I bought a BBQ pork sandwich and a spring roll. To be honesty, I was very disappointed at this place! $6 for a BBQ pork sandwich is way over priced, Vietnamese BBQ pork sandwich usually $3 any where else. Ok, if they want to make more money, but their BBQ pork sandwich is nasty, no taste of meat, very dry, and vegetable seem to be refrigerated over a month, taste like rubber band. Their ingredients are very low quality and cheap. They taste awful!!! They also use very CHEAP bread which are not roasted, it is ok, since this is Ann Arbor. I came from California, I have very good Vietnamese sandwich everywhere. I don't think this is authentic Vietnamese sandwich at all. BTW, I am more worry about the sanitary issue, the way they make the sandwich is very dirty, I feel nausea after eating, department of public health should check their food for public safety. The food didn't look like what's in their website. Don't be fool by place! Another thing is that, this place is very unprofessional and unorganized, they would let people jump ahead of the line, my order waited even longer than people who come order. 30min for waiting!!!!! Fantastic bahn mi sandwiches. Perfect summer rolls made to order with homemade peanut sauce. I'll definitely be back. Only issue is with the unheated 3-season room they have out front. I realize it's more of a 'stand' than a 'restaurant', but it's freakin' cold out in Ann Arbor in February and considering how much we're paying for this awesome street food, maybe they could afford a few more heaters. This is a smart little spot. All the feeling of street food, with the flavor and design I would expect from a higher end restaurant. The food is good - especially the sandwiches and the spring rolls. The Pho is ok, and to be honest, I found it a little bland. I am very impressed by the packaging design, and while I think the prices are a touch high for the portions, the flavor more than makes up for it. I just had a Pancetta Banh Mi, and a Thai Iced Tea. Both were excellent. The sandwich was full of wonderful flavor. The pancetta was plentiful and delicious. Cucumber, cilantro, shredded carrot and pickled vegetables all wonderful. Baguette fresh baked and beautiful. Thai Iced Tea also was great. Very friendly service as well. Alright. I'll start with the positives. The sandwiches are alright. The drinks are pretty good and this is the only place in Ann Arbor that serves shaved ice. The negatives are that the sandwiches are overpriced. However, basic econ 101 would tell us that since this store really has a monopoly on Vietnamese sandwiches, they shouldn't lower the price, but I digress, the sandwiches are overpriced compared to what I'm used to in Houston. The Pho here though. That's a tragedy. It's not bad, but the dainty small portion is a huge turn off, especially when Tomokun has much better pho. The portions are terrible, which has gone against all convention I've ever seen at a Pho place, which normally has quite generous portions (see Tomokun). Anyways, the Pho here might be worth 3 dollars, but 8 is a rip off. tldr; sandwiches are alright, kind of expensive. Drinks and shaved ice are pretty good. If you want pho go to tomokun. read more

The food at Ginger--judged by bang for the buck--can not be beat. They have a limited menu, but the food they prepare is invariably excellent. I've had the vegetarian Banh Mi and the vegetarian Pho: both were superlative and the total cost--for two entrees--was under $15. The service is also quite friendly--we were on a first name basis before my meal was over! Keep in mind that Ginger Deli is more of a take-out spot than a dine-in spot (it is a deli, not a restaurant, after all), though sitting at their outdoor counter would be fine when the weather is nice. So I actually haven't ever been to the deli, but they come in to Mott hospital cafeteria once a week and I've had some of the subs there. I've had both the beef and chicken sandwiches and they're both delish but I prefer the beef. It's so tender and juicy you can't waste time on things like chicken :). They're made fresh and on the spot, and don't taste greasy or heavy. The bread is just enough and not too much. I can't wait to get to the restaurant and try more off the menu! read more

I had the summer rolls and pork banh mi. The rolls were premade, which is standard, but the rice paper was tough and gummy. The ingredients were fine though -- the flavor of the mint really came through. The banh mi wasn't very good. They didn't use a rice flour baguette, so the roll wasn't shatteringly crisp like it should be. The meat was not marinated in the typical fashion and tasted Italian rather than Vietnamese. The spice came from black pepper instead of chilis. I'll be back to try the pho, but my hopes aren't high. Service was great though. read more

This is the best place in Ann Arbor, for pho! , it's authentic and delicious!! My hubby visits Vietnam twice a year and he loves this place! The Vietnamese coffee and tai tea are so delicious, you'll want 2 orders! I have had everything on the menu and it's all great. I LOVE Ginger Deli. My husband, daughter and I have carried out from there on multiple occasions since it opened. IMO, they have the best banh mi in town. Though I like the beef banh mi, pancetta is definitely my favorite. The bread is perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, exactly how it should be. The proportion of meat to veggie is just right and not too heavy for me, which is also a huge plus in my mind. Their beef pho is also equally tasty. It's packaged so nicely with a handle for you to carry on-the-go. As far as I know, no other restaurant that serves noodle soups provide such convenient packaging. Now, back to the pho... I like the flavor of the broth. In contrast to some other opinions, I don't find it too salty, especially when you add the textures of the thinly sliced and tender beef as well as the noodles, which are cooked just right. And finally, a fantastic ending to every meal is dessert. And Ginger Deli does it wonderfully with their Snow-mazing. As a person of Taiwanese descent, I'm familiar with and appreciate the deliciousness of good shaved ice. But snow ice is a whole different ballgame. It's like shaved ice, only more fine, like snow. Imagine froyo, but icier. They offer a variety of flavors, such as strawberry (my favorite), coffee (also yummy), chocolate, coconut, green tea, lemon, and mango, just to name a few. And like froyo, they also offer multiple toppings for your enjoyment, such as fruit, mochi, coconut, nuts, etc... Needless to say, it's a pretty spectacular treat, which will be awesome to enjoy throughout the summer! In case this review doesn't say it all, I highly recommend Ginger Deli. First of all I was very ecstatic to try some pho for the first time. Having grown up with many Cambodian and Vietnamese friends and trying some of their great home-cooked meals had me craving something similar here in Ann Arbor. A fellow friend and I both were eager to try and find a place that served pho. Enter "Ginger Deli". To be blunt I was pretty disappointed by the experience. The beef pho was very underwhelming and was very lacking in two ways, presentation and just the amount of quality product. There was what seemed to be barely any vegetables and a sad looking piece of lime. Like seriously? Couldn't they have thrown in a bit more product in? It would have seriously made a huge difference in presentation and just value for what you pay. Noodles were just fine and seemed to be some packaged stuff and didn't taste like anything freshly made. The broth was just "ok", nothing special, my friend who considers himself well-versed in most Asian cuisine (especially Vietnamese pho) had the same thoughts. Overall, just not what I expected to get for $8. I will return and maybe try the sandwiches as my friend had tried them and said they were pretty good. The bread served with the pho was great, sadly they skimp you on the bread as well and give you an itty-bitty piece. Like really Ginger Deli? It was laughable because when you're paying for the food you see the huge amounts of bread that are stored above on racks so I'd hardly believe they're short on bread to hand out to paying customers. A bigger portion would only make sense with the decent sized bowl of pho. This place could be so much better, but it seems like there's some major inconsistencies in service because many others are giving this place such high ratings. Either that or I actually have pretty high standards when I pay with my hard-earned cash expecting some quality food. This is just a heads up to Ginger Deli, I'm being brutally honest and if I were a restaurant/deli owner I'd expect paying customers to give me honest feedback. The funny part is that they could remedy this so easily. Bigger piece of baguette and offer up some more fresh vegetables to throw in. That's all it would have taken and I would have been a repeat customer and would have recommended the place to others. Now I just have reservations about even returning or recommending it. See what just happened there? Less worry about profit margins and more worrying about customer satisfaction and about "how are we going to get these customers coming back? How are we going to get them to recommend us to others?". There's plenty of local suppliers for vegetables, farmers markets and all that to supply great stuff! So many businesses take advantage of this and it only boosts their local reputation and offers great fresh food for locals, win-win. It's suppose to be "Asian fusion", but it is like they're not even trying. Especially as a first customer you want to be delivered something with a "wow" factor, but I just left with -$8 out of my wallet and a very mediocre experience. Luckily there's many great bars in the area to drink away the disappointment experienced. EDIT: Quick note, those little fancy recyclable utensils with the logos on them, yeah they're cute, but that's it and as others have commented just sort of goofy. They're just sort of gimmicky. But c'mon give us some chop sticks and ditch those things. You could invest in some nice chopsticks to hand out that customers can return. read more

You know, I'll be honest. I didn't want to like this place, but after four years of Ann Arbor and, quite frankly, crappy Vietnamese food, i'm glad someone found a niche in a town that desperately needed it. I ordered a chicken Banh Mi, Summer rolls, and a beef pho. Chicken banh mi: My my my, this was a good surprise. It was a little more expensive thn what i'm used to (6$), but it was wayyyyy better than any banh mi i've had on campus and it honestly reminded me of home. The bread was great and crispy, and just large enough to make me almost forget about the price. The chicken was good and tasty, and the veggies were plentiful and the right amount of sour. The summer rolls were my favorite part. Although, again, it was overpriced, they were so good and probably even better than ones I can make on my own. The sauce was super legit and each roll were filled. A must try The pho was....lacking. Severely. For 8 dollars, just go to China Gate. But anyways, the noodles were uncooked and were quite hard. The flavor was bland and needed more fish sauce, anaise star, and salt/pepper. There needed to be more beef. Overall, my appetizers were great, the main dish..not so much. Been here a couple times. The summer rolls and beef pho were decent but did not really "wow" my taste buds. Their pancetta bahn mi, however, is outstanding. Crispy French baguette filled with tender/juicy pork belly and fresh veggies/herbs - wonderful combination of flavors and texture. As a midwest college town bumpkin, this was also the first place where I tried shaved snow ice (their "trademark" name appears to be "snowmazing"). I enjoyed it quite a lot; it's much lighter/fluffier than regular ice cream, but still has a hint of creaminess that you don't get in sorbets and other desserts that are just ice + sugar/flavored syrup. read more

Today it took them 25 minutes to make a sandwich when there was no line. I would recommend going here if you would like to get some reading done and you won't be hungry for a while. I remember them taking far too long the last time I was there also. Do yourself a favor, and go to Tomokun nearby instead. A good version of the dear old banh mi. It is still not as good as Que Houng in Madison Htgs, but for all those banh mi lovers who can't get all the way out to suburbs to get some, this a solid option. The ingredients are fresh and you can tell the owners put in a lot of effort to make good food. If you're Vietnamese and not from Michigan then you will not like this place. The bread was cold. They forgot to put the pickled veggies and cucumber in our banh mi. We had already left by the time we found out. When I tried to order shaved ice the female employee kept on telling me that they were out of this and that after I had already put in my order. She was not knowledgable of what was in stock. Shaved ice was terrible, way too sweet. I threw it out after two bites. I ordered the pancetta bahn mi again since I fell in love with it last time I was there. This review would easily be 5 stars but reason for 3 is both times I've called ahead but my food is never ready. I give them about 30 min (was told it would be 10), assuming an extra 20 minutes should mean it's ready by the time I get there. Yet I walk in, no other customers mind you, and they started making it as soon as I said I was here to pick it up. The first time they explained the delay was due to them training a new girl. Fair enough, so I let it slide. Even though, to be honest, showing someone how to make a sandwich shouldn't be an excuse. It looked like the manager made my order today and he was the one who took the order, so the fact he's not taking it seriously enough is more disheartening. My roommate mentioned Ginger Deli to me before so I decided to come try it out for myself. I got the Pork Bahn Mi. The bread was a bit too chewy for my liking. It was either old or had been sitting out for a long time. They attempted to pack in the filling but it wasn't much since the bread itself was so skinny. Having lived in Southern California for a good chunk of my life, I was spoiled with $1.50 Bahn Mi (don't be deceived by the price, best Bahn Mis I've ever had) from Garden Grove, CA so having to pay $7 for a mediocre Vietnamese sandwich was pretty disappointing. I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon but that could be that I have high standards for food. On the other hand, their Thai iced tea wasn't bad.
