I always forget about this sushi place out on Forest Ave but I finally stopped to try it. It had some good things and some mediocre things. The staff were friendly and they brought out the food quick(it wasn't busy though). I got the pork dumplings and honestly they weren't great, I have got grocery store ones better. The edamame was also just okay. I got the spicy crunch tuna roll, this was pretty good with the tuna tasting fresh and they put crunchy crumbles on top. My friend got the teriyaki chicken and the sauce was good and the chicken was tender. They do have a large menu with lots of options. With lots of sushi options around I probably will not be back to this one. read more

I'm one of those people who is extremely picky about their sushi - annoyingly so. This is my go to restaurant when I want sushi. It is SO good. The customer service is fantastic here, and here's an example: the drunken noodle is not normally prepared with udon noodles. I mentioned that I was torn on what to order because I was craving an udon dish, but I was also very interested in the drunken noodles. I was instantly offered drunken noodles made with udon. I was incredibly impressed. Side note, it was amazing. Also great crab Rangoon and gyoza. Definitely recommend Ginza Town! A restaurant that really proves they are there to make their customers happy, and you can tell that their food is made by people with a passion for food! read more

Really tasty food, and very nice owners, but the wait time was pretty long for sit-down service -- around 40 minutes. The sushi was excellent when it did arrive, though!! One of our favorite sushi takeout places while in Portland. They don't have dine in right now. We got the 12 piece and tarantula roll. We really liked the tarantula roll which had a fantastic mix of flavors and didn't skimp on the ingredients. One thing to note is they went a little heavy on the wasabi when making the nigiri pieces. Ginza Town has had one of the best happy hour deals in the area for quite awhile. Recently, the prices went up a bit and the options got a bit more limited, but I would still recommend checking it out. Their happy hour runs M-F from 4-7. There are a bunch of app choices like gyoza and crab rangoons for $3.75. There is also a list of maki rolls and some sushi for the same price. Any 12oz beer off the menu is also $3.75. The place is not usually too crowded and the atmosphere is pleasant enough. The staff is attentive and there is usually parking. Hm...then why three instead of four stars??? I guess because while I think GT has solid fare at reasonable prices, they are not a place I think of as doing anything exceptional that sets them apart from other sushi spots in town. read more

I've only been here twice so far, both times for takeout, but both experiences have been stellar! I ordered some sushi and crab rangoons the first time around, and I had a drink at the bar while waiting. Drink was perfect. Atmosphere is relaxed. The sushi chef talked to me while I was hanging out at the bar, made me feel comfortable, as did the waitresses who were on that night as well. They were all super friendly and attentive. Second time I got Beef Sukiyaki for lunch takeout. OH MY GOD. The broth in this dish was amazinnnnnnng. I would have taken an entire bowl of the broth with nothing in it, it's that good. But with the addition of the tofu, veggies, beef, and nooldes, this dish is out of this world. I will DEFINITELY be ordering this again. Overall great little sushi joint. Pricing is pretty on par with other restaurants of similar quality (not super cheap, but not super expensive). What I really like about this place is how close it is to my house and the fact that I don't have to go downtown to get sushi unless I really want to. The parking situation could be a little better (there are only a few spots and these are shared with Papa Johns), but really other than that I have no complaints. Last night a few friends and I had a couple of beers and, of course, had an irresistible urge to sing karaoke. A google search brought up Ginza Town. After much head scratching about what a Ginza is (a district in Tokyo), we called around 9 pm. The woman who answered said that they close at 10 but would stay open for us. Perfect! Ginza Town is next to Papa Johns on Forest Ave, not far from the Samuels area. It's one of those places you drive by hundreds of times and never know exist. We got there around 9:15 on a Friday and there was one other large party celebrating a birthday. The owner also was celebrating his birthday and joined the other party. He didn't speak English but brought us a free bottle of Sake. I loved this place already. Ginza Town for me is "Bubba's Awesome." Meaning it's probably terrible but I love it. [4/2/16 Edit: the food rocks! Nothing is terrible about this place at all!] Wireless mics are hooked up to a decent sound system and a flat screen tv. They play karaoke from Youtube, which sounds like it would be awful but worked extraordinarily well. Before long we were best friends with the large party, belting cheesy 80s ballads while chugging $3.75 containers of Sake. Considering each one held 3.5 Sake shots, it's a killer value. We had already eaten, but the other party must have had the entire menu brought on platters to their table. It looked and smelled amazing and I was able to try the chicken wings and duck breast. Very tasty. I will definitely be coming back for food. So, awesome karaoke in an Asian restaurant/bar with dirt cheap Sake on Forest Ave? BUMMER!! When Ginza first opened, I was super excited that a sushi joint was opening in my area of town, with parking! They boasted a cheap happy hour and I used to come with friends all of the time. Service was slow but the prices were reasonable so I never complained. Fast forward to the past couple months: Every time I order take out, I show up a few minutes after the time it's supposed to be ready, and it's never ready. I always end up waiting 5-10 minutes and surprised at how expensive a couple of rolls cost me. Speaking of ambiance, (and I'm all for family run businesses), every time I've come here the owners 2-3 year old daughter plays by herself on the restaurant floor all day/night. Cute as she is, if you're on a date night and there is a toddler grabbing at your skirt and taking turns going around to every patron in the restaurant, not everyone is going to appreciate that. Now, what happened on my most recent visit a couple weeks ago is why I'll never return to Ginza. The once cheap happy hour is no more, they upped the prices significantly to where you don't feel like you're getting a deal anymore. It's rather expensive and the ambiance isn't anything special, you don't feel like you're getting the experience that you're paying for. We ordered some drinks, appetizers, sushi, and rolls. Mind you that us 2 and 1 older gentlemen were the only people in the restaurant at the time and service was extremely slow and we were getting agitated to get out of there, we sat for about 20 minutes after we were finished eating just to get the check. We watched the owners child crawl all over the floor and then all over the bar, then her grandmother who was babysitting her I guess while at the restaurant grabbed some whipped cream from the bar and sprayed it directly into the child's mouth 7-8 times. Bill was $70 something and we left a %15 percent tip. After filling out the receipt we got out and were putting our jackets on. The waitress came over to out table, looked at the receipt, then states "no you tip more". I said "what"?, and she repeats that we need to tip her more than the %15. I was so taken aback by her rudeness and her holding the receipt up to my face that I just grabbed it and tipped more, but reflecting back on it I shouldn't have based on the shitty service all night. However, neither of us will never return to Ginza and I was a pretty frequent diner who brought a lot of new people into the restaurant. read more

I was conflicted between choosing between my go to sushi spot or trying out Ginza Town for the first time. My boyfriend and I decided on Ginza, and I think we found our new cheap sushi place. We came around lunch time on a Wednesday and was told that we could choose where we'd like to sit. The waitress gave us a menu and brought out waters immediately. The menu selection is pretty big ranging from Vietnamese pho, hot pot, and sushi. My boyfriend got the bento box lunch special with beef teriyaki, gyoza, wakame (seaweed salad), and a spicy tuna roll. I decided on the 3 deluxe sushi rolls with a spicy crunchy tuna, an eel, and a spicy crunchy scallop. As we waited for the food to come out, we saw that they have happy hours from 3:30-6. Was kind of disappointed when we found out they only have it on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesday evenings :/ The food came out pretty quickly since there was only one other group besides us. (Each of our meals also came with miso soups)My boyfriend absolutely loved his bento box. The gyozas were pretty standard but yummy, and, although he didn't like it, I loved the seaweed salad. The tuna didn't seem that fresh if I'm going to be completely honest... it had a greyish tint to it and wasn't that pink/red. The eel roll was yummy, but what will have me coming back will be the spicy crunchy scallop. This was mine and my boyfriend's favorite part of the whole meal. Each roll came with 8 pieces, and they filled me up. We were both stuffed by the end of it. Wish they'd offer happy hour a on Thursdays as well but I'll have to come back another time to get some of the shumai and crap ragoons. Update: I feel like every time I come here there's something that always pops up that kind of gives me a "hmmm" thought... Since quarantine, this has been one of the only sushi spots (that I usually eat at) that's still doing take out. I typically get the deluxe three roll combo lunch deal with two spicy crunchy scallops and a spicy crunchy tuna roll. What I like about this place that stands out from other sushi spots is that Ginza has 8 pieces in each roll opposed to 6 (which is the typical size of a majority of other restaurants), so I feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck. I love eating tuna rolls (they're my favorite), but there is something off with the tuna rolls here, and I feel that it is not as fresh as other spots in Portland. I now get two spicy crunchy scallops and one eel roll in the three roll combo for $12 and change, and it never fails to be delicious! I don't know what it is about their scallop rolls, but it always has me coming back for more. I love the crunchy bits in the rolls, and the spicy mayo always sends me to another universe. For $12?? Decided to meet an old friend at Find a Town for a bite to eat before he left town. We both ordered a Bento Box, the one with grilled salmon and shrimp tempura. Ever have one of those experiences that are super uncomfortable and awkward in the moment, but eventually they become inside jokes to you and whomever you shared it with? That's how my relationship with Ginza Town started. We first came because of the awesome Happy Hour specials. Every local knows that they were one of the best for cheap rolls during awesome hours when people actually want to get happy. However, the first time we came the prices had gone up enough that it didn't really feel like we were getting any sort of deal. Not the end of the world, but definitely not the bargain (or draw) it used to be. The sushi itself is good; it gets the job done. We've had the kappa, avocado, avocado cucumber, avocado and mango, shiitake, veggie, shinko, futo maki, and sweet potato. I don't know that it's tastier than what I get at Whole Foods, but I appreciate the quantity of vegetarian options! The staff, for me, is the biggest bummer. They're super nice, don't get me wrong, but: 1. Regardless of how busy they are, we always seem forgotten about. Usually it happens after being seated and before getting any sort of water - twenty or thirty minutes will go by with no sort of interaction. 2. That memorable incident I alluded to initially? The first time I came, my dining partner and I wanted to split a large scorpion bowl. The lady taking our order very loudly and repeatedly made us feel badly for wanting to order it. She kept trying to tell us that it was too much for two people, and insisted we order something else. I don't really get it, since there was a couple behind us drinking the same thing. In the end - after much back and forth with her about it - we got what we wanted, although it tasted almost entirely of fruit juice. Your one stop place for sushi, bento box and hot pot. Very clean and nice. Also quite not a lot of people. Came during happy hour so we had sushi (6 pieces) for $3.75, appetizers and sashimi. I had the mango and avocado sushi. This has become new non seafood sushi and I love it. Avocado was creamy and mango was a tad sweet but it worked perfectly. I also had the spicy tuna which was prepared differently than what I am used to. It's pieces of tuna with a bit of wasabi and spicy mayo. It was really good. OH MY GOD, YOU GUYS. I am in Asian potbelly, full stomach heaven. My Asian BFF has been talking about this place for weeks and finally we were able to coordinate a time to go. First of all, the décor is significantly better (apparently) than it used to be. I hadn't been here before the remodel, but now it is clean (including the bathrooms!!!!!!!) and bright and open! The service is friendly. It's a family place and it is REAL sushi, so it's not McDonald's fast, but it's pretty speedy overall depending on how busy it is. It is clear it's a family restaurant and everyone is SO nice. THIS IS THE BEST SUSHI I HAVE EVER HAD!!! In previous Yelp reviews, I have bemoaned the fact that there are very few (if any) authentic places. I mean, clearly this place has made me a liar. Amazing sushi. AMAZING. Came here and had a great time with some friends for a birthday. I had been here once before and was pleasantly surprised by the changes they had made to the logo, the atmosphere, and the presentation of the food. They had an amazingly large list for $3.00 happy hour rolls and apps... AND happy hour went to 7:30?! This is revolutionary in Portland! I don't know anywhere that has 7:30 Happy Hour! They also had a scorpion bowl for $10 and $15 a large (the small bowl was plenty of booze for two). All of our sushi was tasty, we loved the mango avocado roll and the wasabi shumai. I would definitely come back here again for sushi and the amazing happy hour that I might deem as the new "Best Happy Hour in Portland". read more

My friend and I were debating between OTTO and Ginza as the two were close by each other, and I was happy in my choice to go to Ginza. I got sweet potato sushi, which was fried tempura-style sweet potato drizzled with what looked like soy sauce. It was good and thankfully the sweet potato was cooked properly. I have found other places have tough sweet potato with a raw crunch. I prefer soft and cooked, and Ginza delivered just that. My friend got a chicken teriyaki and rice plate with a side salad. I tried the salad on her plate and liked the dressing a lot. She seemed to like her chicken tempura roll. There were mix ups throughout the meal, like getting chicken tempura for my main dish, while having requested vegetable. I found this out in an unfortunate bite which, from first taste, which was not right. The waiter was extremely kind and apologetic and quickly fixed it, and he was attentive throughout. Later on, when accidentally given green tea sundae instead of tempura green tea ice cream, my friend was told to keep both as an apology, the chef even later coming out to apologize. The staff was kind and I appreciate the good service and food. I make a million mistakes a day, so the mix ups were insignificant and instead showed me how amazing the staff was. It's funny, downtown Portland has all these sought after dining spots, and sure the Miyakes are something special, but then just outside town this little strip of Forest Avenue has become the Asian Alley. Two Vietnamese restaurants, Mekong Thai, some new Thai place called Essan or something (not to mention that amazing Iraqi bread place!!), and the recently discovered (to me), Ginza Town. I have zero clue how long it's been there, nestled next to Papa Johns, but I'm willing to bet I drove by a few dozen times without ever thinking much of it. Finally something clicked, I looked it up on here and found that not only did it get great reviews, but they had a great happy hour too. I must not have been the only one figuring this out as their happy hour prices recently went up. The prices before were legendary, maybe borderline insane, so it's not entirely surprising they went up a little. Now they're more comparable to Kon's happy hour. I'm pretty sure at Ginza Town it's every day of the week and goes until 7:30, which is pretty sweet. Thankfully the prices aren't the only thing making this place worth it; the sushi and rolls are delicious. We had previously stuck with the ones featured on happy hour, which were really fresh (the pretty lady accompanying me eats much more sushi than I do and called it some of the best she had had in Maine). This last time we also tried the special roll, the Tuna Toro (I believe... tuna belly), and holy sweet mother of Tokyo, was it good. Photo posted here, but a pretty beautiful arrangement as well. As you can probably tell from the photos, it's a singular room and their super adorable child or grandchild is running around and playing with dinosaurs and things (at least at the early hours we've been there) so maybe not romantic, but who cares when the food is this good. And did I mention the kid is really cute? So the legendary happy hour is seemingly gone, but for the quality of the food, it's well worth those current happy hour prices and then some (and until 7:30!!!). Maybe use that as your springboard, but definitely try some of the other offerings. Personally, I can't wait to see what's going on with those hotpots (sorry, Thanh Thanh 2). read more

I've been to Ginza town twice now and its been a good experience each time. I wouldn't say its been amazing or atrocious, just dead center OK. Each time I'm there I'm easily outnumbered by the fish in their fish tanks, I don't know why no one is ever in there. The first time I was there another patron told me that the place was his favorite so I take that as encouraging news. The wait staff there are quite nice and when I ordered the lunch roll special to go they gave me some free miso which is always appreciated. So as for the sushi, I ordered their lunch special (see photo) which ended up being a TON of food. I could have used a little bit more fish inside the roll instead of the copious amounts of rice. For some reason they were cut in some weird angle which made them a little difficult to eat but didn't affect how delish they were. In my opinion it's got to be hard to get sushi wrong in this city given we are about 2 seconds from the ocean. I guess I expected a bit more 'stuff' in them, but they were fresh and there was a lot of food in the special so it kind of evened itself out in the end. Pretty much the definition of 3 stars for me. Prices were reasonable and service was fast. It didn't leave me craving a meal from there like I do w/ so many other forrest ave places but I'll continue to go here when I do want sushi. read more

Once I asked for I wanted, The Christmas roll, I asked for no tuna. I figured the server, regular white English speaking girl understood my order, so could not be lost in translation. My roll not only had tuna on it, also included spicy mayo which was not listed on menu. So I sit here typing this review with a mouth on fire... Ginza Town isn't the best sushi roll in town, but it is by far one of the best values in town. Each roll has 8 pieces, and the rolls are definitely bigger than most. The rice to fish ratio is pretty good, they don't skimp on the fish by any means, but personally I would prefer a little less rice as they use quite a bit. The fish is always fresh and I've never been disappointed with an order here. If I'm looking to have a sit down dinner, Ginza would not be my go to. However, when I'm looking for a lunch special, Ginza is almost always my go to. The Three Roll Deluxe sushi lunch special is a steal at $11.50. If you're looking for an amazing lunch time value while not compromising on freshness and taste, Ginza is the place for you. read more

Needed a feel for some Asian food for tonight so I decided to check out Ginza Town, right in Portland. Getting here for me was just less than a mile from school, so if you're a student at the nearest schools in town, just walk! :) First things first! the outside is an alright view. You will see traffic, papa johns, and some other food places right down the street (I forgot which ones). Anyways, plenty of parking here and again its a walk distance for some of these houses here. Going inside there were plenty of workers and at 4 to 5 pm. Not sure if it gets busier here at the evening portion or on the weekends, so just be aware :). Coming into the restaurant, you have this nice atmosphere filled with tables, a sushi bar, restrooms and television! Three girl servers were there and all of them give great service. There is a happy hour from 330pm to 730pm, not sure its everyday though. Make sure you ask! However, They have a range of different entrees like bento boxes, hot pot,, sushi, appetizers etc. I got the Caterpillar Roll and Bento Box. A little pricey on the sushi and a little small size, but it was enough for me to get full. Altogether I paid about $29.00. So, yeah just on the pricey side. Altogether great service, good food, Very clean and I will come back in the meantime to try their hotpot. :) However, the food could be a little cheaper, as I have had better that included the lowered price. When Ginza Town first opened I felt they were a nice alternative to the higher priced, more trendy Japanese restaurants located downtown given the fact they were in a mall strip mall on outer Forest Avenue. Then, their prices were reasonable, however I dined there for the second time last month noticing their prices had increased and I wondered why. Still, I'd give Ginza Town an okay rating as their sushi is fresh, well made and appetizing. Typically, Giza Town is pretty quiet and I've always had decent service. Noooooo I want so badly to jump on the happy train and give this place a great rating but I just can't!! The takeout I ordered was so badly botched and the unprofessionalism so rampant I just can't even!!! Here's the order of events: 6:00 pm - place takeout order for two bento boxes. They say 35-40 minutes. 6:45 pm - arrive at Ginza Town for order. I give the name. No one knows what I'm talking about so I look at all the takeout orders placed in the last 30 minutes to locate mine. After realizing that the name on the order was indeed correct, it needs a few more minutes and I'm encouraged to sit down. 6:50 pm - another lady comes in and her order is ready. She takes it and leaves. 6:55 pm - I witness a fight between the head sushi chef and who I presume is a trainee. Then the waitress who tried to get my order is asking "this other lady is waiting for two bento boxes. did you lose that order too?" 7:00 pm - I twiddle my thumbs anxiously. 7:05 pm - I finally receive my order from someone in the kitchen who weirdly, albeitly cutely, explains that the soups are not packed well and will (probably) spill. OKAY. I will go back, the food was fine. But don't bother with takeout from this place, they are sooooo discombobulated. read more
