This rock 'n roll themed diner is a downriver favorite for breakfast. The food is consistently good, even if the same order isn't always exactly the same. For example, I get the "Hearty" breakfast most of the time and it comes with eggs, meat, pancakes, potatoes and toast, and it really highlights what is this place's strength. Eggs: I get mine scrambled and have a nice selection of hot sauce to choose from. Meat: I appreciate that they offer turkey sausage since I don't eat beef or pork, but my wife loves their bacon if that's your thing. Pancakes: quality varies the most here as they are sometimes a little pale (but still good) but more often the idyllic golden one expects when ordering. Potatoes: lots of variety here, too, as my home fries come in different sized cuts with seasoning ranging from none to "no need for salt or pepper?" Toast: Again, wide variety of choices, I go with sourdough most often If this sounds like a lot of food, there are lots of other options that make it appealing to smaller appetites. But what I like about the "Hearty" is all the choices and the variation in style (probably depends on who's staffing the griddle) allows me to order the same meal and still feel like I'm getting some variety. Having said that, keep an eye out for the specials. They sometimes are tempting enough to get me to stray from usual. Ate here for the first time last week. There at lunch time. Service was good, food was excellent, but it was too noisy for us. There were 2 tables that were a little louder than usual, but even when they left, it was still too noisy. Appears to be no sound deadening in the ceiling. This makes us reluctant to dine here again. I am not too familiar with Allen Park, but my friend suggested this restaurant while we were in the area and it did not disappoint! Glass Onion Griddle is a family restaurant true-and-true as the staff welcomes you like family and their food is made fresh with quality and filling portions! I have been here twice, and was so impressed to see the owners that were so hands-on with all areas, that is great to see! I am trying to be a regular at this place. The dining area is clean and comfortable. I tend to sit at the bar often times I will go here to eat breakfast or lunch and finish reading for school. I highly recommend sitting at the bar, the woman who provides service at the bar is very friendly and does a great job with customer service. The food is pretty standard breakfast and lunch fare. Classic diner food with a twist. Came here for breakfast today and was greeted warmly by the host. Sat at the bar and looked over the menu. Lunch looked to be a little more creative that breakfast but I opted for the Irish omelette with a small side of biscuits and gravy. Food came out quickly, no more than 10 mins piping hot. The omelette was tasty. There was a lot of sauerkraut which I didn't mind, was lacking corn beef hash but I get it. The chive sauce on top was a nice addition to the meal. I've been to Glass Onion Griddle several times for lunch in the past, but my my first breakfast visit was recent. I've found the restaurant to be little fancier than a lot of the Coney Islands around and they serve dishes that are a bit more unique with more flair. While I've seen the place completely full on the weekends, breakfast on a weekday seems to be a more lax affair. Service is always friendly and prompt and the food is always good. For this visit, I got one item: French Toast Sandwich ($13) - The french toast is a nice, thick cut Texas toast with a delicious egg batter. As the name implies, this is constructed into a sandwich - the bottom slice is slathered with a slightly spiced maple butter, then an omelette with embedded moons of breakfast sausage is placed on top, and finally the other slice of french toast. Of course it's dusted with a layer of powdered sugar, giving additional sweetness. The sweet/savory combo works very nicely together. Two slices of orange are on the side to add some additional fruity sweetness. They also give a cup of fruit with mostly honeydew and some cantaloupe and grapes. I'm sure the fruit salad changes as different fruits go in and out of season. (4/5) The restaurant has traditional table service except for payment - you take your bill and pay at the counter. I took my friend here today for breakfast. I was a little leery since I hadn't been here for a while, and I was given the task to find a good place to eat. She ordered the Eggs and Corned Beef and said it was the best breakfast she's ever had. She was even talking about returning before she'd finished her meal. That's saying something since it's a thirty minute drive for us to get here. I ordered the special, Eggs and Ropa Vieje. It was tender roasted beef with tomatoes, onions and green olives. It was served with roasted sweet potato tots, 2 eggs, and toast. The cook knocked it out of the park with this one. I'm so glad we stopped by the Glass Onion today. I've had some really great experiences here, but also quite a few that were just okay. The inconsistency is probably the biggest reason why this place isn't my first choice anymore. The food can range from tasting really good and fresh to getting pancakes that are still wet inside. The service is also unpredictable; sometimes the servers won't leave you alone, and other times they are nowhere to be found, making you feel like you're bothering them if you ask for anything. Thick cut bacon, fresh toast bread, home made sausage gravy. To me these are all signs of a great dining experience. The Carmel apple waffle was a special the day of our visit. But it was so good. A big thank you to whoever decided to stay open until 9:00 on Fridays! I have only ever ate breakfast here and it is delicious. Since they are now open late on Friday,we had to try some non breakfast food and it did not disappoint! The chicken noodle soup was clearly homemade and full of carrots and nice chunks of chicken. The bruschetta was so good and was served with the best baguette. Popped in for breakfast with our toddler one morning. It's seat yourself seating and we were able to sit away from the crowd to have a bit more space. Service was fast as was the delivery of the food! We enjoyed our meals. The sausage patty seemed as if it was made in house, potatoes were cooked very well, french toast was dense and flavorful, and the eggs were cooked perfectly. One thing that was off was that the prices of items were more on our receipt than they were online or on menu in front of us so that was a bit deceptive. so my experience with glass onion griddle well I was blown away the omelette was perfect. I asked them to make this big bad boy had eight eggs plus all the meats and inside of cucumbers. This is an outstanding breakfast spot. I travel a fair amount through the year and I'm so glad I stopped here. The food was excellent, I had the simple breakfast with eggs, toast and sausage links. This is a eally cool place. We were in a neighboring city and needed to eat bunch. Glass Onion looked good, so we stopped in. It's a smaller place so you will wait, but it went pretty quick. It's cute inside and they are playing some great music. The servers are like busy bees, taking care of everyone, and it's amazing how compact the kitchen is the turns out all this food. There are lots of options, you'll find something that tickles your fancy. I got the corned beef hash, and it was really good with big chunks of meat and browned onions. The potatoes were a little big for my taste and could have been cooked a bit more, but ok. The bread was tasty, and very hearty. I chose fairly traditional items - scrambled eggs, sausage links, bacon, potatoes, toast, pancakes, and biscuits with gravy. All were brought out quickly, hot and fresh. Everything was good tasting, noting over the top, but well-executed. I will say that the side of biscuits with gravy was a bit different than I used to receiving. The hash was ehh nothing special. The salsa is nothing special. The coffee is ok. I love Great Lakes "hydro" blend not sure which one they serve. I'm not a fan of the home fries. I usually rate a breakfast joint on hash browns. It's an art to use the right potatoes and perfect crisp of hash browns. They don't offer them. Another way breakfast joints get my undying business is the biscuits and gravy. These are ok I've had them 3x. The last visit they served my wife room temp biscuits and gravy and the gravy had "broken" clearly cold. They had to remake them and still charged us. It's whatever. Service is ok. read more
