A really good place for a good filling weekend indian buffet with over 30 items and a great indian dessert selection. I love their chicken dum biryani, which is quite authentic. For the price the variety and quality of the buffet is really nice. I always leave super full and satisfied. There is always a decent crowd but not too bad and the service is good too. I especially like thier methi matar malai curry and the lamb curry. Definitely one of the best indian restaurants in the Twin cities area. read more

Our go to Indian place closed near our house. RIP Bawarchi. The family was craving some Dosas so we headed to this place based on the reviews it had on Yelp. Got there as soon as they opened at 5:30 and were seated right away. Once seated though, the service took a little while for them to bring our waters. Ended up and walking over to get our own menus so we could order (the QR code on the table didn't work). Unfortunately, service like this kind of the norm with Indian restaurants in town. The restaurant is clean and casual setting with some ethnic decor. Their menu is pretty extensive. We ordered a couple for appetizers and a coke and beer to start. We wanted the chili prawns but were informed that they didn't have that so we opted for chili fish and chicken lollipops. The chicken lollipops were very flavorful and tasty. Some of the better ones I have had in the cities. The fish was good but very very spicy. So no one besides me could eat it and even I couldn't do more than a few. Note for future. The beer was cold and they provided a cold mug for it which I thought was a nice touch. We ordered dosas for our entree and an order of Chola bhatura. One kid's cheese dosa. One kids geometry dosa. A masala dosa and a mysore masala dosa. The kids food came out first and was a hit with the kiddos. The rest of the food also came out pretty quick. The dosas had their "masala" (curried potatoes) in a separate bowl. I haven't seen that before unless you ask for it on the side. Not a deal breaker or anything, just an observation. The dosas were good. Though could have been a little crispy (we had asked for crispy). The flavors were good. The acompanying chutneys and the potatoes were flavorful. Over all good dosas and satisfied the craving we had. The chola bhatura was average. the bread was perfectly fluffy and hot while not being too oily. The chola were ok. Not bad but just average. I also got their special mutton biryani togo so I would have lunch the next day and it was tasty with tender meat and fluffy rice with good flavors. All in all this was a good experience and we would go back to have their lollipops and try some other items on the menu. This might be our new goto south indian restaurant. read more

Lovely South Asian restaurant near Eden Prairie Center. This place is an absolute gem for those wanting spice in their life. We went thrifting at The Prop Shop and needed some energy after looking thru all the diamonds in the rough. The restaurant is very close to other South Asian retailers, so you know the food has to be tasty with the competition. We went fairly close to opening 520pm or so and were seated promptly by the very cordial and polite staff. We ordered multiple items and the food came surprisingly quick. Chicken 65; not artificially colored. This chicken was tender and quite nice. The sauce wasn't overly spicy, but you could up the ante if desired. Dosa; crispy and the potatoes came on top which was nice since you could control the portion. It came with 4 chutneys; a warm dal? Coconut, tomato? And peanut. Good variety and a delight. Garlic naan, was not as crispy as I would like. Overall a good carb to accompany the meal. Lamb Vindaloo: very meaty stewed lamb dish. Overall, nothing stood out given the price point. Did not have the obligatory tandoori chicken and the naan was even mediocre. Most interesting thing was the fried shrimp and fried sardines. If anything, bring some friends/family and go for the bahubali thali! This is a truly site to behold and a great photo op for all you foodies out there. 6 of us went to try the infamous bahubali thali on a Sunday evening and we were not disappointed. We opted for the vegetarian version and it came with so many different options-mainly South Indian style dishes. Given the vast quantity of options you are bound to like some more than the others-some of my favorites were the paneer biryani, sambhar/daals, Szechuan rice, and idli/chutneys. Ambiance of the restaurant is super casual. The Restaurant said 6 people max for this although I definitely think they should increase the limit. We ended up with a lot of leftovers. They must also be called in advance to reserve the baahubali thali given the quantity of food involved and the fact that they only offer it on certain days of the week. My wife and I were out for a lunch and we went here after doing some Yelp research. It looked good and we entered and we longed for the buffet, but alas, COVID denied us. Our server brought over some bottles of Costco water and took our order. Here is what we got. The grilled whole fish was absolutely fabulous. Just the right amount of spiciness and over a bed of fresh cabbage. Grilled perfectly and if was a good deal of fish, and not too fishy. Really good! My wife got sambar soup and she loved it, I had the last third of it, and it had a nice spiciness to it and she said it was very authentic to the sambar she had in India. The plain naan was all finished by her, but I had a piece and dipped it in the again, perfectly spiced mint chutney. Service was pretty good and the place started to fill up by noon. Eventhough it's a chain restaurant the food was delicious compared to some other Indian restaurants in the area. There's a good selection of South Indian dishes on the menu. We also got Lamb Vindaloo, special Goat fry, Malabar fish curry and to soak up all the gravy we also got Garlic Naan and Paratha. Everything was delicious. If you love Indian Food, run, do not walk to Godavari in Eden Prairie!! I came here for a lunch date and the food didn't disappoint in the slightest. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time and everything was divine, big portions too so I even have leftovers which I love. I ordered the Masala Chai, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Garlic Naan. I ate all of the naan, it was so good to the last bite. Most naan doesn't sit well and this was literally great to the last bite, very impressive. Because it was a date, I didn't take any photos of the food, but the Chicken Tikka Masala was beautifully presented, lots of sauce, it looked gourmet. It tasted amazing, the best Chicken Tikka Masala I've had in the twin cities! They even gave a lot of basmati rice, so I have lots of leftovers, which I'm happy about :). So glad to have discovered Godavari, a truly wonderful Indian restaurant that I'm stoked to bring friends and family to! read more

We visited the restaurant recently for a take out order. We ordered a Chicken Biriyani, Chicken Kothu Paratha and Chicken Tikka. To start with, the way the staff treated us when we went in for a pick up was great. I have visited lots of Indian restaurants and always felt that there is an opportunity for improvement on the customer service and customer experience front. Happy to see a restaurant in the Eden Prairie area who are taking customer experience seriously. Thank you! Will definitely visit this restaurant again. On the food side, except the Biriyani, the other two dishes were very spicy (green chilli spicy). We were able to taste the green chili heat in every bite. But the taste was good, so we will try to order them less spicy next time. Chicken Kothu Paratha was our most favorite, it was well made, with a good flavor and neatly packed. The Chicken Tikka was good and spicy - will order next time with less spice level. Chicken Biriyani - having had Biriyani in many Indian restaurants, I would not say they had the best, but still good. Pleasant but not helpful. They serve palak/saag and they serve aloo. The guy at the front said they wouldn't make a vegan aloo saag, and he didn't even try to ask the kitchen or a manger/owner. Inquired about Bhindi Masala and he suggested their okra dish. The spice was nice but the dish was wet and so the okra was wet. I hate wet okra. I only like it dry/fried. I also tried the Gobi 777 and Chili Gobi appetizers. Both were good, but the Gobi 777 was spicier and had a slightly better combination of flavors. Both could've been a little crispier with the batter. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again. read more

Godavari is a South Indian chain restaurant with locations around the US. It's not worth a drive from Minneapolis or St. Paul proper, but it's not bad, and it's pretty good for the suburbs. Unfortunately it doesn't label its vegan options, but many (most, even) of its vegetarian dishes should be vegan by default. We got a "silky crispy makkajonna fry" ($12) which is vegan by default and basically tempura babycorn. I had hoped it would be saltier and less bready, but it was still passable here. The samosa ($8 for three) is vegan by default and acceptable, though the interior potato filling was dry. The masala dosa ($12) (vegan by default) tasted fine but also had dry potatoes. A little bit of oil could have helped. I liked the flavor on the dal fry ($13) which I assume is vegan by default, but I wrote "no ghee/butter" just in case in the ordering notes. This tasted great. The "Godavari veg chettinadu w/avakai (mango)" ($14), is vegan by default and was a pretty good sour-ish curry with lightly-cooked vegetables. You could also have gotten this dish with "gongura paste" (gongura is a leaf from a South Indian plant known for its tartness). The Hyderabad roti ($4) was great and the the chapathi ($4) wasn't fine. Both should be vegan by default if you write "no ghee/butter" in the comments. Sadly, they didn't have the Kothu Paratha, which is a rare dish to find and one of my favorites (it's basically a chopped up roti with a savory curry sauce). That said, they kindly called me and refunded the cost prior to us picking up our meal. The service is friendly and efficient. If I happened to be in Eden Prairie again, I'd be willing to stop by Godavari again. read more

Absolutely phenomenal. Definite add to the family restaurant rotation. A really good Indian restaurant is tough to find. There are maybe four authentic places in MN that can truly take your mouth to the street of Deli and the alleyways of Jaipur. This place is one of them. We went for the Sunday buffet and the food was hot, fresh, and spiced perfectly. They have a panipuri bar on the buffet line! The staff is very nice and accommodating and checked in with us frequently. My 16 month old thoroughly enjoyed everything and the staff was very nice to her and made an effort to engage with her. I finally found it - my five star Indian restaurant in the Twin Cities. This place didn't meet my expectations - it subverted them and took them on a ride I could not have anticipated. I have long been searching for a curry house where I can get the delicious curries I know and love from when I used to live in the UK. Many places in the Twin Cities serve something that is close to the caliber of curry available there, but never quite nails it on the head. Godavari doesn't nail that UK-style curry on the head either, but it offers something different that is equally as delicious and flavorful. Godavari is a South Indian restaurant, so you should order from the South Indian menu. We ordered a chili-cheese dosa, a malabar paratha, the raju gari roasted chicken dum biryani and the chicken chettinadu from this menu. We also ordered the paneer butter masala, which is not a South Indian dish - I will touch on this momentarily. But first, for their specialties - the dosa was delicious and stuffed with a spicy cheese filling, and it came with three refreshing dips and a delicious little cup of lentil soup. The malabar paratha was falling-apart flaky and buttery and was a great alternative to the usual naan. The biryani was hands-down the best biryani I have ever had, and was so flavorful for a rice-heavy dish that is easy to make bland. The chicken chettinadu had a hot and spicy deep maroon gravy that was as becoming to the eye as it was the palate. The portions were some of the most generous I have ever had at an Indian restaurant, well worth the moderate prices. The paneer butter masala was the only aspect of our meal that fell flat - but I won't deduct any stars for this. Honestly, shame on me for ordering this dish when I knew that this restaurant specializes in South Indian cuisine. There was nothing wrong with the dish, but it did lack the decadent flavors I look for in a butter/tikka masala. It tasted like they only included it on the menu for children who may not be accustomed to bold Indian spices (in other words, it was a bit bland). Next time I go to Godavari, I will abstain from any impulses to indulge myself on this kind of fare - I'll save it for a North Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant. The restaurant was more comfortable than most Indian restaurants of a similar price point, and the waiters were much more accommodating and friendly as well. I will 100% be back to Godavari, despite how far away it is from my house. I can't wait to try some other South Indian foods in the future! read more

The paper thin dosa is longer than our table! The texture is shatteringly crispy in the thinnest places, and just a little bit more chewy in thicker places. It comes with a generous amount of sambar, potato masala, and double helpings of 3 different kinds of sauces for dipping. The dosa was perfect, with a slightly fermented flavor. The sauces were surprisingly bland. We also ordered palak paneer, which was prepared the way I dislike most - puréed to a smooth paste, not a speck of spinach to be seen. It was also surprisingly bland and watery. The basmati rice also tasted of water, no hint of nuttiness or rice-ness whatsoever. If you love paper dosa, they make the best I've had in the Twin Cities. I just did not like this food. It was too spicy and I asked for mild. I didn't like that the chicken biranyi had bones.

Context: my family's from India, and going out for South Indian (mainly dosa) was always one of our big treats growing up. It was almost impossible to find without driving 2 hours. This brings all that goodness and then some, conveniently to the southwest Metro. This chunk of Eden Prairie is turning into foodie central for the Indian diaspora. Not only do we have full-on authentic goodness from Godavari, but there's two Indian pizza places, plus India Market in the same shopping plaza (the only grocery store where I've actually seen hand-scooped kulfi ice cream). First off: if you see a dish that you're used to seeing on most Indian menus (butter chicken, tandoori stuff) -- skip it. Theirs actually does look decent, but that is not what you're here for. The "South Indian" and "specialties" section of the menu is where their real strength lies. Things you really want to try if you're new to this branch of Indian cuisine: - Vada, a sort of lentil-flour savory donut that you dip in various chutneys. - Dosa, a big ol' crispy pancake. Get it with the potato masala inside, do the dipping thing again. - Idli, a steamed rice-flour bun-bread that is mild enough that even my kids will eat it. You know what to do by now. All of the above, by the way, is proper back-home spicy, not Minnesota spicy. (As in, I was hitting the antacid cabinet that night.) But, the spice is all in the sauce and the vegetable-lentil sambar soup that comes with it, hence why these are great starting points. From there, branch out to a panoply of curries, biryanis (which I haven't tried yet but soooo on my list), uttapam (a totally different kind of veggie pancake), and the Indo-Chinese section. If you're up for something completely different, try out Kotha Paratha, a dish of chopped-up and stir fried flatbread with either egg or chicken. I've never seen it on a menu in the US before, but damn is it good. If you're getting takeout to go with beer, look no further than the "appetizers" section, either veg or not. Anything "chili" or "65" is going to have you reaching for the suds. (Which, BTW, this place is marked "no alcohol", but I've seen cold beer on their social media, so that might be off.) 100% a new go-to place for us. read more

Godavari did not disappoint. As a lover of Indian foods, I ordered the Mango Lassi, Samosas, Butter Chicken xtra spicy, Garlic Naan, and Gulab Jamun for dessert. My mouth is seriously watering as I write this review. It's fair to say that this was the best Indian food I have had...ever. My samosas came in three decent-sized cones, each filled with potatoes, peas and seasonings. The butter chicken was so flavorful that a tear fell from my eyes in pure joy. If you like spice, go for the highest level of xtra spicy as it punches the heat while still remaining flavorful. The Mango Lassi was so creamy, it was a sin. I inhaled it within one large sip (or so it seemed). The Garlic naan came with two large pieces, enough to soup up the sauce within the butter chicken. Truly a feast for a queen! I ended up sharing with a friend and he also consistently raved about how good the food was. There is no way he would have allowed me to give this place any less than five stars for both food and service. As for the service, even though we ordered takeout, service was phenomenal. Originally, the Gulab Jamun was left off my takeout order and they personally delivered it to me in addition to another dessert, payasam. The Gulab Jamun comes with 4 small balls drenched in honey and almonds slices. Perfection. While this was my first visit to Godarvi, it will not be my last. My husband and I love Indian food, but we have never had specifically South Indian food, so we were excited to try Godavari. I had some problems with the online ordering and knowing what each item was, so I kind of chose randomly, trying to pick items that we were unfamiliar with (not Samosas, not Butter Chicken . . .). I also ordered everything Medium spice level. We ended up getting Guntur Mirapakai Bhajji, Chennai Idly, Gadwal Special Dosa, Naan, and Amalapuram Avakai Chicken Dum Biryani. We shared the not too spicy items with our 3, 6, and 7 year old children. Everyone agreed that the Dosa was their favorite. The cauliflower inside was so good (even for the folks among us that don't love cauliflower)! The Biryani was good, the chicken was so tender and flavorful. The Bhajji was really interesting (for my midwestern self) - chilis stuffed with peanuts and onion, and then fried. Totally different than any Indian I've ever had before, and tasty. The Idly we probably wouldn't order again, but it was fun to try out - not bad, just not our cup o'tea. We did decide that the next time we order we would probably order mild spice level. It was hotter than we are used to - not fire breathing, but warm. There was a problem with our online order, so the restaurant called us to make it right. They were super friendly and helpful. There were about 12 of us in all and the service was flawless. Even though my friend and her family are native Indians, they even use cheat sheets to order based on previous visits and staff recommendations. I've visited several local restaurants with them, and if I'm overwhelmed, I just ask them to order on my behalf and surprise me. This has never resulted in a disappointing meal, and I almost always get something I probably wouldn't have picked myself. Because there were so many of us, there was a lot of sharing, and because the portions are huge (biggest Dosas EVER), plenty of leftovers. The staff was so attentive, and even though we split the bills five different ways, they didn't blink. I would love to tell you what we ate-a little bit of everything-but I can't find the screenshots I took of our orders. Here is what I will tell you-this menu is HUGE.
