My go to for Chinese in/near Amherst. They do the basics well (vegetable lo mein, chicken fried rice, general gaos, clay pot dishes etc.) and they also have a good authentic Chinese menu if you like real Chinese food as opposed to the American style stuff I like. The "sizzling" dishes are as tasty as they are well presented so that's worth a try. read more

Not usually a fan of asian cuisine, but wow was I surprised when I ate here! Came with a group of people from my section in the UMass Marching band, there were about 12 of us. We were seated promptly, and the waiter came over to our table in an appropriate timespan after our arrival to take the drink order. I believe we all decided to order our meal at that point as well. Most the people I was with ordered the crab rangoon but I do not eat seafood so I opted for the tangerine chicken, because I have always liked orange chicken. The food came really quickly, and was REALLY good. My plate included a TON of chicken (which is great because I love chicken and hate when chicken dishes don't have much chicken), a huge pile of rice, and broccoli around the sides. The chicken was cooked properly and the tangerine sauce was very good and had a bit of a kick. The broccoli could've been cooked a bit more but I just am not one for hard/steamed broccoli, I like it softer. The only not so good thing was that the checks took a while to be delivered. The place was not busy, and we all had ordered 1-2 things so I don't really see a reason for the checks coming in shifts with some taking 25 minutes to come. My friends and I almost missed our bus back to campus, which would not have been awful as it is so close but December in Massachusetts is windy and freezing and we would not have been happy to walk back... lol. Luncheon special shrimp with cashews, wonton soup and pork fried rice. The shrimp with cashews was good, but server needed to take it back to add cashews. The cashews would be better If they were sautés with the shrimp and vegetables. Their flavor would come out. Wonton soup was okay wonton was doughy. Pork fried rice was lacking in flavor. I wish I could give them less than a star. Don't order during the holidays. Placed an order online. Once I paid it said it would take 2 hours for the order to be ready. At the restaurant I was told they were running a little behind. One hour later, so 3 hours since the order was placed, they were not even close to having my order ready. I used to be a regular customer in the past and really liked it, but the place has deteriorated a lot. For one, they use extremely high sodium levels that make the food inedible. On reporting inedible amounts of salt in my dishes, for instance, I was rudely told to send back ALL the food ( even the amount I threw into my trash ) back to the restaurant so somebody could check whether I was lying - this after being a valued and long time customer who had never reported issues in any previous interactions in my long time stay in the valley. Nobody called back, nor offered alternatives, nor apologised after I did send back most of the food and the next day the employees argued about how the head chef found the food to be perfectly fine without any apologies. Not only has the food quality gotten worse, but the management was rude and non-caring about customer satisfaction or long-term customer relations. read more

I only ever get the sushi lunch special, so I cannot say much about e rest of the menu, but they do the sushi well, and the salad they give is not your typical iceberg lettuce salad, it is a mixed greens salad. The waiters are always super nice, which makes the experience a good one. read more

Fresh Chinese food but definitely pay for ambiance. I won't go back for sushi because it was overpriced for no reason, I've had more flavor for half the cost from big-y. Ginger Garden was okay, but I didn't really enjoy the food too much. I found the menu difficult to work with my tastebuds.

We ate at Ginger Garden last night after not having been in a while. We were extremely disappointed in the meal. We had a pu pu platter and a moo shu vegetable dish. Before the meal we asked for won ton noodles to munch on, something we always loved. These were extremely disappointing as they were dripping in grease! Each item in the pu pu platter was also drenched in grease! This was a very bad night at Ginger Garden, and it will be a very long time before we try it again. They have to cut back on the fatty, greasy offerings! We go to other Chinese restaurants in Mass. where this is not the case, so I know that all Chinese food does not have to be this disgustingly greasy! One good thing though: They finally have hot water in the ladies room! It was always tough washing your hands in there on those blustery, cold winter nights with just freezing cold water read more

Wow. What a shock and delightful surprise. Real Chinese food prepared so well and so tasty. We ordered from the authentic menu. The camphor smoked duck was out of this world..so smokey crispy juicy and exotic. The sliced fish filets with mushrooms was a huge portion of fresh fish, tons of mushrooms, ginger, garlic, and fresh peppers. My goodness. We'll be back soon! Amherst/Northampton has a bounty of excellent Chinese restaurants with The Great Wall, Oriental Flavor, Amherst Chinese (well, I like it), and now Ginger Garden. read more

We tried Ginger Garden because my daughter said that the students from China in her department ate there. We were automatically given the authentic Chinese menu. The average prices of the dishes on the authentic menu are a couple of dollars more expensive than the dishes on the standard/takeout menu. Some dishes on the authentic menu are pricey. We ordered Braised fish filet with shiitake mushrooms Baby bok choy with black mushrooms Chicken and chestnut in clay pot Mo-Pu tofu (substituted with beef in place of pork, a spicy dish) I would classify the authentic menu as gourmet Szechuan food, but there's an ample choice of non-spicy dishes (3 of our dishes weren't spicy). The flavors seem authentic and there is a precision in the way the dishes were prepared. The portion size of each dish was large, which justifies the higher prices, so beware of over-ordering or come with a big appetite. The decor is classy, clean, and spacious. We sat within the glass overhang. The service was attentive. If Yelp gave out half stars, I would give this restaurant 4.5 stars. read more

Ugh this wasn't good. The waiter was pleasant but we didn't get our drinks until halfway through the meal, we had no napkins and no knives either (which I get you don't need normally in a Chinese restaurant but the beef teriyaki was in edible without it). Wontons in chili oil were ok. The spicy chili beef was dry and salty and despite being warned about the spice level, it wasn't that intense. Singapore noodles would have been fine if we didn't find a hair in them... And they were also just super dried out. The menu(s) are pages long also which you should be immediately skeptical about. Really spectacular Chinese restaurant. Probably the most authentic around. This HUGE restaurant typically has a wait, and try to find a parking spot. Beautiful decor. So many plants are various rooms. The regulars here get their own chopsticks. Overall, very impressive decor. Service is fantastic. People at the front desk were so attentive and good with handling the long wait. The waitstaff were very friendly, despite 6-7 different workers coming to ask how we were and to take our plates away. Pricing is reasonable, but don't forget you are in a large restaurant with quality food. The menu is Asian fusion, majoring in Chinese cuisine and minoring in Japanese, Thai, and tastes of Korean and Vietnamese. Fantastic menu. So much to choose from. I took a boring approach and ordered the chow fun, which was one of the best I've ever had. Gravy wasn't too heavy, a great ratio of noodles, to vegetables and chicken. Great sesame chicken. The chinese food here tasted like it was lean cuisine microwavable food. The sizzling chicken was not sizzling nor did it have any flavor. The sauce was watery and the chicken was a questionable texture. The lo mein was okay, but the meat here is so bland and unseasoned. I got the sweet potato tempura roll which was actually quite good and I got a salmon avocado roll with spicy crab on top and that was quite good as well. I was pretty satisfied with the sushi. This place is alright but I would never order Chinese food here (or maybe i ordered the wrong thing.) read more

I stopped here for lunch after reading the many positive reviews. My hopes rose when I read the menu as I saw several items that used to be in the menu at Panda East back when their Chinese food was excellent. (It's awful now.) But the meal was a huge disappointment. My hot and sour soup had a bit of hot but no sour and lots of dark brown gloopiness. Though I saw other tables getting tea, I didn't get any until I asked and then it came half way through the meal. My pork with black bean sauce had no black beans. I found a grand total of 1/3 of a black bean in the whole dish, and the black beans are what give this dish it's appeal. There were a few slivers of red pepper in it, but mostly all there was was lots of lightly fried onions, some of which tasted raw. The pork fried rice that came as a side dish was dry and had maybe 2 tiny slivers of pork and two tiny bits of fried egg white in the entire serving. It was hard to eat the rice with chopsticks because it was so dry it didn't stick together. Sigh. read more

Very Chinese, very impressive food. Hard to imagine there is a so chinese restaurant in such a small town.

Until today we had only done takeout through delivery express and we were always very happy with the quality of the food. Today we took friends to the restaurant and the food was even better; just outstanding. Everything we ordered was so flavorful and delicious. I'd recommend: Eggplant with garlic sauce, ginger chicken with green beans, vegetable pad Thai, pork and tofu, scallion pancakes, fried dumplings, crab rangoons. We also ordered a scallion and shrimp dish from the traditional menu which was amazing with the seafood cooked perfectly. I've lived in Amherst for five years now and have always had Ginger Garden on my radar. I checked it out recently and was quite disappointed. My partner and I tried several dishes (admittedly, they do have a vast menu, so perhaps we were unlucky) and we were not satisfied. I chose the chestnut chicken cooked in a clay pot. The brown sauce had a bland flavor and the chicken was low quality, clearly mostly nibbles of fat. Another dish I tried were the scallion pancakes. The flavor was good, however they were drenched in oil and overly chewy, giving off a plastic taste. After our meal my stomach was quite upset for the rest of the night. read more

Ginger Garden is run by the former owner of China Gourmet in Greenfield. I'm so excited that Paul is back in the business of serving great food for a fantastic price. Most of the China Gourmet staff is now working at Ginger Garden...they are friendly and patient. We had a classic roll, a tuna cucumber roll, scallion pancakes, veggies with garlic sauce, tea, wontons with hot sesame sauce and another roll for under $40.oo. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Ginger Garden used to be the best Chinese and Japanese restaurant in the area. Not any more. If you like waiting a long time to order and then a long time to get your food, and then a very long time to get your bill, then this is the place for you. The food used to be terrific but now it's just okay - and definitely not worth the wait. We had to ask for some of the crunchy noodles while we were waiting and when they finally came, they were stale. The soups were just lukewarm. No chopsticks were offered. Substitutions used to be free, but now cost a dollar. They add the tip for parties over 5 people, even when two of them are children. When we protested this, after asking for our bill twice and finally going up to the register, they said they didn't know how to remove it. Amherst has better Asian restaurants with better service. The food was good. The one star is for the managers response to my incorrect chicken pad thai, I was given chicken fried rice. I once got fried rice with rat turds so I can not stomach fried rice. I called Ginger Garden when I returned home (35 minutes) and said 'you messed up my order, I live far away, what are we going to do about this.' I was passed to a supervisor who said *I* was wrong, they always checked 3X. My son was with me when I called in the order on speakerphone. the original clerk had to ask ME to repeat my order 3X, so I'm really surprised it was wrong. The supervisor said 'it's your fault, because we repeat the order again when you pick up so you knew it was fried rice'... NO, the pick up clerk merely said 'spicy cucumber?' (Yummy) and not the other 2 items. Supervisor: "oh then she's fired for not saying all 3 of your items" Me: "no, that's extreme, a reminder to repeat everything is sufficient." I was a dining room manager for many years. The correct response is , 'we'll talk to her about correct protocol, let us replace your meal' But Ginger Garden supervisor made a disparaging remark about the cashiers intelligence and eventuallly offered me a credit after 2 minutes of petty bickering at me. In my 60 years of life I've never heard someone in charge be so anti customer, (inferring I was a liar)and disparaging to her staff to a stranger/customer. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but they didn't make it easy. The servers were very friendly, but slow. Dinner for three took an hour to reach our table and when it did even my Pad Thai could have used some more flavor and the rest was nothing special.
