One of my favorite Asian restaurants in the area. The fried rice (especially the shrimp) As simple as it is, the wonton soup is delicious. Sushi is always fresh and priced well. I've only ever had two things that came out in a way that I hadn't expected. The sweet-and-sour chicken is just those fried chicken strips, like in a Poopoo platter, slathered in sweet-and-sour sauce that reminds me of the stuff that comes out of packets. I also got a crispy chicken dish that had, I believe to chili peppers next to it, but half of the dish was actually chili peppers. It was almost unbearable to eat. Absolutely don't get take out from here. They have great good if you eat in but not take out. I literally JUST got back with my take out and duck sauce is EVERYWHERE spilling into EVERYTHING. This is a very authentic Sichuan style restaurant. There's all sorts of food, spicy, sweet, anything that fits your Chinese food expectations. The food is the best that you can get outside of Sichuan. Of course, not all the food is spicy or numbing. There's not spicy food and sweet and salty food. It's all perfectly balanced. Not too spicy, not too salty, or not too sweet. We go to this restaurant whenever we're in the area for dinner. The restaurant itself gives off cozy vibes and is very clean. read more

The food is fine but the service blows. After calling in take-out, we had to go back to the restaurant three times for one order of chicken that was forgotten the first time we ordered our food. We were very clear on the phone but evidently the employee on the other end was not. Regardless, when we picked up our food the first time, we realized once we got home that we were missing an order of chicken. When we called back to ask where the order was, they agreed to make us the food and told us we could come back and pick it up. When we went back, we were given the food and they told us to have a great night. About five minutes later, we got a phone call saying that we took the food without paying and needed to come back and pay for the order of chicken that was supposed to be on our bill the first time. By this time, all the food had gotten cold and we had wasted an hour driving back and forth to Ginger Garden three times. Very disappointing. We called back once we began to eat and everything had gotten cold, and they refused us a refund. As a result of poor communication and service on the part of the staff, we paid $75 for cold, soggy food and dry rice. We will not be ordering from here again. read more

I'm not doubting the authenticity of the Chinese food here but the sushi is absolutely terrible. Ordered a spicy tuna and spicy salmon roll - not only was it NOT spicy but the fish was oily, tasteless, and definitely not fresh. After eating only half of my meal, I then proceeded to throw it all back up. I loved this place. We got hot and sour soup which was DELICIOUS and then the vegetable fried rice, ma-la tofu and jade roll. Get the hot and sour soup for sure, it was so wonderful and one of the best I've ever had. Most importantly, we had to eat quickly and we had a server named Ben who was fantastic. He brought the food super fast and even brought the check without us asking, so we were out of there in 25-30 minutes. Far and away my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. I love the 'authentic' menu, which lets me try new flavors and combinations that you don't get at most (Americanized) Chinese restaurants. The soup consisting of fish fillets and mustard greens is absolutely to die for--I could eat that every day. Aside from the Chinese, my son and my son-in-law swear by the Chirashi (a bowl sushi fish on a bed of sushi rice), which is enormous for the price and fresh and delicious. read more

My favorite restaurant in Amherst/Northampton area. Their authentic menu has couple amazing choices out of which I love the chicken with chilly peanuts. Wontons in hot oil and the crab Rangoon are also my favorite appetizers. However one of the waiters is very rude and we hate it when he serves us! By far the best Chinese restaurant in the upper valley. The menu has many "authentic Chinese" dishes (the ones also described in Chinese, the place is busy but efficient, and comfortable and affordable. The location is convenient, but has had many failed Chinese restaurants before this, and this one has been great for several years. The food is terrific but the service is outrageous. It's so frustrating to see 4 people behind the bar gossiping and letting patrons sit and wait for service. I've had some friends go to Ginger Garden recently and they have liked it, so I decided to try it out last Thursday for lunch. I ordered the sushi/sashimi lunch special. They waited until my friends' food had already come out before informing me that they were out of tuna, so they gave me salmon instead. The salmon sashimi was way too cold, it even had little ice crystals in the center from being a tiny bit frozen. The white fish sushi was weird.. 2 pieces seemed ok, although not as cold as I would have expected, and the other had a strange consistency, possibly from being partially cooked or something. It didn't really taste all that bad, so I went against my better judgement and ate it anyways. I regret that decision so much! 8 hours later I was violently ill with food poisoning that lasted for 12 hours. I called to let the restaurant know. They didn't really know what to say. They said they have never gotten complaints about their sushi before. Other friends of mine who have eaten there have had decent (not great, but not bad) experiences, although I do not know anyone else who has ever ordered sushi there before. Needless to say, I won't be going back. It can say without doubt that it was the sushi that made me sick. read more

I like their menu, they have a LOT to choose from and it's organized under Chinese, Japanese, or Asian fusion which makes it easier to navigate. The dishes are a bit hit or miss though. Some of the things I've tried are really great, but others just aren't up to snuff. It's pretty affordable so if you like Asian food I'd recommend going a couple times and trying different things, and if you didn't like them the first time you went you should try giving them another chance. I've only ever gotten take-out from here so I can't really comment on the service in store, but they've never gotten my order wrong and the people at the front are always polite and friendly. read more

Best Chinese food in Amherst by far. The food is reasonably priced and surprisingly authentic. The sushi is pretty good as well, with so many choices you can't go wrong here. The restaurant is also quite spacious and I've never had much difficulty getting a table. Once I sat at the sushi bar and got a free appetizer! The first place I ever got to experience Genuine Chinese food. Since I have ate nothing but the Americanized/Domestic Chinese since I was a kid; I was very eager to try the real menu out. Quite frankly, I loved it! The ginger, Five spices as well as the use of other fresh ingredients really tasted unique as well as actually settling well in my stomach. If you ever go here, I recommend trying their authentic menu. They also cater to people who prefer the "Domestic" or "Americanized" version of the cuisine; and even that is pretty good, as the food is definitely cooked nicely. Our waiter was very attentive and although he took a beat when we ordered our Chow Fun with black bean sauce instead of the usual brown sauce (try it, by the way), he delivered food that was comparable to the best we get in the little restaurants in New York's Chinatown. The Ma La Seafood was a delight with a good mix of shrimp and scallops accented by lots of basil. The Scallion pancake was light and crispy without the usual greasy texture. This is my regular go-to place for Chinese food. My tastes are pretty limited, so I have yet venture to their "Authentic Chinese menu", but I always enjoy the things I get there. They have a wide variety of sushi choices as well. This is not the closest place to my house but it is consistently the best, which is why I keep going back. As a native Chinese, i am very happy to have found Ginger Garden in Western Mass. The authentic menu has an amazing selection of Chinese dishes. I always order Pea Sprouts and Kung Pao chicken. After hearing that Paul Cheng had opened a new restaurant we just had to try it out as we've missed him and his food since he sold China Gourmet in Greenfield. Ginger Garden's decor is wonderful, wait staff are great and the food is superb. We decided to try some of our favorites from when Paul owned China Gourmet and we weren't disappointed. Started with spring rolls which were crispy and very flavorful. Then had pan-fried dumplings with dipping sauce which was delicious. For our entrees we had General Tso's Chicken - chicken was tender with a light coating, great sweet tangy sauce and Moo Shu Pork - pork was tender, vegetables crisp with great Hoisin sauce. The General Tso's Chicken plate had a beautiful Daikon radish/carrot flower with a cucumber wedge cut and fanned like flower leaves - beautiful. Paul remembered us from his time in Greenfield and he came over to chat during dinner and then again afterwards when he gave us a tour of the rest of the restaurant. He shared that they had made the change from dark to white meat for General Tso's Chicken cuz he thought it made the dish better and we agree. They also went with thinner dough for the pan-fried dumplings which makes them lighter and again we agree. The only down-side is that Ginger Garden isn't in Greenfield but we are already planning our next trip to Amherst to try out more of their extensive menu. Welcome back Paul! read more

The waiter didn't think we knew what we were ordering when we asked for chow mein. He thought we wanted lo mein. We repeated, chow mein. He described chow mein to us and asked if we really wanted lo mein. We again stated that we understood what chow mein was and it was what we really wanted and he finally wrote it down. The rest of the meal went okay... the waiter barely came over to see how things were going. In fact, he left a water pitcher at our table so he could probably avoid talking to us. Then at the end of the meal we asked for the bill, for which we waited a half hour WHILE HE STOOD AT THE TABLE ACROSS FROM US TEXTING. He ignored us pretty good when we tried to get his attention. Then he finally brings it over and I didn't think his service deserved much of a tip... but he did. He followed me out of the restaurant to argue his effing tip. He ended up stopping me right before the exit, where he argued with me. I told him I noticed him texting and that it took him forever to bring the bill, and that he almost didn't let us order chow mein. He told me that he took so long because my boyfriend ate really slowly. My boyfriend does not eat slowly. I'm the slow eater, if anything. He was rude, and turned to a coworker near him in the middle of our conversation to speak with him in Chinese. It was embarrassing. I'm not going back to Ginger Garden. The other experiences I've had there before this one were okay, even pretty good once. But they had been going down hill with slower and slower service until this happened.
