We ordered a carryout for the first time. The staff was very nice when we called to order. We were told it would be 50 minutes before the order was ready. When we arrived to pickup our order we were told it would be another 30 minutes before it would be ready. They were extremely busy and many people were waiting. The restaurant was beautiful but blocked off so you were unable to dine in. When our order was ready we headed home and opened up our carryout to piping hot food. We ordered crab ragoons, comes with 6, which were very good. The crab filling was very creamy and a little different than the usual. Sadly, our general tso chicken was hard and overcooked. The beef lo mein noodles were delicious, but there was little to no beef in the dish making it hard to even call it a beef dish. Ordered carry out 6/23/2020 First time trying this place. Order Vegetable lo mein noodles With egg roll and fried rice And pint of woton soup I was told 35 mins I showed up 37 mins After I called. My order took 55 mins. I understand it's covid and busy. So I asked did you put plum sauce in the bag for my egg roll he said yes. I get home no plum sauce. Yay sat in lobby for 25 mins and no plum sauce. Okay so I open the soup pour it in a bowl sit down to eat it. I take a sip of the broth and it's very bland almost taste like water. I go to eat a woton and I see BUG! So didn't eat that throw it down the sink. The egg roll was okay tasted more like cabbage so ugh not good. The vegetable lo mein was good but mostly tasted like butter noodles honestly. Fried rice it came with you could tell it was old. Honestly was freaked out the whole time I ate my meal. There's plenty of Chinese takeout places in the Metro Detroit area and a lot of people have recommended Gim Ling so I had to give it a try. I got the sweet and sour chicken (orange sauce rather than the typical red), general taos chicken, and crab rangoon. Overall, the chicken was juicy and tender but I thought the flavor of the sauces were lacking, kind of bland. The rice had more flavor than the chicken. Portions were pretty average in my opinion. I preferred the sweet and sour chicken more and I am a big general taos advocate and that is my go to at every restaurant. The crab rangoon was more cream cheese than crab and the dipping sauce tasted like straight vinegar. Love that I got to support a local business but will probably try a different Chinese takeout place next time. read more

Without a doubt, my favorite Chinese restaurant. I know a lot of people prefer PF Changs as a more upscale Chinese experience, but not me. Gim Ling gives you the same upscale and modern feel at a cheaper cost. Located in a busy shopping strip, Gim Ling definitely gives you a good vibe upon entering. The place itself is quite cozy, playing classical music in addition to having a nice atmosphere. This isn't your typical Chinese restaurant. Prices are a *tad* bit more than your typical Chinese restaurant. However, it is worth it. Most everything is around $9 - $12, and that's not even including the complete meal, which is a few dollars more and includes an egg roll, roll, soup, rice, and dessert. Don't let the higher price scare you aware --- the food here is delicious! Sesame chicken is my go-to meal at any Chinese restaurant. However, Gim Ling actually asks how spicy you want it, rather than saying it's spicy when it's really not (I'm looking at you, Leongs) I usually get mine "medium" and I like that it adds a bit of a kick to my meal. Not enough to make your eyes water but enough to make you happy you didn't ask for anything super spicy. The vegetables provided are onions, peas, and carrots and they actually taste fresh! Egg rolls are made here with veggies for anyone that has allergies to shrimp or any other seafood. The ice cream here is surprisingly divine as well. If you're in the St. Clair Shores area, I highly recommend dining here at least once! They're closed on Mondays, however, but have great hours otherwise. Service is great and food is even better. The best Chinese food we've found since moving to the Shores. We've tried a few others that we've seen people rave about but always end up back here. Our favorites are the young chow fried rice, sesame chicken, beef & broccoli, and Szechuan chicken. The combination plates are good size portions and the eggs rolls are so good. Minus one star because we've found that sometimes the phone just rings and rings when you call but after a few tries you can normally get through. They don't accept American Express either which always throws us off but definitely not a deal breaker. We have only ever tried them as a carry out option, never sat in the restaurant. read more

To start with, it took 1 hour and 30 minutes to get my food. And this just carry-out and they only have carry-out. They dint dine in available they keep saying it's hard to find help. That's a buch bull crap. There are alot of people looking for work. The food was ice cold when I picked it up. If they keep this up they will be out of business in no time. They haven't had Chinese dinner rolls in 3 years. They keep saying the person that makes them quit. Really? And the portions have gotten smaller. Like 2oz of meat in each dish. Horrible experience. It seems like these days it is hard to find consistently good Chinese food. When the wife mentioned that her parents went to Gim Ling for dinner one night and raved about how good it was, I will admit I was a bit hesitant. I love my in-laws to death, but every time they tell us how a place they recently ate at was phenomenal we go there and it usually ends up being average at best. We decided to go there and give the place a shot and for the most part they were on point and the food was pretty damn good. I am not a huge fan of Egg Rolls, but I could eat theirs for days. The dipping sauce which I believe is just Red Wine Vinegar and Spicy Mustard is a perfect accompaniment to go alongside them. Service wise has typically been very good. We never had any issues such as the ones listed in other reviews. Pricing is reasonable too especially if you get the dinner (it is like $2.75 extra and you get Soup, an Egg Roll, Dessert, and Tea), but there is one caveat. I wanted to try the General Tsos Chicken with Noodles in place of Rice and they obliged, but charged me $5.50 for the substitution. I expected to pay an up-charge of a couple bucks, but not that much. While I enjoyed the dish with Noodles more, it is not worth it at that price point. All in all, I would suggest giving the place a shot if you live in the area. Just be careful when it comes to substitutions and ask beforehand what the up-charge would be. read more

I've been going to this place forever and it has always been good! The chicken lo mein is super yummy. Lots of veggies and juicy chicken. My fav is the Hot and Sour soup! I eat the large all by myself! My mom loves their Shrimp and Lobster sauce. I do have to admit it's pretty dang good as well! The service is always decent and it's always clean. Overpriced, snobby staff, lukewarm food, dishes are not prepared with the correct or expected ingredients. They stopped putting bean sprouts in their egg rolls long ago--just tasteless cabbage and bland now with different wraps The vegetable fried rice was devoid of anything else but green peppers and LOTS of white onion. no other vegetables to be found but a few mushrooms--NO snow peas, no little corn cobs, no bamboo shoots, and not one water chestnut or piece of broccoli. I LITERALLY TASTE NOTHING BUT A LOT OF WHITE ONION THAT THEY USE AS LESS EXPENSIVE FILLER. Just go out of business if you can't do it right or even try. The food is always great here. I like this place because it's a step up for Chinese food. When dining in the food was always plated nicely and pleasantly presented. That's rare for Chinese food. The staff has always been friendly. I've ordered a few times during quarantine. Yes the wait has been a long time, but it's expected during dinner time. First time in... had a really good lunch with the wife and daughter. I had the sweet and sour chicken and found it to be really good - was presented well on the plate, sauce was thick, the chicken was prepared properly, rice was rice, egg roll as nothing special, but the egg drop soup was excellent. Wife had cashew chicken and she had no complaints. Daughter had general tso's chicken - she really liked it - it was served with broccoli which she doesn't like so I got to eat it and it was cooked perfectly (not to firm but not to mushy) Tea was HOT but good The decor was great - kind of surprising considering it's located in a strip center in the Shores. Our waiter Tim was cool. He seemed shocked when my compatriot ordered her Vegetable Delight spicy, indeed it was spicy, but not too hot. The Tofu was softer than we like, but was still good. Egg drop soup was thick and delicious. Wonton soup broth was tasty it didn't have that foul mop water flavor like many Chinese buffets and takeout. The fried soup crispies were light and fresh. Probably still heart cloggers, but mmm good. Soup was served with HEAVY BREAD ROLLS; nearly extinct in area chinese restaurants, these soft heavy rolls are goooood; sop some soup or just take a bite mmm. Egg rolls were solid. Better than average, and lacked the swamp water flavor of lesser rivals. I had a piece of broccoli for every piece of chicken in my General Tso's, but even beyond that good news, the sauce was the best General sauce I've had in some time. I found it actually had some heat when ordered hot and wasn't sickeningly sweet. Presentation was quite nice, better than you'd expect in a strip mall. I took pictures. It was just OK. Egg rolls were good, but I asked for hot mustard and she said it is mixed into the plum sauce. Yeah, no it wasn't. It was regular sauce, actually not quite as good as the plastic packets. Blech. Next time I guess I have to demand hot mustard. General Tso's is wrong, should be dark meat. It's Chinese food 101. I would keep driving by this place. Service was very slow, didn't bring out tea and beverage until are dinner almost arrived. Charged extra for a spring roll because my friend could not eat shrimp. Then charged us for a pint of rice and no refill on beverages. We even asked for separate bills and got one! Surprised they didn't charge us for our left over containers !!!! read more

I would like to start by saying I USED TO like their greasy, slightly decent chinese food. I go there because my vet's office is nearby and having 3 dogs and a cat i find myself there often. Service seemed friendly enough until last week. i would give this place NO STARS if i could. THIS IS A LONG STORY BUT BEAR WITH ME This was my 3rd visit there and like before I wanted to pay on my credit card. Only this time they asked me for my ID. i'm going to be honest and say i got shitfaced in chicago and left in a bar there 3-4 nights prior. when i failed to produce the manager came out and said she needed my ID. i told her i didn't what had happen to it and she asked "so your driving around with no license?" not that this was any of her business but no. My dog was having surgery so i came to get him. "theres no one you can call to have them bring you money...we need to get our money" I told her that i live and work in Detroit, that my husband and i actually own a restaurant downtown (i'm not gonna take this time to plug my place because i'm not here for that) and that i've never asked my customers for ID nor have i been asked here for an ID before. she goes on about how that's their policy and they bank requires it (i'm calling bullshit again cuz i have 2 different business accounts and neither require that) She start to get loud, so I get loud back. then she say shes gonna call the cops. I say "look, you can hold on to my phone, it's an iPhone 4...it's pretty expensive. i'll just go to the ATM, since i know my PIN, and get the money..." "yeah my daughter has an iPhone too....so what" and she walks away. At this point i'm fucking livid. OVER 23 dollars??!?!? i call my husband, who is at our restaurant and tell him whats going on. i'm loud cuz i'm pissed and i'm somewhat embarrassed. i explain the situation and as i walk outside to talk they tell me.... "ma'am can you please reamain at your table?" i said my car keys are on the table and that i wasnt going anywhere when i come back in a young kid around the age of 15 walks up with 20 bucks and asks me how much my bill was and that his dad would like to pay. i say no at first but then accept the offer tell his father the same deal. i would leave my phone and my keys with him, pay the bill, get my card (which they've held onto) and pay him right back. he refuses saying he just wants to do something nice in hopes i would return the favor, a sentiment i live by, but i insist. when i go to pay the bill they say "we thought you didnt have any money" i explain and they tell me ..... ARE YOU READY? THEY HAVE CALLED THE FUCKING COPS ON ME! not only that but they have TAKEN MY CAR KEYS OFF THE TABLE AND ARE HOLDING THOSE TILL THEY GET THERE. WOW...... JUST WOW. i have had fights break out at my bar. lots more thing have happened at my place IN DETROIT than this and i have RARELY called the cops. the cops shows up and i believe his is clearly more annoyed by this situation than i am. he asks me a few questions about myself, goes out to his car and even talk about my checkered past (hey i was young once) i ask him if i can just go to the ATM and pull the money out to pay them. He goes inside and tells them i'm going to the ATM and they say "oh we have to go get the manager to ask her" to which he responds "oh, i'm not asking you. i'm telling you" he is kind enough to drive me to the ATM which is in THE SAME PARKING LOT...watches me enter my PIN, because i want to prove to him its mine. drives me back and i pay them. so would i go back to this place? i think it's safe to say i would rather eat 3 day old McDonalds than even recommend this place. my vet nor their staff will be returning, and if i knew anyone else out in that area, rest assured they wouldn't be going there either. read more

AMAZING FOOD, terrible workers and "policies"!!! I've been going here since before I can remember with my family. It was probably my first experience with Chinese! Moving back to the area I was hoping this place would become my go-to for Chinese. I was WRONG. The first strike against them: I came with my significant other and was told we could not split food because we HAD to order a minimum per person (I believe it was $5?). What? We were spending at least $30 between the tea, soups, egg rolls, entree and the appetizer, but were still told we couldn't do it that way. After a long process with the waiter, we finally figured out what her and I could order to meet the "minimum" per person; nevermind the WHOLE price of the bill split in half would of met the min! My GF ended up ordering more egg rolls and a soup she didn't really want so she could meet the requirement. The most confusing part here is... What if I wanted to eat dinner and the person accompanying me just wanted to meet up? Would they have to order something just to sit with me in the booth? So. I still don't understand what the problem was, considering we were going to be spending a good amount of money there. THE FUNNIEST PART is that my mother comes in ALL THE TIME with her husband. They split Sweet & Sour and order extra rolls and a extra soup and NEVER HAVE A PROBLEM, though I KNOW they don't meet the strange "individual requirement" they bestowed on me and my GF. Is it because I'm 29, but have the face of a 18 year old? I really don't know, but it's degrading. If that wasn't enough, I ordered from here from work one day on a Saturday for a takeout. I ordered a lunch special (I guess? I didn't care what it was, I wanted Almond Boneless after work). I said I would be there AFTER 3pm--probably around 3:30pm. I got there at 3:15pm, earlier than I anticipated, and was met with a blank stare when I asked for my order. At first she tried to tell me I didn't have an order, but I reminded her what it contained and was told, "Oh, we put that back. It was a lunch special. No lunch special past 3pm." Despite telling them WHEN I WOULD BE THERE, they did not inform me of this. Then, to make it worse, they didn't even bother to remake my food (at the normal price, I didn't honestly care), the hostess/waitress just stared at me with no resolution to offer. Food is good and nice clean place. But service is lacking. Had four bad experiences over the last six months. They are understaffed and disorganized. took over 100 minutes to get our food and was about to cancel my order. They also don't make an effort to bring out the food together. In our last visit and a previous visit with friends, they brought out food to us such that half of our group was almost finished before the other half got there food. Well I've mentioned it in a few of my Chinese posts. So I figured I'd do my review of the place... About 7 years ago the original owners left Gim Ling. The owners sister opened her own place in Hazel Park called Red House. The took the same family recipes. Amazing... The new Gim Ling... Not so much. While it is MUCH brighter, and a much nicer place in general to eat. The food doesn't cut it. The prices are higher (like $9 for Almond Chicken?!), and the food is as good as a delivery or carry out only joint (minus red house). breading is the same too thick, undercooked crap... Bla bla... I hate even writing reviews. I suppose if this is the type of chinese you like, and you wanna spend more that the average crappy chinese joint. By all means... Firstly, before I wrote this review, I looked at some of the other review. I noticed that reviews from a few years ago were sparkling and the more recent ones are pretty bad. This matches perfectly to my boyfriend's experience; we went here because he remembered they were great before. Definitely not anymore! When we got there, no one was at the counter, and there were about 10 people waiting for to go orders. Someone finally showed up and took care of some of the to go people. My boyfriend finally spoke up and said we just wanted a table. 25 minutes in we were seated. There is no children's menu--the place is not child friendly. The guy brought us waters, and one for our child. I asked for a diet coke which he forgot about till nearly the end of the dinner. We asked for the straw twice more. Finally the lady dealing with the to go orders brought one. They also didn't bring a plate or a fork for our daughter--we had to find the lady at the front to bring us table wear. We were not checked on at all by our waiter. The food was decent. I would give that about 3 stars. I got the Szechwan chicken, and he got the General Tso's chicken. Our food arrived an hour and 20 minutes past our arrival time. While our waiter did not check on us even once, he did manage to get us out as soon as he thought we were done. He looked at my boyfriend like he was nuts when we asked for the leftovers to go. He was very arrogant on the whole, and made us feel far from welcome.
