I was in a period in my life where I did not have dental insurance so I was a cash pay patient. When I went in the last time, they insisted that I have x-rays and that if I didn't, they were not "running the business as they were taught ". So as it turns out, Dr. Peters wouldn't even clean my teeth! She talked to me like I was an errant child who was misbehaving. I have never experienced anything like this in my life. I reached out to the owner of the practice and she called me back and apologized for how things happened and even offered to do the x-rays for free. Although I greatly appreciate that, I have no desire to go back and have to see Dr. Peter's. So I advise if you go to this practice make sure you have health insurance or unlimited money because people who don't are not really welcome.

Instead of just going with it, she explained that it was not covered by my insurance and talked to me about several alternatives. When Dr. Walton came in, he also talked to me about options and things I could try to help with my grinding and sleep issues. They were so caring. Unfortunately, I had a cavity so I had to visit again. Once again, they made sure I was as comfortable as possible. I even got to watch Netflix with headphones. I am so happy to have found them.

While the initial exam went fine, my…read moreexperience with the "treatment coordinator" was a major red flag for anyone who values honest healthcare. After the exam, I was presented with a treatment plan for Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) that included nearly $300 in "Arestin" (localized antibiotics) that insurance does not cover. When I requested to proceed with the cleaning first and "wait and see" if my pockets improved before using the medication--which is a standard clinical approach--I was told by the salesperson that the cleaning "doesn't actually do anything without the medicine." He also said there is no option to apply the Arestin at a later date even though the manufacturers own marketing materials state this as one way to apply it. I asked for clarification, and he double-downed, claiming that the SRP provides no benefit without the Arestin and stating that the office refuses to perform the cleaning unless I pay for the medication. Thankfully I sought a second opinion elsewhere and they confirmed that the $300 add ons were unnecessary and unhelpful. As someone who values evidence-based care, I find it incredibly predatory to tell a patient that the "gold standard" medical treatment for gum disease is "useless" unless they buy an optional, out-of-pocket add-on. My second opinion at a private practice confirmed that this was medically inaccurate. The new office provided a transparent plan for the necessary cleaning without any of the high-pressure sales scripts or mandatory "extra" medications. If you are looking for a dental home that respects patient autonomy and provides honest clinical advice, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Yesterday, I was rushing through a busy day, scarfing down some fast food lunch in my car, when I…read moresuddenly chomped down on something very hard and cracked a tooth. Owww!!! I immediately called for help at Dr. Smith's office and they had me come straight there. Within 30 minutes, my mouth was numb and I was having the tooth repaired. I walked out the door an hour later and today it's almost as good as new. Dr. Smith has been caring for my pearly whites for about 12 years and even though I now live & work on the other side of town, I'd never consider switching to a new dentist. She's an Austin institution when it comes to oral health, in practice here since 1981. Probably most important for me is that Dr. Smith is very committed to a pain-free experience for all of her patients. Depending on your level of anxiety and particular dental care needs, you may be able to take a little pill and pretty much be asleep for the entire procedure. She also uses little numbing patches & cream to make getting the injectable anesthetic as comfortable as possible. All of the other people working for Dr. Smith give excellent care, too. The dental assistants and hygienists (the ladies who clean your teeth and do your annual exams) are all super-friendly, pleasant people who tend to stay employed with Dr. Smith for long periods of time. As a patient, you can tell that they like their jobs and are truly happy to help you keep your mouth in good shape. I have worked in the oral health industry, and believe me when I tell you that this is not always the case with other dental practices. Dr. Smith is so cool that she owns the building that houses the esteemed Draught House Pub. Her dental office is upstairs, and every time I go in, I have a little chuckle about getting health care services on top of a bar. Going to have your teeth drilled somehow seems less scary when you know a nerve-calming beverage is theoretically only steps away. The funky old building is also surrounded by beautiful trees that you can view through the windows of each dental operatory. One caveat I would give is that while Dr. Smith does take dental insurance, you usually must pay in full and then wait to be reimbursed by your insurer. This isn't a problem for me now, but back in my starving student days, no way Jose. Though I haven't tried it myself, the office apparently offers payment plans for those who ask. I came here after having a pretty terrible experience at Austin Artistic Dental ( 0/5 stars for AAD). I had to get a crown redone and the staff at LHD helped me feel very welcome and really listened to my concerns and we made a good plan of action to move forward with my crown. At AAD the dentist said I needed 3! crowns to replace some old fillings and that did not feel right to me. When I came to LHD they took some X-rays and said that I did not need the crowns but did need to re-do the fillings which I felt sounded correct. I got the crown fixed, 2 fillings (not amalgam fillings thank god too) and a cleaning done here. My dentist was Dr. Horter and she was just so great. She listened to what I thought about my own needs, validated my concerns and made suggestions that felt right. She worked carefully and took her time to get things right and I feel that she really cared to do a thorough and proper job, which I appreciate because I'm the one that has to live with the dental work. Also they never once asked me to leave a review or incentivized me with free items, which showed me that every 5 star review here is genuine. Also I absolutely love the atmosphere of the clinic and all the staff seem genuinely happy to be there. 10/10 highly recommend :)

Dr. Bernal was able to get me in quickly, thoroughly evaluate the issue, and help relieve the pressure by draining the infected gland. What could have been a stressful experience was handled with professionalism, skill, and genuine care. Throughout the years, Dr. Bernal has always taken the time to explain things clearly, answer questions, and make me feel comfortable in the chair.
