We just had lunch with my partner here... first off, the place is warm and cozy. The staff are attentive and very welcoming. Their lunch menu isn't that many items. We didn't mind it. Let me tell you, their homemade beef stew was so delish, the beef pieces were very tender and almost falling apart. Very very tasty!!! I recommend it! Then we also have the veal parmigiano sandwich/bun. The homemade bun was served warm and the veal patty was spiced just right. It was really a good lunch meal. The price was okay, not cheap but not overly priced. Try this Italian restaurant, they do serve delicious meals. read more

We had such a wonderful dinner here! We crossed the border on our UP trip into Canada because we really wanted Italian and we could not have chosen better. We had a great Easter dinner with family at Giovanni's on Sunday. There were 5 in our party and the service was fast and the food, delicious. We were visiting for the weekend so my uncle made a reservation. We arrived at 5:00 and the resto was half full, lots of cars in the parking lot. We had salads first-- my husband and I had the Caesar salad and I had a glass of the Cabernet Sauvignon from California, which was lovely. My husband had the wild mushroom risotto with fennel sausage and really liked it. It was a very generous portion and he couldn't finish it. I opted for the tutti mare-seafood linguine. It was fantastic! All my favourites: scallops, mussels, shrimp --plus little baby octopuses -- in a red marinara sauce. Delicious! Larry was our waiter and he was perfectly attentive and responsive to requests for more wine or cans of Pepsi. I saw the dessert fridge on my way in and saved room for a scrumptious piece of carrot cake, which I happily shared. Sault Ste. Marie is known for its Italian food and Giovanni's was a really classy experience. read more

We ate at Giovanni's last night and were so appreciative of their kindness right at the start. We sat at the bar to wait for a table, and then the bartender kindly offered to let us eat right there. The food was outstanding, and the service was too. Everyone was so attentive and helpful. It is a cozy Italian restaurant that makes you feel right at home. My first meal ever in Sault Ste Marie was at Giovanni's! Service was very friendly, the decor was nice, but the food was very run-of-the-mill Italian food, at least in my opinion. The quality was reminiscent of big chain family restaurants. I went here with my husband and two people from his work. We were staying at the Fairfield Inn and wanted to dine somewhere within walking distance, so it was Giovanni's or Boston Pizza. I didn't want to have bought a plane ticket to The Soo to accompany my husband on a business trip to eat at a chain restaurant that I could eat at anytime back home, so I voted for Giovanni's. Turns out it was probably 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. So I had the "Tour of Italy" ($19.95), which sounded really promising as it had tortellini, ravioli, gnocchi and meatballs. It also came with a garden salad. The garden salad came out and the dressing on the side was in a little Solo plastic container (you know, the ones you get sauce in when you order a meal to go). I would expect that from a diner off the highway, but not a restaurant that touts itself as a real Italian restaurant. And the salad was, you guessed it, mostly iceberg lettuce (or as I like to call it "cheapie filler not real lettuce"). Then my meal came and visually it was not that appetizing. It was a pile of white covered by a sauce of red. At least the colours were patriotic I guess, lol. Sometimes looks can be deceiving, so maybe the taste was awesome, right? Well, it wasn't exactly awesome. It was not dissimilar from what I've had at say an East Side Mario's. The pasta was al dente, at least, but lacking in that true Italian pasta deliciousness. The meat balls were too soft and tasted more of filler to me than meat. So yeah, I was kind of bummed by the food. However, service was really sweet and friendly (as it usually is in small towns). The decor was warm and welcoming. Now maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but hey, I ordered a pasta sampler at an Italian Restaurant, if anything that should be the right thing to order. I should mention that others at the table said they enjoyed their meal, but maybe they were saying that to be polite. I don't know. I did taste some of my husband's mushroom risotto and it was creamy and mushroomy and while I don't really like risotto, I have to admit that I think the quality of his dish was better than mine. There's free parking in their private lot. And if you are staying at the Marriott Fairfield Inn you get 10% off your bill if you show them your hotel key card (I knew this but we totally forgot when it was time to pay - silly us!). They also own Fratelli's Kitchen, which is next door, and The Burger Don (further south on Great Northern). I would recommend going to The Burger Don. We enjoyed it there much more than we did at Giovanni's (although it's a different type of food). read more

Busy place. A bit of waiting because of business. We were not ignored by any means. Just very busy on a Monday night when a lot of other restaurants are closed. That being said, the meal was well worth the wait. Tomato sauce is perfection!. Lasagna was not the typical dense, thick generic square. Layers were visible. And most importantly, scrumptious. On Saturday a group of friends got together at Giovanni's. I ordered veal parmigiana on a bun and chose pasta fagioli soup as my side. When the bill arrived I questioned why I was charged $3 for soup when it was included with my sandwich. I was told it was an up charge for Pasta Fagioli. Chicken noodle soup was $5.50 while Pasta Fagioli was priced at $6.50. That is not a $3 difference. I asked why she hadn't advised me of the up charge and she explained it was in the menu. Before leaving the restaurant I studied the menu and found no mention of up charges and I am still upset that I had to pay this up charge. read more

We were at Giovanni's for dinner on August 18. Very busy place, the restaurant was almost full but we had a reservation. The service was excellent, Giselle was very friendly, knowledgeable, and always had a big smile on, she went out of her way to make us happy and it worked. The food was great, I must say we've always had good food at your restaurant but tonight was even better because of our waitress. Thank you Giselle, and also thank you to the chef for great food. We were in town for the first time ever and were drawn in by the name it shares with one of our favourite cruise ship restaurants. We had the Arancini as well as Tour of Italy and an order of Gnocchi. The arancini alone were worth the visit. Tender with a superb sauce they were not to be missed. The Tour of Italy was Gnocchi, Tagliatelle and Ravioli with tomato sauce and meatballs. A very good dish with the tagliatelle as my preferred pasta. The Gnocchi was served with meatballs and tomato sauce and was fantastic. If there is any complaint it is that the portions were too generous and since we were travelling we could not take the leftovers. read more

I'm not sure if I am allowed to give a rating to Giovanni's considering I haven't eaten there. My family and I went, and we weren't attended to so we left. People that came in after us had received drinks and even started getting their food before someone asked for our drinks (nobody came). We tried signaling for a waiter but were ignored, so we walked out. read more

I drove 5 1/2 hours to have a birthday dinner with my daughter who made the reservation on tuesday. Saturday late afternoon they called her and cancelled our reservation due to the fact that they were having a private party. This was very disheartening. Went for the wife's birthday. I had never been but heard good things so thought why not. When we arrived they put us in a little corner all by ourselves felt shuned out from the rest of the guest but hey whatever. Than out server came to us very knowledgeable so I assumed she handed off a mouthful of specials ... The wife wanted something seafood so she ordered off the menu. I like to go out try something I wouldn't make at home so I tried the "special " it was a veal chops in Port sauce some risotto and I forget what else she mentioned. She leaves brings us bread and tells me that that's no longer on special. Now I didn't look at the menu long so I hadn't memorized it however she felt I had. Told me to pick something else so I picked the tour of Italy or taste I can't recall... I expected something good...I got a over cooked pile of slop with some sauce and two of the worse meatballs I've ever eaten. I told the waitress it was not good so she did offer to make something else however my wife was a tad embarrassed by my actions I just told her I'd eat it and smile .. I will never be back not even if it was free .. I've been to many of the Italian spots here all for the most part amazing however not this one in my opinion. Love this place, always come here when I'm in town and I'm never unsatisfied! Had the portobello penne tonight for my main. Calamari to start and Nutella bites for dessert. The penne was outstanding! Not the typical run of the mill Italian Resturant dish but was amazing! Creamy sauce with big chunks of perfectly cooked chicken, portobellos and sun dried tomatoes. I usually don't like sun dried tomatoes but in this dish it was perfect and not over bearing. The calamari was cooked to perfection, make sure to get lots of lemon on it for the spices to pop. The Nutella bites... Wow! Well, any time you use Nutella it's cheating because you could put Nutella on anything and it tastes good! But when you make and cook the pastry in house, now you just took it to the next level! Good job Giovanni's keep it up!! read more

We were passing through Sault St Marie, and our hotel recommended that we go to Giovanni's. They said it was the best italian restaurant in town, and I was quite unimpressed. The prices are more expensive than I had expected, and the food was quite bland. I had a pizza, and the crust was much thicker than what I expected. Over hyped restaurant. The garden salad has cheap iceberg lettuce or you can upgrade to a ceaser for $3. Got the chicken parm it was good but not much flavour. Paired it with the fettuccine Alfredo not much flavour in the Alfredo either. My S.O got the prime rib and they put it on the grill.... never ever seen that. Tasted mediocre for the price. Didnt have fresh Parmesan either which is odd considering it's an Italian restaurant. Service was quick and friendly. Liked the white zin wine and desert. But for $90 with tip would much rather go to Barsanti's. read more

The good:. fast service and friendly staff i like the open, dark and quiet ambience the bad: my pasta dish had olives and jumbo shrimp, the shrimp still had the tails on and the olives still had the pits and one olive still had the stalk. Dish tasted good though. No pasta dish with shrimp should you ever have to fish the sauce-covered shrimp out by hand to remove the tails, in my opinion. House red wine was from Pelee Island winery and was terrible. First glass ok, second glass tasted rancid. Pelee Island wines are hit or miss, mostly miss, in my experience. There was olive oil on all tables for your bread but no balsamic vinegar like there used to be. Weird. read more

The food was amazing. We started with the appetizer special, a crab dip with sundried tomatoes. It was exquisite. I had the New York steak with vegetables, jumbo shrimp skewer and side of Gnocchi. The taste was unbelievable. My girlfriend had penne candantina. It had chicken, roasted red peppers with goat cheese in a light olive oil sauce. She ate every bight. The portion sizes were perfect, almost too big. The service was top notch, both at the bar while we waited and from our server at our table. The host was a sweet Italian woman. We highly reccomend this restaurant to anyone travelling to Sault Ste Marie. Definitely a 5 star restaurant. read more

My daughters and I live across the river and we used to go to Giovanni's for their family salad. The salad was big and has the best dressing EVER! However, we will not be returning again as they changed the menu on us and don't offer their family salad any more. Very, very disappointing! It's the ONLY reason we ever came in there. It was very reasonably priced. Now, we are given two okay servings of salad and when we got the bill, we were absolutely shocked! It came to over $30 for two salads with grilled chicken...three times what we normally paid! We won't be back, ever. :( read more

We had reasonable hopes for Giovanni's based on past reviews, but left disappointed overall by the quality of the food. We had two entrees, an appetizer, and a couple of glasses of the house red wine. The calamari friti were heavily breaded and un-salted. This left them bland and uninteresting. Shrimp puttanesca over linguine was more promising by appearance. The olives were the highlight of the sauce, which was also bland, and the shrimp were large and nicely prepared; however, the pasta itself was pasty and unappealing. The salmon filet special was a decent piece of fish - a bit fishy and overdone. The green beans were overcooked and mushy. The lowlight of the meal was the fettuccine alfredo. Again, the pasta was poorly made and cooked, but these flaws paled in comparison to the white sauce that was thin, watery and oddly seasoned. The house wine was decent for the price. The service was fine and friendly. In the end, this was a 100 CAD meal with tip that simply was not worth the price. read more
