This was my first time trying this kind of food and i'm glad i tried it. The food was good. Here is the good and bad: This restaurant is in a bad part of town, and not pretty from the entrance. the inside isn't much better. when we entered there was no one there. The TV was on loud with a soccer game on. A man came out and sat us. we the meat sambusas. They were very good. The gentleman that served us was very nice. They sell water, you cannot get a glass.. only bottles. The prices of the food seemed reasonable. I got the Awaze Tibs(seasoned beef dish). this was very good. It came with the authentic Injera. (gluten free fermented bread) it has a spongy texture, a very sour dough like flavor. My daughter got the Alicia Wot (seasoned lamb dish). It was also very good. My problem lies with the service mostly. All the men that worked there, sat in the room with the TV, area watching the soccer game including our server. We sat there forever to get the door and then I had to go wake him for our bill. He didn't offer an itemized bill, just gave me the amount. I had to ask for an itemized bill. I'm not a fan of a restaurant that doesn't want to do their job. I will return and try more of the food, but i'm gonna have to figure out how to deal with the service. read more

Was eager to try this place since last time I tried to order delivery DoorDash screwed it up and I never got my food. However this is not the restaurant's fault that falls absolutely on DoorDash and their poor service. Having said that this is a family run restaurant. When you walk in may not be aesthetically pleasing to the eye on the outside but what you're about to experience inside is absolutely so much more. I ordered the mushroom wat which was very reasonably priced at nine dollars and an iced tea. The owner of the restaurant is very friendly very warm when I also taking my order promptly. The dining area itself is smaller, but very quaint and its ability to maintain its coziness. The decor of the restaurant is pretty modest in a culturally based atmosphere which improves the atmosphere of this wonderful experience. My food was very promptly made and arrived on the table quickly and experience was about to get all that much better. The mushroom wat was absolutely amazing and absolutely what I have been craving for the 20 years. I've been waiting for in my return cravings for Ethiopian food. The bread they used for dipping with absolutely perfect as it is always one of my favorites to indulge when eating this food. In the end this place left me sitting at the table absolutely stuffed, which is fantastic especially with the price what I paid for it all. Amazing food and the best people! I've come here every week for the past 6 weeks while overcoming a medical issue with my stomach. My friend recommended Gojo after I asked her for help and she said this food helps her diabetic mom too. My family comes once a week and enjoys their cultural decorations, food, and company. The norm is when something is on your table when you walk in and sit down you are not charged. When my group sat down each person had a bottle of water at their place. Before we walked out, each of us had to pay for the bottle of water that was at each person's place. There was no notice. I asked for a check while leaving. I got one but it was not itemized. The water cost about $3.00 The waiter noticed he gave the wrong dish to someone. After the patron told the waiter he had eaten from it, the waiter wanted to exchange dishes. Objections were voiced. The waiter kept saying it was OK. The other parties said it was not. Eventually the waiter acquiesced. These were not expensive dishes. Their primary ingredient is dried legumes, not lobster. There was a about a cup of the legumes in each one. There was no excuse for this. Go-Jo is place where you are deceived about what is included is not one to be trusted. Where one-half eaten bowl of split peas is imprudently exchanged for another's. It poses a danger to our health. read more

I brought my friend here when Abyssinia (my regular spot) was not open one day. The first thing my friend said "is the other place as dirty as this one?" I was frustrated that the lady and it seemed like she would have been happy with zero customers instead of us two. The food was way too salty. Again, I have eaten at all the Ethiopian places in the valley even though it was my first time in Gojo. I have been in their parking lot a few times but they'd been closed. I will not return. Great spot with great food! I'm a big fan of Ethiopian cuisine and this one comes with high quality food and friendly staff. Although I am a meat eater, I personally prefer the vegetarian dishes at Ethiopian restaurants and this one was no different with the veggie combo. It's a fun and unique experience if you haven't already had Ethiopian as you use the injera "bread" (it's kind of like a thick crepe) instead of silverware to pick up the food and eat it. Any bad review about this place is pure delusion. The food here is amazing and seasoned to perfection, every time I come here the flavor is consistent and the previous time. FINALLY. I can get some yummy Ethiopian food WITH an Ethiopian BEER!!!! Gojo has ASMARA beer and it is delightfully light and fits perfectly into my hand and mouth () while I await the platter of DELICIOUS vegetarian delights. I am very picky when it comes to my Ethio flavors and this hits the spot. misr wot, kik alicia and gomen all on the money. Injera tasty and plenty. This is now in the running for my favorite Ethio in PHX. the other being Authentic EthioAfrican (they still don't have Ethio beers YET). It's quiet and friendly and welcoming here, and our larger party was easily seated. The menu has more combos than entrees. The food comes out relatively quickly and is tasty. A lot of this is exactly what I expect in an Ethiopian restaurant. It's very difficult, and perhaps not possible, to get everything in larger platters for groups. We asked but were encouraged to make separate orders. But the good news is that everything came out at once. They do not have honey wine on the menu, but it is available if you ask. Each serving is individual and is the equivalent of about 2 glasses. I read some older reviews which complained about the water. For our dinner, everyone had a bottle of water at the table with our place settings. What we did not know until we checked out was that we would also be charged for these, without being told in advance. It wasn't an exorbitant fee, but if the alternative was bad tap water, and with the food so good, we didn't mind. We also asked for separate checks, to which they said okay. But instead of getting separate bills, we had to go to the register at the bar individually and confirm what we ordered. We are foodies, just full disclosure here. We have traveled full-time in our RV from city to city around the country for the past 7 years. We rarely eat at a chain and we nearly always use Yelp (and when pushed for ideas will use Google Maps). Our searches are for "uncommon to us" or local foods or foods we are hungry for or miss. Gojo's was found in a search for the exotic and we were willing to drive the 1 hour for a new experience. We have had African food but never specifically Ethiopian. The outside of the building was an unassuming strip center. When we passed thru the door however we felt as if we were on the African continent. Bright colors and interesting tables with straw cone shaped table covers. It appeared to be a method of keeping food warm or keeping away flies if in Africa (there were no flies in this restaurant). There is a full bar, a dance floor and small band stand. Near the bar is a sitting area with carved stools and more of those cone table things. This appeared to be a "conversation pit" of sorts. I understood more about this after we were served. The waiter took our drink order and gave us menus. When he returned, we placed an order for a Vegg Combo and a Meat Combo. There were 4 in our party. 2 of us ordered cokes and they were served in the can (no glass or ice). It seemed odd but we went with it. 1 ordered hot tea and the other ordered Ethiopian Coffee. The comments on tea and coffee were positive. The meal was served on what seemed to be a metal pizza pan about 15 inches in diameter. The pan was covered with a spongy looking bread-ish thing and the veggies were grouped in little piles around the pan and in the center. It was very attractive. The meat was basically the same. The meat was chicken, beef and lamb. The lamb was mild and delicious in a brown gravy, the beef was much more spicy and peppery in a red sauce and the chicken was the spiciest of all. The veggies were two types of lentils, carrots and green beans, yucca, cabbage, creamed corn, and collards. Most seemed the be fermented or pickled. All were very tasty and spiced nicely. We asked the waiter about the spongy stuff that was rolled in baskets set on our table. At first they looked like wash clothes. That made sense as we knew Ethiopian food is commonly eaten with your hands. It was extremely soft and pliable but not doughy; the taste was very neutral and is used to scoop up and eat the food. The texture may be a problem for some but I found it a fun way to eat. The consensus of the 4 of us was the food was "good to delicious" while one found the spicy food too hot. She usually doesn't like peppery food so that was no surprise (big sissy). 2 of us would go back but the two mid westerners said probably not. They did enjoy the experience however. Now back to the conversation pit tables. The tables were the size of the pizza pan, duh, as were the cones. Ingenious! So apps are likely served like our meals and placed on these cool tables. Even though they raised their prices, and reduced the portions you still get value for your money. Our sambusas were overdone but honestly with some direction it's an easy fix. The amount you pay and the flavor you get makes it worth it. This place isn't open until 10pm though, It's 9. They have traditional or regular seating. Came here years ago then again tonight for the first time in a long time. I got Meat combo and the Gojo combo. Fire... we started with the Gojo which is a combination of the meet and veggie combos. It was so good we ordered the meats combo alone and a side of the greens. Their greens are crisp and deliciously full of flavor. It was all just so good I can't say enough about the food. The neighborhood is a shady one, so just be careful because you're in the hood! We got a samosa order and the lentil soup for appetizers, which were great. For entrees, my husband got the gojo combination and I got the meat and veggie combination. You completely eat with your hands so prepare for no silverware! You basically use the spongy bread to wrap it all up into a bite. The combos are an adventure because you get to try a bunch of things on a platter. The taste was good, it was fun to have. We walked into a completely empty restaurant on a Friday evening with one server who seemed disinterested when we arrived. We asked to sit at the bar that was empty and he said no. Tables were filthy. No music so it was a quiet and an uncomfortable ambiance. We tried the meat sambusa which was okay, seemed overcooked. No silverware or water provided.
