I went to The Dunes for over 3 months and it saved my life - no questions asked. I've been to…read moreseveral other rehabs - all of which are considered to be the top in the country - but The Dunes stands apart in so many ways. The second I walked into the front doors, it felt like anything was possible. And this was a far cry from the way I'd felt for years...completely and utterly hopeless. The biggest things that separate The Dunes from other treatment centers are: Holistic approach: In addition to things like DBT and relapse prevention, we learned mindfulness meditation and took part in amazingly powerful experiences like equine therapy. (Those horses will change your life!) Furthermore, they take trauma really seriously here. Their trauma specialists, Annie, is amazing. She does this super cutting edge thing called EMDR (which I think stands for "eye movement...something something")....I don't know, it's super high tech...but I was blown away by how effective my sessions were with her. It was like things or memories that I would previously never, ever mention became tolerable. They also had some amazing yoga teachers and acupuncturist that were instrumental in my treatment. Non-Punitive Environmental: A lot of people seem to think folks who wind up with drug or alcohol problems have been "bad" and need to be punished. On the contrary, people with substance abuse problems are often wonderful, gentle human beings who are self medicating the only way they know how and to eliminate a level and type of suffering most non-addicts have a hard time understanding. I literally went to a rehab in Augusta, GA just weeks before I wound up at The Dunes. It was run like a bootcamp and by the time I left their I wanted to use more than I ever had prior. This isn't a moral shortcoming that can be willed or disciplined away. It's a disease. The fact that I wasn't treated like a criminal and instead like a sick person getting well made all the difference for me personally. True One-on-One Time with Highly Experienced Staff: These guys (and gals) only have 9 beds but a staff of like 30. The amount of personal attention each patient gets its just insane. And I can't emphasize how important that is. It allows them to truly personalize the treatment plan for each patient to create the highest chance of success. They also do a really good job with aftercare planning, i.e. making sure patients' transition back into the real world is as safe and seamless as possible...something I've seen other rehabs completely overlook.

I wonder if the people who run this dump would put their parents in here, my Aunt who is 99 went in originally for rehabilitation from a fall as she was recovering she had a stroke and declined was admitted as a long term patient moved from first floor rehabilitation which is beautiful and bright and clean to the second floor which is a Hell hole, spackle on walls with no paint, filthy walls, dirty floors, wires hanging out of ceiling which I'm sure is a violation my Aunt fell out of bed which sent her to the hospital so their solution is to put a filthy gym mat on the floor next to her bed, when we complained about the mat we were told we could request a new one! So if you don't complain your getting a filthy mat, what happens to the poor people who don't have an advocate! Was also told by other visitor for my Aunt that they heard the staff yelling at the residents and the head nurse is a witch she was nasty from the start. I will be calling the department of health because if they had been there to check this place out and it's still like this someone is getting paid off. It should get 0 stars!!!

Tina Marie is empathetic thinks on her feet goes up and above to provide excellent to care. Tina Marie can find a solution and does anything she can to provide you with the most comfortable safe detox possible with a smile that lights up the room. Sephora also is an excellent nurse with patience and compassion who helped me continuously with a smile. The physician assistant Antionnette also understands the alcoholic attic dual diagnosed and understands that care is not just a cookie cutter fit every alcoholic or attic has different medical needs and yes this nursing staff sees you as the beautiful person you are. Anna is an amazing tech there who goes over and above and works diligently does her job exceptionally. As I was going to bed I looked over and three patients were just surrounding her because she is empathetic but also instills wisdom sobriety care and concern for each one that contributed to sobriety. Helen is also a five star employee she is efficient keeps her word and will take a moment just to chat to the broken hearted like me. I have attended Sunrise three times and always felt loved and cared for and could see that everyone was doing there best . Tyrone and all the techs are quite amazing. Housekeeping does their best but sometimes cannot get everything thing done because one girl on a day is not enough. Here is what saddens me something has broken at Sunrise. I as an alcoholic an attic of course am not perfect and can be hard to handle and my behavior can be inappropriate. I can tell you what my concerns are for you the next patient. During this stay I was let down many times I was told to keep my word I cannot tell you how many requests where I was told yes I'll help you and then hours would pass and nothing. I believe administration is at fault. The center takes all your toiletries and places them in a box and in the morning you ask for them to shower after a few days of someone saying yes I'll get them and then it never happens . I had no shampoo but you can get it at the desk well I did ask and there was no body wash or shampoo I had to wash my self with my sock as a wash cloth and use soap from a dispenser three times there because I could not get my needs met to take care of myself. Also the counseling staff I believe is doing the best they can but they are stretched out to the max and what I found is no team work there if you need a phone card or if you would like to drink soda or purchase cigarettes you must fill out a form and you are told they will be filled by 11. This is not true bring your unsealed cigarettes if you can because everyday except for when Jessica is handling it this never happened so you follow the rules fill out the form and then time and again the be they were not processed until three four or five and you must stay vigillant and keep asking over and over till you know you are being a nuisance but realize you must to get your order processed they used to have drivers to get u there and get you home be prepared to get yourself home. I lived in Syracuse the last time had to Uber to penn to get on the Amtrak very alone felling very vulnerable and now put in a high risk situation to drink. is very dangerous to say to someone by take care bye and be left on the curb. The administration was neglectful there are four counselors in total and if one is extremely busy and I needed help there was another just out there sitting in the vitals chair shooting the breeze while at least four patients needed something I asked this counselor to help me process something or could you help me with phone card and was told no I am not your counselor. I was very confused at my job we work as a team and if my coworker is busy I help them as best I can even though I'm not assigned to that area I can help we have the same job title I do it. Also I was neglected ignored lied to mislead asked for help with calling my eap asked for paperwork stating where I was told yes and again no follow thru I asked to call my eap rep but because I was not following theirsuggetion I was told I cannnot help you. I was then passed by ignored neglected and abused from that moment on.i asked to see counselor was told yes and it never happened. I needed to address my truth and life. I couldn't go to the rehab they wanted me to I had to go home first to prepare I was then told I can't help you when never received any paperwork was ignored from there forward and also neglected my parent was coming to get me and no one told me they just kept walking by me as I sat in filthy clothes and was refused my clean clothes and laundry detergent the administrative assistant abused her power and was dishonest st I saw counselors and administration who have lost the There way. No one can do this alone and Wellbridge provides support from counselors while providing a sense of belonging within a beautiful community. In many ways they gave me my life back and I am grateful and blessed to be a part of their alumni. I am planning on attending their alumni events and hope to speak there in the future. I know that according to AA orthodoxy, I'd assuredly be considered one, but in my own subjective opinion...I'm not. But my relationship to alcohol was definitely problematic, and at one low point, I did turn to AA. I was ambivalent about the inflexibility and rigidity of the AA program (the "higher power" stuff struck a wrong chord with me) and ultimately, I sought the path to sobriety within myself and from other resources. But I recognize the efficacy and value of what AA does, and I know other people that it has worked for. And even in my own admittedly limited experience with them it was helpful. The 1st drink I can remember is my father wordlessly handing me a beer as a teen on a hot summer day after I had mowed the grass. To my mind, it was an acknowledgement that if I hadn't quite achieved my "Officially a Man" status, I was on the path. My parents weren't alcoholics, but they drank. I had smoked some weed in high school, toyed with opium, and hadn't really liked them enough to pursue them. I didn't like the taste of beer, but I liked everything else about it. I became a "social drinker." It loosened me up, and if it accomplished nothing else, it made me feel good. Low point for me was when I was in my early 30s. My oldest friend's mother was dying of terminal cancer. Towards the end, my friend was at his father's house in Wayne, and he suggested we take a walk down to a pub in Packanack Lake and get a beer. One beer turned into 2. A guy was there whose brother had gone to grade school with me, and he bought us a drink. The bartender gave us vile-tasting shots. More drinks, a little jukebox. In a few hours, we were wasted. We wandered back up to his Dad's house, stopping briefly at our old junior high school (good memories for him; bad for me-- I got kicked out twice for fighting and insubordination). I had been driving my Dad's car, as my own was in the shop. Back at his father's house, his wife pulled him inside and I staggered to my Dad's car parked at the curb, fully intending to drive home. I told myself to be cool, focus, and I'd be ok. As I turned off the exit from Rt 23 onto Rt. 287, I began throwing up on myself. I thought, "Focus...you can deal with the puke later. Just get home." And then I blacked out. I drove home from Wayne to Basking Ridge in a state of black-out. The next day, in excruciating agony, I called in "sick" at work, made an attempt to clean out the vomit from Dad's car (I knew I had to tell him what had happened, and when I called him, he yelled at me like I was 10 years old again: "Boy, you never learn your lesson, do you?!?"), popped 2 Vicodin, and drove into NYC. I wasn't oblivious to the enormity of what was going on. I may have been self-destructive, but I wasn't suicidal. And I knew enough about myself to know that if I had injured or killed someone on that black-out drive home, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself. In other words, I knew I was in trouble. AA was recommended to me. My "sponsor" was a young guy (older than me) who was pretty humorless (not that there was much humor in the situation). As I remember it, he wanted me to attend 10 meetings in a row at different places and let him know how I made out. The 1st place I went to was in New Brunswick. My impression was positive. The people spoke plainly of their painful, often tragic, experiences, and their sincere objective in achieving control over the addiction that had taken over their lives. Afterwards, a young guy gave me the "Big Book," the AA "bible," published in 1939. My 2nd meeting was at a church in Harlingen. I think I picked a wrong time, as they were having a celebration of some sort. One speaker told jokes, like an alcoholic Woody Allen, and I wasn't impressed. My mood was decidedly non-celebratory. The 3rd day, I had a car accident (not alcohol related) and told my sponsor (who also was involved in Gambler's Anonymous) that I wouldn't be able to make the 3rd meeting. I never heard from him again. And I never attended another meeting. But I read the "Big Book," and, despite the fact that it was decades old, there was a timeless quality to the testimony of the people speaking in it. Their stories resonated with me-- maybe not in all the details, but it made a significant impact. My sobriety wasn't immediate, but I'm sober now, for many years. And AA was a part of that process. One drinking buddy died of a massive heart attack in his 30s. Another has stage-4 liver failure, still drinks, and has to get his stomach drained every few months. I wish they had been able to get their lives back on track. I wish they had involved themselves in AA. I passed the "Big Book" onto 1 old friend who was able to sober up after crashing into a tree and having to have his face reconstructed. He read the book, attended AA meetings, and has been sober for 11 years. AA works. At the very least, it helps.

In my education and training the history of the program and the Big Book were mandatory training for working in Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health. I think the principles are valuable in life period. If you are interested I'm sure your public library has a copy. AA is also definitely beneficial for friends and family of the alcoholic. Everyone can get support by attending the meetings. It's my experience it's easy to find a meeting near me.
