I want to start by saying this review is **only about the beer and the service**, not the food. I'm actually a big fan of Spoke's breakfast burrito and have always enjoyed it. The other day, we were riding along the river path and decided to stop at Spoke for a beer after spending some time on the trail. We walked in, ordered a couple of beers, and the woman helping us immediately seemed annoyed that we were only ordering drinks. Her facial expressions and overall attitude made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. After taking our payment, she went to the back to grab our beers. We waited about seven minutes, which seemed like a long time considering we only ordered beer. When she finally came back, the beers were room temperature instead of cold. Normally I would have said something, but because of how short and unfriendly she had been from the start, I honestly didn't feel comfortable bringing it up. It felt like I'd just be met with more attitude. I still like Spoke, and I'll definitely be back for the breakfast burritos because they're great. I just hope this experience was a one-off, because better customer service and properly chilled beer would have made a huge difference. read more

This cafe and bike shop is such a hidden gem!!! It's in the tucked away neighborhood of Frogtown, right along the LA River. I found it on yelp a while ago and knew I wanted to check it out. It's at the end of a dead end street and I'm not going to lie, I second guessed my directions at first. But it is there! It's counter service with a massive patio. So much cool art on the walls and lots of shade. I didn't expect it to be so big from the pictures I saw online. The bike shop and rentals are in the back. I didn't rent a bike, but I did look a the cute shop and bought a cool bandana with birds on it! I ordered the breakfast tacos and a cortado and let me tell you, you they were the best breakfast tacos I've ever had. I was skeptical because I love breakfast burritos, but these were perfect. Delicious sauce, crunchy potatoes, I added kale and oyster mushrooms. The friendly cashier recommended them and told me they are only on the weekday menu though, so keep that in mind! The coffee was smooth and perfectly made with a cute little design on it. Everything came out quickly. I saw they also have a great beer list with lots of local breweries, so I'm definitely going to come back for dinner/happy hour very soon! Oh! They told me they just got their liquor license and are going to have a full drink menu soon, so I am totally looking forward to having cocktails here. I ordered the breakfast burrito with avocado. The size of the burrito was nice, I ate 3/4 of it. Eggs were solid, but the potatoes were occasionally burned? Based on where you bit into lol. Tortilla was good. Not the biggest fan of the smashed avocado in the burrito (I like whole avocado) but that's just a preference. Hot sauce was really good though! Stopped by Spoke - Bike Shop / Coffee Shop during my morning walk along the LA River and instantly loved the vibe. The space is super colorful, welcoming, and very dog-friendly--which made it an easy stop with my pup. I also thought it was really cool that there's a bike shop attached, giving it a unique, community feel. Their coffee and latte menu is pretty extensive, with lots of fun options. I ended up ordering a golden milk with an espresso shot, and it was such a good choice--warm, smooth, and just the right balance of earthy and bold. Spoke is probably my favorite place to hangout in LA. This bicycle cafe is located next to the LA River in Frogtown, where you can get refreshing drinks and bites, and ride/rent bikes. The cafe itself is outdoors, though partially covered, and feels as though you're in an eclectically decorated backyard. I've tried the Classic California Blat (with a side of fries), side of crispy potatoes, bacon breakfast burrito, and watermelon lemonade. The water lemonade is absolutely divine, not too sweet, and incredibly refreshing after a long bike ride. There are also coffee options and alcoholic beverages for purchase. Service is relatively efficient given the volume of orders they have on the weekends. Bike rentals are by the hour ($15 for the first hour, $10/hour thereafter) and located at the back of the cafe. Staff members are friendly and able to answer questions about finding the right bike fit. They do split their time with repairs, so there may be a brief wait to start the rental process; however, they are accommodating with your start time. Helmets are included in the rental fee. There are also several bike racks throughout the cafe for those who bring their bikes to Spoke. Parking immediately outside of the cafe can be challenging, but available in the nearby neighborhood with a short walk/bike ride. read more

What's the saying? I can be happy in a castle and I can be happy in a cave? Something like that. My reviews show that I sample the gamut in LA from the fanciest to the grungiest, as long as the place is clean, interesting, and has good food. I have tried to come up with a facsimile of Frogtown in other places I have been. Outside of Naples, I can't think of even one. It is truly sui generis. This is a place to dress down and low. Expect basic and rustic and, well, not for white linens and silk slippers, iykwim. However, it does do good food, a lot of it vegetarian and vegan, in a campy colorful atmosphere. You order on line (and it can be a long one), they give you a mini-beeper and you go back to pick up your items. Works for me. Oh, and let's not forget, it's a bicycle shop with an interesting store (see my photos here). If we lived in the area, we could cycle to Spoke, hitch them up and eat. Instead we drove and then walked around some, in order to try another Frogtown staple (for a future review). The music is what I would call world beat. The patio is shaded but the sun was brutal yesterday, so I battled the elements and the wildlife a bit. In fact, be ready for small members of insectivora -- hard to avoid when dining outside. Better be early if you want the full menu. It shrinks at 2 pm. We tried their unique Chagaccino latte,a mocha-style beverage made with a blend of Chaga mushroom powder, cacao, cinnamon, vanilla, mixed with espresso and a plant-based milk such as oat milk, known for its "adaptogenic benefits". It's considered a healthier alternative to a traditional mocha, offering a rich, earthy, and less bitter flavor with added antioxidants and stress-supportive properties from the chaga mushroom. It was so smooth that I think I may just have to buy some Chaga mushroom powder to add to my morning Joe. Then we had the egg bun and the egg scramble. Everything was delicious. You can feel the LA River as you approach Spoke -- in that sense it reminded me of Provincetown on Cape Cod -- something marine, funky, hip, down and dirty in the air. A nice stroll along the river caps the experience. This is a place you will either relish or resist, I am in the former category. [Parking]: Street parking only and it was NOT easy to find an available spot in this part of neighborhood (Elysian Valley aka Frogtown). I tried to look for parking at Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park (formerly Marsh Park) and the lot was packed. Ultimately I found a street parking spot on Marsh St and walked to the shop. [Atmosphere & ordering]: Nice and relaxing outdoor patio area with a metal rooftop. One unisex restroom right next to the ordering window (no key or code required). Visitors wait in line, place an order, find an available table, and pick up their food at the pick-up window. [Menu]: Some of crowd favorites include breakfast burrito, the blat (served on Bub and Grandma's sourdough and your choice of pork bacon, tempeh bacon, or shrooms), meat/veggie burgers (veggie burger even made it into the New York Times), and waffle fries / crispy potatoes. Located right off the LA river, Spoke is a cute bicycle cafe with a huge outdoor patio. There's plenty of seating to choose from and lots of shade. My boyfriend and I rented Metro bikes to bike along the LA river and stopped here for a little pick me up. I'm a fan of anything with chocolate and orange, so I had to try their Orange Chocolate Cappuccino. It was strong, delicious and creamy. My boyfriend enjoyed his Matcha Latte as well. We found the drinks to be on the pricey side. This place has such a cool vibe, and I totally recommend stopping by if you get the chance. Visiting by bike is also such a fun experience! read more

Wow, Spoke really really impressed me. I love bicycle cafe's as a general premise, but Spoke resonated with me on the setting, food selection, and service. First, it's right off the river pathway and has ample seating (outside, but covered.) Nothing beats a good meal and beverages in a sunny spot like this. Speaking of food, there were plenty of vegan options and the kale caesar I had was sooo incredible. I added the breaded vegan chicken and it was just perfect. Also, much kudos to them for having a really delicious hop water available from highland park brewing. I was originally intending on only having an iced tea but I couldn't resist grabbing the hop water too. I was not disappointed!! Finally, at least on my particular visit, the person behind the window was genuinely really nice to every person before me and to my partner and I when we ordered. They qualified some of the items, whether we wanted things vegan, as they said they too were vegan and knew we'd want to confirm. I went on a walk with my family on the trail. We stumbled upon Spoke after working up an appetite. There was a line. When we got to place an order we were met with very short service. There was no thank you or good morning, that was weird. This was 11/29/26 at around 12:30 ... a dark haired woman took our order. The drink server was blonde man who was much kinder and cordial. I thought it was just me at first but my sister experienced the same thing, as she was next in line. Sure things get busy but there is no reason why you can't say good morning or thank you. My family and I sat down at bench seats and I would say it was a casual vibe. My husband and I got the breakfast burrito and my kids had the grilled cheese and cheeseburgers that had no cheese on them. The potatoes were good. I did not like the mayonnaise based sauce on my burrito but otherwise it was ok. The vibe at the register is not my vibe. Not sure that I would go back. read more

There is a bike shop that also sells bike equipment, merch, and allows bike rentals. They also have a public wifi password posted, and I have seen people come by here with their laptops. Noise level was at a medium similar to a brunch cafe. Watermelon lemonade: The lemonade was tart and refreshing. Watermelon provided a refreshing add-on taste. Breakfast bun with tempeh (plant-based protein) w/ potatoes: Potatoes were little yellow potatoes, sliced in half and baked with a crispy outer coating. The place to be on a sunny day! My friend told me about this place a long time ago but for some reason I never went because I thought the food looks mid, but I finally went! Food: unfortunately I wasn't hungry but the salads and sandwiches I saw around me looked insane. My bike was a bit older & the handles were kind of sticky but I got over it once I felt the wind in my hair! I came back & ordered the chickpea farro bowl which was very flavorful & filling. A bier garden for people biking/walking the Los Angeles River Trail, Spoke provides a variety of food and beverages in a super chill environment. It started out as a bike shop (hence the name) in 2015, and expanded to become full service restaurant in 2017. It's best element is the outdoor dining/imbibing space...it reminded me so much of the bier gardens in Wisconsin in the summer, which I loved. My co-father-in-law and I stopped in during the middle of a long walk/hike along the trail. The other restaurant close by was opening for dinner, so that made the decision to choose Spoke easy. You get in line to order food and drink (assuming you can keep a tab, but for us, just paid as we went along). Since all we ordered was a pitcher, we got it right away and we carried it back to a back shaded table, where we spent the next hour enjoying the weather. The draft beer list was categorized by Crisp and Light, Hoppy, Sour/Fruity, and Stout/Amber/Dark. They also had ciders, kombuchas, and seltzers as well. We got a pitcher of Pure Project Brewing 'Tropical Mist', a citrus blond ale ($34)..a pitcher being four 16oz glasses ($9), so a slight savings. I really loved this crisp beer for the occasion...the best word for it is refreshing and would have been an easy choice for another if we had more time. But alas, it was time to move on. read more

This was my second time at Spoke and was the second stop of the day. I went all in ordering another hot matcha latte and the breakfast bun. Both were really good and hit the spot after riding. The seating area is spacious with plenty of shaded spots, though it got busy fast. My only downside was that the employees were definitely not the friendliest of the day and off-putting. I said good morning and got a half smile, probably accompanied by an eye roll. Did not love that at all. I guess even so this is still a great location, great food, and I'll likely keep coming back. read more

From the ambience to the row of marathon runners on the treadmill. The place was beaming with personality. Thankfully the food backed it up as well. There's ample outdoor seating, and you order at the front and get notified via a buzzer when your food is ready for pickup. If you visit during peak hours, there can be a long line though I find it usually moves quickly. I frequently oder their Classic California BLAT (which comes with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado) with a side of waffle fries. It's a solid sandwich and an overall satisfying meal. While I find it moderately pricey, I still think of Spoke as a recommended restaurant option if you're in the area. read more

Horrible experience due to the actions of a staff member that I unfortunately have to assume was acting on behalf of the business. We came here to order lunch & drinks for a small, late afternoon birthday celebration (6 people at one table), and brought a gluten free birthday cake from JWIK down the street. As half our party was placing food & drink orders, this staff member came up to the others at our table and asked them to remove the outside food from the premises. After clarifying that it was a birthday cake and that we were ordering food, this person let us know that the policy applies to "especially cake," and doubled down by calling us "unbelievably rude" for bringing it. A couple things: 1. The policy. Yes, you're a small business and your patio is for your customers. But also, our party of six just spent $300 on burgers/apps and a first round of drinks (would have spent more were it not for this situation). Consider a cake cutting fee? 2. "Especially cake," lol dude. Since this restaurant doesn't serve gluten-free birthday cake (thus why we brought one from down the street), I guess this could be pursuant to a general anti-cake sentiment at Spoke. Who knew? 3. Heads up, y'all have two 8.5x11 pieces of paper near your entrances asking for no outside food facing the interior of the business. If this was all according to plan, you have a poorly communicated policy. For something this draconian, maybe consider some extra artwork to drive the point home. 4. The attitude. Jumping so quickly to calling a woman who's clearly there to celebrate her birthday "incredibly rude," demanding that a packaged food product be removed from the premises, etc. are just completely unnecessary. A kind request, "sorry, but it's our policy," and some basic accommodations for your guest are no-brainer hospitality. Food was delicious. We love Frogtown and have loved making Spoke one of the drop-ins for an afternoon by the river, but I guess today was the last one of those. read more

My partner and I were looking to get a quick bite and try some place new before our movie matinee. We'd both heard of Spoke and he'd seen it on his bike rides so when it came up as a suggestion, we decided to finally give it a try. We arrived on a Saturday around 10ish. As expected, the streets near Spoke are tight on parking. There was one spot in particular we didn't take but questioned if it would be ok. There is a chain link, rolling fence gate right next to Spoke's entrance that is covered in vines that looks like it can't move (without doing major damage to the plants); that fence sits in front of a driveway that I couldn't imagine gets used often but to be safe, we didn't park there. Instead we circled the blocks for a bit until we found a spot where we sure it would not be illegal to park. It was a pain and I suggest that if you're able to, you get to Spoke without your car. I can only imagine the parking gets worse later in the day than better. Anyway, once parked, we walked in and to the left of the entrance is a window where you can place your order. The menu is scattered around the window and on the counter but it's probably easier to browse it from your smart phone. We ordered a breakfast sandwich, a side of fries, a cold brew and a matcha chai. We self-seated ourselves at an open table nearby and proceeded to wait for our buzzer to buzz (you pick up your food at a window adjacent to where you ordered). The seating is open and varied with long benches to small 2 tops a single chairs. There are doors where you can easily access the bike path as well as some seating options along the bike path itself. In the back of Spoke is a bike rental shop that also has helmets and bike-care items, all available to rent. It's such a fun place that we could totally imagine bikers stopping into to get air and/or food or to simply take a breather. When our food came, it was good. The eggs in the sandwich were fluffy and runny (my favorite kind) and the fries were crispy and seasoned. The cold brew and tea were standard fare but not bad. All in all, it was a cute experience and it made me envious of those who can casually bike to and from Spoke as part of their daily routines. I do pottery out of Claytivity when I'm in Los Angeles (it's my happy place and I Frogtown) and I've only ever gone to Spoke for coffee before during the day. So when the Frogtown Art Crawl was on and two friends came in from the Valley we decided to make the rounds but since we were starving we stopped at Spoke for a bite to eat. Ordering from a window isn't my dream way of eating out but I knew what we were getting into so went with it. The place was packed due to the art crawl and we ended up at the back which ended up being the best place to be. Live art, a dj and a live trombone player!! It was super loud, we had a beer while we were waiting (way too long) for our food but it was such a happy atmosphere and we had a lot of catching up to do - and we both worked in the music biz and we decided to felt like being at a party at sxsw in Austin!! I now it can't be like that every night but it was such a great experience I had to share. Oh and the food!! I normally follow a keto diet but said screw that tonight and we decided to split a hamburger, a sandwich and a side of fries AND onion rings. Celebrate!! Such an amazing meal. We all dug in and I loved every bite. Not having had bread for a while both the burger bun and sandwich bread were the best things I had tasted, EVER! Could have been cranky because it took so long but we decided to go with it and just enjoy the experience. I've tried this place three times and I've been disappointed three times. It's my fault for expecting something different. I figured it was just a couple bad days and no way they could be bad three times in a row. I was wrong. They were. First time: got the order wrong twice. Had to remind them of what I ordered and they had to remake everything. No apology. Second time: there was literally one other person there and all the tables were open. They were very rude to me because I was putting my stuff down before ordering and I had a cup of La Colombe coffee. Told them I was just setting my stuff down then I was going to order (which I did). Rudely, they told me that I needed to order first. Third time: Food hadn't come out for 40 minutes. Went to ask about it. Told they were behind. No apology. Another ten minutes and I ask again. They said that their computer didn't register and asked what I ordered. They had to make it still. Finally, food came out and it was wrong. Toast was just bread. Absolutely no toast to it at all. I want this place to be good because it's a cool spot, but it's just a bad experience with bad service and rude staff. read more

The birding on the river is gorgeous and the bike shop in the cafe is so cute and helpful to rent or repair bikes The orange chocolate cappuccino (hot) is the best coffee I've ever had.
