    Baked Eggplant Parmesan

Giovanni's Brooklyn Eats and I go back a long time.. maybe twenty years. His first location was on Seventh Avenue; it was a two room space. I knew then and there this was going to be my place. Giovanni personally visited each table and warmly greeted his guests and ensured everything was great. Then, we came annually for New Years Eve and ordered the special course of squid ink pasta with mussels, shrimp and lobster. We were introduced to his beautiful family. Then Giovani move to Eight Avenue, and we followed: eating delicious Arugula salad al fresco, the Bottomless Brunches on Sunday delicious pastas, entrees and the occasional lunch. The location unfortunately had a fire, and Giovanni's was closed for over a year and reopened across the street. Tonight, my friend Alissa and I finally dined at the new location. It still has the same rustic charm with brick walls, wooden tables, open kitchen and a beautiful bar. I recognized the Cent'Anni plaque on the wall from all the New Years spent at Giovanni's. Tonight I wanted to try some new items: 1. Cocktail: Orange Rose: white wine with orange peel. I am not a a Rose drinker but found the taste natural and unique.Alisa had the Sauvignon Blanc and loved it. 2. Appetizer: Whipped Ricotta with honey, pistachio and figs. Heavenly course with toast to smother this delicious spread. Alisa had the Arancini and thought the serving was delicious! 3. Main: Alisa had the cavatelli with melaneze and couldn't stop eating it. I enjoyed the eggplant parmigiana; eggplant was baked not fried 4. Dessert: First time trying Spumoni gelato; absolutely scrumptious with cherries inside the Spumoni Our server, Eya, was delightful, personable and professional. She has worked here 8 years and of course we shared our history of dining here with her. I know there will be many more great dining experiences to share in the future! Giovanni's Brooklyn Eats is located at 1666 8th Avenue Take R train to Prospect Fourth Avenue and walk 15 minutes to Eighth Avenue Or take F train to 15th Street Prospect Park, 7 minute walk

I'm getting hungry leaving this review. Giovanni's is my friends and I's favorite place to catch up and get spaghetti. The wait staff are so kind and I love the family environment. Much less packed, and more bang for your buck, than nearby Pasta Louise.

Maybe 3.5 stars? The service and wine list are stellar!!!!!! I was a little disappointed that the shrimp parmigiana doesn't come with a pasta for the cost, spaghetti and red sauce would go a long way. The vegetable lasagne had mushrooms which was a surprise, I didn't love that and wish it had been listed on the menu. I am glad they have expanded and would still come again!

A good friend recommended me to come to Giovanni's. We arrived and was greeted by the owners son Dean and the owner Giovanni. They were both extremely nice and welcoming. The restaurant is really nice. Very Italian with tin ceilings, family pictures on the wall, open kitchen, beautiful bar and a band playing. This restaurant is situated on a corner. They had all the windows open on this beautiful night. It was super cozy and the ambience was very chill. The staff was really nice and very accommodating. Anything I asked they were quick to give me an explanation. We started off with a specialty cocktail and beer. The cocktail was a take on a pina colada heavy on the lime over ice. Well balanced. It was delicious. We got apps a spinach salad and frito misto. Both were delicious. The dressing was perfect with poached pears and Gorgonzola cheese also frito misto with an assortment of veg as well as calamari. For dinner we ordered short rib with mash. The mash was amazing, sauce was delicious short rib needed a touch more in the oven. Still though just a delicious dish. For dessert we ordered apple bread pudding with gelato. We thoroughly enjoyed this. This was moist not to sweet. Really just perfect and a great way to end a meal. Overall I love Giovanni's. It's a great neighborhood restaurant. The owner and his son are just wonderful people . I will def be back for dinner and brunch

Meat special- Osso Buco Veal shank served over Parmesan risotto

Heard amazing things about Giovanni's and had to come out for a special occasion! I had placed a reservation and upon arriving, it was already a full house! We got seated and served warm soft bread! As we looked through the menu, there was also a little corner with live music playing and it was truly incredible! I felt I was transported to a small little restaurant in Italy! The hostess came by and introduced the specials for the night and of course we had to try it out! We ordered the veal shank on a bed of Parmesan risotto and the pan seared duck over roasted asparagus with saffron honey cream sauce. Presentation looked incredible and portion for the veal was great! I just wish there was a little more to the duck dish. Nonetheless, flavors were great and the duck was soft with a slight chew. The asparagus were not as tender as I had hoped- the ends were a lot more fibrous and I did not end up enjoying the asparagus. But the saffron honey cream went perfectly well with the duck! The veal shank was soft and it fell of the bone! There was still enough of a meaty bite that paired well with the savory, salty, cheesy risotto! The risotto was definitely filling! Not pictured, we also got a Bolognese Bianco and the portion was just right! Great food all around and the atmosphere even better! I would come back and try different dishes as I've heard that they have a variety of in house made pastas! To end the night, because we were celebrating a birthday- you can't leave without trying the tiramisu! Incredible incredible tiramisu! You can taste the coffee and liqueur that was used! A great end to an amazing night!

Tasty food great ambiance with live music, 3 piece jazzon the Saturday that I was there. Attractive wall with old b&w family pictures. Kat was my server, very friendly; she knew and explained the menu well.

    Gemelli al Pesto with Rigatoni

I lived in Park Slope for many years and had never been to this restaurant until recently. My husband and I decided to give it a try, and we had a great time. We loved the ambiance; the lights were dim, and I really enjoyed their music playlist, which featured a lot of Frank Sinatra. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. For our appetizer, we ordered the meatballs, which were okay, but I felt the sauce was a bit too acidic for my taste. For our entrées, I had rigatoni pesto with chicken, and my husband chose rigatoni alla vodka. Both dishes were delicious; the sauce was fresh, and I could taste all the herbs. For drinks, I ordered the Mambo Italiano, which was fine, though I mostly chose it because it contained coconut. This is a nice date night restaurant and its local. We enjoyed ourselves and will definitely return!

So I came back and Giovanni's is resurrected across the street. It's a Friday night and the place is packed!!! Giovanni's son introduces himself and has his father come over and we give each other a big hug. I ordered a basic gnocchi with pomodoro sauce. Delicious. Then I finished with an espresso. On the house. Great having this place back. In a beautiful new place!!

There is true hospitality here. Dino the don and Giovanni is the dad and they do everything right here: the food is quality ingredients and I say this because you can taste it. My montipulchiano wine and Sardinian wine were top tier like when I go back to Italy to visit my cousins. The frito misto was amazing. Light and tasty. Good mix. Actually outstanding just like the table salad. Best I ever had. The fried zucchini flowers were so yummy like zeppoli almost. The vegetarian lasagna was the best I ever had in a restaurant. Seriously. The pasta was homemade and every layer was separate and well executed. Good pesto. The housemade squid ink pasta ravioli stuffed with lobster outstanding. Thh lobster was fresh. The lemon cello cake was the best dessert of my year. Live music. Friday and sat. We heard a great New Orleans band and got to hear Giovanni singing. What a treat. Packed out the door with people.

Met friends here for brunch on a Saturday afternoon and the service and food were both excellent. They put a unique spin on the espresso martini and it was delicious! The brunch menu which allows you to select an appetizer and entree was a great value for the quality of food. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather in this more quiet area of Brooklyn. Would definitely return and try the dinner menu too!

All I can say is, WOW! This is one of those hidden gems, that needs to be found. The food and the service were absolutely incredible. The location itself has such a warm feeling to it and the photos on the walls were a great touch. We started off with these baked clams, which were the best I've ever had. The rice ball was cooked perfect, crunchy and cheesy on the inside. Dinner, we ordered the sword fish special and the spaghetti with meat balls (just like you get for Sunday dinner). Both were excellent. Now the dessert, do not go to this location and forget to try the bread pudding... WOW! It was the perfect ending to our meal, partnered up with a cappuccino. We will definitely be going back.

There are three rows of long wooden picnic-style tables, big umbrellas, greenery everywhere and an ivy-covered wall surrounding the space. It feels relaxed and communal but still has a lovely casual elegance. I could absolutely see a group taking over one of these tables for a birthday or special occasion. More importantly, dogs are invited. I was immediately offered a water bowl and settled comfortably under the table to begin my duties as the evening's culinary supervisor. Mom and Dad started with the Pork Belly Spiedini. I watched it arrive. I moved closer. I made eye contact. I placed one paw gently on Mom's leg. I feel I communicated my intentions quite clearly. Apparently, we have very different communication styles. Mom then ordered the Agnolotti, which arrived covered in enough cheese to get my attention from floor level, along with an Amaro Soda. Dad had the Tagliata steak and fries with an Old Fashioned. Yes. Steak. At one point I was literally sitting underneath a table containing pork belly, pasta AND steak. Please refer to the photographic evidence of my working conditions. The humans declared everything delicious. I can personally confirm that everything smelled delicious, which is apparently the extent of my participation in restaurant reviewing now. And then came dessert. Tiramisu. Did I receive tiramisu? No. Did I stare at it professionally? Yes. Despite the deeply concerning food-sharing policies within my own family, I loved Ammazzacaffè. The beautiful garden patio, relaxed atmosphere and genuinely dog-friendly welcome make this exactly the kind of Brooklyn restaurant where the humans can have a great dinner while I happily hang out with them. Dogba's verdict: 5 paws out of 5. Secret garden patio: exceptional Personal water service: appreciated Mom's pasta: apparently excellent Dad ordering steak within sniffing distance: unnecessarily cruel Pork belly allocation to Dogba: under investigation Tiramisu allocation: I don't want to talk about it Would return. The room is small and romantic, homemade pasta hangs in the front window, and the whole evening felt less like dining out and more like being invited into someone's family table in Florence. We started with the fritto misto, a well executed mix of fried fish and vegetables, alongside an insalata caprese that let fresh tomatoes, burrata and basil speak for themselves. From there we went family style, which is really the only way to do it here. The bucatini cacio e pepe was as much performance as dish, mixed tableside directly in the cheese wheel. The fusilloni di Gragnano from Puglia paired scampi with burrata, cherry tomatoes and arugula for a bright, briny plate, while the tagliatelle verdi brought a rich wild boar ragu finished with fresh black truffle. The two standouts, though, were the agnolotti ossobuco with veal sauce and pecorino fondue rounded out with thyme and lemon, and the lasagna Bolognese. That lasagna, layered with meat ragu, tomato and bechamel, may be the best I have ever had. We paired the meal with a bottle of Salvioni 2022 Rosso di Montalcino, aromatic and beautifully matched to the food. The space is cozy and intimate rather than sprawling, so a reservation is a smart call. Everything else, from the food to the atmosphere to the sense that someone's nonna was cooking just for us, made this one of the most memorable meals in NYC. We would return without hesitation.

Overall it was good, but the combination needed better balance. The gorgonzola had a pretty aggressive bite, and paired with the saltiness of the prosciutto it became a little much. There were some greens underneath, and once I incorporated those into each bite, they mellowed everything out considerably. I actually think the greens needed to be treated as part of the dish rather than essentially garnish. For my entrée I had the special, a risotto with clams and octopus. The octopus was easily the best part. The clams were extremely small and pretty average, to the point that I'm not sure they added much to the dish at all. The risotto itself was also surprisingly bland and not particularly enjoyable on its own. Mixed with the octopus, however, it worked much better and became a genuinely enjoyable bite. That's ultimately where the dish felt a little uneven: the strongest component was carrying the rest of the plate rather than everything working together. Service was fine when I arrived, but became noticeably slower once the outdoor seating filled up. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor sections, but appeared to have only two servers, with the hostess also serving and a barback supporting the operation. Once the patio got busy, most of the staff's attention shifted outside and the indoor dining room received considerably less attention. Nobody seemed lazy or inattentive individually. It simply looked understaffed for the number of tables they were trying to cover. One additional server during the busy period probably would have made a substantial difference. And, admittedly a minor thing, an Italian restaurant having limoncello but no amaretto was disappointing. Nothing here was terrible. The appetizer had good ideas, the octopus was quite good, and the meal had several enjoyable moments. The food and service were just inconsistent enough that I couldn't quite call it a strong three-star experience, but it was close. I'd put it around 2.75 stars, which I'm comfortable rounding to three.

Of course, we did what we always do; showed up without a reservation haha... It was packed, and the hostess told us the was no way they could seat us. Defeated, we went outside ans sat on a bench trying to figure out our next move. Then the unimaginable happened. One of the people running the floor passed us outside, started chatting with us, and said, "let me double-check". A few minutes later, he came back and got us a table! He make sure we understood that we only had it for a short window bc they needed it back at a certain time -- but we got at least hour and a half to enjoy it so we were THRILLED. To us that was more than enough. He really went out of his way to make it happen, and honestly wish I remembered his name so I could give him the credit he deserves. And the service from there was outstanding. Even though we knew we had a time restriction, we never felt rushed or hurried for a second. Everything felt relaxed, attentive, and perfectly paced, which made them whole experience even better. Once we sat down, we started ordering as quickly as possible. The grilled clams were insanely good -- flavorful and with just the right little kick. The Nduja & sungold tomato toast was surprise favorite. The tomatoes were so juicy, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. Simple, but SO good. The little gem salad was fresh, crunchy and exactly what we needed in between all the richer dishes. For pastas, I had the mafaldini with parmigiano, one of their signatures, and it was delicious. BUT... I have to give the win to my husband's pick, rigatoni alla diavola. I know they are completely different dishes, and Im usually a white-sauce kind of girl, but there was something about that bold, spicy flavor that just HIT THE SPOT. And dessert... The vanilla soft serve gelato and the warm rasberry tart together were the perfect combination -- creamy, warm, fruity, and just the right way to finish our lucky dinner. Lilia was absolutely worth the wait and definitely lived up to the hype. Another Brooklyn spot checked off the list -- and one I'd happily go back to.

Started with the Prosciutto- it had a good pairing of balsamic and parmigian butter. The sheep's milk agnolotti was definitely the highlight - the filling was slightly tangy since it is sheep's milk but that was a great balance to the creaminess. The mafaldini was topped with red peppercorn and the pasta had a good texture and chew. Finished off with the Vanilla gelato which was the perfect ending. Overall I would definitely come back here.

Oh the old school thrill of an old school beauty of an establishment like Bamonte's!…read more I just love this place so much! I can't say enough great things about the decor the ambience and imagining all of the past goings on in this restaurant. It's been watching over Brooklyn for well over 100 years now! That in itself is a Herculean feat! From what I was told it was very popular with the mob as they say... And that's why the kitchen which is at the very back of the restaurant has full glass windows so that you can see exactly what's going on in there. I guess some of these mob guys were paranoid and rightly so consider considering their history. I arrived with my friend on a Wednesday evening about 6 PM and there were some scattered tables but by 7 PM it was mobbed (pun intended ) in there!! our waiter was affable and patient and a quite enjoyable fellow. As a sidenote, you will not find any female servers they are all male which l lends to the old school vibe in my opinion. My friend ordered the lamb chops with broccoli Rabe. He enjoyed them but did mention that though they had great flavor one of them was slightly tough... It happens... My meal was pasta with Bolognese sauce with a dollop of fresh ricotta on top. It was delicious actually the sauce was excellent. I would've liked to have a different pasta shape but they did not have it. No biggie. I could really say the food was very good but it was not excellent but for me that was not an issue as I fell in love with the place itself. The service was excellent and the ambience was fantastic! I would definitely return again and I highly recommend it if you have never been you must at least go one time!!
