Let me start by saying that the Sushi at this place was great. It was not too "ricey" and good taste. Miso soup, Edamame and Gyoza-s were as expected. The reason for the three stars is the service and the smell of the sewer :(. We were a party of 7 who went there on New year's eve and there was hardly anyone at the restaurant. They took our order and the appetizers came pretty quickly. In the meanwhile a couple of parties of 2 arrived, the server took their orders and filled them. Then they brought food for 3 of us at the table and then we waited again for good 15 minutes while they kept on serving others. First 3 were almost done when the food for the rest of us arrived. Very strange considering they were not bringing anything hot and could have waited to bring everyone's food together. The second thing which was quite disturbing was a peculiar odor which we smelled as soon as we entered. It almost smelled like Sewer gas and was not coming from the bathrooms (we checked). I asked the server and he said that no one has complained and he can't smell it and it must be the air fresheners. LOL. They had lots of air fresheners and even an air purifier running. I am surprised that no one has mentioned this in their reviews. Wonder if they have a floor drain at the bar??? This needs to be investigated. read more

Ginza, is this you?? Ok there is Ginza Japanese Restaurant on San Felipe that I often frequented over the years so I come to know their menu pretty well. The Ginza on San Felipe now has a new menu/vibe/interior/people and it's nothing like before or what made it beloved before. Then I come across a Ginza in ... Cypress! and many of the dishes & menu items are here. Hmm... what's going on. Cypress is way too far for me to trot out there and do a more thorough investigation into the matter (i.e. dine there and check out their menu). Though I will keep them in mind if I am ever in the area and if it is our beloved old Ginza from San Felipe then Cypress has gotten themselves a gem. read more

This is definitely our go-to spot for sushi when we're craving it and looking to have a casual night out! The staff has always been friendly when we walk in and the food is always fresh! We get our usual appetizers... edamame (which tastes oh-so-delicious), beef nagimaki (made with asparagus), and age tofu. We always keep a menu with us after we order because... well... we order more than one plate my husband isn't a seafood fan, but that's ok since they have vegetarian options that he can have and still have the "sushi" experience. Who would have thought that avocado and peanuts belong on a roll! These guys did and... well... YUM! We have yet to find a roll that we don't like! The portion size is generous, pretty on par with most restaurants and the prices aren't bad. It's not cheap by any means, but you do get what you pay for! Pending on what we order, we can usually walk away with a $90 tab and that includes a tip. That's also after we've ordered two or three appetizers, and about 6-7 plates of sushi. Overall, not bad... I mean... it's not a value menu tab, but it's also not a break the bank tab either. Like other reviews have mentioned, this is a BYOB establishment, and they do not charge you a cork fee. They will provide wine glasses and a bottle opener for you, so bring your favorite bottle of wine and relax a bit! I am not sure if they are offering the loyalty program to new customers, but we still had ours when they first opened. Bought my 5 year old his favorite unagi nigiri sushi $24 ($3 each). He could only eat one and told me it didn't taste like it usually does. My new go to Sushi spot. Summer roll and Ginza roll were. Spot on, fresh with great texture and sauce accent. A big surprise was the Spicy Miso Ramen bowl. Could have been a meal. My daughter and I tried this place out tonight. I will say that neither of us eat sushi. We were going for Hibachi type food...Miso Soup, Salad, Chicken and fried rice. We got edamame and spring rolls to start, the Pepper Chicken under Hibachi and an extra Miso soup. Our soups and salad came out first. Both were just ok. The edamame and the spring rolls were tasty but that's where it all stopped. The pepper chicken was disgusting. They brought out a sizzling plate and poured the veggies, chicken, sauce and a fried egg on it to cook. I had no idea that would happen. No one explained the dish to me. Why would I think it would come like this? It tasted like straight black pepper (Yes, I understand that is the name of the dish but I thought it might have some other heat and flavors). There was a funny taste that I can't describe as well. My daughter could barely eat a piece of chicken. The veggies and fried rice were just as bad. I tried to cover up the taste by adding soy sauce and sriracha but I couldn't do it. They never came to check on us after we got our main course. They never refilled my water so I had to drink my daughter's. When they came to take our plates and asked how we liked it, I told her we didn't. We didn't want to take it to go either. She asked if she could get us anything else instead but I declined. Then the bill came. There was no discount. I explained how we didn't eat much of it at all bc it tasted so bad and they agreed to cut the price of the main dish by 50%. I was also told to try the chicken and shrimp or beef bc it isn't Pepper Chicken. It is a different sauce...a better sauce. She said she was busy and couldn't take our order or she would have explained the dish better. She also told me to let them know that I didn't like it right away so they could get me something else. It's hard to tell them if they don't come and check on you. I was really hoping it would be great so my husband can get sushi and I can get hibachi. I am very disappointed in this restaurant, the sushi especially. I ordered five rolls as a lunch combo and shared with my daughter; the spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, salmon avocado, Philadelphia, and the yellowtail jalapeño. In all of these rolls there was no flavor, not attraction, and no texture. The yellowtail roll gave me the impression of eating wet cat food. Adjoining these rolls was a house salad and a small bowl of miso soup, they were hardly a redemption. I left the restaurant with a sour taste in my mouth. Fortunately, I did not pay much for these rolls as they were a lunch combo. However, I still feel that I have waisted my money, I regret dining here. While I was disappointed to discover that this restaurant did not take the restaurant.com certificate that I paid for, the lunch specials were reasonably priced for the quality received. My wife had the Naruto roll ($11.95), which was a selection of fresh, raw fish within a cucumber instead of seaweed. You can immediately tell the fish was fresh. I simply smelled the roll before putting it in my mouth. (Fresh sushi should not smell fishy, and it should not have a grainy texture). Definately a new way to eat maki sushi. I ordered the 3 sushi roll combination ($11.95 for 3 rolls of more traditional 6 piece combinations- I had the yellowtail, eel and cucumber, and a tempura shrimp roll). The yellowtail roll had good color (a beige [not all pink] indicating there was some of the favored belly meat) and was very fresh. The other two rolls were cooked, but was well-made. Having read the many reviews for this place and noticing a lot of those who review actually tried non-roll dishes (nigiri and sashimi-style) I'd been eager to try Ginza out. The previous ownership was forgettable food; this is definitely not the case with Ginza. They've completely redone the interior and it's clean and sleek. The booths are high back, which makes it a nice and private dining experience. The bar has seating as well, should you want to see at the bar and watch them make your food. The menu, while having its share of obligatory rolls on hand, is more diverse in terms of food options than most of the heavily-Americanized Chinese-Japanese mish-mash in the area. What surprises me most is their selections of fish for nigiri and sashimi dishes; there was the typical assortment of salmon and tuna, but other items such as flounder and abalone were available at the time. I tried the sashimi style mackerel, squid, flounder, ocean trout and sea clam with a complimentary abalone from the gentleman who served us. Everything was delicious; the fish didn't have a tough or fishy aftertaste. The squid, usually the tell-tale for good-or-bad sashimi for me, was a nice, creamy texture; there wasn't a snap or crunch in the initial bite, and it left a very nice mouthfeel and had no offensive aftertaste. The gentleman who served us, who I presume may have been the owner, let me sample their house sushi rice, which uses actual sushi style rice and is made with vinegar. I was pleasantly surprised by this and the rice was lovely. My husband got the vegetarian sweet potato roll, and while I usually shy away from rolls it was nice to see such an option was available beyond "asparagus roll" or "cucumber roll." The one piece I had wasn't bad, either. Overall I am very happy to see that this side of northwest Houston finally has a good sushi option beyond Matsu, whose quality is "OK" at best. If the owners maintain a pride in fresh and quality ingredients I will gladly continue to support them. read more

Finally a sushi bar in Cypress that sells more than California Rolls. When the owner of Sushi Grill retired, the new owner Ken reopened it. While they still can't have liquor they have some excellent melt in your mouth food geek opportunities. My first visit, I had a basic Chirashi and the food was great...fresh and uniquely presented. They even surprised me with some fresh King Crab sashimi. Here are a couple Chef dishes I had tonight: Very lightly seared yellow tail sashimi with micro greens and truffle oil...this was a great, very clean flavor! A sweet shrimp with Salmon Roe and diced tuna sashimi...and my god, the shrimp head was quartered instead of whole and was flash fried with fresh grated wasabi! We can't let this place close... If you really like sushi, bring a bottle and support Ken and the gang! read more

I don't usually leave a review but almost feel guilty if I don't make time for Ginza, a hidden sushi gem off of Grant Road out of all places. Living in northwest Houston, finding a decent restaurant is like hitting the lotto. So I was surprisingly please and shocked after dining at Ginza. Fish here are fresh and can compete with any of the go-to reasonable price sushi restaurants in the loop. The only difference to those other establishments is the value to freshness ratio and Ginza beats them all. Come here enough and you might even be treated to their off menu which is a huge treat. What shines here are the specialty rolls, hand rolls and any of their fish of the day. For guests who don't care for fish, their beef teriyaki is a solid dish both in terms of flavor and texture. Every dish came with a presentation you only expect at sushi restaurants that commands a much higher price tag and wait. To boot, it's a BYOB establishment. Hate to see how busy this place will be once words get around but for now, we will be coming every week and it deserves all five stars in my book and I've been to many sushi restaurants from west to east coast. read more

We came on a Friday afternoon around 3 PM because our regular sushi joint was closed until 4. There was no one else but us, so I'd be lying if I said they weren't super attentive to us, haha. First off, my boyfriend and I love trying new sushi places, but the hard part is always finding a sushi place that gives reasonable sizes, prices, and good taste. The lunch special (11:00 am - 3:30 pm on weekdays) was good. We got 3 regular rolls for the price of $12 (Escolar avocado, spicy tuna, and spicy yellow tail with 8 small pieces each). I don't know if it was just this visit, but the spicy tuna and yellow tail had a little crunch to it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend this if you're trying to save money, but still looking for enjoyable food. We also got two special rolls: the sweetheart and the firecracker. These were on the pricier side, especially for (what I think) a small portion size. We may just be spoiled with our regular joint, so I'll say that with a grain of salt. They looked very appetizing, and you can tell they spent a lot of time with the aesthetics. I highly recommend the sweetheart if you're a fan of tuna, especially as it comes shaped as cute little upside down hearts. They're also doing a promotion that for every $300 you spend, you will receive a $30 gift certificate (punch card that is punched for every $30, so you don't have to do it in one visit). I don't know if I'll be spending that much, but if you come every once a while, it's a nice incentive. Overall, good atmosphere, attentive waitress (but I can't really accurately judge that since it was empty), good food. Decent prices, but catch it during lunch specials if you're feeling basic. I love that this place is clean and the sushi is so fresh. I am so happy to have found a good sushi place so close to home. Ordered the Chirashi, so delicious! My son is a picky eater, but absolutely loved the shrimp tempura and dipping sauce. The staff is very attentive, but perhaps sometimes too much so. When we went, there were only two other tables and the servers kept staring at the tables ready to anticipate and react to every need. Since I abandoned Matsu in protest I have been waiting for a real sushi bar to appear within 15 minutes of my house. Lo and behold Ginza! I came here for dinner with my boyfriend on a calm night. Staff were nice and the place looked nice and was clean; definitely good for a quiet date night. We got a few rolls, but I LOVED the Honey Sandwich Roll! It's not your typical sushi roll; it's not rolled for one, it's layered then cut into little bite-sized "sandwich" triangles. I don't remember what else I had there, the Honey Sandwich Roll was what stuff on my mind! But I do remember I also go something with a mango sauce topping and was somewhat disappointed because it was more of a mango syrup sauce, but it still tasted good.
