I have been in the mood for Jamaican food since I've moved out of queens and didn't realize I had a place so close by! I doordashed some dinner, and it came nice and hot! I got the oxtails which were absolutely delicious, and the jerked chicken- also fantastic. The Mac and cheese was wonderful. The coconut rice and peas were so good and the veggies were also. I even tried a side of the pineapple hot sauce which was very tasty. So happy to have a place like this nearby, and can't wait to order again!

My fencing club buddy from East Northport has been telling me for a year to try The Foood Spot, and I finally got around it. Now I wish I hadn't waited so long. Fantastic Jamaican takeout! I ordered jerk chicken (nice and spicy, as I like it) with coconut rice and peas, collard greens on the side (they were great), plus a beef patty cuz why not. That patty was seriously amazing. The place is clean and inviting, and the person who waited on me was so friendly. Can't wait to go back and try some oxtails and more

I am pleased that I do not have to travel to BBQ (The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens) to get chef kiss Jamaican/West Indian/Soul food. The Foood Spot, which is located in Dix Hills, prepares food and drink that few Jamaican/West Indian eateries in BBQ do, such as oxtail patties, avocado slaw, scotch bonnet slaw, jerk fries, blueberry and soursop juice, coconut rice and peas, Gouda Mac and Cheese, and sliced fruit cake. The Foood Spot also sells typical West Indian/Soul food, like pork ribs, Buffalo chicken wings, candied yams and collard greens. My favorite dish is the coconut rice and peas. It is addictive! Service is quick, and staff is friendly. The downside is that there is no place to sit and eat. This is just a take out joint

I am a whole fish fan so wherever I go I search for whole fish. The Food Spot fulfilled my craving for whole fish and spicy food. The boss lady was very patient and nice over the phone with me on the veggies they cook before I placed an Uber Eats for pickup. She was even more radiant in person when I went to pickup later of the day. I absolutely LOVED my fish, cabbage and coconut pea rice. The snapper was relatively small but I did not mind that. It meant to be better portion control anyway . It had a thin layer of coating , perfectly seasoned. Inside remained moist and tender. The entire fish was NOT oily at all. The coconut rice was another supernova. Mild yet delivered what was supposed to. The Jamaca cabbages had wonderful scotch bonnet pepper flavor. The bell peppers played a great sidekick ( it was like Korean kimchi or German sauerkraut). They all danced flawlessly together!

Portions are generous. I ordered everything online for pick up. This is a take out spot hidden in a shopping center near Elwood.. kind lady came out from the back kitchen to check my order. Also, Noticed the sign at the door, they are now opened on Mondays (for dinner only) 3:30-8:30pm Didn't take a photo but my fave is the side order of vegan collard greens! It went well w the escovitch whole snapper. The only 1 mishap I ran into was that my Saltfish & Ackee Empanada was left out of the bag. I really wanted to try. I called and the lady kindly noted and I will return on my next visit to pick up. I would like to try the Thai chili shrimp and the jerk salmon next time. I'm def going back for the vegan greens! This pescatarian is grateful to be able to order the collard greens!!

It's a hit or miss there! One day they have it the next day they don't! They open at noon and you check on line and it will say sold out! They need a better way to have their food selection. Food is good, and it is pleasing to the pallet. But consistency is needed!

I love this place The food is fantastic I've tried the jerk chicken and jerk pork, both full of flavor. A tad bit dry, so I would reccomend getting a side of oxtail gravy. The lady at the counter is always super friendly and helpful. The ambiance is small but it's more of a take out spot anyways. The portion size is great for what you pay. Overall would reccomend to anyone

It is, without question, the best soul food in the state. I have no problem running down I-91 from Hartford just to get my food because the quality and taste are on a level that nobody else can touch. Don't let the neighborhood fool you; this is a masterclass in authentic cooking. Sandra and her husband Miguel have been running this place for over 30 years, and that level of dedication shows in every single dish. The food has the kind of soul and precision that defines the elite dining scene in Connecticut. If you want the real deal--the standard that every other soul food spot is measured against--this is the only place to go. It's a class act that has stayed true to its roots for over 30 years.

Although I don't typically dine out for soul food, my water was shut off due to maintenance on the outside pipes. Since it was Sunday and I usually cook Sunday dinner, I chose to visit Sandra's after hearing such high praise and wanting to try their menu. Upon arrival, I realized it doesn't particularly stand out, but there is a menu outside to review before entering. The restaurant is small, predominantly a takeout spot. I ordered the Pork Chop dinner, with sides of Collard Greens and Macaroni and Cheese. My son had the Ribs with Macaroni and Cheese and Rice, and my daughter selected the Fried Chicken, Macaroni and Cheese, and Collard Greens. I also picked up a side of Sweet Potatoes and Fried Fish. The Fried Fish was underwhelming in flavor, with a slimy breading. I prefer my fish fried until very crispy, and although it looked crispy, it needed a bit more time. The Sweet Potatoes were good but could benefit from a touch more sweetness. When I opened my Pork Chop dinner, I was surprised to find only one pork chop, especially given that the dinner costs twenty dollars and pork is typically an affordable meat. I would expect two pork chops for that price. The Mac and Cheese was decent--cooked well but lacking the deep, savory richness I seek. The Collard Greens, however, were excellent; cooked perfectly and absorbed the rich flavors of their broth and seasonings. My children found the food to be okay, rating it around 2.5 to 3 stars. There is also a refrigerator with desserts and homemade juice drinks. Overall, the staff and environment were friendly.

Compared to other bbq in the area, I believe Brothers is a winner. The food quality is great, and techniques of prep and cooking are perfectly mastered. The brisket has a flavorful crust and it breaks apart with a fork. The baked beans have all the right stuff to make them excellent. Baked Mac and cheese is BAKED. The chicken falls off the bone and smoked perfectly. Candied yams are perfect and you can actually taste the butter that you're SUPPOSED to bake into it, (they're the only ones who make it right) in my opinion. We ordered an appetizer of "burnt bacon ends", and so much flavor, and fall apart with a fork. The cocktails were potent, so beware . Did I say enough about the food? Even the service was great. Still, it misses a few foundational beats when it comes to true Southern hospitality and comfort. Atmosphere & First Impressions From the outside, you might easily mistake the restaurant for being closed. The windows make it tough to see in, and on a rainy day with the outdoor seating empty, it feels a bit hidden away. You are greeted by a wonderfully comfortable waiting area featuring plush sofas and a seating bench. I also really appreciated seeing such a diverse crowd of customers dining here, which is especially refreshing to see for this area. Be warned before you walk through the door: bring a sweater. They do not skimp on the air conditioning; they blast it! On the positive side, the bathrooms are immaculate while keeping that traditional, classic BBQ joint feel. Seating & Service When we arrived, I requested a quieter area due to sensory sensitivities. We waited a bit and were ultimately seated right next to the noisy bar. It looked like there was a cozy little nook past the fireplace that would have been ideal, but it had a laptop sitting on it. Even for a Sunday supper, keeping areas like that closed off when a guest needs a quieter space felt like a missed opportunity. Our waitress was working double duty as a bartender, so she was straight to business. She was efficient enough to give us what we needed, but lacking that warm, conversational touch. At the end of the meal, we weren't thanked for coming in but told to drive safely. We were accidentally overcharged for a fountain soda we never ordered. While the waitress corrected it when pointed out, there was an absolute lack of an apology. Taking responsibility is part of the package. The Meal: Highs and Lows The Cornbread: Starting off, the meal kicks off with complimentary cornbread, but it comes with a couple of caveats. Depending on how you were raised, cornbread camps are deeply divided on sweetness. This version is very sweet, crumbly, and honey forward. It is almost tasting like a boxed Jiffy honey mix with some extras. Unfortunately, it was cold and served with ice cold, solid butter that wouldn't spread. If you want more, it's $2 a piece, a detail they really ought to mention upfront rather than leaving it as a surprise. It is nice that they give it complimentary but they are banking on you consuming it and when you get your BBQ you want more but have to pay. It would be nice to be upfront about this. The Meats: The barbecue itself delivers. The meat is smoked nicely. We sampled the pulled pork, brisket, chicken, and sausage, paired with table-side salt, pepper, and just one single type of BBQ sauce available on the table. The Sides & Fixins: The baked beans were good, but the sides could have been much hotter. The collard greens had a noticeable crunch from the stems and consisted strictly of greens without any pieces of pork or turkey mixed in. I liked that it was not too salty for my liking. As for the mac and cheese, it lacked that signature baked cheese crust on top as seen in photos online. Visiting around 5:30pm on a Sunday evening left us wondering if we caught the tail end of things or were served leftover portions. Tableware & Details The tableware leaves room for improvement. Aside from the metal meat trays, everything is served on melamine (plastic) plates rather than real ceramic and you are each given a cloth napkin. Furthermore, guests are only given butter knives, and the cutlery could definitely be elevated to better enjoy the experience - especially to ensure proper access to napkins for a messy barbecue meal. Drinks & Hospitality The Sweet Tea: The sweet tea is sweet and good. However, you are not offered a refill here. For a Southern style spot, not offering a complimentary or even low cost refill on sweet tea felt neglectful and impolite. It's a small touch of hospitality that goes a long way. With roots that spread throughout the south, I have not experienced this even consuming BBQ at home in NY. Other Drinks: Cocktails run around $16 a person (which made neighboring tables wince a bit at $32 for two drinks), but I thoroughly enjoyed a cold Shiner beer straight from Texas. My beer was $12 tall boy and COLD. Ultimately, despite a few missteps with the sides and service, they have the smoking technique down well. True Southern hospitality is about making folks feel welcome, warm, and genuinely cared for from the moment they step in to the moment they leave, and bringing more of that heart to the dining room would elevate this place immensely.
