The food! Limited menu but ordering a few items to share is the way to go! The brussel sprouts and focaccia are a must must must! Extensive wine list is available some by glass and some by bottle. We had the roasted carrots, Brussels and focaccia to share to start and a margarita pizza and brick oven chicken for meals. A lovely Pinot noir to go with dinner. We returned to Glen Ellen Star after having a fantastic five-star experience previously, but unfortunately this visit missed the mark in several ways. We arrived on time for our reservation and still waited about 15 minutes for our table. The seats we were given were directly with our backs to the door, on a very cold day that wasn't working for us; even though our reservation noted we were dining with a child. It didn't feel like that was taken into account. The team did accommodate us, but that required another ~15 minute wait. While waiting, the manager brought over glasses of wine, which was a kind gesture, but he simply handed one to me without asking. I don't really drink, so it felt a bit awkward. Then when we were asked to move to the table - I asked the hostess if she would help with those glasses, she said she would, but didn't... so I had to go back and grab them. Once seated, service continued to be uneven. When our server asked about bread, I said yes (no menu handed yet), I didn't realize this was a menu item with spices, not a simple bread service. My child couldn't eat it, so we ended up with something we didn't really want or eat. Dirty dishes stayed on our table far too long; even after I asked for them to be cleared, some remained for the rest of the meal. And the manager never checked on us again after the initial greeting. What really made the experience difficult was the table next to us: two men who had clearly had too much to drink, leaving and returning multiple times while arguing loudly and behaving inappropriately. It created an uncomfortable atmosphere for everyone around them, especially families. Staff did not intervene. Overall, the food was not the issue, service was. For a place we know can deliver an exceptional experience, this visit was disappointing on multiple fronts. My husband and I had Mothers' Day dinner here at sat at the Chef's counter. We were served by our lovely waiter, Matthew, who was very attentive and provided us with great service. Most of the reviews I read recommended sitting at the Chef's Counter, so that's what we did. There was actually little to no interaction with the chefs, but it was nice to see them hustling back there and putting together these amazing dishes. We had the house made focaccia bread that was served with salted butter with olive oil. The bread was delicious, and a perfect start to our meal. We then shared the white pizza and the wagyu steak which was cooked to perfection and served with this delicious grilled cabbage dish. After two days vacationing in glen Ellen, my honey and I are sold on the food quality and artfulness of the chefs and local business owners here. Glen Ellen star boast a diverse, but well curated menu that utilizes fresh local ingredients and provides a laidback experience with upscale flavors. We were treated to a seat at the chefs bar, where we got to watch three masters of the art create our food with care and attention. The cauliflower and heirloom tomato salad were to die for, and our pasta dishes, a good serving size not leaving us terribly comatose after the elaborate meal. The servers were prompt and quite friendly, although the restaurant was incredibly busy for a Monday evening. The sauce of the steak really did marry with the wagyu. I was not a fan of the cabbage sprinkled with salmon roe. Another starch would be nice. I feel like cabbage on a flavorful salad wagyu was not a good pair. Husband had the branzino. He loved it. I tasted the sweet potatoes it was good. Dessert: love love the brown butter cake. This is one of my favorite spots in Sonoma! The food here is always spot on and I always have a hard time choosing what to order. You cannot go wrong with their pizza! The crust has an incredible flavor and is so crisp and light! I love their pizza with the egg yolk jam! We have tried several of their pasta dishes as well and have been excellent! You're in CA deciding between Glen Ellen Star for $5-$10 more per plate or a cheaper option (about 20% less). Go with Glen Ellen Star. That's coming from a frugal guy at heart. Glen Ellen Star earned the 2024 Bib Gourmand Michelin Recognition, highlighting high-quality food at a reasonable price. After dining here, I can confidently say they've earned it. The food is outstanding--evident in how it looks, tastes, and costs. While not every dish floored me, every one had something special that made me say, "wow"--whether it was the flavor, texture, or creativity. Appetizers * Sourdough focaccia: As a bread snob and sourdough baker, this fell flat. A good focaccia should have a thin, crisp crust, a fried bottom, and a pillowy crumb with some chew. This felt more like a tender Italian roll. That said, the za'atar flavor was excellent (I'll be borrowing that idea). At $14-$15, it felt overpriced and should be complimentary given entrée prices. * Dungeness crab arancini: Crispy, cheesy, and served with a delicious sauce. If there's an arancini special, get it! At $18-$20 for three pieces, it's pricey but worth it. * White Pizza ($30): A 12" pizza with white sauce, smoked mozzarella, Swiss chard, maitake mushrooms, egg yolk jam, and Calabrian chili. It was a flavor and texture revelation. The egg yolk jam was phenomenal, and the creamy sauce packed flavor. My only gripe: the crust lacked chew and elasticity, and the edges were crunchy rather than crisp. Still, I'd get it again for the flavor alone. Entrées * Chipotle Glazed Chicken ($41): Served with wild rice pilaf, butternut squash mole blanco, roasted delicata squash, and pomegranate salsa. The chicken was slightly overcooked, but the mole added moisture and richness. The crispy skin was a highlight, and the dish felt cohesive. Very filling--worth recommending. * Cocoa Lumache with Pulled Pork ($38): Cocoa pasta with braised Kurobuta pork shoulder sugo, cavolo nero, cherry tomatoes, and crispy sunchokes. The cocoa flavor was subtle but interesting. My dish was light on pork, though my father-in-law's was loaded. The crispy sunchokes added texture and kept the dish from feeling monotonous. It was filling and a great value overall. The staff is friendly and professional, and the space, while cozy, has ample seating on one side. Parking might require some street spots, but it's manageable on the quiet street. Overall, I left impressed. The meal introduced me to new flavors, textures, and ideas. A meal at Glen Ellen Star, which my wife Jun and I visited on the second evening of our Sonoma trip last year, would be fairly close to that representation. The restaurant, away from the more heralded towns like Healdsburg and Sebastopol in the Sonoma wine country region, has the kind of cozy cottage charm that makes you smile. It's not the most upscale setting, but perfect for a low-key dinner where you don't feel forced to order an expensive bottle of wine. More importantly, the food at Glen Ellen Star, leveraging the wood oven in the kitchen, was mostly delicious. Jun and I were still somewhat recovering from the disastrous flight delay to the Bay Area, so we managed to order perhaps fewer dishes at Glen Ellen Star than we would've liked to get a full scan of the restaurant's menu but I think we chose wisely considering the circumstances. The cauliflower was a very good appetizer with a surprisingly spicy kick from salsa amarillo, especially with Peruvian corn kernels sprinkled that added a nice crunchy texture. Our server highly recommended sourdough and it was indeed tasty when dipped on house cultured butter with Hawaiian black sea salt. Glen Ellen Star also has a handful of pizzas on the menu, and if you are in need of a pie, you could do well with a red sauce pie with salami and Calabrian chili honey; we didn't end up finishing the pie that night and it was still delicious after we ate it in our hotel the next day. For a main dish, wood fired whole branzino was another pleasant gem; we'd had some fantastic branzino dishes before, but the use of Mexican mole sauce was quite ingenious. Getting a reservation is not terribly difficult but the dining room was fully packed during our meal so I do suggest booking your spot in advance if possible. If you can, try to grab a seat at the counter in front of the kitchen with the wood oven where all the magic is happening. On Wednesdays, Glen Ellen Star has a so-called "Neighborhood Night" menu with a three-course tasting menu at an affordable price range. The restaurant, not surprisingly, has an expansive list of California wines, many from lesser-known producers (I was excited one of my favorite California boutique producers Ceritas on the list). The friendly and attentive service of the staff added to the country charm of our dining experience. The service is really good, everyone we interacted with inside of the restaurant was really nice. Our waiter was super knowledgeable about all the dishes. The branzino was excellent, I have a weird thing about ordering a whole fish because I always feel like it's looking at me, but I got over it and it was so worth a shot, and I liked the unique flavor. The Waygu was excellent as well, but definitely needed better side accompaniment. My complaints are as follows: The side dishes could use a little improvement, also dessert menu could be improved and also the menu was limited but other than that it was so good and we would definitely be back. I overall enjoyed the food and experience at Glen Ellen Star. I think there were things that could have been improved too though. It was probably somewhere between 3 and 4 stars overall but I round up due to the highlights. First of all, it's a busy restaurant. They make it clear online what the table types are and on a Saturday night, it wasn't possible to get a slightly earlier time or an indoor table. The covered patio is a bit cold in the winter/early spring but there are heaters and blankets. It was fine in my opinion but if you are concerned with the temperature, you probably want an indoor table. Service was generally great but there were a few things that I thought could be improved. First of all, our first round of food (vegetables, appetizers) came out pretty fast but the pizza and main took a lot longer. In fact, they didn't come out until we asked and they were like "oh do you want your next course now?" (like 20+ minutes after we finished eating the appetizers). It was clear we were done with the previous course (they even asked if we wanted the food to go) so no idea why it took so long. Another that is minor but after a near $200 meal, we thought the birthday ice cream would have been comped and it wasn't. This is a tiny thing but could have been nice. We also almost forgot our leftovers because they forgot to give them back to us; luckily we noticed this. There were some good things like they fired the wrong item and they told us to keep it but took it off the bill. I think small little things could make the service go from just alright to being awesome. Food- most things were pretty good with some clear standouts. I don't think there was anything that was bad aside from personal preferences. We got: - Carrots: Everyone else liked these a lot but I thought they needed to be softer and roasted more. The highlight was all the different flavors and textures - Mixed chicory salad: I wished they had different salad options- your options are a plain green salad or this. The additions in this were nice but the bitter chicory isn't for everyone. I do like that they mixed the chicory and other lettuces though so it wasn't just one note and bitter - Wagyu meatballs (daily special): These were good but I think the sauce was better than the actual meatballs. Not sure if I'd order again but tasty. You got 3 in an order - Pretzel buns with short ribs and mushrooms (daily special): we didn't order this but they entered it by accident instead of the meatballs so it was comped. It definitely looked and sounded better than it actually was. The inside filling was actually pretty good but even as someone who enjoys pretzel buns, I found the outside quite tough. Oddly enough, the leftovers were somehow way better than this at the restaurant - Tomato cream pie: this was delicious. Our waitress said it would be charred in a good way due to the wood fire oven and while that definitely was true, the edges were a bit too far gone and weren't eaten. Adding additional toppings sounded good if they had them (they don't) but the pizza was very tasty as is and I'd order again - Branzino: this was really good. I wouldn't normally choose this over the other main options but I'm glad we got it. It's whole but deboned so pretty easy to eat. The tamarind brown butter sauce poured tableside was so good and the sweetness from the dates really made the dish memorable. There was a potato brandade inside the fish that was super salty but luckily the other flavors mostly masked it. I do think this would be one note if eaten as an entree though- sharing it with the pizza was nice. Overall, I would come back and many of the menu items we didn't get sounded delicious too. I think ordering various things and sharing is a good way to experience the menu. For our party of 3, the mentioned food was more than enough and we had several things left over. We ended up spending well over 2 hours there (not counting the initial wait for our table) which seems kind of long. I don't mind long meals at all as long as the pacing and "vibes" fit; here the restaurant is a bit busy/crowded and the pacing was quite uneven which is why it felt non ideal. read more

When we were visiting Sonoma recently, several people recommended this restaurant. Unfortunately, we we don't know why. We were quite disappointed. We had possibly the worst seat in the place--at a counter facing a blank wall with a fan blowing directly on our heads and backs. It took three requests to get the fan turned down. The gazpacho was swimming in olive oil. It was almost inedible. The Brussels sprouts were overcooked, some were burnt, and too salty. There is a 3% charge if you don't pay in cash. I'm sad it's taken me 11 years to come here. What a shame to have missed out on so many opportunities for deliciousness! However, I'm glad we went recently to celebrate my guy's birthday and put an end to that. I was able to make a reservation in the morning for chef's counter that evening which was great. It was a Monday so likely why it was flexible at the 11th hour. When I checked later in the day it was booked so I felt glad we got in. I've heard veggies are king here; I'm always hearing about the fire oven roasted veggies that rotate within the menu. We opted for a tried and true classic, brussel sprouts with caramelized bacon bites. Generous portion of beautifully roasted sprouts and beautifully meaty diced bacon, not so small they got lost but not so large they overwhelmed. Honestly I could have tried any of the veggie options! We opted for the fire roasted whole fish which was branzino that night - delicious! It's funny with the bacon the veggies were actually quite rich so the fish was a wonderful counter balance to offset that richness but still provide luscious flavors to enjoy. Beautifully complex, buttery fish, pop of flavor from the olives. Just lovely. We finished the meal with the coconut panna cotta with yuzu caramel - wow! If this is on the menu get it! Absolutely lovely spur of the moment kick off to birthday week for my love. Thanks for helping kick it off right! Service was impeccable, waitstaff was friendly, it was fun to watch at the counter the action in the kitchen. Price point is perfect.
