I Went to eat at Gingerbite with my loved ones on 5/21. My cousin graduated from a local college and we purposely didn't eat because we called earlier in the week to get a reservation and the food looked delicious based on the website and other reviews. Everything is made to order, so if you're in a rush, I would recommend calling ahead or make time. There were 9 of us, and we all ate more than we should have, everything was delicious! I hate to leave a bad review for the only Caribbean restaurant I know of in the area. However there is another 15 minutes away I just might have to stick with. I decided to give them a try they charged me $25 for a shrimp platter with five shrimps and a huge platter of rice. Not to mention the turkey platter had 2 small pieces of meat and a huge portion of rice. I've never seen anything like this before lol. Since there are limited Haitian restaurants in my area I had to try this place out. More of a takeout place with a few tables set up inside. We ordered 2 griot entrees both came with plantain and rice/beans. We also ordered sides of black rice, macaroni au gratin and sausage stuffed plantain. Do yourself a favor and get take out. The service here is horrible! She looked like she was upset I was coming to sit in to eat. Her whole demeanor seemed like she was bothered by me being there. Then when it was time to order I asked for a dish but I wanted the rice to be replaced with vegetables. First she said they had no vegetables. Then later I looked at the menu to find that they had salad. So I asked if she can replace the rice with that salad. She told me the salad was a separate dish. I told her I'd pay for both, I just didn't want the rice on my plate. She say Oh she's going to give you the rice cause that's what you paid for.' So apparently I paid for rice but not for what I actually would like. So much for the 'customer is always right' mentality. Then she comes out with plastic utensils. The food was good but it was overshadowed by the horrible service. I basically ate one piece of chicken, picked at the salad and boxed it all up (myself, of course). This was my first time ever eating at a Haitian restaurant. The food was amazing! I grew up eating Haitian food but they really went above and beyond with the flavor and the presentation of the food. I had the lunch special that came with rice, turkey, and fried plantains. Delicious!! The owner was very friendly and inviting. The food took about 10min to prepare but it was well worth it. I definitely will be back to taste the other dishes they have to offer! Oh before I forget, the music that they played over there is excellent. Its a mixture of island, world, kompa, reggae, dance, and pop all in one setting. I couldn't help myself from swaying to the beats. And as one couple who ate there was about to leave they started dancing with one another on their way out. The bad reviews seem to be coming from people who expected different cuisines and got lost and wound up here (watery gravy? This isn't Jamaican food! Crepes? This isn't French food! Getouttahereeeee). That's like getting a British dish of "Fish and Chips" and wondering why the chips didn't appear to be as thin, round and oily, so you're disappointed because you ordered chips and you got fries :) Or going to a Mexican restaurant and wondering why the tacos there look different than the ones you get from an American chain restaurant with a crispy shell. This is HAITIAN FOOD. It is not French. It is not Jamaican. It is not Spanish. It is its own country, with its own culture and people. Based on that, it is probably the best Haitian restaurant on Long Island. I've gone to Haitian restaurants in NY all my life (I'm Haitian) and most of the time we had to drive to Queens, NY or the other parts of the city to get to a good quality Haitian bakery or restaurant. This does the trick. They are polite, the cuisine is authentic and not too spicy for those who can't handle it, but you get some nice Pikliz on the side for those who enjoy the heat. The black rice (diri ak djon djon) is better than many restaurants in Queens, and it's nice to see that they can make a vegetarian legume (typically, it is made with meat. Always good to have an option for those that don't eat meat often or all the time). The restaurant is clean, with plenty of room to sit down. It's in a nice part of Huntington on Jericho Turnpike by all the major businesses. I wish they had more desserts or opened up a bakery side of it (so that there are more options just pate and pain patate). So far, they've made me proud! Keep up the great work! read more

I came to Gingerbites craving some good Haitian food & that's what I got. It's small but extremely bright & clean including the bathroom. Ginger bites has a great mother & daughter team that really aims to please. The Pulet is succulent & the Griot tastes like the pork version of burnt ends. The only thing I would change is the plantan's. Serve them sweet instead of the bland dry ones you gave us. read more

I used a Groupon for this place. I made my order, after my order was placed I told her I was using the Groupon. The owner said "oh you should have told me".(mind you I did not even pay yet) anyways The reason I should've told her ahead of time was because they do not give you as much when a coupon is used. which I find ridiculous. I bought food for myself and a friend. I'm Haitian, my friend is not I swear I was embarrassed. I do not recommend this place at all.
