Last night (Valentine's Day evening) it was Friday so I knew the wait time would be long. No reservations for parties under 5. They did not have their regular menu. They had a valentines special menu. There was only one vegetarian choice. Pasta primavera with vegetable medley. There was cabbage and lettuce mixed in with the pasta! They pre cooked everything and microwaved food to order. There was so much grease/oil/ butter in the food, it was all nasty. Even the garlic bread! My husband squeezed it and a puddle of butter came out. After waiting an hour and 15 minutes and for food for two that cost $110.00 (no alcohol just food) I hoped for better food. I'm glad we have pigs because that's who is eating our leftovers. By leftovers I mean 95% of our plates. My husband got the trio. Lasagna, fettuccine Alfredo and chicken parm and the cheese was a heaping mess of congealing grossness. Olive garden in Salinas is gross but it's better than Gino's. From the fine dining point of view, I was very disappointed for the first time with not being served any bread after being seated. It's one of the things I look forward to every time I come here. It wasn't like it was at all crowded. The overall dinner was good. The calamari piccata did not disappoint. As well as the special, similar to the seafood lover's fettuccine. At the moment, I can't recall the name of the dish. Couldn't finish it because there was so much. Took home what I couldn't finish. For dessert, we had the tiramisu. A nice end to dinner. We also decided to take home a canoli. That was a mistake because the shell was hard and a bit oily, and the filling was heavy. Just didn't seem that fresh. Will we go back, most likely. We'd love to see them develop a system like other take out counters where you get a text, or some type of communication, when your order is ready. We ordered two pasta trays for a party, and I have to say they were absolutely terrible. This used to be our go to place for birthdays, every year I'd want blackened chicken fettuccini and the penne Adriatico. Neither one had any flavor whatsoever!! The blackened chicken had absolutely NO salt, and not nearly enough seasoning. Somehow the chicken was extremely dry as well. The quality has gone WAY down, and I don't think we'll be ordering again. I do want to say the interior is looking really tired. Even a little bit of money spent to touch up paint, or add placemats or even plastic red checkered table cloths to hide the scarred up old tables would help. But , diners, give Gino's a chance. Came here yesterday to celebrate my Birthday and as always I was not disappointed. I had a cup of artichoke bisque, calamari picatta with mash potatoes and veggies, my husband and son shared a calzone with garlic bread and my daughter had a cup of artichoke bisque and French toast. MUST YELP ABOUT THIS PLACE IMMEDIATELY!!! As a tired and weary road warrior (who was up at 4:30am for a flight from LAX to SJC), all I wanted for dinner was some carb-packed, cream-heavy delicious pasta. I ordered the Castroville Chicken Alfredo and subbed spaghetti for the penne. To my delight, when I picked up at the counter, I was given a choice of soup or salad to add....and of course I went straight for the artichoke bisque, which was a little tangy and very creamy with some chunks of soft artichoke and SO UNIQUE AND DELICIOUS!! The pasta....hefty portion, omg! The pasta filled the entire to-go container to the brim, and the noodles were evenly coated in the Alfredo sauce. Only wish is that it had a bit more in the toppings department (barely any bacon and just a little chicken), but the pasta and sauce was so delicious that I barely noticed it was lacking chicken. I finished the soup and I'm taking about 75% of the pasta home with me-- I know this will make great leftovers. I ordered the Chicken Parm from here a few nights ago. I was very impressed with the portion size. I actually made two whole meals out of it. I thought the food was very good, but was disappointed it didn't come with at least one piece of garlic bread. They did provide bread and butter, but it wasn't the same. The young ladies that took my order and helped me out were all very friendly. I was being rude (talking on the phone with family on the east coast) and they had no problems helping me out. My favorite dish is Carmela's Penne Primavera, and it's loaded with vegetables and a healthy amount of garlic. Absolutely fabulous. The artichoke bisque (that comes with dinner) is creamy and flavorful with chunks of heart and leaves. Terrific and satisfying. The capellini al naturele with chicken is a huge portion with a perfectly cooked half chicken breast. The pasta is fresh, al dente and the sauce is so good and so fresh, I ate almost the entire plate. And it's a very generous portion! Also a great martini. However the artichoke bisque was full of un edible artichoke leaves. Flavor and consistency was spot on from all my memories of having it. This place is decent. I enjoyed the music and atmosphere. We all enjoyed our food, which consisted of the shrimp scampi, pasta primavera, cheese ravioli, and blackened chicken fettuccine. However...we had ordered calamari with fries and only received the calamari...The waiter even repeated back that we wanted fries but never put the order in I suppose. I tried ordering a cafe latte but was told they couldn't make it. I asked if they had espresso and they said yes and were able to make me an espresso with cold milk. So I guess they didn't have a means of heating the milk??!! Otherwise...that is a cafe latte... My friend had a bug in his lemonade, which can happen but just added to the overall experience. We also never got the bread that should come with the entrees. That was very disappointing and appears to be an ongoing theme from others too. Don't say you offer something on the menu and force your customers to follow up on it. Because of these additional items, I knocked one star off of the rating. read more
