I've been coming to this bakery since the 2010s for their lunch portions. I love that you can get a porridge + 2-3 dim sum items depending on which meal you choose. I always get the century egg porridge with cheong fun, xiu mais, and turnip cake. Their porridge is always delicious with the creamy egg. But the dim sum could be hit or miss. I went early Saturday morning but I think the turnip cake may have been left over from the previous day because it had a sour smell to it this day, which was different from usual. I still ate it and it tasted better than it smelled and had no stomach issues LOL With inflation, it feels bad that my go-to lunch combo went up from $6 to $14 but still good portion size in this economy! I've been going here for a couple of years. It's a tiny place next to a Korean Supermarket in the shopping center at the corner of Kiely and Saratoga Ave. Their shumai is pretty good or used to be. They have a wide range of Dim Sum available till mid-day. The portions are good, most items are under $8 and you get 3 pieces of Dim Sum. The size of each item is quite generous but it seems mostly quantity and not very high quality. It's always busy though and at lunch time, there is a line to get food and the women working there are very efficient. We got shumai, shrimp dumplings, shrimp cresent rolls, bean cake and another shrimp item. There is no place to sit, it is a carry out only place. As if with most places, parking can be tricky especially around meal times. The problem with the food is that it is piping how when you pick up but by the time you get home, it is cold and it does not taste the same when reheated. The items are also very greasy. The dim sum quality is not the best, but acceptable for its price and portion size. My favorite items are the shrimp rice rolls, shrimp and chive dumpling, xiu mai, and har gow. I'm a big fan of steamed BBQ Pork buns but its not my favorite thing here because the bao part is very doughy and there is not enough filling for me. The shrimp paste filling is not like what you would get from a sit down dim sum restaurant with actual little pieces of shrimp but still tasty. Each order comes with 3 pieces. The Rice Noodles Sheets had 2 pieces of shrimp in it. Each order comes with 2 sheets. The Rice Noodle sheet is on a thicker side. It came with the sweet soy sauce dip. This was just ok. Egg custards were good. Good size and reasonably priced. The tart shell was made of flaky dough which I like. The egg custard itself was not too sweet. They have a buy 5 get 1 free deal. In the same store there's another counter that serves roat pork, roast duck and chasiu pork but I didn't try them this time. They seemed to have regular customers because the staff seemed to know the customers that were coming in and what they order and they were having long conversations with each other. Be cautious when ordering food at this dim sum place. This was my first visit, and I knew exactly what I wanted to order -- a hot dog bun. Unfortunately, the server gave me a green onion bun instead. When selecting roast pork, i typically always choose the rib section when it's available. The guy behind the counter chopping the pork showed me the piece i would get and even measured it on the scale. For efficiency, there's two separate lines in front of the two separate doors, 1) dim sum only, 2) bbq only. What happens if you want both? The quality of the food just isn't the same anymore. I am spoiled by the dim sum take out places in San Francisco and Oakland, and nothing in Sacramento compares. Compared to the best of those, this is only a 2 or 1.5. Then again, the few take out options in Sacramento provide limited choices. So, even among the Sacramento options, Tai pan is probably just average. The dim sum is not cooked fresh to order, but is made in a batch and sold throughout the day. This is typical for take out dim sum places. The key is turnover. If the product sells fast, new batches are brought out frequently. If the product does not sell, the batch could sit out all day, waiting to be sold. With that in mind, if you go, go early and get them while they are fresher. One last point, some take out dim sum places keep their har gow, situ mai and other dumplings and steamed baos fresh by keeping them in steaming bamboo baskets. Typically when I come I only pay in cash. Customers here usually order in Vietnamese or Cantonese but you can still get by with ordering in English without any issues. This is the Panda Express for dim sum except there's no place to sit and eat the stuff. Since we're in the middle of a pandemic, there's a line that forms to enter so make sure you HAVE CASH before lining up or you would be wasting 30-40 minutes of your life daydreaming of dim sum that you can't take home. An order is typically $5 for 3 pcs. One of my favorites is the deep fried shrimp dumplings that is pretty legit. What I really come here for is the red bean mochi. So soft and yummy. Another treasure here is the egg custard which are $1 each or buy 5 and get 1 free. Of course it's no where as good as Golden Gate Bakery in Chinatown but then again this is SJ and you get the convenience of a parking lot. There's a separate line for roast duck and BBQ Pork so bring a friend if you want some of that too.
