It's so cozy and I learned their space is much bigger than I thought. They have a back section (where we were seated) the lighting was very dim but it definitely gave that romantic vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Since it was Valentine's Day, they had a prefixed menu and each item paired with wine, I did not mind at all! Just had a great brunch! The omelette was amazing and delicious. But I was really impressed with the excellent service. My servers, Leo and Maria, were gracious and timely with everything. I can't stand when you go to a nice upscale place and you have to ask for everything. "Can I please have another drink, more coffee, hot sauce, silverware, etc. etc..." Service has gone downhill everywhere. But these servers stand out and were great, thank you! I'd post a photo of the omelette but I ate it right up. It was so good. read more

Went for a late afternoon snack at the Plaza Bistro Bar. Ordered the bruschetta (really good), a mixed green salad (also good), and an old-fashioned--which was unfortunately not good. Anytime a bartender adds soda water to an old-fashioned, it completely ruins it. I drank it anyway, but I never thought I'd have to ask whether they put soda water in an old-fashioned ‍. Service was slow. After finishing my meal, I asked for the check. Instead of bringing it, the bartender made drinks for guests who weren't even at the bar (they were outside smoking), then took another order from a different table. I had to ask again before finally getting my bill, at least 15 minutes later. It had been awhile since we had gone out in the Sonoma Square and the Plaza Bistro was the only place that had openings. It was still quite warm outside in the evening, so we sat inside with the AC. Our waiter gave us some time to peruse the menu before ordering. For starters we got the fried calamari and the caprese salad. The breading for the calamari was a little thick, however the sauce was delicious. The caprese salad was chilled and no complaints. For mains, we got the Schnitzel, Seared Scallops, and Chicken Picatta. The schnitzel was fried in the same oil as the calamari, so the seafood flavor came out. The meat was tender and the mushroom sauce was amazing. The scallops were a tad overcooked so they were a little chewy. The chicken picatta was the best dish, with a lovely sauce, but the mashed potatoes could have used some salt. This was a good restaurant for tourists coming in town and may need a meal after a few winery tastings, but there are better options for food on the Square for locals. Hopefully this was an off night for the kitchen. read more

Schnitzel the last time wasn't as good. More bland sauce. Spaetzle over done. Chicken battered and not totally cooked through had a mealy mouthfeel instead of crispy. 5 out of 10. So much potential for true greatness when it's done well. I've gained enough confidence that I would come back. I will send it back next time if it's a repeat performance. read more

I came here with friends and one of them has a service dog. As soon as we arrived, we were approached by the owner saying " you can't bring the dog and asked for id". We told him that he was not supposed to ask for an id". He rudely disagreed. They charge $5 for a soft drink with lots of ice with no refills. Our server was amazing! She was very attentive and constantly checked in on us. She also gave suggestions that were honest. Place is mellow, we sat outside, nice vice of the park. The food was pretty good and decently priced. I wish I would've tried more of the foods. I got the steak, and it was a good size and surprisingly good, loved the sauce. Odd experience. Stopped in with a small bridal party of 6 after trips to a couple wineries. The place was not very busy at all (slightly after lunch) but the waiter seemed annoyed having to serve us. His whole vibe before taking our order was strange. He was pretty inflexible about the menu for reasonable requests (one person asked for pasta instead of potato and the other asked if she could just have some meatballs as she wasn't hungry). He categorically said they couldn't do that/didn't have them. Huh? It's an Italian restaurant...I tried to stay safe with a hamburger and it was very mediocre. read more

Horrible experience. Made reservations on Valentine's Day. Drove 30 minutes out of town to come here based on their menu on their website. With no mention on their site or on google, they had a fixed menu that is completely different than is shown. Nothing we could eat(vegetarian). Absolutely ridiculous to not have any warning of this on their front page of a website. Completely ruined our Valentines Day that we had planned for the surrounding area afterwards, because now I had to frantically find SOMEWHERE ELSE that isn't hiding their fixed menus. read more

Being long time sonoma residents, we have eaten at the plaza bistro countless times. Friday night we were shocked to discover they are now charging eight dollars to taste the wine by the glass, before you order it. And their wine list is completely changed from the last time we were there. When we questioned the manager regarding this, he first refused to give us his name. Then he admitted his name was Martin. Then he told us it's against the law to give a free tasting, which is totally not true. When we mentioned that the Swiss and EDK to name a few do not charge for tasting he said, "then go to the Swiss!" This experience is the reason we will not be eating there again. read more

It was an overcast sky with weather rapidly deteriorating. It was time for lunch. Plaza Bistro is located right on the charming, treed central square and is easy to find. It was a weekday, so parking was not a problem...but weekends and holidays are a different story. Intimately cozy, there are a few dining rooms with windows facing the square. Linen on the tables, this Mediterranean Italian restaurant is staffed by what sound like Italian waiters. Very charming. Menus are different for lunch and dinner. We were there for lunch and they offer some specials to this limited, but adequate menu of selections. I had the special lunch ravioli ($24) and it was very excellent with five large ravioli covered with a rich tomato Bolognese. Super good. Wife had a bowl of excellent beef barley soup ($12) that she really enjoyed. Two dinner rolls were extra at $3. Atmosphere, service, food and class. Nice date place. read more

We were in Sonoma Ca for an event. We decided to have a bite at The Plaza Bistro as it seemed nice at the entrance and within the bar. When we walked in, we asked the Receptionist (ending up being the owner) if they could seat us. He advised there was no reservation for us but could give us a small table in a small corner in which we excepted.. Our friend (a Couple) and us order dinner and I order also a Aperol Spritz. Unfortunately when the Aperol Spritz was delivered I couldn't taste the alcohol which usually is either Champagne or Prosecco. I complained to the waiter and he told me that's how the bar makes those type of drinks. To make it short, I went to the bar and explained. The bartender was nice and added more Champange. Now where's the bread. When we asked the waitress she said there is a charge for bread and its delivered in two slices which would be a charge!!!!!! WHAT!!!!!!! We did order the 2 slices.........................Since there was a plate of Shell Fish with lots of dipping sauce it would have been better to have some bread. Now here's the topper. When we got our check, I was talking to our friends. The owner came up and abruptly told us that they need the table and that we had to leave.. How RUDE......................We understand how important it is to turn tables but this was within severally minutes after we got our check. I have been a long-time customer of this downtown restaurant. Today for lunch I ordered their"special"" battered fried ling-cod and French fries. I was very disappointed. Two small pieces of fish buried In a mound of French Fries. Price: $25. I spoke to our waiter and said that is how they are served, claiming it was 4 ounces of fish? I doubted that.
