When a writer's description of gushing and overt hospitality is "This feels like someone's home!" I wince. And I groan. Sure, maybe it's like the *first time* you go to someone's house, and they're trying to impress you. But Addis Ababa brings the sensation of trips to a best friend's house, where all pretense of a pristine and orderly family is dropped, and I am but one of many people, objects, and tasks that command attention. It is incredibly casual. A few minutes after you arrive, someone will ask how you are doing, and more importantly if you have any familiarity with this cuisine. You probably don't, but if you order what I ordered you'll be excited to try more. The Sambusas, or a stuffed and fried pastry served with a chutney of sorts, absolutely cannot be skipped. Crispy on the outside with soft layers on the inside, I can best describe their texture and flavor as a cross between India's samosa and Arizona's chimichunga. You like both of those things, right? The lentil variety are a solid starter that will tempt you to order a dozen as a full meal. And as amazing as those are, the beef filling is even better! I had the Shekla Tips for my entree. It was served in a hollowed out bowl (I do not know the formal name for this) with coals underneath the surface, keeping the beef simmering in onions, peppers, and fat from start to finish. On the side was a bowl of dry spices, and plentiful injera, a flat bread with the texture of sponge cake and the taste of a sharp sourdough that acts as a staple of this cuisine. You scoop up your food with this bread. You are not even given or offered utensils. You will enjoy every last bite. You will feel a bit messy, with the warmth of peppers radiating through your hands and face. I'd like to believe the sense of messiness only enhances one's immersion in a new dining experience, so there will be no complaints. Come hungry, curious, and patient. Addis Ababa will award you. PS--there's a hookah lounge as well!

What a joke, leta start with the he fact that the person that just answered the phone was rude as* hail and she wasn't helpful at all. If you can't do your only job maybe you shouldn't use Postmates, why do postales have to deal with your crap when you were the one that did not have the items of your menu, even worse after substituting the items you for some reason don't have in stock you then proceed to tell me that is my fault. What in the actual f is wrong with your restaurant. Is not my job to call you first to then order from Postmates just because you can't run your business... Btw besides not getting what we order the food that we got looked inedible. The food looks like crap

Makes me feel like I'm visiting another country when I came inside, which I absolutely love. The lady who cooked our food was extremely accommodating and made us a special meat and veggie combo plate with all of the goodies (we can never pick just one or even two plates to share, we gotta have it all!) The combo was amazing, just what I wanted and needed! We also got the lentil sambosas which were perfectly soft and crispy at the same time and had the best freshest herb sauce to go along with it. Great spot!

my first time having ethiopian food and i loved it! the service was good and the music/ambiance was great.

The menu is small and they're just starting out. The owner is really nice and $10 for a veggie combo is a pretty great price!!!

Kare Ethiopians' location offers the traditional objects and décor of the culture and traditions - giving you a feel and apropos ambience. But the tables and chairs are reminiscent of the 60s with somewhat sticky plastic table covers, it has airy and comfortable seating, adequate service and courtesy and admirably modest prices - yet the food was good, but less than extraordinary! If you're not an Ethiopian food fanatic, Kare may not be the place to start your testing your taste buds. But if you're not an aficionádo or enthusiast already, there are a handful of other Ethiopian restos to better try. Right off the bat, when served my requested Pop Walia Lager, I had to ask for a glass, and the beer was barely cold! My wife ordered water, was served a bottle - no glass! We started with appetizers of reasonably tasty meat Sambussa. We decided that our main would be a sampler dish giving us ample opportunity to try an across-the-board spectrum of their offerings. It was a good choice. Within minutes of our appetizer arrived our sampler platter which included: selections of misr wat (red lentil), alecha wat (vegetable stew), fosolia (butter beans), gomen (damn good collard greens), and tikil gomen (excellent cabbage and potato stew) and key sir (a very good beet, potato, cabbage mix), all served with traditional injera and garnished with very little salad salad. I was hoping the selection would also have included some servings of kitfo (beef), atkilt (spice cabbage), and/or Yebeg Alicha (lamb stew), but I was not in luck. If this restaurant is near you, it will be a relatively decent choice for Ethiopian, but if not, for really excellent renditions there are at least two other competitors worth trying and more mouthwatering.

This recent visit was my third time having Ethiopian food, and I went in with an open mind. I remembered the last time I had Ethiopian food, I didn't really enjoy it. You have the option of choosing from their platters, or you can build your own. I created my own platter - I got the lamb dish (#5), the chicken dish (#3), and lentils (#9). These 3 dishes came on injera, which is a sour, fermented flatbread. It is basically a plate for the food, but you also use it to scoop up the meat/lentils to eat. My order also came with several more pieces of injera. The injera "plate" got soggy from the meat and lentils, so it was harder to use it to grab the fillings because it just kept falling apart. The chicken wasn't that great, so I wouldn't order that again, but the lamb dish and the lentils were sooo good. I had enough leftover for a second meal. I'm glad I gave Ethiopian food another chance! Next time, I would probably get the beef, lamb, and lentils.

We ended up getting platters off the menu instead, mostly ordering vegetarian. (But if you're hungry or want more food, the buffet is a good option.) The green beans and the collards are a solid combination because of the difference in texture and spice. Cabbage, fish and beef were also good. Everything came either on a bed of injeera (soft) or rice, or a combination. On weekdays they have lunch specials which are the best deals and very good and inevitably you'll have leftovers to enjoy later. Service has been better and more attentive in the past but it was busier than usual too. The actual decor and location is a bit dated but you probably wouldn't come here for the atmosphere. They also sell their coffee and other small things to go. I don't have ethiopian that often so this was a treat. Shared parking lot with other businesses.

Wow! For $17 I got the vegan combo plate and it came with 2 sides -- I opted for the mesir wat (spicy lentils) and gomen (collard greens). The mesir wat and gomen came beautifully wrapped in an injera, with a salad on the top and two very large rolled up injeras. This combo would be more than enough for two people to share. I ordered right as they opened and my order came fairly quickly (~40 mins), so I was really happy with that as well. The mesir wat was seasoned spectacularly! Just enough heat that pairs with the savory flavor. The gomen also was deliciously garlicky, all coming together so harmoniously with the sourness of the injera. I was worried that ordering it for delivery would affect the experience, but everything came nice and warm and it was so great to have this meal at home. I definitely will need to come in next time, with friends for sure, I could not finish this combo on my own.

However this is not the restaurant's fault that falls absolutely on DoorDash and their poor service. Having said that this is a family run restaurant. When you walk in may not be aesthetically pleasing to the eye on the outside but what you're about to experience inside is absolutely so much more. I ordered the mushroom wat which was very reasonably priced at nine dollars and an iced tea. The owner of the restaurant is very friendly very warm when I also taking my order promptly. The dining area itself is smaller, but very quaint and its ability to maintain its coziness. The decor of the restaurant is pretty modest in a culturally based atmosphere which improves the atmosphere of this wonderful experience. My food was very promptly made and arrived on the table quickly and experience was about to get all that much better. The mushroom wat was absolutely amazing and absolutely what I have been craving for the 20 years. I've been waiting for in my return cravings for Ethiopian food. The bread they used for dipping with absolutely perfect as it is always one of my favorites to indulge when eating this food. In the end this place left me sitting at the table absolutely stuffed, which is fantastic especially with the price what I paid for it all. The TV was on loud with a soccer game on. A man came out and sat us. we the meat sambusas. They were very good. The gentleman that served us was very nice. They sell water, you cannot get a glass.. only bottles. The prices of the food seemed reasonable. I got the Awaze Tibs(seasoned beef dish). this was very good. It came with the authentic Injera. (gluten free fermented bread) it has a spongy texture, a very sour dough like flavor. My daughter got the Alicia Wot (seasoned lamb dish). It was also very good. My problem lies with the service mostly. All the men that worked there, sat in the room with the TV, area watching the soccer game including our server. We sat there forever to get the door and then I had to go wake him for our bill. He didn't offer an itemized bill, just gave me the amount. I had to ask for an itemized bill. I'm not a fan of a restaurant that doesn't want to do their job. I will return and try more of the food, but i'm gonna have to figure out how to deal with the service.

To start I love that you're able to shop their small boutique store while you wait for your table to be ready. The store had some great artisan skincare crafted locally and many clothing, jewelry and woven items that benefit an African tribe. Now on to the food & drinks. The drink menu features some familiar cocktails with an African flare. I opted for their lemonade and added a shot of vodka, it was so delicious and refreshing. The food truly tastes as good as it looks! We shared the hummus, it wasn't too overpowering in onion flavor and the bread was perfectly dense and fluffy. For my main entree I was the peri peri chicken. Everything on the plate was a 5/5 for me, all super flavorful & cooked to perfection. To top it all off they were so gracious to provide us with birthday and anniversary gifts and even a special shot for each of us of their mama Juana.
