main complaint is with the hostess and her inept ability to 1) be at her station when we arrived 2) asked if it was ok if she sat us in the bar and then ushered us in there because the main dining room was "too busy". If you're going to seat me where YOU want, then why bother asking me if it's ok. She was unprofessional, less than pleasant and being the very first impression we encountered when we visited this establishment for the first time; I would make a change in staff positions.
