A small, old-fashioned hardware store in downtown Ada. I have shopped there several times, but on a few occasions I had to leave empty-handed as they simply did not have the items I needed. It's not surprising that they don't have everything, given their small size, however. What I have noticed is that the prices for several of their products are quite a bit higher than what you'd find at a Meijer, Menards or Lowe's - not just more, but sometimes more than double. I will say that the service here tends to be helpful and friendly. If you need help, they will be happy to help and if you just want to look around, they don't bug you. If I'm shopping for an everyday hardware item, I will typically stop into Godwin's first, but I now check the going price for the item and if it's significantly more expensive here, I just go somewhere else. Otherwise, I do try to support local business and get the better service they provide. read more

Ordinarily I love the store. I buy many things there, from a random bolt to snowblowers and chainsaws. I went to the store today to buy some items and standing by the back door were two employees maybe three, nobody wearing a mask. Put your mask on. It is not that difficult. I want to spend money there and now I will not return there for probably six more months. I will order my stuff online. Why? Just put on a simple stinking mask. read more

I have used Godwin's for many things, parts, service of equipment and repairs. We recently hired them to re-connect our plumbing and appliances. It took far longer time-wise than what was expected and we had some major issues that happened that night over the work that was done. Godwin sent out another agent that spent time to fix the problems and everything is fine now. They also gave us a reasonable credit without any argument which was very much appreciated. Took my mower in twice for the same problem. They said they fixed it the first time and stuck me with a $800 bill. I paid assuming they wouldn't lie. Got the mower home and still had same issue. When I tried to bring it back within the warranty period for the work they said they were too busy and I couldn't bring it in for another month. Go figures, they don't have availability until the warrantied work expires. Got the mower back in and they stuck me with a $300 bill and the mower has the same problem. Had to get a lawyer to take them to small claims court. Also, notified BBB. Save your time and money, don't use Godwin. Sad we try and support our communities and they take advantage of you. read more

There used to be town or neighborhood hardware stores like this all over the Midwest. Although much smaller than the DIY megastores, the advantage these stores had were truly helpful and knowledgeable staff (though maybe that was just the owner all by himself). This quaint throwback still seems to be thriving, midst an implausible number of pottery and similar artsy-fartsy shops in the tiny downtown of tiny Ada. Unlike the helpful hardware stores in the mid 20th century of the South Side of Chicago where I grew up, this small town hardware store is remarkably clean, and by little hardware store standards, relatively roomy. There were three very helpful workers here, they quickly made copies of housekeys for us. They have an excellent selection of glue, flashlights, burglary tools and...I've said too much already. read more

I had a small problem with a wheel for my lawn tractor that was messing with my Saturday schedule. I loaded it into the trailer and headed to Godwin. They did an awesome job of stopping what they were doing and fixing it for me in the spot. It turned out to be a small thing, but I would not have been fixed without them. Let me first say that I almost NEVER write bad reviews about businesses. I usually visit the Ace Hardware store on 28th St. but they didn't have the screw I was looking for so I decided to head down to Ada and check out Godwin to see if they'd have the correct one. I walked in and asked for help finding the screw I needed (a 4x5mm with phillips head). The guy that was helping me looked as though I had just talked to him in a foreign language and insisted that I must be confused as to what I wanted. I could tell he knew nothing about hardware and just pointed me to the metric section. At least he knew that millimeters were metric. He walked away and it was up to me to locate the screw by myself. I looked for another couple minutes and was fed up wandering the hardware department without any guidance so I decided to leave. I said, "Thanks for the help and have a nice day" on my way out as the worker just stood and stared at me as I walked out the door. He didn't say a word. I haven't ever been treated so poorly in any store - especially while I was being so pleasant about the situation. Never going back again. I'm not too happy with these guys. Last fall I brought my friend's John Deere 445 tractor in for fall maintenance, and to fix anything else that needed fixing before we sold it. After paying a small fortune, I sold it to what I thought were happy people. I have just found out that the tractor barely runs, the new owner has so far put $1100 into it to fix things that were supposed to be fixed. He found the wrong screw put in the oil pan (which was leaking oil like crazy). It barely starts and when it does, it doesn't run for too long after. The new owner (who works on John Deere Tractors) said it hadn't been greased in years. I'm just beside myself for thinking you guys were taking good care my buddy's equipment. For that reason, I'm only giving you 1 star. Sorry guys... but you lost my business as well as Mr. Gilmore's business. read more

On 10-12-2017 I went to Godwin Ada Hardware and paid $8.54 a foot for 2" X 10' black pipe and bought the 2 they had. I needed 1 additional and went to Menards the next day. $3.40 a foot? Not even on sale? Wow! Love the service the Godwin Ada Hardware provides. I usually go to Godwin Ada Hardware first.....I mean "used to". My mistake for not simply checking the price first, but when I went back the next day to confirm the price, he said, "no that's the price" and asked the person behind me if he could help him. no reviews for godwin? come on, gr, this is a gem of a hardware store! right in "downtown" ada, across from the speedway with the excellent gas station (ie high octane) coffee, next to ada bike. all in all, a really great place. the treatment you receive is a long lost (and greatly missed) relic of a day when the hardware store didn't merely sell you wares, but helped you with projects, gave liberal helpings of advice, and treated you like a friend (or at least a human being- try getting that at megabox store). from a three pack of baby stick on thermometers for a few bucks to awesome stihl kombisystems, and everything in between, godwin is a great little shop. read more

Best old fashioned hardware store. It's stuffed full of products and staff know exactly where everything is. So helpful - they ask questions and give advice to make sure you buy the right thing the first time. I don't care about a higher price - you should expect to pay for the convenience of not having to drive to a box store. And they really know their stuff. read more

As a long-term Ada resident and believer of shopping local, I went out of my way to use Godwin to repair my lawnmower and snowblower. I called ahead of time to verify how long it would take for the work (as the grass was growing!), they indicated 4 days. Each week that passed I grew more concerned. I didn't hear from them, so I called. Each time I called, they indicated it would be done within a few days. I requested that before they worked on my equipment, that they call with a quote - that never happened. After a month without a mower and no outgoing calls from them to me, I finally made an in-person visit. When I got there, repairs had been done, but at an incredible rate. What was originally ball-parked to be a $35 repair, my bill came to over $200. What a surprise, given that they agreed to call with a price before doing any work. As I read the other reviews that this is a 'local' place, I wonder how they can treat customers this way and remain in business. Yes, the the employees are nice, but to be honest, I'm not a customer because they are nice - I am there because they fulfill the commitments they make. Honest prices and realistic lead times are critical to my loyalty as a customer, to which they fall far short of. My expectations of a local business like Godwin should at least be equal to that of a big box store if not exceed. In this case, they fall far short of minimum expectations. read more

I brought my mower in for service and after six weeks i picked the mower up only to find the problem that i brought the mower in for was not fixed. I will have ro find another shop to fix my mower. read more

I had a terrible experience with their service department. The employee was rude and short with me when he checked in my mower to be fixed. I was close to taking it elsewhere, but I gave this guy the benefit of the doubt, assuming maybe he was having a bad day. But he went on to service my mower without calling with an estimate first (which is standard practice), and tried to charge me for way more than was originally requested. We negotiated the final price, and I was given my mower without a single thank you or have a nice day. Just handed the bill. This was really disappointing. I support local businesses first, but this is not how you treat customers. read more

First of all, I'd like to say that Godwin Hardware in Ada has always been very helpful to me. Last weekend, I realized that I needed to make a last minute adjustment to a marching drum for a wedding I was performing in. The part I needed to stabilize the drum on my leg is no longer made. After a disastrous rehearsal, I knew I needed this part. I flew into Godwin Ada less than 4 hours before the wedding in a panic and they helped me out. (UNDERSTATEMENT.) I showed a picture of the drum part and described how it was to be used. After thinking a moment, the gentleman (that is always helpful) starting pulling pieces, describing options, and worked out a game plan for us. He even cut the metal for me as I did not own the tool to cut it. All of this for $12.88 and they wouldn't accept a higher payment despite my request. Godwin saved the day and my friend's wedding march. Really. Not exaggerating. It would have been a train wreck without that part. THANK YOU!!! read more

Total LIARS! They came out to our house while I was gone to pick up our tractor for service. I came home to find our fence post laying on the ground totally broken but It was laying in a nice way on the ground. Like someone placed it there. When Ada called with a gigantic quote on how much our tractor needed in work (now I question this as I know they are filthy liars) I told them my fence got damaged and he puts me on hold comes back and said his guy came out and saw the fence was already broken so He parked on the road! PLEASE! My fence was perfectly fine when I left and just a few min later ruined and Ada hardware was the ONLY ones out there with a large trailer to pick up my tractor. NO MORALS OR ETHICS coming from the guys down here. No doubt in my mind whatsoever that they wrecked my fence and won't admit it. It's probably only a 50.00 repair to fix the fence but lying about it!?!? We will absolutely never do business here again. Lowell has a tractor supply not too far away. Stay away from these guys. They are not trustworthy or honest and frankly I don't even want my tractor to be fixed by them now but we have no trailer to pick it up and my husband although really angry with them said its already down there but we are never bringing it there again. I took some wheelbarrow tires in to be fixed. They tested them and found that they only needed air. They had taken the inner tubes out and tested for leaks. There was no charge. No charge! Now that is service. I highly recommend this store for any hardware needs. read more
