Just had a wonderful dinner here for my son's 42nd birthday. There were six of us, four adults, 2 children. The meal was delicious, pasta, great chopped salad, perfectly cooked steak. The waiter was very pleasant and helpful. Service was excellent. Love visiting sonoma and you must experience eating at swiss restaurant at least once. the service was pretty quick. We got lucky to sit right away probably easy for a table for 2. Good date place or come visit with friends. The ambiance is moderately noisy. It's good for groups and spacious so expect the chatter. The food was great! We have one recommendation: go and get a Glarafee cocktail, and make sure to ask the bartender to tell you the story of the drink.

This is my second time here. Last summer, we ate in the front patio with Cako, but this time my friends and I ate in the back patio. It's nice in the back though the heater closest to us wasn't working but what the heck. Good food and friends is what it was about. The fried cheese ravioli was delicious! I should've had another for dinner! I also had the clam chowder since it was chilly and it was good! Since we had been drinking of the grape all day, I had the rigatoni bolognese....soooo good! The ladies had the pan roasted rosemary chicken which they loved. We also had the chocolate cake which went great with the rest of the wine. It was a great way to end the day! We stopped by to eat here after a morning of wine tasting in Calistoga. The service was very good and the food was decent. My brother had went in to ask for a table in the back patio since we had a dog with us and he had mentioned to the hostess that we had a dog. She made arrangements for us to go to the back patio to eat but upon waling back there we saw another family had their great pyrenees at their table with them and the hostess then told my brother that I had to tie my dog up outside..next to this dog that I didn't know and many feet away from the table she was seating us at. She said that dogs are not allowed inside of the back patio but had to be tied up outside. Uh..no thanks. Unless you are willing to pay for the vet bill if the dog that is 5xs the size of my dog decided to do something to her then I rather not just tie my dog up outside. My boyfriend and I opted to go to the front patio, which is VERY DOG-FRIENDLY by the way. They even gave her a water bowl and many dog treats. Bread was served and our orders were taken very quick. The waitress was very attentive and made sure to keep checking in on us. To add, she was the only waitress working in the front and her service was better than any other place I had been too AND she was working 7-9 tables alone. I ordered the seafood pappardelle ($22 I think) and it was very delicious. The scallops and shrimp were so fresh and the sauce was not too heavy. My dad told me he ordered the salmon which came out served with some kind of hair on it (...uhh that's appetizing) and my mom's ravioli was overpriced for the amount she was served. Stopes at a gas station a little bit out of town and asked the locals: where's the best place for lunch in Sonoma? Without missing a beat, they replied: The Swiss Hotel. I. Am. So. Glad. I. Asked!!!! The atmosphere is incredible, the service stellar, and the food is beyond delicious. We shared the meatball appetizer and it was -plenty- for a lunch. A glass of wine and a flute of prosseco and we were in heaven. If you're in town, or even just passing thru- this is certainly worth the stop. read more

It's unfortunate that after a decade of our family going here I must said after our last family outing at the Swiss hotel last Thursday, we will not be a returning customers. The host was not so friendly and definitely not kid friendly at all. We sat for about 15-20 minute before our waitress came by and she too was not friendly. When I place the order I can sense she doesn't like her job and was not pleasant to even talk to. The food was not the same quality. My pasta was so bland, the fried calamari was slathered with a lot of sauce all over and under it making it way too unappealing for the eyes and taste overbearing. The food just doesn't seem like it used to be and the service is not pleasant. It's really unfortunate because the Swiss Hotel that we remember going for 10 years have now and will be a thing in the past for us. read more

This establishment is old & old school. Sit inside or out on the porch overlooking the square. Since I've never eaten here, I can't comment on the food. But I do know that they've revamped the menu. This place is adorable, and my girls and I ate in the sunny back patio last week during our wine tour. They start you off with freshly baked bread and olive oil/vinaigrette, which we scarfed down. My friend and I shared pizza #4 which had salami, olives, artichoke hearts, and cheese on it. I think it's more than enough pizza to share between two girls. I'd give it a 3 star rating because the olives were intensely salted and it was a little overwhelming. My other two friends shared pizza #2, and I would have to give that 4 stars. Their pizza was delicious and the mushrooms were so good and fresh! I also tried a bite of my friend's roasted eggplant sandwich which was absolutely disgusting, but the pulled pork sandwich was delicious! Tourist with a bar review. Heard about this interesting drink they serve here called "Glariffee" a one of a kind chilled Irish coffee drink. It can be ordered with or without cream. Both are practically the same in taste, just the one with cream has a lighter tone and subtle difference in flavor. $5 a pop, it's a nice end of the evening finisher. The bar is tiny,but the action is outside, the seating is first come first serve and the wait can be too tedious. On the weekend evening we stopped in, the crowd was mostly thirties to late fifties. Few unattainable, unable to tame cougars on a prowl and everyone else. LoL. The bartender could have been a bit more attentive, but I guess he was attending to his repeats first. read more

I enjoy the Swiss. Whenever I visit my family I always look forward to sitting on the patio, enjoying a glass (okay, well, a bottle) of wine, a pizza, and a great people watching experience. The staff is friendly, homey and the bar is always a cultural experience. A lot of locals, a little divey, and it's own little laws that are signature to old school bars in the states. The patio out front is the best, and they do have a back dining room which is more formal, yet still casual, as well as group dining. I think they have a patio in the back, but, I've never eaten in it. They do have a small hotel, but I have not visited or stayed in it. I am sure that it would be quite fun for young people (ala hostel style), since it's quite a noisy spot on the weekends and late nights due to the bars on the square. read more

We sat in the back in the patio, it was a little stuffy but we were happy to get a table for a last minute reservation late on a Saturday night, we ordered the calamari appetizer it was very good it had a light breading and it was very crispy, we ordered the cheese pizza the dough was delicious tender and crispy it had a few different kinds of cheese super cheesy we liked it so much we ordered two more pizzas to take home, I ordered the New York strip steak with a peppercorn sauce it was delicious it was old school perfect the steak was juicy cooked to perfection medium rare full of flavor the peppercorn sauce was the perfect touch for this wonderful steak, the service was ok not bad we ordered so much food it just kept coming we had a slow leisurely dinner the quiet ending to our girls weekend what a fantastic time we had lots of champagne laughs and wonderful food! This was a wonderful little cozy place. You have to ask to sit out on the back patio; nice cozy and even during the colder time, they have heaters. The waiter was fun and very informative about the menu. The food was great. Chic parm was delicious and we changed it up a bit to fit our taste buds. The fried chicken was a special with mashed potatoes and green beans were super. To top it off we had dessert. Their signature liquor and ice cream concoction was wonderful and the blueberry/lemon dessert was lite but had a full flavor and was a nice end to a wonderful dinner. Doing a little gift purchase up front at the desk was fun because the young lady was warm and chatty. Everything was great but the customer service was friendly but forced. My husband and I are people-oriented and noticed they weren't as warm as servers should be and tend to be. Regardless, we ordered the burrata with crostinis for an app. The burrata was like melted butter, but kind of bland. I ended up shaking some table salt on it to be more palatable. For our entrees, we ordered the linguini and prawns and the halibut with potatoes. Both dishes were delectable. I'm not usually a pasta person, but it was so good. The linguini was lemony, zesty, spicy and perfect. The prawns were an added bonus. We looked at the dessert menu apres dinner, but nothing stood out for us to stay longer and order sugar. It would have been 5-stars if the service was warmer and friendlier. They didn't maintain eye-contact with us. The vibe was off. read more

What a great place to visit in the Sonoma Square! Fun and friendly service with small town charm. I decided to give this restaurant a shot today after exploring their reviews on Yelp. It seemed like there were people who absolutely loved it here and some jaded folks who would never come back. I just had to try it for myself. I was immediately seated upon arrival and offered a menu with the daily specials on the back. Before I could blink an eye, I had my coffee and assorted breads with a delicious olive oil and balsamic dipping sauce. I have to admit there was just so many items that looked delicious for lunch, but I decided to go with a classic... their Chicken Parmesan to warm me up a bit and try something different than a sandwich. You could tell this was freshly pounded chicken breast with a nice fried crust. It was perfectly tender and savory. My server Sharon was very accommodating and attentive. She made me laugh at least twice during my visit in a professional way and made me feel special as a guest. I can see why so many regulars come in to join the tourists here. Gayle and I arrived in Sonoma during one early Friday evening, checked into our place, and then headed over to the Plaza for some window shopping and an early snack. After considering one of the many wine tasting establishments, we were instead drawn to the pleasant and comfortable outdoor Patio of the Swiss Hotel. The evening was a little cool, but the outdoor heaters, friendly service, and interesting fellow clientele tipped the decision balance to the alternative of hanging out in the old school cozy bar area. Gayle order wine, I opted for a tasty Porter, and we shared some bread and an order of Calamari. We relaxed, chatted, but most importantly decompressed after a long and complicated week. That's all we wanted and needed, and we were grateful for the opportunity. The only key negative to the evening was near the end when the folks at the table nearest the sidewalk left and were replaced by 4 folks who immediately pulled up some extra chairs, quickly lit up, and obliviously filled the entire area with their obnoxious cigarette smoke. We were close to leaving anyway, but I'll remind myself next time to check the City's Smoking Ordinance and proceed accordingly. read more

Attended a private dinner here for about 50 people. We started out in the back yard where there was some crudites, stuffed mushrooms and crab cakes. We then moved into the room right off the yard. It was a room filled with antique-y items. With 50 people it got quite loud. The one thing that stands out about this place is lack of consistency, plates served side by side were no where near the same portion size and in some cases not all the ingredients appeared on each plate. The Caesar salad was very over dressed and was soggy; the salmon was served raw and many of the steaks served were cooked very over done, but at least they were tender. The best part of the meal was the nutty caramel sundae. Overall it wasn't an impressive meal, but if the kitchen paid more attention to cooking and consistency it would be much better. read more

I had the butternut squash ravioli, and all I could taste was oil. My brother had a pizza margarita and that too was very oily. The oyster Cesar salad was enjoyable. The Swiss......ahhhhh. I've been going to this European style bar since I turned 21. Not only is it a fun bar but they have amazing food, and it's right on the plaza. The bar outside has heat lamps and often attracts a large crowd due to being right on the street. It's a lively atmosphere that often is standing room only. The bar inside is small but sexy and dark with a historic feel and eclectic art. The dining room is beautiful and deserves a more formal attire in my opinion. This spot is absolutely fantastic. The backyard patio is tranquil and lovely and if you come on a day with gorgeous weather, be prepared to spend hours leisurely enjoying your meal. I split the Baked Brie with my friend to start and it was perfectly done. The garlic was roasted to perfection and more or less melted in my mouth. For entrees, I got the baked rigatoni bolognese and it was so big I couldn't finish it. But what I did have was good. It was a little more...watery...than most bolognese I've had but the flavor was nice. Service is attentive, even with the leisurely feel.
