All $7 except $7.50 for Dac Biet

Came here honestly by accident when looking for Duc Huong since they're located so closely, didn't realize until after I already bought the goods and left. Oh wells. Got the combination banh mi (dac biet) and asked for garlic bread instead of regular and extra meat. The nice lady who speaks limited English at the register only charged me a $1 for the extra meat. Quite generous if you look at the photo. There is a buy 4 get 1 free deal just like at Duc Huong. They take Venmo here but I paid in cash and didn't bother to ask if they take credit card since usually small businesses prefer cash anyways. I have to say I couldn't taste any garlic at all, the meats are pretty good and pate is okay. Bread is just okay as well. They also sell cha lua in the leaf wrap if you are into that, they have several options.

I visited the store that Gio Cha Ngon took over a few years ago ever since I was in kindergarten (previously called Thanh Lan). Luckily, that store passed down their recipe for Banh Mi Ga to Gio Cha Ngon and my family has still been going here ever since! Located near Vietnam Town in San Jose, Gio Cha Ngon is located on a quieter corner with a super small parking lot and a busy gas station. They sell various types of Vietnamese cha and banh mi here. Everything is pretty affordable - the women who work here are super kind too! I don't recall if they take card, but I do know that cash is preferred (plus, they also take Venmo!). We always order the classic banh mi ga (chicken banh mi) here since we can't find any other store that sells and makes it as good as they do. I'd recommend asking for all of the vegetables on the side for you to add yourself so that it doesn't get soggy if you don't eat it right away! As another tip: ask for it toasted if you do plan on eating it ASAP. :-)

Banh mi ga cha bong (shredded chicken) with added pate. Generous amount of delicious pate!! Thank you!

New Banh Mi place. Every Banh Mi place has their own specialty sandwich. This case, it's their banh mi ga-- cha bong (shredded chicken) and their pate! I always include pate in all my sandwiches. So far this is the only place that has packed on the pate. Wow! It's also well made and tastes so delightful! Maybe even the best pate I've had. But before making that judgment, I do want to give it a couple more tries to see if they're consistent. And they make cha ga (chicken) as well as cha bo (beef) instead of just pork. I do eat pork, but I try to limit my intake and when I saw that they serve chicken meat I jumped on the opportunity! The batch I bought was a little too salty, but that won't stop me from purchasing more. Just cut a thinner slice eat it with bread or rice. I hope they fix that though, but overall flavor and texture is great. My new go to shredded chicken and pate sandwich joint. So delicious! Glad to support ma and pa shops. :-)

Food was okay. I got their Dac Biet banh mi. The bread and meat was good but I prefer other Vietnamese sandwiches places. I came here and it's decent but not great. Service is good.

Thit nuong banh mi. Barely any meat

I do not recommend coming to this place for banh mi. The bread was stale and there was barely any meat. I ordered thit nuong and it was bland and cold.

The cha Hue is grainy. It seems like they must have used black pepper air dried in VN that's why there are pebbles in cha Hue.

Giò chả are good. It would be better if they are not wrapped with plastic, as plastic is unhealthy when cooked at high temperature.

I was expecting it to be super salty, heavy, and drenched in sauce, but it was actually really balanced and refreshing. The pork was flavorful without being overpowering, and I could distinctly taste the water chestnuts and veggies mixed in, which gave it a nice texture and freshness. It felt comforting without making me feel weighed down. The cold cut combo bahn mi here is seriously bomb. I also really liked the bread ratio--the baguette was the perfect size and didn't overpower the fillings. Some places think bigger bread is better, but it ends up taking away from the inside and makes the sandwich hard to bite into. Here, everything felt balanced, so you actually get the perfect mix of bread, meats, pickled veggies, and sauce in every bite. The cured meats were flavorful without being hella salty too, which made the whole sandwich even better. Def need to come back to try some of their desserts near the middle of the line's counter and in that fridge near the register! _______________________________________________________ --- S E R V I C E --- Service was great too. They handled the rush really well, and the staff still stayed warm and attentive even with how busy it was. When I got to the register, there were other customers trying to ask for extra help after getting their orders--and anyone who grew up around asian "aunties" and "uncles" knows how eager they can get. Instead of brushing me aside to quickly help them first, the cashier politely gestured that they'd assist them after finishing with me. It was a small moment, but I appreciated how respectful and composed they were while juggling everything. _______________________________________________________ --- A M B I A N C E -- To-go vibes for sure! It's a small shop big enough for the line (before it can go out the door), cold drinks and desserts in the fridges, small snacks and plates on your way to the register, and the pick-up window on the outside. Makes sense to just pick up your food and enjoy it in your car or at home because of how busy it can get. Heads up--they definitely have evenings where they clean-up and lock the door minutes for closing. Do make time to come before then to secure food!

From the moment we walked in, it was clear this place is struggling. The fridge by the entrance looked unkempt, the kitchen felt more like a cramped kitchenette than a professional setup, and the dining area was completely chaotic. The tables and chairs piled up everywhere with absolutely no place to sit. The food only confirmed my suspicions. Their pork tasted like plain pork. You know you're at a good bánh mì spot when the grilled pork carries the smoky, caramelized flavor of barbecue chicken, but here, there was none of that. The bread was technically good, crispy on the outside and soft inside, but even that couldn't save the experience. I came with my sister, who had never tried bánh mì before, and it was a terrible first impression for her. Between the run-down environment, the underwhelming food, and the sense that the place might be on its last legs, it was not worth our time or appetite. I will definitely not be returning

As for the sandwich, it was about $1-$3 cheaper than Duc Huong and their sandwiches do not cut the roof of your mouth! Doc Huong sandwiches are too tough for me and I prefer the softer, fresh french bread. Duc Huongs meat is also a bit too charred for me while Thien Huong's meat is a bit more juicier and tender.
