Oriental Cafe has really nailed it the last couple of times I've gone. Earlier this year, I went here for dine in. It was a holiday weekend and we were the only ones dining in, but takeout orders were booming and our waitress (a very friendly and welcoming short Asian woman) was doing an amazing job checking in on us, and running over to the takeout area constantly to give people orders. On that day, I really enjoyed my Miso Soup (a perfect small portion to warm me up) and Teriyaki Tofu, although it came with a ton of onions that I did not care for. It came out sizzling hot and seemed to continue to cook after it was on my table, so the onion flavor became really strong and almost gave me a headache, but I ate around it. The veggies were fresh and the tofu had a great crispy breading on it. The sauce was very thick and a little went a long way - I almost wish it were a little thinner so it could spread more evenly across my food to give it some moisture. Today I ordered takeout online through the Seamless site. It said food would be ready in 10-15 minutes, which felt crazy fast. Lo and behold, about 12 minutes after I placed my order, I got a text that it was already ready for pickup! I couldn't grab it until well over 20 minutes had gone by, and even by the time I got home, everything was still perfectly hot and nothing had to be reheated. A young man gave me my order and I was in and out of the plaza in 60 seconds or less, so efficient and no wait! I tried the Teriyaki Tofu again today because I really did love it, but keep forgetting to ask for no onions. I also got the Peanut Avocado Maki Roll with Spicy Mayo - I've never seen this combo for sushi and had to try it! The seaweed had a really strong flavor that surprisingly overpowered the peanuts, how odd. I almost wish this came with some sort of peanut sauce to really double down on the flavor! It was good and fresh but a little less exciting than I thought it'd be. Their menu has a wide range of both Chinese and Japanese dishes. There's plenty of parking in the shared lot, and you have to go down some steps to the bottom floor of the plaza. The steps are a little tilted, so watch out. I'm not sure if there is a mobility impaired accessible way to access this floor. Prices seem reasonable and takeout was very fast. I'll be back! read more

I was feeling under the weather (sore throat caught from my grandson), so figured some miso soup would be helpful. Ordered two maki roles (salmon/avocado and cucumber/avocado). Food tasted decent enough - I ate it all. Within a couple hours, it was coming back up and out both ends (not to be graphic). I'd give the atmosphere at O Cafe 2 stars; the dining room isn't the most inviting, and the lighting is quite dim. The staff is neutral, not particularly friendly, but not rude either. That said, the food is consistently excellent, and takeout orders are prepared quickly. The menu is impressively diverse, offering Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes. You're not likely to have an unforgettable dining experience here, but if you're in the mood for solid Asian food at a reasonable price, O Cafe more than delivers. This pan-Asian restaurant features Japanese, Thai, and Chinese-based cuisine and generally I'm a little leery of such "jack-of-all trades" restaurants since usually they're mediocre. But the sushi was pretty good - not out of this world, but pretty good. My wife had their spicy maki sushi assortment and said they were all tasty and fresh; my daughter and I had their omakase sushi and sashimi combos. The combo arrived attractively plated, accompanied by finely shredded cabbage, pickled ginger, and wasabi paste. The sashimi assortment (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white tuna, and sea bream) was fresh and clean-tasting; the nigiri sushi assortment (similar fish as sashimi but including ebi) was also good; and the California roll was satisfactory. No miso soup or salad came with the set, however. Service was prompt and attentive. A good place for your sushi fix and we'll visit again to try other dishes! read more

I wasn't planning on making a yelp review on this restaurant but the dissatisfaction from the food prompted me to. Chicken Katsu is a classic dish that I always feel better getting than chicken tenders. This restaurant has established that I no longer feel this way. I'm afraid to order Chicken Katsu from other chains including this now because this frozen and fried dish has been one too many times been still frozen and tough. The restaurant is loud and nosier than it appears, but perhaps it was just because there were families. The table we were sat at was weird and next to the wall of the cashier. I honestly love everything about this place and I definitely come here way too often. Sushi is typically my go-to and theirs is fresh and they make their rolls the perfect size. The steamed pork dumplings and chicken & broccoli are other go-to's and they taste great every time and are super filling. Really should be 2.5 stars, but our first visit there was much better, so maybe we just got unlucky? For the first time we visited the cafe about 2 month ago for lunch - the experience was good and we decided to come back. This time around, we visited cafe on Easter Sunday for lunch (don't know if it has something to do with the experience, but wanted to mention it. On Sunday, lunch special menu doesn't apply, so we had to order from the main menu. We got Spicy Girl specialty sushi roll as an appetizer - it was good, fresh and tasty - but this was the only highlight of the experience. I got spicy sushi combo as my main dish - there were supposed to be three different types of sushi, but they all tasted about the same, and couple of pieces had very off-putting texture - not a good sign when it comes to sushi. Crispy salmon dish was okay, but represented two tiny slices of salmon, all covered in the sauce. Sesame chicken was made out of dark meat, and it seems that dark meat was sliced without any care, so many pieces were simply off-putting. Service was mediocre at the best. We ordered steamed dumplings, chicken wings and the old standby, general Tso (Tuesday night). 1) There were only 5 of the promised 6 wings. Not as much of a problem ad you might expect because they were basic, flavorless, greasy wings. How do you mess up something as simple as wings that badly? The only good thing is that they were relatively meaty. 2) The dumpling wraps were so thin that they were falling apart, and yet they managed to taste doughy and gooey. The meat inside was unimpressive. 3) By far the worst excuse for general Tso that I've ever tried. If you're looking for an upscale restaurant with top-notch food, this is not it; however, I have visited Oriental about 15 times (take-out and dine-in) and have consistently been happy with the quality of my food and the price. Plenty of options, whether you are looking to order sushi or a different dish. As a vegetarian, I have plenty of options when I come here. Avocado salad, vegetable dishes, cold peanut noodles, and cucumber/avocado rolls are some of my favorites. In my opinion, service is the main area for improvement. On multiple occasions, service has been incredibly slow and a language barrier has affected the dining process. When I am looking for food that I know will not disappoint and will not break the bank, Oriental is my go-to. read more

This is a fine restaurant. The sushi is good for the price and the service is generally quick. Despite being in the basement floor of a somewhat strange building, the atmosphere is fine, if a little cramped. However, none of the food truely wows, and things from the Chinese side of the menu (which has both Chinese and Japanese cuisine) have been somewhat flavorless in my experience. Ugh, I've since changed my mind about this place. I've been back twice and left unsatisfied each time. The first time I went back, I brought my parents and we enjoyed a lovely Japanese meal here with decent sushi to boot. The portions were small, but our waitress informed us about their special sushi deal when we walked in (a certain percentage off their rolls, I forget how much), so we felt free to order more. It wasn't until we got the bill that our waitress informed us that the special deal on the sushi didn't apply that day...I was more than annoyed. I'll chalk it up to a miscommunication this time because our waitress was so nice, but it smacks of dishonest advertising when your waitresses talk up a sushi deal that isn't even applicable at the time. I was willing to give it another try after hearing great things about the lunch special, so I took a friend here for lunch. She got the vegetable bento box, while I got the General Tso's chicken. Thankfully, no false advertising this time, but the sauce for the General Tso's was overly gloopy and unappetizingly sweet. It was not one of the better renditions I've tried. The pork fried rice that came with it was pretty good though. My friend is a vegetarian, hence the vegetable bento box, but it turns out she could only eat about half of it, since it came with seafood shumai and a California roll (note to Oriental Cafe owners: some real vegetarian options would be much appreciated). The sushi again was decent, while the shumai were your standard frozen variety. I didn't try the vegetables. Overall, very mediocre food. I can get better at Panda Express which is saying a lot. You're pretty much paying for the atmosphere and nice service, but I'll just have to search harder for a decent Chinese restaurant in the area. read more

I've been here upwards of thirty times. It was a staple for me and my friends during school and after going back to try it again it's still as good as I remember. The lunch specials mon-sat can't be beat. The food is delicious although some plates aren't as exciting as others. Personally I'm a big fan of the fried dumplings and chicken with cashew nut. Although their sushi, miso soup and chicken yaki udon are also personal faves. The scorpion bowls are killer, but also enormously fun with friends. They have several locations in eastern CT and at this point have eaten at the Storrs & Willimantic establishments. Sushi - too many choices to list and every one that I have tried has been HEAVENLY PAD THAI, CHICKEN - delicious and recommended. Not my personal favorite, but a close 2nd Orange Beef - wife's favorite. Beef was tender, melt in your mouth delicious Wait staff very attentive. One time they were so busy I had to sit at the sushi bar. After sitting for five minutes one of the chefs offered me a free sushi sampler to apologize for the long wait. That's service. read more

I haven't had a bad experience here. My friends and I come here every now and then for dinner. Their chicken and broccoli is great, I love the sauce and the chicken always comes out nice and tender. I just wish there was more rice! I also enjoy eating their Boston sushi rolls (not the most authentic sushi roll you could get so I won't say too much more). The pricing for their meals aren't so bad for a restaurant that's near a college campus. It's usually busy during dinner nights (as most places would usually be) but the wait isn't usually too bad. Parking is decent and you're likely to find a spot since there aren't too big of restaurants in the same plaza. The staff is nice, they can be a bit more interactive with their customers but the overall service is fine the way it is. read more

Needed a quick dinner while visiting UCONN, decided to give it a try. Gyoza were good, sushi roll was also good. Huge language barrier so there was an extra sushi roll that we didn't order. Wife and I ordered General TSO's and Sesame Chicken. Both dishes came out smelling pungent, like vinegar. We sent them back, got a little attitude from the waitress. Then the manager came out and proceeded to tell me she tasted our dishes back in the kitchen and everything tasted fine. Then she proceeded to argue with me for the next few minutes saying they use the same General TSO's sauce all other restaurants used. I will never return. read more

It's the best Sushi Restaurant at UConn! Oh... right... it's the only Sushi Restaurant at UConn. But considering the fact that this is a zero-competition business in Rural Connecticut, they do a pretty bang up job here. I especially like the decor, which is dark, inviting, and fun. A good place for a college date, or even a real adult date. The sushi is good, but perhaps expectedly, not the finest I've ever had. Nothing that'll make you sick though - fresh and professionally prepared through and through. They have a nice lunch special that gets you some sushi or tempura for a low price. There are few restaurant environments in Storrs that could be considered even semi-upscale. Oriental Cafe gets four stars being one of those places. read more
