We have an awesome shoe repair guy in San Mateo and were passing this place after getting a sandwich next door, my husband was desperate to get another opinion for his beloved Mephisto's, popped in here. When we saw this owner, he looked so much like our guy in San Mateo, we joked that what if they were twins? So we go up to the counter and were told exactly the same thing: they could not darken the shoe to more closely match the other. We were oddly reassured now that two experts had told us the same thing. And guess what? Turns out though they're not twins, they are brothers! Compact shop teeming with every imaginable shoe accessory, e.g. laces and horns, etc. It wasn't until after we'd left the store, that we discovered he also provides a host of other services for example repair watches and switches out batteries, etc., which I'd known, would've taken half a dozen of them for batteries. An old school business with old school service. First time, I came into get a watch battery. No problem. He had it done for me the next day. He called me before he said it was going to be done. Awesome. I'm writing this because this is my second visit. This time it was to get my Birkenstock sandals resoled. I knew it can be done, plus I wanted to support a local business. I called him first to confirm and he confirmed that he can do it but needs to look at it in order to give me an estimate. I stopped by and it did need a full resole on the pair. $85 is fair for the resole and labor. I told him if I can pick it up the next day, he said that wouldn't be a problem. Later that day he said it was done and ready to be picked up. Wow! I still came in the next day. The sandals looked awesome, plus he shined the leather! I was not expecting this excellent service. I bought a brand new leather motorcycle jacket. It fit like a glove. I loved it. At the end of the first day of wearing it the zipper broke. I was really unhappy. I sent a memo to the vendor on Etsy but I also looked up zipper repairs. The closest was Village Cobbler. I went the next day. I expected to have to leave the jacket for a week but I wanted it fixed. Solag looked at it...and, as he was chattering away with me about our middle eastern roots he grabbed some tools from the basket on his counter and just fixed it! I asked him how much, he just shrugged it off. I had to force him to accept $20. I left a happy man. The next day it happened again. But this time I saw what happened and figured out the fail point. I took it back to Solag and showed him. Told him I wanted him to put two snaps down at the bottom of the zipper to transfer the load. He complimented me on my problem solving and once again just dug right in and fixed it while I waited. Had me come into the back with him so we could talk and I could hold it while he worked on it. He was a complete joy to spend time with. Not only did he fix my jacket, while I waited, but I made a friend. Once again I had to force $50 on him. A wonderful, wonderful man. I've had Solag repair my Ricardo Beverly Hills luggage there for the previous 25 years, and he's the only place I trust. Arriving on a Friday, Solag quoted me for pickup on Tuesday, with the understanding that he might get it done earlier. I grabbed a sandwich next door at Lorenzo's, and found a nice spot by the bay to eat. Before I finished eating, I got a call from Solag, and MY BAG WAS DONE. This man is not honest. He admits it and says he's going to continue to be dishonest. Very strange. I called him about the honey he harvests, bottles and sells and he says it is 1 pound of honey. After I bought it, I saw the label says it is 12 ounces. I explained to him that 12 ounces is 3/4 of a pound and not 1 pound. He said yes, but it is dense. I explained that density affects the weight, but it is still not 1 pound of honey. 1 pound is 16 ounces. I asked him to please stop telling people it is 1 pound of honey if it's only 3/4 of a pound. He smiled and said he sells it as 1 pound and he's going to continue to tell people that is 1 pound, even though he knows it's not. He said he's going to continue to lie to customers. I have some wonderful boots--two pairs. The craftsmanship is exquisite. That said, I never really wore them because the heels felt too tall. I had a great experience here. My luggage got messed up and I had to get it fixed, and this was the place my luggage brand recommended. It took awhile because he had to order the parts but once he received the parts he did a great job! He ordered them directly from the luggage brand and even tho he couldn't get the correct color I still liked it since it now looks unique and identifiable. Overall it took some time since he had to order the parts but he did a great job and I'm satisfied with the work that was done.
