Been here a few times while waiting for my younger brother to finish up his music lessons at the Easy Music Center next door and I never get tired of their rolls! I've only been here on Saturday mornings and afternoons, and the wait time varies between 10 - 30 minutes. It doesn't seem like there's an online reservation system and you'll be seated on a first come, first served basis based on when you jot down your name on the clipboard a little bit past the entrance. Gohan is on the smaller side and I'd recommend only coming here with a small group of people (no more than four). It may be difficult to eat here if you have a wheelchair or a stroller because of the lack of space. The space is really clean and they offer disposable wipes on the table for you to wipe your hands with. Even though I don't personally eat any seafood, they have a few non-seafood options that I absolutely love. My favorite is the pork kakuni hand roll ($4.95/roll as of 6/2026)! The meat itself is very tender and coated in a savory sauce. Be warned that it can get *very* messy to eat haha. I love that they have a set menu as well as daily specials! They're pretty active on Instagram (@gohan.hawaii) and you can look at the daily specials on their story before heading over. I really like looking out for any new drinks and desserts, but maybe that's because I have a bit of a sweet tooth. From their set menu though, I highly recommend the Vietnamese Coffee drink! Doesn't have a strong coffee taste and has just the right amount of sweetness to it. Parking wise, you'll either need to find street parking or park in the parking structure attached to the building. You can validate your parking ticket at Gohan once you pay for your food. From what I saw, there was one table for 2, one table for 6, and two tables for 4, so it feels more like a cozy neighborhood spot rather than a large dine-in restaurant. I can't give a full review since I didn't dine in, but I ordered the chicken karaage, kakuni, and the Ume Shirasu Musubi. The musubi itself was good quality -- they use high-quality rice, which definitely makes a difference. I also liked that the nori was given separately so it stayed crisp instead of getting soggy. The only reason I took off a star was because I expected the musubi to be freshly made when ordering. Instead, they handed me one that was already sitting on the shelf for customers to grab, so the rice was cold. I think if someone orders directly, it should be made fresh with warm rice. I went during their breakfast hours because I was waiting for an appointment. I got the musubi platter - tuna mayo and salmon. It also comes with miso soup and tsukemono. Friendly and fun! It's taken me a long time to eat here....their hours don't line up with my schedule, so it's been a little tricky to eat here. But worth the wait! This place gets busy! I came here to have lunch with my boyfriend and had to wait a bit to get seated. They have a few tables and bar seating. We ordered the pork Kakuni, grilled unagi and one of their specials for the day which was a steak hand roll. All of them were so yummy! Gohan provides high quality onigiri in a world of musubi - the rice grain AND the seaweed are top notch and elevate the mouth feel of each bite. I do recommend dining there rather than takeout, as they do offer validated parking for the building they're in, but their takeout option isn't bad either as they wrap the seaweed separately to maintain its crispiness. Second visit to Gohan on South King St., where the Easy Music Center is located. They specialize in rice dishes - using Tsuyahime rice from Yamagata - musubi, temaki sushi, and bentos. Excellent cheap eat! Gohan has lots of onigiri and hand roll options that are mostly $3-4, both available for grab-and-go takeout or made to order for dine in. I had 3, which was the perfect amount of food. They use high quality rice, nori, and salt which sets the onigiri apart, especially at this affordable price. You have to pay at the register up front even for dine-in, but the service was overall very good and our food came quickly. High quality ingredients make Gohan's Musubis exceptional. I stopped by after an appointment in the same building and grabbed some Musubis to go. It's located in the interstate building along King St on the left side where Easy Music Center is on the ground level. Inside makes you feel transported to a quaint Japanese eatery with table and bar seating. By the door are premade Musubis lining the wall. I tried the salmon, mentaiko, and pork Kakuni. My favorite, the pork was a nice sized piece with a bit of tender fat and drizzled with mayo and unagi sauce. The addition of lettuce gave it a contrasting crunchy texture. They separate the nori and it is so crisp and has a delicious flavor of its own. Overall the Musubis are a bit more expensive than other spots, pork is $4 something. Finally had a chance to try Gohan - you feel transported back to Japan other than the prices! We were looking for a quick lunch and decided to try Gohan one day. There is parking in the building and they validate - although I believe it's only 30 minutes so you'll have to pay $2 or more depending how long you stay. The menu is small - of course mostly musubis but they have a variety of topping options. I opted for a classic salmon onigiri, mentaiko cream cheese yaki onigiri and homemade tonjiru. If you are dining in, they do take your order and bring your items to your table but you can also do takeout from their corner near the door with pre-made musubis. The classic onigiri was good - an average musubi. I don't think you can go wrong. I would say it's a bit small for the price (about $3) but it's a classic onigiri. The standouts for me were the tonjiru and the yaki onigiri. I love tonjiru and could tell this one was very well made. It came packed with veggies and meat which I appreciate. And the mentaiko cream cheese yaki onigiri blew me away. I would come back just for this! The flavor combo was so good and textures of the grilled onigiri were so delicious. We ordered a bunch of musubi, soup, and coffee: Shiso hikiki musubi (4/5) perfect seasoning and a good option if you want something simple Hamachi jalapeno (3/5) it was good according to Dad but not amazing Unagi musubi (4/5) this was tasty according to my Dad. He inhaled this musubi Yaki musubi (grilled) (4/5) it was perfectly charred and tasty. I liked how crispy it came out and made my Dad nostalgic for small kid time. Pork tonjiru soup (3/5) according to my Dad it was good and full of veggies. It was simple yet perfect to wash down all the yummy rice Iced Vietnamese coffee (3/5) it was good but wasn't exactly a traditional Vietnamese coffee. I was so happy to find ochazuke for breakfast! We were able to find ochazuke in Tokyo in the morning hours but not in Northern California. My husband and I ordered the salmon Ikura (extra cost) and crispy rice (extra cost). It was delicious delicious and I want to come back again! As someone trying to minimize her carb intake, you would think I would stay clear of a restaurant called "Rice". No need to as everything thoughtfully created at Gohan! Love that their premium miso soup tonjiru is chock full of goodness. Always order to start. Also enjoy trying their other appetizers, if you can get them, as they do run out. Of course the star of the show are their grilled musubis and handrolls. While I've been told the yaki musubis are delicious (am sure they are as I grew up on them thus creating this still chubby kid; hahah), I can't get enough of the perfectly balanced, full of fresh protein goodness handrolls. Have tried the unagi roll and the spicy hamachi and jalapeño roll and would definitely do repeat on both. We came during the week around 12:30 and we were lucky enough to grab the last 2 seats at the bar. We noticed that there were a selection of to-go musubi in the front. Noticed there were empty slots for the more popular ones. As this was our first time here, the staff and the owner were kind enough to walk us through the menu and ordering. On recommendation, we ordered the mentai cheese, grilled unagi, Ume hijiki, original grilled shoyu. They had grilled hamachi Kama as special so we got that too. It was so tender and rich tasting-oh my! The rice was phenomenal- and since we were seated at the bar, we could see the staff making the musubi. Pretty amazing to watch how fast and precise. Every bite we had was so good, rice flavorful. I really liked the grilled musubi with the crunchy texture. Prices ran about $3.50 to $4.75, more for the specials and fancier ones. The service was quick though they had a couple misses - they forgot our drinks order. They quickly made them after we reminded them. But I think they forgot our order for the candied sweet potato. While the ingredients are clearly high quality, I was a bit disappointed by the very limited number of raw options (only about 2-3). The raw items we did try, like the hamachi jalapeno and salmon okazue, were absolutely delicious. However, the cooked items, such as the tonkatsu and saba, were forgettable. The pork miso soup was unique and hearty, packed with radish and meat. It was tasty, but I wished there was more actual soup and less filling. I went on a Saturday morning for breakfast. I parked on the street and paid for the hour parking, but they offer parking validation if you park in the Interstate Building or you can pay to park in the lot right after that Building. I arrived right when they opened and was able to get a table. There are 3 tables that can fit a party of four and then one table for a party of 2. The counter fits about 8 people. If you go when they open, you'll easily get a table but they fill up quickly so by 845, all the seats were full. We ordered an array of dishes, but got the following: - Musubi plate that came with two types of onigiri (Tuna Mayo, Salmon, Salted Squid), side dishes (Okra, eggplant, Ume) and miso soup (pork soup is additional charge) - Unagi Chazuke - Tonkatsu & Spicy Chicken Karaage Handroll - Mentaiko Cream Cheese Grilled Roll - Hamachi Jalapeño & Spicy Tuna Roll Everything was pretty good, but what stood out was the Chazuke and the Sushi Rolls. The sushi rolls were specials of the day, but I hope they have it more often or put it on the regular menu. The onigiris tasted the same as something you'd get from Musubi Iyasume, but at least they were bigger. I definitely got full from the musubi plate and it was cheap for less than $12. I think that the Breakfast specials are definitely worth the price and worth coming back for, but if you order a-la-carte then be prepared to spend a pretty penny. For the service, it needs some work. They had a full staff working and when I arrived the restaurant still wasn't full, but no one welcomed me when I got in and all the workers just looked at me without saying anything. After standing in front of the register for 5 or so minutes, they finally came to me and I told them I wanted to dine in. It was fast to get the table, but took a bit for them to take our order. It didn't take long to get the food, but they got an item wrong and instead of taking it back they fixed it at the table. Also, they barely checked on us and never refilled our water. This was an amazing find just prior to heading to the airport for the Big Island. Everything was fresh and expertly prepared. We ordered more after our initial order to sample the menu. The onigiri was especially a treat. I forgot to take a photo because I enjoyed it so much. The quality of the rice and nori are second to none (at least outside of Japan). Cozy indoors. Can't go wrong with this option! Now service has been better than the very first time. The cold brew was a shocker. This is one of the better cold brews we've had. Gohan was a terrific find that truly elevates musubi to a new level. If you have time, dine in and treat yourself to a Japanese breakfast experience. There are a few set meals to choose from, all at very reasonable prices. I had the Unagi Chazuke, and I still think about it to this day. I cannot wait to go back. It is a small spot with just a handful of tables, offering a cute ambiance and excellent service. Located in the lobby of the First Interstate Building, you can park in the garage and they will validate. Gohan may be small in size, but the flavors, quality, and comfort leave a big impression. I have been wanting to go here since they opened! Finally made it out one day and everything was so good. The shop is located right next to the main building entrance of the interstate building, where Easy Music Center & Karai Crab are on King St. I ordered a tonjiru and 4 musubi/rolls total, and I probably could have had one more, but it was enough. There are a surprising amount of tables inside and about 6 or so counter seats. The space is very clean and the staff is friendly. Food came out pretty fast, so great for a quick lunch break. I will be back one day! They also have takeout at the front and I understand they will give you packaged nori so it doesn't get soggy. Street parking is best, but sounds like they will validate for 30 min read more
