This was a very disappointing experience. I contacted the salon via email about making an appointment and received a response right away. I replied to confirm. Come the day of the appointment, I show up but nobody is there. I contact the owner via email and phone. The owner insists I never confirmed my appointment. On my end, I have an email in my sent folder that shows I confirmed. No bounce back or anything strange. The owner keeps insisting via text they never received a response from my email. How is this my fault as the potential new customer? On my end, it looks like I confirmed. The owner goes on about their intake process for customers but I'm a new customer so how would I know? This could be a misunderstanding but I felt like the owner was calling me a liar and I wasted my precious time on this business. When hair can cost upwards of $200, I'm not wasting my money on this business who has no customer service etiquette or respect for me. Unfortunately the system makes me leave - star. read more

I'm really happy with my cut. I had my hair cut 2 months prior, I have long thick wavy hair, and wasn't really happy with it. It just needed blended, and was heavy in some areas. I was told I'm not a good fit for the salon because I expressed my concerns that I didn't like the beige looking toner on my lightened hair. I also was told to go to another salon a few weeks later to buy the Davines shampoo they sell. The salon and products are incredible ,but if you aren't happy with the work don't be surprised when you're told that your not a good fit or I don't think I can make you happy. This is after me being kind & leaving a 20% tip. I was also told to go home and wash my hair w/ Dawn dish water soap to have the toner fade after a 250$ color service . She not only asked me about how I wanted my hair cut but also my daily hair routine, so she could accommodate both. OK. I admit it. It has been YEARS since I've had my haircut and styled in a way that I truly fell in love with. I've had some bad experiences in the past with hair nightmares and it was over three years ago that I said "Enough! I'm not cutting it." Until Now. I have thick, curly hair and I decided to grow it out and donate it to Locks of Love. When my hair was long enough to donate, I knew I wanted to find a true stylist to cut my hair, because it was going to be a big change. I asked a friend who her stylist was because her hair always looked like she just came from the salon. That's when she recommended Carolyn at Gloss Beauty Salon in downtown Willow Glen. I met Carolyn for a consultation and I was immediately greeted by her smiling face and I knew as soon as we sat down and talked about our ideas that this was who I wanted to style my hair. Now I want to shout from the rooftops how much I LOVE my new hairstyle! I LOVE IT!!! And, by the way, the price was incredible, too! Very reasonable. Probably the best little salon in the bay area. You get accomodated by the lovely receptionist when you walk in. They always offer wine, tea or water to sip on throughout your appointment. The people are really close which makes you feel like part of the family when you walk in. It is a little salon across the street from Longs Drugs. They have 4 stylists; Liesl, Steve, Rosealee and Cindy. I get my hair cut from Cindy and when I first went in I had super super super long hair. I was always afraid to get my hair cut short because the one time I did I got a BOB that looked dreadful with my chubby cheeks! But.... Cindy has been slowly chopping at my hair and now I do somewhat have a bob! Only I love this one!!! I have never trusted anyone with my hair and now I just tell Cindy to do what she wants because it ALWAYS turns out amazing. The salon isn't as pricey as most places- and pretty standard for the bay area. The only difference is that whoever your stylist is- you will come out looking like a million bucks even if you only got a $70 do. read more

Carolyn is just fantastic. I really couldn't be happier with the outcome of my hair. I was looking for a new stylist that would listen, not be pushy, and would actually do a good job on my hair. She doesn't charge an arm and a leg, either, I feel her prices are on par with most places. I went in with not so great highlights- some came out white and some were still yellow, since I've got dark hair to begin with. She suggested a few colors to cover them with, as well as base colors for the rest of my hair. I wanted bangs and she really made sure I wanted them since that's a bit of a commitment. I'm glad I did it and she did a beautiful job on them! She trimmed exactly what I wanted - just enough to clean up the ends. I'm super happy with my hair and experience and am looking forward to my next appointment! I should really go see Carolyn more often. But I'm such a simple hair girl that I often forget that it's been 6 months since I've gotten a hair cut. Usually my hair is in a ponytail or clipped back with a pin. That's it. But I have to remind myself of how pretty I always feel after I see Carolyn. Who tries a new salon two weeks before getting married??! I am a brave girl. I've been in the Bay Area for just over a year and a half and have had the hardest time finding a salon and stylist that's right for me. I've tried recommendations from friends and good ol' Yelp! with no luck until now. I've been growing my hair out from a pixie cut for the last two years, but have had plenty of trims and "attempted" re-shapings along the way. Though I've wanted to keep my hair long, I've also been wanting to add some layers to keep the cut interesting and flattering. I've tried about five different people over the last few years and each time I've left with barely a trim and negative $50-$80. I have an awesome hairstyles for my wedding, but unfortunately she doesn't do cuts, so I've had somewhat of a predicament. With just two weeks to go until my wedding, I decided I needed one last haircut. I'd had what I thought would be last last in February, but the stylist didn't do quite what I was looking for, so I decided to give it one more go. Enter Carolyn from Gloss Beauty & Barber Lounge. I was quite nervous to try a new stylist and salon just two weeks before my wedding, but Carolyn's glowing reviews and great photos made it a fairly easy decision. At the start of my appointment I explained my situation to Carolyn and let her know that my main goal was to make sure my bangs were shaped in a way that would look good with my wedding updo. I also want to keep a few pieces in the front loose, so she cut some more face framing layers that would fall nicely when my hair is pulled back. She also cut some shorter layers around the crown to give my hair more shape and volume. Needless to say, this was by far the best hair cut I've had in the Bay Area - even my fiance agreed. Carolyn listened to what I wanted and wasn't too shy to make suggestions about what she thought would work. Aside from the haircut, I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the salon. As others have mentioned it's pretty small and laid back. I'm not sure if they have a receptionist (there wasn't one there the day I was in), so if no one answers the phone, you can email to make an appointment. I have only been to Gloss once, but I have found my new place! I saw Carolyn for the first time and I was very pleased!! She cut and colored my hair just how I described and really listened to what I wanted to achieve with my hair. Carolyn is super sweet and I never felt like she was rushing to get me out of the salon. She also took the time to show me how to style my hair a particular way; she didn't rush through it. This is also a husband/wife owned salon. It's just the two of them and the atmosphere is great! I have been back in the area for a year now and after trying other places in downtown Campbell, which is where I live, finally got hooked up with Rosealee. Thank goodness my favorite bartender has fabulous hair and recommended her to me! Rosealee does some amazing highlights, lemme tell ya! They give my fine hair the appearance of depth. She knows a bit about bangs, as well. My cut is always manageable due to the great layering and grows out very well, due to my lack of funding for more frequent visits :/ When I move again I hope I can afford to fly her out to do my hair ;) The salon is great, everyone is really friendly and cool. My hair was about waist length and very very dry and damaged. Itold Carolyn I wanted a cut that would give me volume and mabey add in lots of layers. Then she worked her magic and did just that! My hair looks and feels thicker, healthier, and MUCH more managable! I desperately needed a color fix on my over highlighted hair I received at another salon. It was growing out in a bad way and rather damaged from the color. CAROLYN to the rescue! She blended the color so beautifully with her high-end products and sheer talent. I am greatly pleased with the ssssuper duper cute cut she gave me! I've been going to Steve at Gloss for years now. Their place is very comfortable, there's always plenty to talk about (if that's your thing), parking is beyond easy and I've never had a bad cut. My first impression was that, although Gloss was initially difficult to reach over the course of a week, this being contrary for me to yelp's indication that they respond within an hour, they were very communicative, attentive and Steve really nice, once we did get in touch. Also, the Davines product-line from Parma is outstanding, so I was impressed to find that they carry it. My appointment was for a partial highlight and hair cut late on a Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, Steve convinced me in the chair that an all-over color would be best; I have no grays, so, now I speculate this was because it's far less labor intensive than foils and he wanted to finish for the day/week(?). The result was a beautiful deep black with a bold, edgy, reddish shine/tint--nice, but not at all what I requested for my medium brown, blonde-highlighted hair. It was a drastic change that should have come with consultation. Furthermore, the hair cut was uneven with one side markedly longer than the other. When I very politely expressed dissatisfaction and requested a correction, Steve's choice was to refund my money (their work is too expensive at approx. $250 for dye-from-a-bottle and cut), rather than help me, which he said he couldn't do. This was well enough and a fine option, but I was surprised he didn't want to help, per my request, and was made to feel like I was difficult or a problem client, which I'm definitely not. My last impression was that they were mean or rude. Deprived of any sense of agency and a bad result, it was a disappointing experience. On my own, I bought Color Oops to get it out by myself and went elsewhere. Blah. *Counter to your response below: Wow -- to insinuate I didn't properly care for or maintain my hair and to write that highlights don't suit my lifestyle...? What utter nonsense! Just wow. I explained that my highlights had grown out (approx. two inches) because I had chosen not to undergo chemical treatments on my hair/scalp during a recent pregnancy.... I made the appointment for highlights, which I am happy to maintain under normal circumstances, and which would certainly have been doable had you been willing to make the effort to add some lowlighting and contrast. You convinced me you would produce a natural, blended look similar to my own, and I was not shown a sample -- I did not expect to leave with a single color so drastically different than my own. When I was given no help toward making it right despite my request for it, I maintain it was unorthodox and felt quite rude. For you to suggest now that your decision not to help me was because of my being somehow unkempt and your making a judgment of my lifestyle! How horrible and weird. Ha! I have been coming here for a few years now: this review is long overdue! I cut my hair with Carolyn and I absolutely love the way she goes about her work and the final result of my hair cut! I have thinning, wavy hair and so l like to keep it short in the pixie style. Carolyn always works with me on my look and asks questions to make sure she has understood what I want. With each haircut, I have learnt what I like and what I do not like about my look and she patiently listens and works with me: I love the way my hairstyle had 'evolved' :) I am also very careful about what product goes on my hair and she understands that and always informs me about what she is using and if I am ok with it. I have also noticed that she uses products that are natural. Also, she is very quick to respond to me if I want a change in scheduling.
