We went to this restaurant with my boyfriend, and we had a very uncomfortable experience. During a previous visit, we didn't leave a tip, as it's not always possible for us, and this time we were asked why we hadn't tipped. We felt that this was inappropriate and unprofessional. The waitress was also quite unfriendly throughout the service, and the situation made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We understand that tipping is important, but it should be voluntary and not something customers feel pressured about. Very excited. My last day in the hospital. Going home tomorrow. I love exploring different restaurants In Portland using delivery services. My review after lunch will speak volumes. I had a V11 noodle dish with shrimp & beef & fried wrapped shrimp appetizer. The portion was very good however the beef was not velveted & was somewhat chewy. Only 2 measly sized shrimp in the dish. The side of sauce was very good m. I was disappointed in the quantity & they had no flavor. The dish had no mint or basil & I think I tasted one single peanut. This dish was not like the Thai beef bee bong dish I have at Apsara restaurant on public st in Providence R.I. There dish has mega amounts of bean sprouts,basil, coconut cream among other items & a full sized fried spring roll. Adding in chili paste & siracha make this my go to meal whenever I get to RI. I suggest the owners of veranda house take a trip to Apsara & try out their version as well as the extensive menu to see what real asian food should be like. Love love love this spot! This is my typical go to place for Pho at a good price! I've been to this location probably 6-7 times now and everytime I've went I had a good experience. Service has always been quick and nice. I've had other dishes here before such as the Rangoons, which are also delicious. However, I highly recommend this place if you want Pho to warm yourself up on a cold night! I typically order the House XL because I prefer more portions. It comes with a variety of meats. We came for dinner and we're surprise on how delicious the food was. Service was mediocre, but there was one lady for the whole front of the store and taking phone/take out orders. We still did not feel like we were lacking anything. When the food came out, it was hot and delicious. I got the vegetable lo mein and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. Seems like they struggle hard. The hostess was running around like a mess and telling customers she was stressed and acting it. Was not packed at all. The kitchen messed up our order twice. Skipped giving us a side and gave a vegetarian in our group beef phở. Actually overheard another party complain that they didn't get the right order either. 2 phở and 2 pad thai took 48 minutes. It's been a few years since I came. My memories of the place were positive and I could not wait to return. I brought my mom and a friend for a bowl of pho and a hot tea on a gloomy afternoon. My guests ordered rare steak and meatball pho. The steak and meatballs were inedible. Boiled to the consistency of shoe leather and with the flavor of what I imagine cat food would taste like, both of my guests removed all of the meat from their bowls. Rare steak? I'm not sure it was even beef- we honestly couldn't tell. Yes, that bad. The pho broth lacked any real depth of flavor. Basically watery broth over noodles. I had the vegetable pho which was the same, only without the boiled-beyond-recognition-meat. I tried a bite of a meatball and had to spit it out. I wish I were kidding. Tea was barely warm. I am always sad when I have a review like this in my head. I love supporting local restaurants and this one has the perfect location with some parking available. The egg rolls were good and pipping hot just like I like them. The shrimp spring roll were gigantic and fresh but mostly filled with lettuce. Nevertheless a good appetizer. The pho here is something I would not eat here again. The broth was flavorless and so watered down . Their siracha was watered down . Not sure why but it is. First time I didn't finish my bowl of pho. The steak was over cooked so it was tough to chew. Overall I may come back to try other stuff on the menu but not the beef soup. read more

The food is very good, we ordered the steak pho which came as a very generous portion with all the fixings for $14. The service was good, there was only one lady doing front of house service but she was attentive and kept our water glasses full. In a word: Outstanding! I took my sweetheart here for her birthday and I'm so glad I did and she is too! It was a quiet Tuesday night and we had our choice of seats. She likes the window seats so, that is where we headed. We had been here before but it had been a couple of years. I forgot how big the servings are, especially the soup! What...happened? Recent takeout orders have been "meh" and we decided to give it a final chance. Like many other places, if you don't eat it served in restaurant, it isn't especially worth the trip. The chicken teriyaki tasted like satay and nothing like teriyaki. Even then the flavour was dull at best. The crispy wontons were very crisp, but not as tasty as previous orders. My wife's duck noodle soup was trully subpar. The meat was mostly cartilage and fat. The broth had no real flavour. My noodle salad (V13) is a travesty compared to every other one I got from here prior...which is well more than a dozen. The noodles are raw. The chicken is most definitely the same as the satay and had much too much fat and chew. If we can ever eat in again, maybe, but otherwise I think we are done here. read more

A fellow Yelper, Kerrie D, introduced me to the joy the is Bun Vermicelli. It's a bowl full of vermicelli rice noodles, with lettuce, cucumber, mint, and a topping of your choice, be it egg rolls, shrimp, steak, etc. then comes the little bowl of a sweet and sour sauce, much thinner than what you would dip in. Pour it over, stir with the chopsticks, and BAM! You've got magic. It's filling, yet light, without broth to weigh you down. It's now one of those dishes that pops into my mind when I'm asked "do you have a craving for dinner?" I've been to almost ever other Veranda location in the area, and I believe the noodle house was the second restaurant of their many expansions. It's cozy, with what looks like that traditional Thai wooden structures as decoration inside. Definitely the big brother to the little, original, spot across the street. Neither is glamorous, but both make a killer veggie spring roll. But when you go, please try that Bun Vermicelli. read more

Stopped in for lunch today because I love soups and Asian food. Ordered the rare sliced beef Pho and other than the fact that the beef was actually cooked into to shoe leather, the broth was tasty. I am grateful to have a sit down meal during Covid but I am really upset at having the menu list the price for a dish, but being charged a higher price. We've been here before and it was good enough to try it again. This time was a mixed bag. The chow fun (foon) was very good with the noodles having that wok seasoned taste. The pho on the other hand was just ok. The soup broth and noodles were fine, but the meatballs were the worst I've ever had in a pho soup. When the soup came the meatballs were still cold in the middle, like they didn't give them enough time to defrost in the soup. I let them sit in the hot broth for a while and they warmed up in the middle. However, the texture was awful. Now pho meatballs have always had a a mystery meat sort of texture, but these has gristle and bone pieces mixed in. The meatballs were like rubber with bits of hard bone and other "parts" that couldn't be chewed and needed to be split into the napkin. The sliced steak was tough like leather with ribbons of gristle all through them. Finally, there is a blonde-haired waitress there who is very rude. My wife remembered that she had an attitude the first time we were there. This time she was no different. She has an attitude problem and was very short with us when we were asking a simple question about a menu item. The people next to us had been waiting a long time for their food, and when they mentioned something, she doubled down and gave them a nasty response. This waitress needs to change her attitude or go work for the Division of Motor Vehicles or something. She got a poor tip for poor service. I hope the people next to us left her nothing. Anyway, if your looking for better food, including pho, go to the Sun Vietnamese restaurant on Forrest ave. Not as fancy inside as a restaurant, more of a take out place with some tables, but much better food and service. Try their fried rice and banh mi sandwiches too. read more

Probably some of the best Pho in Portland. This goes above any previous reviews of other places, no joke. I had been wanting to check this place out for a while to get some dry noodle and boy did I get some dry noodle! They have their own parking lot so make sure you're in there instead of the auto shop next door. Going in, the interior looks like a typical Vietnamese place in Portland. There were people who came in confusing them with the Thai place across the street, though I think they're owned by the same owner. There are tables and a bar and they venture outwards in the crew hiring they do. The menu is like most Vietnamese pho places, and what can I say, the prices are about the same too. But their food is good. The SO ordered a duck noodle soup and I ordered a dry noodle and both were delish in their own right. We even made the other customers jealous of the food we ordered. I don't normally get apps so no comment on that, but service was quick and pleasant and food was snappy and delicious. I think most Pho places are pretty good so you wont lose out so long as you don't go to one of the meh ones. read more

I have passed this Noodle bar several times over the years and today when my go-to Pho' place was closed decided to give them a try. The menu is easy to read and offers a nice variety of noodle dishes. I ordered the Tai Bo Vien which had a darker broth then I am used too but had a wonderful flavor. This came with the usual things that come with Pho' but what was missing was the chili sauce which is one of my favorite condiment for the soup. Overall, enjoyed the Pho'. I also ordered the fresh spring roll which was disappointing over all. Big and lots of iceberg lettuce, could not taste anything else but the lettuce even though I saw other veggies in it. I will return to explore more options of this local restaurant. read more

I tried Veranda Noodle Bar last night for the first time. I got an appetizer (pork sugarcane) and an entree (Spicy Lemongrass with pork, medium spiciness). First, the good: the pork sugarcane was awesome! It's essentially a meatball on a sugarcane skewer, and comes with a side of sweet & sour sauce, a sauce that's actually a bit sweeter than I expected--which is a good thing in my eyes. Spicy lemongrass had a great scent to it--I could literally smell the lemongrass in it the moment I opened the container! It was cooked perfectly, too: the pork was tender, and the vegetables were both tasty and colorful. On the other hand, while I selected medium spiciness (i.e., two chilies), it felt like an additional level of spice was added because, to my palate, I found that the dish was so spicy that after only a couple of bites I could no longer even detect the taste of the individual ingredients, just heat. (Note to self for next time.) Also, the only utensils I received was a set of chopsticks, which are pretty much useless to me. But, overall it was a pretty good experience and I will definitely be eating there again, albeit a bit less bravely on the spiciness spectrum. :) read more

Ordered takeout and all the food was extremely bland and had minimal vegetables, even after I asked for extra vegetables. This is the second time this has happened with Veranda. The chicken satay had zero seasoning and appeared to have simply been reheated in a microwave. Given all the other options for food in Portland, I give Veranda a hard pass and will no longer order from there. My man has been talking up the Veranda Noodle Bar so much that I was starting to think he was crazy - he works around the corner and goes to both Veranda Thai across the street and the Noodle Bar fairly regularly. So, on a cold day lunch date with the 8 year old, we decided on noodles. By far, the best broth I have ever had. I had the Duck Noodle Soup which came with a big bowl of lovely broth and yellow noodles and a side plate of veggies (bean sprouts, lettuce, jalapeno's, onion) and the man had Pho beef with a similar side plate with lime, etc. He kept exclaiming how happy it was making him. It was enough to eat hearty and share all with the child who loved my duck soup, too, though we did have a yummy crab rangoon appetizer. It was real food made by real people. The price for portion was great and the ambiance is nice (a few steps up from across the street - which I like but ambiance is certainly not the focus there)...I was very pleased to see a few families in for lunch (I love kids that eat Thai!), and a few working men for lunch at the nice little bar to watch a game while eating. It was a Saturday night, and I was suffering from jetlag and an empty refrigerator. Well, actually, there were moldy lemons and a rotten cucumber in the fridge. Alas, I had no idea that such ingredients would prove themselves to be more appetizing than the meal I was about to have. Where to begin? Time was ticking, so I phoned in an order before my options ran out. Let me state very clearly that this was a very sad dinner. "Sad" and "dinner" are two words you never want to hear together. Thus, I treat calories and men the same: if they make me sad, I don't swallow. Anyway, I was quite disappointed at my $30 loss. I would've bought Powerball tickets or 1.5 lap dances if I was looking to build myself up for nothing. The spring rolls tasted gross: 3 spoiled, stuffed schlongs, with chewy foreskin-like wrappers. The steamed wontons were soft, cold, and had a very unpleasant (unfresh like pants after an international flight) flavor as well. Hoping for mouthfuls of happiness, I received only mouthfuls of limp, sogginess instead. The pho had potential, but the raw beef does not make a good delivery food. It looked like flaps of genitalia in my soup, the temperature was not appropriate, and even upon microwaving... it was repulsive. Sorry, but this was simply inedible, and I wouldn't even consent to this if drunk. I give credit to the driver for making a very prompt delivery. However, pleasing a lady is not about speed. We eat here twice a week. We went tonight, there were three other tables, after waiting 1.5 hours I finally went up and asked how much longer for my fried rice. I was told she had no idea and had been fighting with the kitchen to make it. Finally, they brought Out my friends meal, but nobody else's. Everybody around is had been there for twenty minutes and were Eating apps and meals. We finally went up to the register and asked to pay for what we had and the server was so rude saying "what exactly are you taking home and paying for". We said only our drinks - mind you we each got a beer and simple vodka soda. Nothing was comped. We go here twice a week and will not be returning. We ordered sumple items off the menu, we were told it was packed although there was nobody There and we never got our emails after 1.5 hours. read more

I've been here twice, I think the staff are stretched a little thin. But, the drinks are phenomenal and worth the $. I recommend the Mai Tai. I ordered a veggie fried rice and it came with egg. I didn't touch it. The server came, and noticed upon which I ordered another without egg. I hate being that person but, I just DON'T eat egg. I thought she was going to charge me for both because she boxed it for me (the egg rice) even though I said I wouldn't eat it. I am going to preface this that if your establishment sells a fresh version of the deliciousness called Pho, then I am going to give you a good rating just because I am such a fan of the vietnamese cuisine. This establishment also has a lot of other pieces that I really enjoyed here with the windowed seating overlooking Veranda street and the hustle and bustle of the ice cream store right next door and Howie's pub right across the street. It also has a lot of movement from the runners and bikers meandering over from the Back Bay area and their eveing and afternoon workouts. The service here is attentive and very good and the food is always fresh when I have steered away from the heavenly Pho, I have dabbled in the fried rice, the chicken wings and the egg rolls and they have all been very good and tasted fresh. The team is always refilled and water is continuously topped off. The restaurant itself is well kept and it even has a nice and clean bar area with a TV on that takes requests for what you might want to watch. A nice added touch is the fact that they always bring some sliced fresh oranges to cleanse the pallette after eating your asian cuisine. I have never done this before but i will tell you that after a pretty big bowl of Pho, the orange cleaned things right up. The only drawback here was with the Pho with meatballs in the mix. The meatballs were processed and seemed like bland balls of spam and had no flavor or real texture. I will just order the one with the flank and skirt steak with the noodles. I would definitely recommend this restaurant in the hustle and bustle of veranda and Washington Ave ... you should stop in and check out the goods and enjoy some good food. read more

My family in California makes PHO and it's really amazing! I had my doubts that it would come near the PHO I was used to. When it arrived on time I was pleased. My son had ordered it for me because I have had a flu for 10 days and am not eating much. He told them not to cook the noodles(it only takes 2 minutes) and that I may have to warm up the broth. It took 2 minutes to cook the noodles and the broth was piping hot. They sent all the herbs, a lime wedge, hot sauce and Hoisin sauce. He had ordered meatballs and flank steak to go into it. There was enough PHO for 2 people easily (and I eat a lot of it). My first bite tasted just like what my family makes in California. Perfect for a cold rainy night in Maine. I also got crab Rangoon which I ate totally by myself and was stuffed with cream cheese . What a wonderful find in Maine.
