Every interaction with this business has been disappointing. The proprietor is rude and unhelpful. He acts like he doesn't want your business. They also only take cash, which is absurd. I can understand wanting to avoid credit card fees, but this makes it very inconvenient for customers. Add a surcharge if you must. Despite all that, I have some very nice handmade hiking boots I wanted restored and conditioned, so I dropped them off. This guy simply put basic black shoe polish on them and didn't even polish them. They looked horrible. I had to take them to someone competent who had to clean them with saddle soap to get the polish off and then condition them correctly. Now they look and feel brand new. To add insult to injury, when I went to pick up my boots, this guy hands me one boot. When I ask where the other one is he said that's all I brought. He argumentatively insisted that I'd only brought one boot. Luckily, I spotted the other boot on one of the shelves, so he begrudgingly gave it to me. This is seriously one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. It goes without saying that I would never recommend this awful business. Look elsewhere. read more

I bought a pair of designer boots and the shaft of the boot was super narrow and my calves are not the skinniest so I could not zip them up, but I didintl want to return them, so I tried to stretch them and failed, so I took them to Gino's shoe repair and Steve did an amazing job stretching them out so I can now zip them with ease. I was so pleasantly surprised. They needed to be stretched quite a bit and he did it, as promised and he did it in a way that the boots still kept their shape and now I wear them and zip them up with ease. Don't bring your nice sneakers here!! I went in for a simple sole replacement and somehow he significantly messed up the back of the shoe - it's scraped off on both shoes even though there was no need to touch that part to replace the black soles. And it was $60. Beware. read more

I needed to have a pair of ballroom dance shoe heels cut down about a 1/2" to a more comfortable height. Steve did an excellent job lowering the heels and re-tipping the shoes. He also moved the heel to make sure that it was balanced properly. I was able to use them for a dance party and they worked beautifully. I also found out that he is an Argentine Tango dancer so he definitely understood my situation. :-) read more

I went to Gino's to repair two pairs of my shoes. I am very pleased with the work he did on my shoes, they look brand new. The leather on one of my shoes was really damaged from rains and general wearout + the heel was worn out. He restored this pair like magic with very high quality work. You can't see the wear out on heel anymore, he leveling is perfect. i did feel he is a bit pricey but I have never spent on shoe repair before, so I don't have a comparison point. I recently stopped by Steve's shop to get some advice on rubber outer soles for a new pair of shoes. With his well-spoken honesty, he advised to wait until the outer soles had a bit of wear first. Then rubber outer soles would adhere much better given the shoe's synthetic sole. This is the kind of personalized expertise you don't find in most shoe repair shops. There is a world of difference between a classically trained shoemaker and craftsman versus a modern day shoe repair tech who only does "R & R" (remove & replace) work. The tech will never replace the craftsman, not ever. So, it comes down to the quality of the work you want to have for your shoes. Shoes that cost several hundred dollars, handmade by old-world shoemakers deserve the same level of skill that created them. If this isn't important to you or seems to be too esoteric, then by all means go somewhere else for your shoe repairs. You'll feel better and so will Steve. read more

I have been going to Steve (owner of Gino's Shoe Repair) for over 15 years. At a co-worker's suggestion, I tried Steve and have only the best results. I am a shoe whore and have literally hundreds if not thousands of pairs of shoes. When I find a good, all leather shoe I like, I buy multiple colors and sometimes duplicates so I can be sure to have them year after year. Many times Steve has "saved" my fav shoe by adding thicker, rubberized soles and/or just fixing them. Even my cheap shoes occasionally needed regluing or work done, no problem. Steve is regularly very busy so you can expect to wait a week or so for any project. I like that I can call and he will stay late in the evening, as traffic will sometimes delay him, me and the entire Bay Area in the mornings. He was very honest and professional with me. I brought in a pair of Dansko clogs with the soles splitting off on both shoes. He told me it wasn't worth it to fix them because that type of sole dries out and would likely split again. I explained that I had worn the shoes at my wedding and that I wanted to wear them to my sister's wedding. He said he would fix them ($30) but couldn't promise I would get more than a few days of wear out of them and wanted to make sure I understood that before spending the money. This man did a great job on my Michael kors purse. We were originally supposed to take out the old rings holding the straps to my purse because one of the hinges had broken. This guy must be the most obnoxious person I have met. It is 3:30pm on Thursday afternoon. I didn't happen to have my shoes with me, but I was nearby and thought I will ask him a quick question. No other customer were waiting in the shop. This guy just erupted! He needs to see the shoes etc. etc. Fair enough! No problem. But why the outburst! I changed the heel on my shoes and my husband's shoes (each pair cost me $25). I put a lining on the sole to protect the leather sole. He also wore my boots in the place where the sheaf had gone. Everything was done perfectly, shoes and boots looked like new. He is really nice and too bad I don't have enough shoes to take there for repair. His work is high quality.
