This place was once called United China. A few years ago, they renovated their restaurant and changed their name to Ginger Root. Their menu has some of the best Chinese food in my area, and my family and I have never had a single complaint. The family who owns and runs the restaurant are also some of the nicest people we've met in the food business. We've never once not felt welcome here. If you visit around lunchtime, you'll be able to choose the new buffet over ordering from the menu. Not only does it give you a chance to try something new, but there are usually fruits and little desserts to pick up after! Otherwise, their menu has a lot of great dishes, from your standard Chinese food choices to newer additions such as the lunch- or dinner-boxes. There's even a sushi bar there with a chef (although I've never tried it myself - I'm not a big fan of sushi in general). The portion sizes they serve are perfect in my opinion; if you're truly hungry, you'll probably finish, otherwise you'll probably get to bring some home. Ginger Root is a really pleasant establishment, and with their latest renovation, they've added a whole new level of class to their restaurant. Standard. My co worker and I ordered take out from this place for lunch and while we didn't have any of their specialty rolls, their standard hand rolls were pretty big and chock full. I would not mind trying some of their other options. The bad thing is they have the pink ginger which is not my favorite and their wasabi was pretty dry...I like my wasabi creamier. But an extra plus THEY DELIVER! AND their lunch buffet looks pretty yummy..many dessert and sushi options even though on the smaller side. I will be back! read more

I order here once a week and it hasn't been too disappointing. Sushi is pretty good. Definitely go pick it up instead of having it delivered. You will wait for at least an hour although they claim 30-40 min. I ordered last weekend at 8:45, and didn't get a knock at my door until 10pm and that's the time they close. Nearly three hours to deliver food. The food was decent in the past but this is unacceptable. After two phone calls, and being assured that our food was on the way, we have cancelled. No apologies or attempts to rectify the situation. Will never order from them again. read more

First let me start by saying the young lady that this is the last time I leave a tip before food and delivery. I never ever ever write bad reviews for anywhere but tonight was an exception. I pre-tipped 20% and what followed was some of the worst service I ever received. I had to leave my house because I found out my childhood dog would be put down the next morning and i went to say goodbye. Because of this I was unable to answer my phone when the driver called and when she got to my house she was very rude to my wife saying she tried to call and she couldn't find the house because she couldn't see the numbers clearly illuminated by the light on the front porch. My wife explained the situation and she said yeah whatever just sign this and left with an attitude. On top of this we each paid 1.60 extra for both of our meals to have an order of large fried noodles which were not delivered with our meal. We also ordered and egg drop soup and they brought us wonton instead. Food itself was mediocre to sub-par and the service was the nail in the coffin. $35 pissed away and I'm still hungry. read more

I'm a Ginger Root regular. I'll confess, I've only ever had the lunch buffet. Unlimited sushi and Chinese for $8?! Being that it's a small buffet, the selection isn't huge, but the sushi is very good and there's a decent variety of sushi and rolls. No sashimi, but that's okay. I'm a sushi fanatic, so I don't end up having the Chinese food too often, but everything I've tried has been excellent. Honestly, the best Chinese food I've had anywhere in Glastonbury. if the review was just on food it would be 5 stars, but the severity on how bad the customer service is makes it 2 stars. We've only order delivery shushi about 5 times and every time we order they "estimate" 30 -45 minute delivery but manages to show up no earlier than 1 HOUR and 15- 30 Minutes later. Keep in mind we're 3 minutes driving distance from them. The first time was dinner rush so we excused it but this has happened 4 out of 5 times. And when we called to see where our food was they were extremely rude on the phone saying. " Driver is Out be there soon" and without anything else being said they hang up. FOOD GOOD. I give this an extra star because they deliver, and promptly, to Glastonbury! The food is good enough. Stick to basics. Soups are good, dumplings not so much, california type rolls are similar to grocery store fare and totally acceptable. It aint gourmet but...delivery in the burbs! read more

Food was just OK. The Philadelphia roll only had salmon and cream cheese and it was very salty. I don't think I've ever had one that didn't have cucumber or avocado or something else in it. The shrimp tempura was pretty good. This was my first successful order. I've tried to order before but they have been out of what I've wanted. Today they were out of yellowtail but I substituted. Tried Ginger root on the recommendation of a neighbor. Having recently moved to this side of town, we were looking for a place with Japanese and Chinese for take out. We had a coupon for a discount, and it was expired, but hey, I've had other places honor their expired menu coupons. They said they wouldn't, okay, but since my order was almost $60, I could get a free General Tso Chicken... so I said sure. Took an extra 15 minutes, and when they came out with it, I was informed that my Coconut Shrimp was in this bag as they had forgotten to put it in with the first order... Whew... Having to drive back would have sucked.. Ha Ha... Got home, unpacked the order, they screwed up on my GF's meal... Chicken instead of the ordered shrimp. Called to let them know, and rather than running it out to us as it was their mistake, they told me to bring back the order and they would replace it. After hanging up, I went to grab one of the Teriyaki Chicken appetizer pieces, and it was just naked chicken. No marinade, no sauce, just deep fried plain chicken mildly reminiscent of plain chicken wings, but really dry. So I brought them back with me, too. The Shrimp dish was ready and when I showed him the chicken strips and asked what these were, he said "Chicken Teriyaki".. I pointed out that there was no sauce, or even marinade, and they were deep fried... He said "that's how we do it here"...I pointed out that the menu SAYS "Chicken or Beef Teriyaki"... There's NO teriyaki on it !!! It should be swimming in sauce and BROILED ! He started to get indignant and flipped the menu to the Bento Boxes and said if that's how I wanted it, I should have ordered from THERE instead of the Appetizer menu... Apparently, since it does NOT specify "Teriyaki Chicken or Teriyaki Beef" you get plain chicken... I have NEVER seen this before ANYWHERE, and had to argue with him to get that refunded to my card. The Gen Tso order was about 1/2 the size I usually see, maybe because it was a freebie, but the other orders were on the smaller size too. And the Gen Tso sauce was just a greasy puddle at the bottom of the container. Food quality was well below Chaing Jaing, Luen Hop, or Panda King. I've had mixed up orders before from other places. Never this much problem getting it resolved. Between the food and the service, we won't be back or recommending Ginger Root. read more

I cannot believe this place! My order took an hour and a half to get to my place after during the phone call they said it would be 25! When the food finally got here I was real excited because I was hungry. I snag the food and give the guy my tip, $6!!(which was more than 20% but I understand delivery must be hard and it was like 1030.) So I start unwrapping the food from the plastic bag and out of no where sauce spills from the bag. It gets all over my freaking carpet and shirt. Somehow the teriyaki from my steak and seeped out of the Styrofoam container all over the bag. I'm pissed but I grab a paper towel and put it under the food, I'm hungry and I just want to eat. Aaaaaannd of course, you guessed it, I take one bite of this "meat" and it's as chewy as a freaking tire and burnt to a crisp with just enough sauce to make it look regular and moist. well my wife and I are both foodies. And wanted to try sushi at Ginger root today. I was thoroughly disgusted when we walked in to see an employee at the sushi bar handling the food without gloves. This is not only disgusting but a health code violation. This appears to be common practice because they diddnt even flinch when we stood there looking at the employee. Long story short if you alredy eat there your food is being handled in a unsafe way. If you plan on eating there do it at your own risk!!!! read more

Super happy to have tried AND liked this place. There aren't many (or possibly any) Japanese places that deliver to me so I was ecstatic when I stumbled upon this on grub hub. I enjoyed the dynamite roll a lot and really liked the spicy crab roll. I liked the Chinese food a little less but it was still good. I think the veggie lo mein was good but could've used a bit more flavoring, the seafood mein fun wasn't bad but one of the types of seafood(not sure what it was) was a bit chewier than I would've liked. The broccoli and garlic sauce was good just not my favorite. They don't have the option of brown rice instead of white rice which is unfortunate but not the end of the world. I don't understand why these people are still in business! *Disgusting* is the word for this restaurant, they used to be called (United China II) and later changed their name to Ginger Root to attract the crowd. I used to order allot from this restaurant, considering that their prices were ok, and food was ok, but after going to their buffet, and actually going in the restaurant, I was disgusted.....First of all, SAVE your money & go elsewhere, only if you knew what goes on in there :-( They changed their name after having so many problems with the health department. Second, I have no CLUE why they are still in business, because not only they gather all their leftovers and try to feed them to you, you also find hair, & OBJECTS- yes I said objects in their food... First time I seen it, I said to myself, (ok it probably got in there by mistake, but then ordered a 2nd time, and it was a big MISTAKE) They also leave their food on the floor, I found that out the hard way :-/ I don't recommend anyone wasting their time or their money, go ELSEWHERE, is not worth it. read more

I've been ordering take-out from Ginger Root for years but yesterday I decided to try the Monday-Saturday $8.95 Chinese / Japanese lunch buffet. It was absolutely delicious!! The egg foo young, shrimp dish, and fried scallops were so good! At the Sushi bar I loved the spicy tuna and the seafood sushi! Yung and Kim are great hosts and make you feel like you're part of the family (their daughters help out at the restaurant)!! Try it out - you'll love it!! read more

An hour and 40 minutes after placing an order online for delivery, when I live less than 2 miles away from the location I called to cancel my order. When I called the manager gave no apologies, just quickly responded saying you have to call the online company to cancel the order. That is not customer service!
